Understanding ATV Wheel Offsets |
One of the most frequently asked questions we get is "How do the ATV Wheel offsets work?" The offset of a wheel will determine where the wheel sits in relation to your vehicle. Every rim has an offset that consists of 2 numbers that are measurements. The first number is the measurement (in inches) from the inside lip of the rim, to the center of the rim where the hub and rim meet. The 2nd number is the measurement (in inches) from the hub to the outside lip of the rim. For example: An ATV wheel with a 4+3 offset will measure 4" from the inside lip to the center of the rim where the hub and rim meet, and then it will measure 3" from the hub to the outside lip. The two numbers added together will total the overall width of the rim. Here are a few pictures and some additional information to help you understand ATV rim offsets. |
Positive Offset vs. Negative Offset? |
A positive offset wheel has more rim in behind the hub of your ATV and less rim out in front of the hub. A positive offset will have a larger number first and and smaller number second. For example. 4+2, 5+2, 4+3, 5+3 |
A negative offset wheel has less rim in behind the hub of your ATV and more rim out in front of the hub. A negative offset will have a smaller number first and a larger number second. For example. 2+5, 3+4, 3+5 |
Correct wheel offsets for STRAIGHT REAR AXLE models? |
FRONT - You will need a positive offset for the front which could be one of several options, it just depends on what is offered in the rims you are buying. You will want the first number to be larger than the second number. For example, 4+2, 4+3, 5+2 |
REAR - You will need a negative offset for the rear which could be one of a couple options, it just depends on what is offered in the rims you are buying. You will want the first number to be smaller than the first number. For example, 2+5, 3+5, 3+4 |
Correct offsets for INDEPENDENT REAR SUSPENSION? |
You have two options: |
OPTION 1 - You can buy rims that are all 4 the same width. If you buy rims that are the same width front and back you will want to get the same positive offset rim for the front and back. For example, a 5+2, 4+3, or 6+1 (depending on your machine) and you would buy the exact same offset for the front and the rear. This works great even though most factory rims are two different widths. You don't have to stick with that, you can buy the same rims front and rear and run the same size tires front and rear or you can get two different widths of tires and mount them on the same size rims.
|
OPTION 2 - You can buy rims that are two different widths. There are some rims out there that are offered in a skinnier size for the front and a wider size for the rear just like your factory rims. If you go this route you will still want to run a positive offset for both the front and the rear but they will not be the same offset because they are two different widths. For example, you would order a 4+2 or a 4+3 for the front and a 4+4 or 5+3 for the rear, it would just depend on what is being offered for the style of rims you are buying. |
Correct wheel offsets to WIDEN MY STANCE? |
Wide stance offsets (aka negative offsets) can only be used on ATVs or UTVs with the Independent Rear Suspension, and they are not available in all fitments. They are generally used on UTVs to widen the stance & increase stability. However, they can also be used on some ATVs if you are looking to widen your stance and make your machine more extreme and aggressive looking.
In order to widen your stance substantially you would want to order a rim with a negative offset, so the first number is smaller than the second number. For example, 2+5, 3+4, 3+5. Another option to widen your stance is to use wheel spacers. |
Example of 5+2 offset: |
A 5+2 offset is the most standard offset when it comes to ATV wheels. The face of the rims is closer to the exposed edge and the majority of the rim & tire sit in underneath your ATV. The 5+2 offset is used on the front of almost any utility ATV/UTV. A 5+2 offset is also used on the rear of any Independent rear suspension model ATV. If your ATV has the independent rear suspension it will use the exact same offset on front and rear when you buy aftermarket rims. If your ATV has the straight rear axle you'll need to order a different offset for the rear which is shown below. |
Example of 2+5 offset: |
A 2+5 offset is most commonly used on the rear of any ATV that has a straight axle on back. These are commonly referred to as "deep dish" or "negative offset" wheels because the face of the rim is recessed in about 5" from the outside edge. 2+5 offsets can also be used on front and rear of an independent rear suspension model ATV/UTV if you are looking to increase the width of your machine and gain stability. A 2+5 offset wheel will stick out about 3 inches wider per side from the standard 5+2 offset wheel. |
Measuring your ATV's Bolt Pattern: |
When measuring your ATV's bolt pattern you will want to check both the front and rear. Some ATV models use a different bolt pattern on front and back so you'll want to double check yours before purchasing new wheels. You can also view our ATV Bolt Pattern guide to find out. |
If you have ever seen a set of ATV or UTV rims and tried to find the right size to fit your vehicle or tried to figure out what tires will fit on the wheels then you may have been very confused. Looking for rim size to accommodate your vehicle can be tough when you look at the size and it says something like (10×5 4+1 4/156) which is what my Polaris Outlaw 525S has. It is not very intuitive as to what these random numbers mean but I will let you know exactly how to interpret these numbers and exactly what they do.
There are three sections to wheel size. Each is separated by a comma. The sets of numbers gives a different measurement of the wheel. From left to right the numbers correspond to rim size (diameter and width), wheel offset, and bolt pattern.
UTV and ATV manufacturers build their vehicles to many different specifications so it can be tough to find all the info you need. I have a chart down below that lists several of the models and their wheel and tire sizes from the factory. Before that, let’s go over exactly what each wheel measurement means.
If you want to go check out Amazon’s selection of wheels then you can go ahead and check this table below. They have a very nice selection of wheels to choose from.
To measure the diameter of a wheel you need to measure the width of the tire bead portion of the wheel Do not measure the outer portion of the rim or this will give you an inaccurate measurement. The numbers from my example (10×5 4+1 4/156) the 10×5 is the diameter (10inches) and width (5 inches) just like the image below.
Measuring wheel offset is a more involved process than diameter and width. The offset is the distance from the center line of the wheel to the hub mounting surface. The center line of the wheel is also called the center weld.
In the diagram above you see the offset is 3+2. The backside of the wheel, where the 3 inch measurement is located, is called the bell. It is the outside measurement from the center weld to the tire bead.
The 2 inch portion is called the nose and when you add the 3+2 you get your overall width at 5 inches.
When the mounting surface is in the true center of the wheel, there is zero offset. So if you had an even measurement on either side of the center weld it would be considered zero offset
A positive offset is when the bell of the wheel is wider than the nose. The image above is what would be considered a positive offset of 3 inches on the bell and 2 inches on the nose.
The nose of the wheel is wider in a negative offset. Imagine if the measurements were reversed in the image above and we had a 2 inch bell and 3 inch nose.
Measure from the center weld to the center of the tire bead area on both sides of the wheel. The outer measurement on the nose will be the one with the valve stem. The measurement from the center weld to the rear of the rim will be the bell section. You can then determine what offset your rims have.
The only way to change your lug pattern from what was installed from the factory is to change the hubs to the bolt pattern of your choice. Your ATV will have one of three patterns: 3-lug, 4-lug or a 5-lug and they do come in different sizes. To find out which size you need, you will have to measure the pattern. With the example I used in the first paragraph, 4/156, “4” is the number of bolt holes and “156” is the distance measured in mm.
Here is a chart to help you quickly reference your vehicles factory wheel and tire sizes.

When choosing wheels for an ATV, you, unlike motorcycle wheels, will not depend on the size prescribed by the manufacturer of the ATV. The size and material of the disk here can be changed depending on the needs. Before talking about which ATV rims are best suited to your riding style, it is worth recalling the marking of ATV and UTV rims.
ATV disc marking
Let's demonstrate how to read the disc markings using a specific example: for example, the disc for an ATV has the designations 8x8, 3+5, 4/110. So its diameter, which is indicated in the first digit, is 8 inches. The second number is the inner diameter of the tire, it must match the diameter of the rim.
The next two digits are the offset of the disk, which shows the distance from the mating side of the disk and its conditional middle. At the same time, the marking of the disk on the ATV shows the displacement of the inner and outer sides, the difference between which determines the negative, positive or zero offset of the disk. In our case, the disk overhang is negative and is -2 (3-5=-2). The next figure shows the number of holes in the disk, in our example there are 4. The last designation is the distance between the holes, measured in mm., In our case it is 110 mm.
Select wheels for ATV
Alloy wheels for ATV have a number of advantages over stamped ones. Let's talk about them so that you can understand whether you need to focus on these pluses or leave stamping on an ATV more appropriate.
First, the alloy wheels on the ATV can be chosen wider than the standard ones. This, in turn, allows you to install non-standard tires on an ATV that will not get up "donut". On alloy rims, a wide ATV tire will increase the contact patch, which means more flotation. However, not only alloy wheels on an ATV solve the problem of increasing the wheel track - spacers for disks are also used for this.
The second advantage that alloy wheels are chosen for on an ATV is the reduction in the weight of the unsprung part of the ATV. ATV races are held in a variety of terrain, including relatively flat ground where speed is important and casting will have a distinct advantage here. In other cases, their disadvantage is emphasized - fragility. However, some manufacturers of ATV wheels, such as ITP, give a lifetime warranty on casting, the very fact of which speaks of great confidence in their products and makes them reconsider their attitude towards alloy wheels.
The third reason, which, oddly enough, also matters is the aesthetic side. Despite the fact that the ATV pursues purely utilitarian or sporting goals, many people like to combine functionality and attractive appearance, which can be achieved by choosing an ATV casting.
In addition, many ATV alloy wheels come with beadlocks, and the latter are simply indispensable when driving on flat tires. As you know, with a decrease in pressure, which is done to overcome off-road, the tires have a tendency to disassemble. The easiest and most reliable way to keep the tire on the rim is to use beadlocks that attach the tire to the rim. Badlocks are a steel ring with holes, in place and in number they are divided into two types: one-sided and two-sided. Moreover, it is usually enough to install a one-sided beadlock on a cast wheel for an ATV, since the load on the inside of the wheel is not large. Only hard off road on fully flat tires requires the installation of reversible beadlocks.
Of course, the use of beadlocks imposes certain restrictions: the speed, as a rule, should not exceed 60 km/h, it becomes much more difficult to balance the wheels with beadlocks, in addition, it is necessary to constantly monitor their condition - clean, tighten. Be that as it may, beadlocks have been produced since the 1980s and Off Road on an ATV is rarely done without. The cast rim and beadlock are welded on, the outer edge of the tire is not put on the rim, but is pressed with a beadlock ring, fixed with a large number of bolts. The inner edge of the tire, if the beadlock is one-sided, is kept as usual on the hump (ring protrusions at the edge of the disk).
ATV Wheel Manufacturers
ATVs are nowhere near the popularity of cars and there aren't as many wheel manufacturers here. They are mainly represented by companies that produce off-road wheels for off-road. One of the leaders in the manufacture of alloy wheels for ATVs is the Canadian company ITP, which is famous for its excellent design and excellent durability of its products. The manufacturer is also interesting for its development of System Six, which allows you to select and replace the finish for the disk. ITP aluminum rims have a replaceable center insert, so if the old one is tired or out of order, you can choose another one in a different color scheme.
Also popular are Black Rock ATV rims, which come with negative offset to increase road tread. Black Rock discs have a wide variety of colors, among the company's products there are alloy wheels for ATVs with beadlocks.
Well, of course, ATV wheels can be presented by a native manufacturer who manufactures it himself, or entrusts it to a major player in the market. In addition, in extreme cases, car wheels of suitable size can also be installed on an ATV, if, of course, spacers are used.

We are all used to seeing large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires on expensive and powerful cars . As a rule, they look spectacular and give the appearance of the car an aggressive and dynamic look. Cheap small cars, on the contrary, are equipped with miniature wheels, which often make them look like toys. What affects the size of the wheels and the profile of the rubber, the portal "AvtoVzglyad" found out.
Ivan Flyagin
Driving characteristics of the car directly depend on the diameter of the disk and tire profile. Those tires where the profile height (it is indicated by the second digit) is less than 55% are considered low-profile: 205/55 R16, 225/45 R17, 225/40 R18 and so on.
The lower the tire profile, the larger the disc diameter, and the worse the rubber dampens road surface imperfections and better transmits the canvas relief to the passenger compartment. Passengers traveling in such a car on a rough, broken road are doomed to jolts and shaking.
Moreover, not only people in the passenger compartment will suffer from this, but also the suspension of the car, the elements of which will take the blow. Along with the wear of the chassis, the operating period of such rubber is reduced. Due to the increased contact patch of the tire on the road, it tends to be more prone to noise and can also increase the effect of hydroplaning on wet roads. Such tires are capricious even to the slightest deviation of the internal pressure from the norm. After all, they are more expensive than conventional tyres, as is the cost of installing them when replacing them.
Large wheels with wide low-profile tires improve handling and directional stability of the car, as well as increase its dynamic and speed characteristics. They have better braking properties, and they usually dampen body roll in corners. In the "offset" you can also record the mentioned fact that the car with such "skating rinks" looks more impressive.
As a rule, small diameter wheels are equipped with high profile tires with a profile height of more than 60%. Such tires provide a better ride and increase passenger comfort when driving on a bumpy road, damping surface flaws. As a result: the suspension experiences less stress. In addition, cars with such tires, as a rule, have increased cross-country ability, acoustic comfort and a long service life.
At the same time, compared to low-profile tires, they have poor grip, they can cause roll in corners and a long braking distance. In addition, high-profile tires do not have the best effect on the steering of a car, although such changes are not critical..
view due to the installation of large wheels. But it should be borne in mind that any manufacturer configures the chassis of each specific model for a certain size of disks and tires. Therefore, changing the outer diameter of the wheel will inevitably affect the driving characteristics of the car, and not in the best way.
In addition: the higher the wheel, the lower the odometer and speedometer readings will be relative to the true values. It is even more dangerous when home-grown craftsmen change the offset of the rim, expanding the track, relative to the factory value. This inevitably leads to negative consequences, both for handling and for the life of the suspension, and especially wheel bearings.
