“A tire only loses air if it’s punctured.” This is a common misconception that we have all had or heard and yet the reality is quite different. Indeed, a tire can lose air even without a puncture, as for example in the case of a crack in the valve that is used to inflate your tires. A punctured valve is difficult to detect, and not taking care of it in time can have real consequences for your tire, but also (and above all!) for your safety. Blackcircles Canada, your online tire specialist, offers below a complete guide to the causes and consequences of a punctured valve, and how to repair a leaking valve stem.

Wear and tear is the main cause of a leaking valve.

A valve is a pin located on the outside of the tire, through which the tire can be inflated/deflated. It has a mechanism consisting of a spring-mounted valve that closes tightly with the air pressure inside the tire. Over time, the stem valve may become brittle and cracked, which may increase the risk of air leaking through it.

When the stem valve leaks, the affected tire is no longer able to retain air. Depending on the extent of the damage, the air will leak out slowly or more quickly. In both cases, the valve must be replaced.

If the air leakage is slow, you will be subject to the problems encountered by drivers driving with underinflated tires. Internal damage that can shorten the service life of the tire by up to a quarter, increased fuel consumption due to higher rolling resistance: the tire will damage faster, and your energy-efficiency will be significantly lower. The tire will also have poorer traction and the stability of your car will be reduced when cornering, not to mention the more pronounced deformation of the tire that increases its internal temperature, which can cause it to burst. Finally, an under-inflated tire increases the risk of hydroplaning. Tire pressure is thus very important!

Repairing a leaking tire valve is therefore imperative.

Here’s how to do it!

Step 1: Make sure it’s your valve stem that’s leaking.

First of all, make sure it is the tire valve stem that is leaking. To do so, there’s a very simple trick! Apply a mixture of water and dishwashing soap to the valve with the cap removed. If bubbles start to appear, your valve is leaking. If this is not the case, and there is a definite air leak, it will be located elsewhere on the tire.

Step 2: Gather the right tools before you start!

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary equipment to complete the replacement of the faulty valve stem.

For this, you will need the following:

  • An air compressor with the right nozzle for your tire,
  • A jack,
  • Jack stands,
  • A lug nut wrench for wheel mounting/removal,
  • Needle-nosed pliers,
  • A big hammer, preferably a sledgehammer,
  • A tire iron,
  • A valve stem removal tool,
  • A new valve stem.

You are now ready to start the process!

Step 3: Loosen the nuts on the wheel you are going to work on.

To do so, use the wrench mentioned in the previous step to loosen each of the lug nuts holding your wheel in place. Do this while the car is still on the ground.

However, for certain models of vehicles, it is possible that the wheel nuts have an anti-theft ring. If this is the case, you’ll have to use the appropriate special key to remove the locking nut(s).

Step 4: Raise your vehicle with the jack and then remove the wheel.

First and foremost, make sure the handbrake is applied so that your vehicle is completely immobilized. Then, use your jack to lift your car. Be sure to position it on the right part of the chassis so that the car is properly supported. This will prevent any damage to the car and any bodily injury. Once your car is lifted, secure it on jack stands. Unscrew the wheel bolts completely, then remove the wheel. Finally, place the wheel on the ground flat, with the outside of the wheel facing up.

Step 5: Remove the valve stem core with the removal tool and let the tire deflate.

If you have not already done so, remove the valve cap. Then remove the valve stem core using the valve stem removal tool to release the air from the wheel, which should normally deflate completely on its own.

Step 6: Separate the tire’s bead from the wheel.

For this step, use the sledgehammer in the following way: hit the tire sidewall with the sledgehammer in the same spot until you hear a crack or popping sound, and see the inside lip of the tire visibly break loose from the rim. This means that the tire has been successfully detached from the lip of the wheel.

Once the tire bead has been broken, continue hitting with the sledgehammer around the tire to detach the sidewall around the entire circumference of the wheel.

Step 7: Remove the tire from the rim.

Once the sidewall of the tire is separated from the outer edge of the rim around the entire circumference of the wheel, insert your tire iron between the edge of the rim and the inside lip of the tire, and then pry upward to pull the lip of the tire over the edge of the wheel. Once you have pulled the lip of the tire over the edge of the wheel, work the tire iron around the rim until the entire lip of the tire is off the rim.

Once the sidewall of the tire is completely above the wheel, grab it by its removed lip and pull it upward so that the opposite lip that was at the bottom of the wheel is now touching the top edge of the rim. Use your tire iron again by inserting it between the tire’s lip and the edge of the wheel and pry upwards to pull the lip over the edge of the rim. As before, work the tire iron around the edge of the wheel until the tire is removed from the wheel.

Step 8: Remove the defective valve stem and replace it with the new one.

Once the tire is separated from the rim, it is time to remove the valve stem. To do this, first pull out the valve stem free from the wheel using the needle-nose pliers. Once this has been done, install the replacement valve stem from the inside of the wheel. Once it is in position, use the needle-nose pliers again to pull it through into its right place on the wheel.

Step 9: Reinstall the tire on the wheel and inflate it.

Once the stem is in place, it is time to put the tire back on its rim. To do this, start by pressing the tire down over the rim until the bottom bead clears the edge of the rim. The aim here is to return the lower sidewall of the tire to its original position on the wheel.

Then press the upper sidewall of the tire down underneath the edge of the wheel. Then tuck your tire iron between the tire sidewall and the rim edge and use it to make the opposite movement to the one you used to pull the tire sidewall out of the rim. Once the bead clears the lip of the wheel, use the tire iron to work your way round the entire wheel until the tire is completely installed on the wheel. Then inflate it to the correct pressure using the air compressor.

Step 10: Make sure there are no other leaks, and mount your wheel back on!

Once the tire is inflated to the correct pressure, check for other leaks. If all is well, mount the wheel on your vehicle and bring it down by lowering the level of the jack stands until the repaired wheel touches the ground and you can safely remove them.

Ultimately, it is very important to make sure your tires are free of air leaks to maintain proper air pressure at all times. In the case of a slow air leak, the consequences can be dramatic. If the air leak is due to a faulty tire valve, you will definitely need to replace it. You can either follow the above procedure on how to repair a leaking tire valve or take it directly to a specialist. Fortunately for you, fixing a tire valve stem leak is both easy and cheap. You just need to purchase a replacement tire valve stem and a valve core tool. A pack containing both of these items is on Amazon for less than $5!

To replace the leaking tire valve stem, do the following:

  • Wear goggles (in case dirt or the tire valve stem go flying into your face).
  • Use the core valve tool to pull out the old stem and replace it with the new one.
  • Use the core valve tool to tighten the stem until it’s snug (it’s easy to strip the threading, so don’t over tighten the new stem).
  • Make sure you put the stem’s cover back on to prevent dirt from getting in!

Note: If you notice corrosion on the old stem, be sure to clean the interior threads of the tire stem on the tire.

While this is an easy and cheap fix, there are some car fixes you may need assistance with, so it’s always a good idea to invest in a solid car insurance policy.

The faucet is leaking in the kitchen, how to fix and eliminate the leak

Perhaps everyone who uses plumbing with a faucet has at least once come across the question of why the faucet is flowing? In the vast majority of cases, leakage occurs at the joints of the mixer parts. Below we will dwell on the options for solving this problem and the causes of the leak.

The joint between the faucet and the body is leaking

0009, the rubber seal is thinned, connecting the faucet spout to the body.

Leakage can be eliminated by replacing the worn rubber band with a new one . To do this, you need:

    1. Unscrew the fastening and mounting nuts.
    2. Remove the worn seal (at the same time you can make sure that the cause is wear).
    3. Replace the old seal with a new one.
    4. Reassemble the valve in reverse order.

    Faucet mixer leak

    Leaking valve

If water drips from one or two wash valves, then, with a high probability, the leak can be removed by replacing the faucet box . This is a block part located directly under the valve handwheel. Crane boxes of two-valve mixers are of two types: ceramic and worm.

How to disassemble the faucet mixer and remove the faucet box is shown in the photo below.

    Ceramic bushing repair

In order not to drip from the ceramic faucet box, , a complete replacement of element is needed. To remove the old axle box, you need to:

    1. remove the valve plug and unscrew the screw;
    2. after - remove the valve and unscrew the crane box;
    3. then you need to buy exactly the same item;
    4. screw it in the same place
    5. and assemble the crane back.

Of course, the water must first be turned off.

Repair of a worm-drive crane box

Repair of a crane with a worm-drive crane box is easier: not the entire element needs to be changed, but only the seal under it .

The procedure is the same as for the ceramic bushing, the only difference is that you need to replace the gasket under the bushing with a new one and screw it back.

    Leak under the nut

    0010 .

    1. It is necessary to unscrew the bushing in the same way and remove the rod from it.
    2. There should be an elastic band in the groove, which is the gland.
    3. To repair a kitchen faucet, you need to install a new seal and reassemble the faucet.

The repair of a two-valve mixer is described above. How to fix a leak in a single-lever model is described in the next subsection.

    Single lever faucet leaking

0009 change cartridge . As in the case of crane boxes, the cartridge must be bought new , completely similar to the old one.

To repair such a faucet, follow this procedure:

    1. Shut off the water supply.
    2. Remove the plug on the tap (you can pry it off with something sharp).
    3. Remove the screw located under this plug.
    4. Remove the tap handle and unscrew the trim.
    5. Pull out the cartridge by removing the fixing nut.
    6. Replace cartridge.
    7. Reassemble mixer in reverse order.

Detailed instructions for replacing the cartridge in the mixer with your own hands at the link.

The joint with the water pipe is leaking

In this case, the problem is solved by replacing the gaskets.

    Required:

    1. unscrew the fastening nut;
    2. remove mixer;
    3. replace gaskets;
    4. then - put everything back together.

how to fix and fix a leak, what to do, instruction

    the faucet no longer dripped.

    Types of leaks

The faucet leaks due to non-compliance with the operating rules, as well as due to normal wear of parts. Drip can:

    • from under the bath faucet in the area where the spout attaches to the body,
    • from valves and handle,
    • from watering can and hose,
    • from aerator,
    • at the junction with the water pipe.

Basically, the types of leaks are directly related to the joints of the parts, because it is there that the gaskets and nuts are located, which are most subject to wear. The cause of a leaky bathroom faucet is directly related to the location of the leak.

What to do if the faucet in the bathroom is leaking

When a user states that a faucet in the bathroom is leaking, they are usually referring to the joint between the spout and the body on models with a long swivel neck. This place is indeed heavily stressed, as all-purpose bath faucets have spouts that often turn during use. In itself, the presence of a long spout is an additional load on the junction. And rotational properties increase the wear of gaskets and nuts at the attachment point.

The faucet in the bathroom is dripping because the gasket that connects the spout to the body has worn out . In this case, it is recommended to replace the rubber seal.

Instructions for replacing the gasket between the body and the gooseneck to eliminate leakage:

    1. Unscrew the fixing nut with an adjustable wrench,
    2. unscrew the mounting nut,
    3. remove the old rubber seal (note its condition),
    4. put on a new rubber seal,
    5. screw mounting nut,
    6. screw back the front fixing nut.

Such simple manipulations allow you to easily and effectively fix a leaking faucet in the bathroom yourself using a minimum set of tools and parts.

Water flows from the faucet and shower at the same time

A common problem with bath faucets is that water flows from the faucet and shower at the same time. This means that the bath-shower switch mechanism is broken, which can be represented by a button, diverter, lever. Troubleshooting depends on the type of switch.

    Pushbutton switch

If the pushbutton switch is broken, it often causes the mixer to work incorrectly, and water can come from everywhere at once. This is very inconvenient, since an unexpected flow of water from a watering can located on a wall holder, when the “spout” mode is on, can take you by surprise. This is not to mention the weaker flow power if the water flows in two directions at once.

You think it's the button popping up, but pushing harder or releasing it doesn't always solve the problem.

It's all about the pushbutton switch gasket . It can undergo some modifications, deform, erase or thicken. Usually the problem of simultaneous leakage from the tap and the shower in the presence of a button is solved by replacing the gasket in the mechanism.

Instructions for replacing the gasket in the switch button:

    1. unscrew the button with an adjustable wrench and remove it,
    2. below is a stem with several seals that must be removed and replaced with new ones,
    3. screw the button back.

Check the correct operation of the switch in the push-button mixer. If the water flows in one direction, then you can congratulate yourself, you managed to fix the button yourself and eliminate the leak.

Detailed instructions for repairing the push button shower switch in the faucet at the link.

    Spool switch

Old valve style bathrooms often have a spool switch. It is also called pendulum or flag.

Instructions on how to repair the spool mechanism to troubleshoot operation:

    1. get rid of the plug on the spool,
    2. remove screw,
    3. unscrew the handle-lever,
    4. using the key, remove the internal switch,
    5. replace spool,
    6. put the switch back,
    7. screw lever,
    8. reinstall the screw and plug.

After performing manipulations to replace the spool, check the operation of the switch in the spool mixer. Water must be supplied separately to the shower and separately to the spout, without flows from both openings.

The connection between the watering can and the hose is leaking

If the connection between the watering can and the hose has begun to leak, then the problem may also be in the gasket .

    Instructions for fixing the leak:

    1. disconnect the watering can with the hose from the body by unscrewing the docking nut,
    2. unscrew the nut connecting the hose to the watering can,
    3. Locate the gasket on the pressure hose and replace with a new one,
    4. reconnect the hose to the watering can,
    5. , connect the structure to the mixer body by screwing the nut into place.

Water is flowing from the valve

If water is flowing from the valve, it is a two-valve bathroom faucet. This is a product of gradual flow adjustment by alternately rotating the cold and hot water handwheels. The complete set of valve models includes two flywheels and two crane boxes, respectively.

Crane box is the internal element that is directly responsible for controlling the flow of water at the appropriate temperature. If water drips at the flywheel attachment point and a leak is detected, then the point is precisely in the failure of the crane box.

    Ceramic bushing replacement

Half-turn bushings contain tightly fitting ceramic plates. If the plate is damaged , then the valve starts to leak in the flywheel area and drip. If the situation is running, water can flow in a jet.

In this case, it is necessary to replace the ceramic bushing according to the instructions:

    1. remove the decorative cap from the flywheel,
    2. remove the screw carefully without damaging the element,
    3. remove valve,
    4. unscrew the half-turn crane box,
    5. remove the crane box and install a new one instead of the old one (you must first buy
    6. identical item according to stem length, type, splines or square, better the same production as the old one, or with prior consultation in the store),
    7. put back the valve,
    8. screw screw,
    9. install the plug.

    Worm Drive Crane Replacement

Worm Drive Crane is a simpler and cheaper option. It can be found in older models of mixers. The principle of operation is based on the worm gear of the retractable stem. Such an axle box is called a valve or wing-type, it has a rubber gasket at the end. If the seal is worn , the valve may leak even when the valves are closed.

The advantage of worm-drive crane-boxes over ceramic ones is the possibility of their repair on their own without replacing the entire element.

In this case, you can repair and eliminate the leakage of the mixer according to the instructions:

    1. remove the plug on the valve,
    2. unscrew the screw,
    3. remove the flywheel,
    4. Unscrew and remove the wing nut,
    5. Remove the rubber seal from the bottom and replace with a new one,
    6. reinstall element and screw on,
    7. put on the flywheel,
    8. tighten screw,
    9. install the plug.

    Replacing gland

If water is leaking from the clamping nut to the valve, the problem may be in the gland .

You can solve the problem of leakage by following the instructions:

  • find a thin rubber band in the groove of the rod - this is the stuffing box (sometimes a double rubber band),
  • replace the oil seal.
  • screw the rod back.
  • In this way, you can independently eliminate leakage in the valve area in a two-valve model of a bath mixer with any type of faucet box.

    Single lever bath faucet leaking

If the single lever bath faucet under the control unit is leaking, then the problem is most often in the faulty cartridge. In this case, the element cannot be repaired, it is possible to replace the cartridge with a new one.

When buying a cartridge, pay attention to its diameter and manufacturer. It is better to have an old cartridge with you when buying, so that the store can pick up an identical one. An item that is not suitable in terms of parameters will become a waste of money.

A new cartridge is installed according to the instructions:

    1. remove the cap on the lever (usually it is a water flow indicator - a red-blue button), in order to remove it, you need to pry it off with a knife or a flat screwdriver,
    2. unscrew the screw under the plug,
    3. remove handle,
    4. unscrew trim,
    5. Unscrew the nut that secures the cartridge,
    6. remove cartridge,
    7. install new,
    8. fix with nut,
    9. install trim,
    10. put back the lever,
    11. screw screw,
    12. install the plug.

Detailed instructions for replacing the cartridge in the faucet with your own hands are presented at the link.

    Water pipe joint leak

Water pipe joint leaks are less common than others, but still possible.

    Leak in the nozzle area

The wall-mounted bath faucet is mounted in two holes from which the nozzles exit. If a leak occurs in the area where the mixer is connected to the nozzles, then the problem most often lies in the displacement of the gasket .

It is solved by replacing the gaskets according to the instructions:

    1. unscrew the fastening nuts,
    2. remove mixer,
    3. replace gaskets,
    4. install mixer,
    5. screw the nuts back.

The water pressure has dropped and the flow is weak

If the water pressure has dropped and the flow is weak, the cause may be clogged aerator .

The aerator is a small piece at the tip of the gander. Its main function is to disperse water, reducing consumption. Additionally, the aerator saturates the water with oxygen.

If the water does not flow properly due to the aerator, then proceed as follows:

    1. unscrew the aerator,
    2. clean the holes with a needle,
    3. flush contamination,
    4. screw the aerator back.
