One of the ongoing controversies in the spa industry is whether or not to use gas heating for outdoor hot tubs versus the more common electric heating option.
First you need to decide what your spa pool will be. There are several factors that need to be taken into account before you make your final decision and that is what we are going to explore in this article.
5 MAIN FACTORS FOR THE USE OF HEAT EXCHANGERS IN SPA POOLS:
1. Spa water volume
2. Thermal insulation
3. The presence of a gas boiler
4. Climate
5. Year-round use
Let's take a look at each of these factors and see how they affect your choice.
WATER VOLUME IN THE SPA POOL
The more water you need to heat, the more your operating costs will be, it's just a fact. However, there is a line where the scale starts to tilt in favor of using gas heat. All else being equal, we have generally found this line to be around 700 liters or more for a spa or hot tub. Interestingly, such a large volume of water covers about 97% of the units you can buy ready to use, except for the swimming pool of course.
Most portable spa pools have between 600 and 1400 liters of water.
Using electric heating may take 7-8 hours to bring the spa to the desired temperature. The use of gas heat can shorten this time and may take 3 to 4 hours (depending on the size of the heat exchanger). However, the larger they are, the more they cost.
We have also found that the cost of using gas heat for spas compared to electric heat typically adds about $400 to your purchase cost, but this does not include the cost of running gas piping to a gas heater. So, for the sake of argument, let's just say that your extra cost was about $1,000. Now let's say that by using gas heated hot tubs, you saved an average of $30 a month. Divide $1,000 by $30, which means it will take 33 months before you fully recover the extra initial cost of using the heat exchanger.
That is, for small spa pools for 2-3 places, the additional cost of using gas heat is difficult to justify.
SPA POOL INSULATION FACTOR
The degree of spa or hot tub insulation plays a role in the running costs of this unit.
The better the bowl is insulated, the less it costs to operate. Poorly insulated spa pool, more expensive to run. When gas heat is used instead of electricity, the negative effects can be somewhat offset. But, if it has been heated by an electric heater and poorly insulated, the spa pool will unnecessarily increase your operating costs. So choose wisely when looking at how well the spa is insulated so you don't have to spend a lot on running it later.
AVAILABLE GAS
If you have gas as a heat source, that's great. But if the cost of running gas to a heat exchanger is out of control, then again, gas may not be the best choice for heating your spa or hot tub. You may need to install a new gas line from your existing system. This may require not only disconnecting the service line in order to connect to it, but also a trench for the gas pipeline to the heater itself. This distance can be short or long. The longer you need to run the line, the more expensive the installation becomes.
And you never know what you will come across when you dig.
CLIMATE AND ANNUAL USE OF THE SPA POOL
I like to link these two factors together because they have a direct influence on each other. For example, if you live in a warm climate and use the spa all year round, running costs won't be as impactful on your wallet as if you live in a cold climate and use the spa all year round. The obvious reason is that heating your spa in the middle of winter in the Moscow region (for example) will cost a lot more than in the middle of winter in the Krasnodar region.
Now all factors are combined. If you heat a large amount of water, have a poorly insulated spa, use electricity for heating, and run the unit in the winter, you will have huge running costs. If you use gas heating and a heat exchanger with the same factors, your costs will be incomparably lower.
As a result, we can say the following: it makes no sense to heat small spa pools for 2-3 people with gas, while large spa pools are cheaper to heat with a heat exchanger, and it is also worth considering what kind of thermal insulation you have and how the spa pool is used.
