How to measure atv wheel size

How To Measure UTV & ATV Wheels (Offsets, Size, And Bolt Pattern)

If you have ever seen a set of ATV or UTV rims and tried to find the right size to fit your vehicle or tried to figure out what tires will fit on the wheels then you may have been very confused. Looking for rim size to accommodate your vehicle can be tough when you look at the size and it says something like (10×5 4+1 4/156) which is what my Polaris Outlaw 525S has. It is not very intuitive as to what these random numbers mean but I will let you know exactly how to interpret these numbers and exactly what they do.

There are three sections to wheel size. Each is separated by a comma. The sets of numbers gives a different measurement of the wheel. From left to right the numbers correspond to rim size (diameter and width), wheel offset, and bolt pattern.

UTV and ATV manufacturers build their vehicles to many different specifications so it can be tough to find all the info you need. I have a chart down below that lists several of the models and their wheel and tire sizes from the factory. Before that, let’s go over exactly what each wheel measurement means.

If you want to go check out Amazon’s selection of wheels then you can go ahead and check this table below. They have a very nice selection of wheels to choose from.

To measure the diameter of a wheel you need to measure the width of the tire bead portion of the wheel Do not measure the outer portion of the rim or this will give you an inaccurate measurement. The numbers from my example (10×5 4+1 4/156) the 10×5 is the diameter (10inches) and width (5 inches) just like the image below.

Measuring wheel offset is a more involved process than diameter and width. The offset is the distance from the center line of the wheel to the hub mounting surface. The center line of the wheel is also called the center weld.

In the diagram above you see the offset is 3+2. The backside of the wheel, where the 3 inch measurement is located, is called the bell. It is the outside measurement from the center weld to the tire bead.

The 2 inch portion is called the nose and when you add the 3+2 you get your overall width at 5 inches.

When the mounting surface is in the true center of the wheel, there is zero offset. So if you had an even measurement on either side of the center weld it would be considered zero offset

A positive offset is when the bell of the wheel is wider than the nose. The image above is what would be considered a positive offset of 3 inches on the bell and 2 inches on the nose.

The nose of the wheel is wider in a negative offset. Imagine if the measurements were reversed in the image above and we had a 2 inch bell and 3 inch nose.

Measure from the center weld to the center of the tire bead area on both sides of the wheel. The outer measurement on the nose will be the one with the valve stem. The measurement from the center weld to the rear of the rim will be the bell section. You can then determine what offset your rims have.

The only way to change your lug pattern from what was installed from the factory is to change the hubs to the bolt pattern of your choice. Your ATV will have one of three patterns: 3-lug, 4-lug or a 5-lug and they do come in different sizes. To find out which size you need, you will have to measure the pattern. With the example I used in the first paragraph, 4/156, “4” is the number of bolt holes and “156” is the distance measured in mm.

Here is a chart to help you quickly reference your vehicles factory wheel and tire sizes.

How to Read an ATV Wheel Sizes

Looking up a good set of wheels for recently purchased brand new ATV or used vehicle may seem like an impossible task, especially when wheels are one of the most important parts on your ATV. You need to be confident that you have the right wheels in the correct size, perfectly fitted to your vehicle to be fully immersed in the ATV world. Read this article to learn about ATV wheel sizing, wheel offset, and bolt pattern. So what do all those numbers mean?

While ATV wheels may be constructed of several materials (steel, aluminum), they all are commonly described by three sets of numbers. Let's take this one wheel example - 12x7, 4+3, 4/156.

ATV Wheel Size

The first set of numbers in our example, "12x7" is wheel diameter and width of the wheel. Wheel diameter (12 inches) is the widest point across the center from bead seat to bead seat. The width of the wheel (7 inches) is the distance from the outside of the wheel to the inside or vice versa.

ATV Wheel Offset

First of all, the offset is the distance from the centerline of the wheel to the hub mounting surface. The example wheel has a 4+3 offset. The first number "4" (it means 4 inches) is the distance from the centerline to the inside bead seat. The "3" (3 inches) is the distance from the centerline of the wheel to the outside bead seat (the side with the valve stem hole). The sum of these two distances is 7 inches - the width of our example wheel.

There are three different types of offsets: zero offset, negative and positive. A positive offset is when the inside section (bell) is wider than the outside section (nose) of the wheel. The example wheel has a positive 4+3 offset. If the nose section of the wheel is the widest (3+4 as en example), a wheel has a negative offset. A zero offset is when the hub mounting surface is in the true center of the wheel (4+4 would be a zero offset ATV wheel).

ATV Wheel Bolt Pattern

Your ATV already has hubs with one style of the bolt pattern. It may be a 3-lug, 4-lug, or a 5-lug pattern. Besides, each bolt pattern comes in different sizes. So, it is very important to know the correct measurements of the bolt pattern which your ATV has before buying a set of new wheels. Let's take a look at our example size. The last section contains "4/156". It also can be written as "4 on 156mm". The number "4" stands for the number of bolt holes. In this case, we have a 4-lug bolt pattern. The "156" is a distance in millimeters from the center of one bolt hole across the center of the wheel to opposite bolt. The spacing of bolt holes also can be described as the diameter of a virtual circle passing through the center of all bolt holes.

Correctly determine the size of ATV tires

05/17/2018

The numbers written on the side of the rubber tire can tell the owner of the ATV everything that interests him. And if you are for some If you don't know what these mysterious numbers mean, then you can be mistaken when choosing the next set of tires. But tires directly determine whether it will go technique further or not. So, in this article you will close all the questions on about the decoding of size ATV tire .

rubber tires

All tires have their own basic parameters - this is the width, height and diameter. The value of these parameters is mainly measured in inches. Exists two units:

1) If you have ATV, then this is for you. English version is the most common number system that is used when determination of tire dimensions on ATVs. All measurements here are in inches. (1 inch equals 2.54 cm). For example, the size indicated in English classification looks like this - 25x8x12 . Let's take a closer look at the meaning of each digit:

- The first digit 25 shows the height of the tire in inches;

- The second digit 8 indicates the width of the tire in inches;

- The last, third digit 12 indicates the diameter of the wheel disk, it is also measured in inches. Disc diameter on each ATV can be different. Therefore, be careful before you buy tires for ATV, see what regular disks are installed on your vehicle.

Important!

And a very important point worth noting. Often our customers ask themselves: “If I have a tire size of 20x10x10, can I put instead of them 20x11x10? The answer is yes. First, you can put rubber on regular wheels with a size exceeding 1 inch in height and width. Secondly, if you want tires even wider, then for this you will need to buy other disks. But again, there are limitations. On discs of other diameters, you can install rubber, the largest is only 2 inches in height and width.

These two rules must be strictly observed, otherwise, if you try to put tires of an unacceptably large size, this may adversely affect on a quad bike. After all, the rubber will be larger and, accordingly, heavier, which does not fit the technical parameters of the ATV. In production ATVs take into account all the characteristics, so manufacturers of ATV equipment I don't recommend using larger tires at all. But if you do decided to increase the size of tires, call our toll-free number, we we will help.

2) Also there is another version - metric . Here the dimensions are indicated in percentage and millimeters. For example, size specified according to the metric classification - 205/80 Rx12 . Such designations are usually used on automobile tires. Let's see what's what:

- The first digit of 205 shows the total tire width in millimeters. Converting this value to inches, we will just get the number 8 (in the English version is 8 inches wide).

- The second digit 80 indicates the ratio of the height of the tire to its width, measured as a percentage. After doing some mathematical manipulations, we get the number 25 (in the English version, the height is equal to 25 inches).

- The number 12, as in the English version, shows the size disk in inches.

- Well, the letter R means that our tire is radial.

To summarize:

The most important thing to remember from the article is that it is not recommended to install tires of huge sizes that do not correspond to the parameters your ATV . If you want to change the tires on your vehicle, give us a call. we will help.

ATV tires: type and features

An important factor influencing the performance of an ATV is its tire type. Some riders change tires as soon as they buy them to meet all riding requirements. Other riders are faced with the need to buy new tires when the old one has worn out. But before buying, you need to figure out what qualities tires for an ATV should have.

It's worth starting with the choice of wheel size. You can change the standard diameter by selecting the wheels in accordance with the driving style and features of the vehicle operation. At the same time, the technical characteristics of motor vehicles are also taken into account. The larger the diameter, the larger the contact patch of the tread with the road, the higher the off-road patency. The small size of the wheels allows you to develop high speed. At the same time, the cross-country ability of the ATV on the road is reduced.
When choosing a diameter, pay attention to the engine size. If it is not more than 50 cm³, you should not change the size of the wheels. Such ATVs lose their sensitivity and controllability after changing the standard size. There is a certain pattern to keep in mind when changing the diameter of the wheels: tires that are too large reduce the life of the engine, transmission and suspension, and also reduce torque.

ATV tires and variations

ATV tires can be of two types:
• Diagonal.
• Radial.
It is worth noting that both types of tread pattern are designed for off-road driving. Diagonal varieties are in great demand, as they maintain high course stability when driving through mud or swamps, and make it easy to overcome obstacles on the road.
Radial tires give you more speed on hard surfaces. Most often, this type of tread pattern is found on racing ATV tires.

Tread pattern

ATV tires feature a unique tread pattern. It directly depends on how the all-terrain vehicle will move over rough terrain. The drawing has characteristic features that determine the features of the operation of the vehicle. The following varieties are distinguished:
• For dirt. The pattern is deep, made in the form of a herringbone, which avoids slipping on a viscous or wet surface. The pattern on the front and rear tires is different. This is necessary in order to avoid slipping in the mud. The rear tires have a pattern in the form of deep grooves and side hooks. Mud tires are used primarily by farmers and the most extreme riders.
• For sand. The tread has special blades that perfectly remove loose soil from the contact spot area. This provides excellent tire grip on the road. Such a pattern looks like long blocks, which, like buckets, scoop up soft soil. Sand tires cannot be used for other surfaces, so their area of use is very limited.
• Sports. The flat surface of the tires has small lugs to keep the course stable on hard ground. Tires are made of soft rubber, which allows you to keep the course well. Flexibility provides a bi-directional pattern. To overcome obstacles well, sports tires have a strong shoulder area.
• Universal. The tread has a fine pattern that shows good grip on most types of road surface.
• For grass. When driving on grass, the tires evenly distribute the load in the contact patch. This ensures high stability and wear resistance. The protector has no lugs, which allows you to move around the lawns without causing them much damage.
• Winter. They are distinguished by the presence of a special pattern that complements the spikes or chains.

Required pressure

Tire pressure matters for flotation. It should not be too high so that the tires do not bounce strongly from bumps. This improves cross-country ability, which is especially important when driving over rough terrain. If you want to travel on a normal road, the tire pressure of the ATV should be increased.
Off-road tires are inflated to 0.35-0.83 bar. More pressure is required for riding on a hard track.

Rubber marking

ATV markings contain many letters and numbers. To understand what information they provide to the buyer, it is required to consider the decoding of the marking.
So, if the rubber is used for off-road driving, the manufacturer puts the letters NHS on it. These tires are not designed to travel at high speed, so they can not be used on a normal road.
Tire parameters are usually measured in two different systems:
• Metric.
• English.
The metric system turned out to be more convenient for our customers. Although marking according to the English method also takes place. According to it, tire parameters can be written as follows: 25x8-12
The first number after the letters indicates the height of the tire in inches, and the second indicates the width of the tire. The last two letters are the designation for the radius of the disc. It is worth noting that ATV tires with a radius of 12 inches are mainly on sale.
The metric system looks like this: 205/80R12.
In this case, the tire size is indicated in millimeters, where the first number 205 is the width of the tire. The second number is the ratio of the profile height to the tire width.
