Learn how to change a flat tire using the Mitsubishi Montero Sport spare tire kit. Make sure you are in a safe area that is level and free of traffic before attempting to fix a flat tire. This video shows you where the spare tire, jack and jack kit is located in your Montero Sport how to assemble the components of the spare tile tool kit, how to replace the flat tire with your spare tire and safety precautions to take when using your jack. Most Mitsubishi jack kits include the jack, a jack handle and a lug nut wrench. The video also shows how to put the 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport back in its original location.
Which way does the spare tire go on? The Montero Sport spare tire should always be mounted with the valve stem (the thing you put air into) pointing out. If you cannot see the valve stem, the spare tire on Montero Sport is mounted backwards. In addition, if your Montero Sport has a donut spare (a small spare tire), then you should mount it on one of the rear wheels when you are in a safe area to do so. What is the maximimum speed for a spare tire? If your Montero Sport has a donut spare, the maximum speed is likely 50 miles per hour. Some trucks have full-size spare tires, which would have the same speed limits as the other tires. How many miles can be driven on a spare tire? If it is a donut spare tire, you should not drive more than 50 miles on a donut spare tire.
While following the instructions provided in your Montero Sport's owners manual and in this video will help minimize the risk of injury. The best way to avoid injury is to never get under your vehicle while it is jacked up. Remember also, that even if your car is jacked up properly, another car could hit it and knock it over; therefore, be sure to give careful consideration to your environment before raising your car.

A customer surprised by a flat tire may want a mechanic to come out and replace the damaged tire with the spare tire.
Spare tires in many vehicles are intended only to be used as a temporary solution until a new tire (or set of tires) can be purchased.
Spare tires are a great solution when you find yourself with a flat tire, so you should always keep a spare tire in your vehicle. If you don’t feel comfortable putting the spare tire on, you should call a mechanic to do it for you.
Cars need four tires to operate. Most vehicles come equipped with a spare tire in the trunk, just in case one of your regular tires blows or goes flat. In the event that a tire loses its pressure, you can use the spare tire as an interim tire until you get it replaced. Spare tires may be compact or donut spare tires which are smaller than regular tires, and for safety concerns shouldn’t be driven for long periods of time, but they allow you to get your car mobile again after a flat tire. A full-size spare can also be installed which can be used indefinitely until you can have your flat tire repaired or replaced, as long as the spare tire has tread remaining. Spare tires are not meant for use above 55 mph, so you should not drive your vehicle at highway speeds while it’s equipped with a spare tire, either compact or full-size.
If your vehicle is equipped with wheel locks, a mechanic will need the wheel lock key to remove the flat tire and install your spare tire. Keep your wheel lock key readily accessible in your vehicle in the event of a flat tire.

6. CHANGING A WHEEL
Before changing a wheel, the vehicle must be stopped in a safe place on a level and level surface.
1. Stop the vehicle on a level, firm, level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake, engage first gear (manual transmission) or move the automatic transmission selector lever to P (Park).
3. Turn on the hazard warning lights and turn the ignition key to the LOCK position.
4. Place an emergency stop sign, flashing signal light, etc. at a distance prescribed by the Road Traffic Regulations, and ask passengers to get out of the car.
5. To prevent the vehicle from moving unintentionally when the vehicle is jacked up, place a brake shoe or block (A) under the wheel diagonally from the wheel being changed (B).
CAUTION
When jacking up the vehicle, be sure to place a brake shoe under the wheel on the ground. If the jacked up vehicle moves, the jack may slip out, resulting in an accident. Note
- The brake shoe pictured is not included with the vehicle. However, it is recommended that the brake shoe be kept in the vehicle and used when needed.
- If a brake shoe is missing, use a stone or other object large enough to hold the wheel in place.
6. Prepare the spare wheel, jack and jack handle.
7. Position the jack under one of the jacking points on the vehicle shown in the illustration. Install the jack at the point closest to the wheel being changed.
D. Front jacking point.
E. Rear jacking point.
CAUTION
- The jack must only be installed at the points indicated in the figure. If the jack is installed in the wrong place, it may dent the vehicle body or fall, resulting in injury.
- Do not place the jack on an uneven or soft surface. On an unreliable surface, the jack may slip and cause injury. Only place the jack on a flat, firm surface. Before installing the jack, make sure that there is no sand or small gravel under its base. Note
When raising the rear of the vehicle, turn the head of the jack until the groove (E) is aligned with the installation point.
1. Using the jack handle, tighten the outlet valve (A) clockwise until snug.
2. Insert the handle into the jack bracket so that the tongue (C) of the bracket fits into the slot (B) at the end of the handle.
3. Rock the jack handle up and down until the jack head touches the stop on the vehicle body. Make sure that the jack is in contact with the car body. Raise the vehicle by swinging the jack handle up and down.
Note
The jack stem consists of two sections.
1. Install the jack handle so that the valve (L) of the jack fits into the tab (K) on the end of the handle.
2. Rotate the jack handle and slowly turn the outlet valve counterclockwise to lower the stem and remove the jack.
3. Push in the stem until it stops and tighten the outlet valve by turning it clockwise.
4. Put the jack, jack handle and tool kit back in place.
WARNING
- Open the outlet valve slowly. If the valve is opened quickly, the vehicle will drop abruptly and the jack may come out from under the vehicle and cause serious injury.
- If the outlet valve is loosened too far (2 turns or more) by turning it counterclockwise, oil will leak out of the jack and it will become unusable.
- When lowering the car, close the exhaust valve slowly; otherwise the valve may be damaged. Note
- Sometimes after lowering the car it can be difficult to release the head of the jack - it gets stuck in the parts of the car body. In this case, rock the car to lower the jack rod.
- If the jack is difficult to remove by hand, insert the jack handle (M) into the bracket (N). Then remove the jack with the handle.
CAUTION
- Stop lifting the vehicle as soon as the wheel is off the ground. Raising the vehicle higher is dangerous.
- It is forbidden to be under a car raised on a jack.
- It is forbidden to strike a raised car and leave it on a jack for a long time: this is extremely dangerous.
- Only use the jack supplied with the vehicle.
- The jack may only be used to change a wheel.
- The vehicle being jacked up must not carry passengers.
- Do not start or leave the engine running while the vehicle is jacked up.
- It is forbidden to rotate the raised wheel. Wheels on the ground may spin, causing the vehicle to fall off the jack.
The spare wheel is stored under the luggage compartment floor.
A. Spare wheel.
CAUTION
Regularly check the pressure in the spare tire so that the wheel is ready for installation if necessary. Driving with insufficient tire pressure can cause an accident. If it is necessary to drive with insufficient tire pressure, slow down and correct the tire pressure as soon as possible. By maintaining the maximum prescribed air pressure in the spare wheel, the wheel will always be ready for use in all conditions (city driving, high speed driving, carrying loads of various sizes, etc.).
CAUTION
Wear gloves before removing the spare wheel. Removing the spare wheel with bare hands can injure your fingers.
1. Turn the cover (A) to the "RELEASE" position and remove it.
2. Use the wheel wrench to turn the bottom cover and remove it.
3. Using a wheel wrench, turn the mounting bolt (C) counterclockwise until the wheel is fully on the ground so that the chain is loose.
4. Remove the retaining plate (D) from the spare wheel.
1. Install the mounting plate (A) in the hole in the spare wheel.
2. Turn the mounting bolt (B) clockwise with the wheel wrench to tension the chain.
Note
When the wheel starts to lift off the ground, make sure the mounting plate is seated securely in the wheel hole.
3. After the spare wheel is securely tightened, check that it does not wobble (tightening torque should be approx. 22 Nm).
CAUTION
The spare wheel must be securely fastened. After replacing a flat tire, install it in place of the spare tire with the outer side up and secure it securely with the wheel wrench. Note
Do not overtighten the bolt, as this will damage the wheel mount and prevent the chain from being tensioned.
4. Install the bottom cover (C) and turn it clockwise with the wheel wrench.
5. Replace the cover (D) and turn it to the "LOCK" position.
Before changing a wheel, the vehicle must be stopped in a safe place on level ground. Monolith Publishing House
5. To prevent unintentional movement of the vehicle when jacked up, place a brake shoe or block (A) under the wheel diagonally from the wheel to be replaced (B).
CAUTION
When jacking up the vehicle, be sure to place a brake shoe under the wheel on the ground. If the jacked up vehicle moves, the jack may slip out, resulting in an accident.
6. Have the spare wheel, jack, jack handle and wheel wrench ready.
Note
Place the spare wheel under the vehicle body next to the damaged wheel. This will provide additional safety if the car comes off the jack.
7. Use a wheel wrench to loosen the wheel nuts. The nuts must not be completely loosened.
8. Using the information in the Jacking the Vehicle section, find the jacking point closest to the problem wheel. Jack up and raise the vehicle until the tire is slightly off the ground.
9. Remove the wheel nuts with a wrench, then remove the wheel.
WARNING
When replacing a wheel, be careful not to scratch the surface of the rim.
10. Clean the surface of the wheel hub (G), hub studs (H) and hole in the rim (I) from dirt and install the spare wheel.
CAUTION
The spare wheel must be installed with the valve (J) outward. If the valve is not visible, the wheel is not installed correctly. Operating the vehicle with an incorrectly installed spare wheel can result in vehicle damage and an accident.
11. Tighten the wheel nuts by hand (turning them clockwise). Tighten the nuts (flange nuts) until the flanges of the nuts touch the surface of the rim and the wheel is attracted to the hub.
CAUTION
Do not apply grease to the wheel studs or wheel nuts, as the greased parts will be overtightened. Note
If the vehicle is fitted with aluminum alloy rims, a spare wheel with a steel rim can be used temporarily by securing it with flange nuts, but an alloy rim with a suitable tire should be fitted as soon as possible.
When replacing all four wheel rims with steel rims, use flare nuts.
12. Slowly lower the vehicle to the ground, then tighten the nuts crosswise in two or three steps until all nuts are securely tightened.
Note
Tightening torques:
Steel rim: 137-157 Nm.
Alloy wheel: 118-137 Nm.
Achieved by applying the following amount of force to the end of the wheel wrench supplied with the vehicle:
Steel rim: 510-580 N.
Alloy rim: 440-500 N. WARNING strongly.
13. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack. Then put the jack, jack handle, wheel wrench and brake shoes in place, secure the flat tire in place of the spare. A defective tire should be repaired as soon as possible.
14. Check tire pressure. The nominal pressure is indicated on the label on the center column (see illustration).
CAUTION
- Periodically check and maintain the air pressure in the spare tire.
- After driving approximately 1000 km (620 miles) after changing a wheel, tighten the wheel nuts to make sure they are not loose.
- If the steering wheel vibrates after changing a wheel, we recommend having the wheel balance checked by an authorized MITSUBISHI MOTORS service center.
- It is forbidden to install tires of different types and use tires whose size does not correspond to that specified in the technical specifications of the car. This leads to increased wear and poor handling.

on Easy Select'e 4L this is the reduced one. Or am I wrong too?If there is SS on the transfer case, there will be such modes:
2H
4H
4HLc
4LLcIf Easy Select is installed:
2H
4H
4LZY Still there can be a neutral here and there ... or maybe not
mine so understand that the differences between ss and easy select are that the latter does not have a lowered one?
No, you're not mistaken.
There is a reduced one both there and there.
And the difference between SS and ES is one but very significant - the SS has a center differential, which means it is possible to drive with all-wheel drive on asphalt. What to do on ES is not recommended.

Good day, dear members of the forum! Does anyone know how to repair and generally how to remove the winch mechanism that holds the spare wheel? I have a spare wheel attached to the bottom of the car body (Montero sport 1998). There is a winch that winds the chain to fix the spare wheel. Yesterday I decided to try to remove the spare wheel, take it off, but back, when I decided to put it back in, it didn’t work. The problem is that the chain on the winch scrolls, as a result of which the spare wheel does not hold, but simply weighs. It's scary to drive without a spare. Please help me how to remove this mechanism and how to repair it? How is this winch attached to the body?
Regards!

All in the subject!!!
If Montero is going to buy and buy it in America, then, of course, customs clearance is a very topical issue, but if you don’t know, then write like that !!!

Well then! I haven't been here for a long time! I bought Montera, as I wanted - the model of 2000 is all the bells and whistles xls - the car is super, but after the Merc - like a stool, although the Pajero is simple - twice as worse - this is a stool without one leg! Guys, I haven't had any problems so far. The car came - super! Didn't do anything, just changed the fluids and filters, Oh, yes! It flew right onto the timing belt - and so - when they were at the Mitsubishi center - the sellers themselves were surprised, they say: "lucky you! Usually cars come much worse" Regarding the fact that something creaks and rattles, there is no such thing, the interior is quiet, although, on a strong ridged road there is a plastic sound somewhere in the back. Before that, I didn’t have a jeep, I drove a Mercedes, and in general, I considered only BMW and Mersedes to be real cars. But, to be honest, the Lexus RX 300 will be better for the city - it is more comfortable and soft. Still, I can not get used to the "smoothness" of the Montero. And so - a wheelbarrow - a class! I like it

Dear sports owners, tell me! Covered head unit on my sport. Apparently it was coded when I shot "-" from the battery.
Eats code, but I don't know. Help how to remove it? Visually, when you look, it seems to be "poured" into the panel. Really, in order to remove the radio, it will be necessary to remove the entire torpedo? Give me good advice!
When you picked up the car, they should have given you a whole bag with a passport and a card is still in it (I have one, at least a plastic one). There is a code in the passport, in my opinion it is on the card second from the top. Consists of four digits. Enter it and that's it. And if you can't find a book - go to the decoding - in a different way - no way.

Thank you for your advice! The seller did not give a card, let alone a book. That is, it was not there at all at the moment of purchase. And decoded the radio. Truth catches all the odd waves. But there is a CD changer. So far I'm using them.

and which of the owners of Monterikov sport went in the winter. Judging by all the posts, all-wheel drive on this jeep is constantly turned on and you can’t drive due to the lack of a center differential. How is it to ride in winter? dragging the butt a lot? Do you often have to connect before? I have experience of riding a rear-wheel drive cart in print, but not of this size. in the summer it's not a problem, but on the jeep you want more confidence when starting off at traffic lights. I'm really looking at this unit.

Hello everyone! In general, the problem was this. The spare tire did not tighten to the body. I have a spare wheel attached to the bottom of the car body (Montero sport 1998). There is a winch that winds the chain to fix the spare wheel. So when I took it apart, it turned out that two blades were broken, which tighten the chain when you turn the nut in the trunk. (Apparently they overtightened it). Apparently not repairable. You need to get a new or used one. The question is, if there is no disassembly and a new break to buy, from which car can you fit it? Who faced? And then without a spare wheel it’s somehow not very good to drive.
Regards!

Hello everyone! Explain to me how to turn on the cruise control. Ato I try to turn on, but the car still does not keep the speed. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...
Basic functions:
1) Press the button at the end of the cruise control lever. On the dashboard, the KK indicator lights up on the left - KK is ready for work.
2) Briefly swing the KK lever down (at the bottom there is a small triangle looking down and the inscription SET (set). The car must keep the speed that the car had at that moment.
ZY KK does not turn off at a speed of less than 40 km .h (well, or so)
Additional features:
- After pressing the brake pedal, KK does not hold. reset) located just above the inscription SET. The car will automatically pick up speed to the previous memorized value.0018 - to increase the speed of the car when driving on the KK, you can lift the KK lever up (as in the previous case) and hold it in this position. The car will gradually increase speed. After releasing the lever, the machine will maintain it at the new (higher) level. Simply swinging the lever up increases the speed by 1 mph.
- to reduce the speed memorized by the KK, press the KK lever and hold it. The car will slow down, and after releasing the lever, maintain it at a new (lower) level. If you simply swing the lever downwards, the speed is reduced by 1 mph. (you can swing several times, the speed will decrease by the number of miles per hour equal to the number of clicks).
