Wrenches are tools for working with threaded connections. Back in the 19th century, the German weapons company Mauser was one of the first to start mass production of this tool. Since then, much has changed and keys of different types, shapes and sizes have appeared.
About what they are now, where and for what they are used, we tell in our article.
The most widely used is open end wrench . This is a classic instrument, the working head of which is bifurcated and resembles horns. There are usually two working heads, they are located at each end of the handle and have a different size. Such a key is convenient and budgetary, but can deform the fasteners. The reason is that it has a small area of contact with the part.
Interesting to know: open end wrenches are offset by 15° from the handle. This is done so that the tool can work in small spaces.
The working part of the ring wrench has the form of a ring with 6 or 12 faces inside. This design, unlike the open-ended one, prevents deformation of the fasteners. Working profiles of various sizes are located on both sides of the handle.
This type has one drawback: it is difficult for them to work in hard-to-reach places. However, there are modifications in which the working part is offset relative to the handle, like in open-ended ones. Most often, the offset angle does not exceed 15 °, but there are keys with a working profile offset of 90°.
improved box wrench . It has a built-in ratchet mechanism that allows you to unscrew the nut with a back and forth movement without scrolling.
Combined look has two working profiles on both ends of the handle, one of them is open-ended, the other one is a cap. Both profiles are the same size.
There are wrenches whose head looks like a slotted ring. They are called split . They have a C-shaped working part with an internal star-shaped profile. They are used where the ring wrench cannot be put on, and the open-end wrench cannot transmit sufficient torque.
More versatile tool adjustable wrench . It looks like a horn. The upper jaw of this tool is usually fixed, and the lower jaw can be moved using a special mechanism, thereby changing the size. This tool is popular for household use as it replaces a set of open end wrenches.
However, professionals do not like him very much. The adjustable wrench has a large working profile, so it is inconvenient when working in cramped conditions. Over time, its mechanism wears out, which contributes to the appearance of play and the inability to tightly wrap around the nut.
Also, an adjustable wrench cannot create a large torque, so it is problematic for them to tighten a nut or unscrew a tightly screwed part.
Life hack: do not use a ring ratchet when tightening or stripping nuts. When a lot of force is applied, the ratchet may fail and fail.
If the nut is deeply recessed into the hole, socket wrench is useful. It comes in the following types:
Socket wrenches are not able to create a large torque, so they have not gained such popularity as open-end and ring wrenches. They are used as auxiliary in the repair of cars.
Specialized socket type - spark plug . It is used when replacing spark plugs in cars. The simplest version of such a device is a tube with a candle holder inside. In the trunk of motorists, you can often find another type of socket wrench - balloon . This tool is necessary for unscrewing the nuts when changing wheels.
The pipe wrench is a type of adjustable wrench. The size of its working part is regulated by means of a lever and a clamping nut. The gripping force of the part depends on the strength of the worker. The pipe wrench comes with two jaw options: flat jaws are designed to work with ordinary nuts, rounded jaws help with gripping round joints.
When tightening fasteners, it is useful to know the force that must be applied for a good fastening. Too much force can cause the thread to break, and too little force can cause the part to break out during movement. To know exactly what force is being applied, torque wrenches are used. They have special indicators showing the amount of effort.
Allen wrench - L-shaped hex shank. It is used when it becomes necessary to tighten or unscrew fasteners with a slot of the appropriate shape. One of the main advantages of this device is maintainability. Its edges can be corrected with a file, or simply cut off the damaged part and use the key further.
There are nuts that do not have edges on the outside. These are twisted and unscrewed with the help of radius wrench . In appearance, it resembles a sickle with a special protrusion, with which the nut is captured.
Life hack: when buying a torque wrench, pay attention to the units of force: kilogram-force-meter (kgf × m), Newton meter (N × m), pound-feet, or pound-feet (Ib × ft ). It is more customary to work with kgf × m, but if there is no choice, conversion tables will help.
Working profile is the part of the key that comes into direct contact with the fastener. It can be hexagonal, hexagonal with a ball, twelve-sided, star-shaped, star-shaped with a hole or a ball.
Dowel and hexagon differ only in the number of edges. The advantage of a 12-point is that it needs 30° to turn, while a 6-point needs 60°. This nuance allows you to work with a 12-sided tool in more cramped conditions.
Hexagonal tools are available in two types: internal and external. Hexagons with an external working part look like an ordinary metal rod with 6 edges or a spherical end. The ball makes it possible to work with parts located at an angle.
Wrenches with TORX torx profile are less common. Due to their shape, they have a large area of contact with the fastener. This allows you to apply a lot of effort without fear for the integrity of the fasteners.
They are also available with internal and external working part. Keys with an external profile look like a L-shaped metal rod with an ending in the form of an asterisk. To work with fasteners in hard-to-reach places, some of them have a ball profile .
Sometimes there are fasteners with a pin in the center. To work with them , some TORX keys have a hole .
When choosing a tool, always pay attention to its size . It is written on the handle and denotes the size of the pharynx - the distance between the jaws of the working profile. This parameter varies from 2.5 to 85 mm.
If the key is double ended, the size number is next to each socket. The dimensions of the throat of one device are side by side in the size range. For example, 8/10 means that one head has a jaw spacing of 8mm, while the other has a slightly larger jaw spacing of 10mm.
In compound and ring spanners, instead of the throat size, is indicated, the seat size for the head. It is measured in inches.
Interesting to know: even keys are mechanics' tools, and odd keys are electricians'.
The cast handle is one piece with the working profiles and is typically found in open-end wrenches and box wrenches.
Some tools, most commonly socket tools, are designed to use crank handles are torque generating devices. In the simplest version, this is a straight or bent pin, which is threaded into special holes in the key body. The more complex ratchet has a ratchet mechanism. It allows you to screw and unscrew the fastener without removing the key from it.
Don't forget the shape of the handle. For ring spanners, it is most often S-, C-shaped, crescent-shaped or twisted . The latter form allows you to work in hard-to-reach places.
L-handle is most commonly found on socket wrenches. The long part of such a device works with fasteners that are recessed into deep holes. The short part is needed for unscrewing tight nuts: since the long part acts as a lever in this case, the torque is greater.
The most common socket wrench has a simple straight shape. Sometimes there are holes in it for installing a collar. Such a wrench is used where a lot of effort is not required, since it creates a small torque.
Socket wrenches sometimes have screwdriver handle . Just like straight ones, they cannot create a lot of torque. Balloon wrenches are usually made with cross handle . They have 3 or 4 working heads of different sizes. They are convenient to evenly tighten and unscrew the fasteners.
Telescopic handle allows you to increase the length of the tool. Due to this, the lever arm becomes longer, which in turn increases the torque transmitted to the nut.
Attachments with T-handle are often used on bikes and motorcycles.
Wrenches are used in many areas: auto repair, construction, plumbing, etc. To simplify the work, they are constantly being improved: structural changes are made, useful mechanisms are built in, for example, a reverse or a hinge.
Wrenches come in the following designs :
In addition to tools with one or two blades, there are models with 3 and even 4 blades . They are in the shape of a cross. The distance from the center of the cross to the head can be either the same or different. Most often, balloon wrenches are made with 3 or 4 working sides.
Some tools have a swivel that allows the parts to move relative to each other. This "trick" makes it more convenient to work in cramped conditions. Another useful "gadget" is reverse . When the reverse mode is on, the head rotates counterclockwise and unscrews the fasteners. When the reverse mode is off, the head rotates clockwise and twists the part.
For work in places where there is high voltage, special dielectric wrenches . Their handles are covered with a layer of insulation that protects a person from electric shock.
Use impact wrench to loosen tight and rusty nuts. This is a one-sided tool with a special thickening at the end. This feature allows you to withstand hammer and sledgehammer blows.
To choose a reliable wrench , you need:
