How does discount tire warranty work

Discount Tire’s Replacement Policy (Repair, Refund + More)

Do you know what the Discount Tire replacement policy is? Well, you are at the perfect place to find the answer to such a question.

Discount Tire is the largest independent tire retail company in the world. From its humble beginnings in a single store in Michigan over 60 years ago, Discount Tire (known as America’s Tire in parts of California) now has over 1,000 locations all over the United States.

Discount Tire sets itself apart from large, big box tire retailers with its excellent customer service and expert staff.

One of the best advantages of buying tires at Discount Tire is its tire replacement policy. Discount Tire offers a program called Certificate for Repair, Refund, or Replacement that you can purchase as an add-on when you buy your tires. Similar to a warranty, this Certificate is basically an exchange program for your tires if your original tire has an issue.

Let’s go through all the details of Discount Tire’s tire replacement and repair policies, including their unique Certificate program.

Table of Contents

What is Discount Tire’s Certificate for Repair, Refund, or Replacement all about?

Most tire retailers will offer a prorated warranty which offers partial refunds depending on the age of the tire.

Discount Tire does offer a free, prorated road hazard warranty as well, however, they also offer a Certificate for Repair, Refund, or Replacement. Here are the details about this program:

  • If your tire becomes defective or fails due to a non-repairable road hazard and can no longer hold air, the Certificate covers its repair or replacement, as long as the tire is less than 3 years old and has more than 3/32” of tire tread depth remaining.
  • With the Certificate, Discount Tire will either repair the tire or refund the full purchase price of the original tire including sales tax. You then have the option to purchase a replacement tire at the refund price. There is no prorating according to tire wear.

How do I get a Certificate? Is it free?

The Certificate for Repair, Refund, or Replacement is not free, but it may be worth it if you buy expensive tires or drive on rough, problematic roads.

The cost of a Certificate is based on a percentage of the price of the tire you are buying, generally from $10 to $100 per tire.

When you purchase a tire from Discount Tire (or Discount Tire Direct), your Sales Representative will ask you if you want to purchase the Certificate.

If you decline at the time but then change your mind, don’t worry. You have up to 30 days after purchasing your tire to buy the Certificate. You can either go back into the store or you can call them.

How do I redeem my Certificate?

If you find your tire is damaged or defective and can no longer hold air, you’ll need to check a few things before redeeming your Certificate for a replacement tire.

First, you’ll need the sales receipt (or online proof-of-purchase). You’ll also need to make sure your tire meets these two criteria: the tire must be less than 3 years old, and the tread depth must be more than 3/32”.

If you are close to a Discount Tire location:

If you need to replace your damaged tire and you are close to a Discount Tire location, you’re in luck. Head to the location with the damaged tire and receipt.

They will validate the Certificate and inspect the tire. After inspection, they will determine if they can repair it.

If they can’t repair it they will give you a refund, which you can use to purchase a replacement.

If you aren’t close to a Discount Tire location:

Unfortunately, you may need to replace your damaged tire where it is not convenient to get to a store location, or after hours when locations are closed.

If that is the case, you can call Discount Tire Consumer Affairs at 800-589-9642 or 888-774-6560. They will guide you through the Certificate redemption process.

If you had to make an emergency repair and replaced your tire:

In the worst-case scenario, you may have to make an emergency repair and simply can’t get to a Discount Tire location.

Luckily, you may still be able to redeem your Certificate and get the cost of the replacement tire reimbursed.

Call Consumer Affairs at 800-589-9642 or 888-774-6560 within 5 business days of the date of repair and they will determine if you can get reimbursement.

What if I don’t purchase a Certificate? Can I still get a replacement tire?

If your tire becomes damaged or is defective and you didn’t purchase a Certificate, Discount Tire offers a free, prorated road hazard warranty as an alternative.

Most brand-name tires also come with a manufacturer’s limited warranty, which will vary depending on the brand of the tire.

Finally, many tire brands will offer a promotional warranty period (usually lasting 30 days) to encourage customers to try their tires.

If you need to replace your defective tire, simply bring it in with your purchase receipt or online proof-of-purchase.

There is no time limit to Discount Tire’s road hazard warranty, however, remember it is prorated, meaning you will get less of a refund as time passes after the purchase date.

Are there exceptions to the Certificate Program?

As with any warranty program, there are some exceptions to Discount Tire’s Certificates.

The following situations will not be covered by the Certificate program:

  • Damage caused by a vehicle collision, vandalism, tire chains, a mechanical defect with your vehicle, abuse, or normal wear and tear.
  • Any pre-existing damage will not be covered.
  • Any loss that may have resulted from damage to the tire.
  • Tires with less than 3/32” of tread depth remaining are not covered.
  • Tires older than 3 years old.

Does the Certificate program cover all tires sold at Discount Tire?

All tires sold at Discount Tire will be covered by their Certificate program or a manufacturer’s warranty.

However, there are some types of tires that do not come with a manufacturer’s warranty due to the nature of their use.

This includes competition tires, ATV tires, mud tires, trailer tires, and some winter tires.

Is Discount Tire's Warranty Transferable? (Coverage + More)

Have you ever asked yourself or your friend if Discount Tire Warranty is transferable? What does a tire warranty cover? Well, you are at the perfect place to find the answer to such a question.

Discount Tire (also known as America’s Tire in parts of California) is America’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer. Starting in 1960 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Discount Tire now has over 1,000 stores across the country and an online presence called Discount Tire Direct.

Discount Tire prides itself on its customer service and exclusive tire warranty.

So, is Discount Tire Warranty transferable to a new vehicle? No Discount Tire warranty is not transferable. Discount Tire does not allow the transfer of Certificates to new owners, except in North Carolina, and most tire manufacturers also do not allow warranty transfers. In addition to the manufacturer’s limited warranty, Discount Tire offers its own tire warranty program called “Certificate for Repair, Refund or Replacement”. This Certificate, when bought at the time of your new tire purchase, covers tire failures for 3 years.

In this post, we’ll help you learn all you need to know about Discount Tire’s warranty policies, and how you actually may be able to have a warranty transferred after all.

Table of Contents

What are Discount Tire Certificates?

Discount Tire offers a unique tire replacement program called Certificate for Repair, Refund, or Replacement. These Certificates are redeemable if the tire becomes defective or damaged.

When covered by the Certificate, the purchase price of the tire gets refunded to you (including sales tax). You then have the option to purchase a replacement tire for the refund price. There is no pro-rating according to wear of the tire.

When you purchase a new tire or set of tires, Discount Tire’s sales representatives will ask you if you’d like to purchase a Certificate.

Certificates generally cost between $10-$100 per tire, depending on the purchase price of the tire you are buying. If you decline the coverage but then change your mind, you have up to 30 days from the tire purchase date to buy the Certificate.

What does the Certificate cover?

Discount Tire’s Certificate program covers tires that can no longer hold air due to a non-repairable road hazard, a defect in materials, or a defect in workmanship.

Covered tires need to have more than 3/32” left of tread depth, and must be less than 3 years old.

For instance, as long as you properly take care of your tire and it is less than 3 years old, you are covered for a new tire if the covered tire gets a puncture, gets damaged by a pothole, or just becomes defective.

Is a Discount Tire Certificate transferable to a new owner?

The official answer is no. The certificate itself mentions that it is non-transferable and non-renewable, except in North Carolina, where it can be transferred to a new owner within the 3 year period.

Non-renewable means the certificate cannot be re-used once redeemed. A new certificate has to be purchased for the new replacement tire.

However, if you are the new owner of a vehicle outfitted with tires from Discount Tire, don’t despair just yet. You may actually be able to get the tire’s Certificate transferred to you.

Some Discount Tire representatives state that the Certificate is transferable to a new owner, as long as it hasn’t been redeemed before.

According to one representative, the new owner will need to present the original tire invoice to a Discount Tire customer representative and have the Certificate put into their name.

So, the answer is a little murky. While the official policy is that Discount Tire Certificates are non-transferable, there are reports of new owners being able to get them transferred.

As a new owner, it is worth getting the original tire invoice and contacting Discount Tire directly to verify.

Are manufacturer’s tire warranties transferable to a new owner?

Discount Tire offers tires from several major tire manufacturers. Each manufacturer has their own limited warranty with their own terms and conditions, however, each policy specifically states that their warranty only covers the original purchaser of the tire and only on the same vehicle where it was originally installed.

These manufacturer warranties include:

  • Bridgestone – “Platinum Pact”
  • Continental – “Total Confidence”
  • Michelin – “Promise Plan”
  • Nexen – “Total Coverage”
  • Vogue – “Promise Warranty”

What types of tires do warranties cover?

Manufacturer warranties usually cover tires over 20,000 to 100,000 miles of use. Some types of tires do not come with manufacturer warranties, including most ATV/UTV tires, winter tires, trailer tires, mud tires, and competition tires.

ATV

This is because they are made of special compounds that deteriorate more rapidly than regular tires and won’t last through a typical warranty time period.

What if I didn’t purchase a Certificate?

You are not required to purchase a Certificate when you purchase new tires at Discount Tire. If you choose not to participate in the Certificate program, you still have options for warranty coverage at Discount Tire.

All tires sold at Discount Tire come with a free, prorated road hazard damage warranty. Most tires also come with a manufacturer’s limited warranty.

If you need a replacement tire due to a defect, simply bring in the tire and the purchase receipt to any Discount Tire.

There is no time limit to bring in a defective tire, however, remember that the prorated road hazard warranty will cover less of the total cost of the tire as time passes.

I’m the original owner, do I have to have the receipt when making a claim?

It is quickest and easiest to have your purchase receipt in hand when you return to the store for a tire warranty claim. However, if you’ve lost the original receipt, the staff at Discount Tire will do their best to locate an alternative proof of purchase for you.

If you don’t have the receipt, be aware that they may need additional information from you in order to process the return or replacement, so bring in the original method of payment and a valid ID.

Remember, many tire warranty claims are null and void if there are signs of misuse or lack of maintenance on the tire, so make sure you follow manufacturer guidelines to properly care for your tires.

  • Free tire repair or what is an extended manufacturer's warranty

Author: Kirill Savchenko

Tires, like any other product, are under warranty. If, a couple of weeks after the purchase, the cord suddenly bursts, the tread peels off, then such a tire, in the event of an expert detection of a manufacturing defect, should be replaced or the money returned for it. It is obvious. Few people know that a regular puncture or hitting a curb with the subsequent appearance of a hernia on the tire is also covered by the warranty case. True, only if the warranty is extended.

On the one hand, the situation is quite strange. After all, the owner of the car can damage the wheel through his own carelessness. Having chosen the wrong speed on a country road, having swept along the roadside, littered with pieces of iron, and finally, due to insufficient experience, having hooked a curb with a wheel. That is, in this case, all expenses should be on his conscience.

On the other hand, the same damage can be received through no fault of your own. For example, due to the negligence of road services, which did not repair a pothole in the asphalt in time, did not remove the roadbed after an accident, or left a sewer hatch open. But, as you know, it is very difficult to recover anything from these organizations (and only within the framework of legal proceedings), and again, all damage is compensated by the driver.

Then why on earth would tire manufacturers take such risks and be willing to pay for sins they had nothing to do with? Of course, it's about reputation. Not all brands offer an extended warranty, but well-known and, as a rule, expensive ones. Moreover, not for the entire range of tires.

It is easy to guess that such risks are initially included in the retail price of tires and none of these companies will engage in "charity".

And, finally, it is not the manufacturing company that will directly solve the problems of the owner of the car and tires, but the dealer with whom the company has an extended warranty agreement. And this means that, having bought tires in a container at the car market or from hands, you should not count on any free repair or replacement.

But the most important nuance is that if you puncture a wheel on the road and put on a spare tire, you most likely will not go to your tire dealer for a free repair. Firstly, because time is more expensive, and secondly, due to the fact that it is not at all comfortable to ride on a dokatka or spare tire for a long time, and tire fitting can most often be found ten kilometers away.

In general, an extended tire warranty is more of an option than a 100% owner-friendly option. However, each of the tire manufacturers assumes strictly defined obligations, which may differ from brand to brand. So what do they offer?

Bridgestone

When buying 4 tires or more and registering for the extended warranty program within 14 days, the owner is entitled to a free repair or replacement of tires with the following unintentional damage within a year. Puncture, cut, sidewall swelling, tire burst, spikes falling out.

But there are 18 clauses under which you are not entitled to free compensation. For example, clause 11 states that a tire that has been repaired does not participate in the program. The tire you received as a gift, as well as with damage caused by operation without pressure, is not included. The list of models includes several dozen positions, but they are all from the top lines.

Continental

This brand is somewhat simpler. But you must personally come to the dealer for tires. Get a warranty coupon, sales and cash receipts. In this case, during the year there will be free repair and replacement in case of a puncture, cut, swelling of the sidewall.

For winter tires, there is also a compensation for the loss of 10% of the studs within 3,000 km or 2 months of operation. The vehicle must not be used for business purposes and the tires must have a residual tread depth of at least 4mm.

The list of models is also impressive, as in the previous case, but the models, again, are mainly from the premium line.

Dunlop

The extended warranty covers accidental damage to a tire that renders it unusable. Valid for a year even if you purchased one tire. To repair or replace a tire, present the tire and receipt to an authorized retailer.

The only problem is that the company undertakes to replace the tire within 180 days. Free tire fitting is provided only in case of tire repair, and in case of replacement - at the expense of the client.

Standard extended warranty damage list: bulge, tear, cut, puncture. There are eighteen reasons for refusing a guarantee. The peculiarity is that the loss of spikes does not fall under the extended warranty in any case. About 50 tire models fall under the program, including even Falken, which are exotic for Russia.

Gislaved

Subsidiary brand Continental declares right away that only tires with a 17” rim diameter are covered under its extended warranty program.

Next, almost everything is standard, but the buyer for Gislaved is a retailer and he has all relations only with him. Puncture, cut, swelling are recognized as damages, but tires are replaced only if their dimensions exceed 6 mm in diameter. Spike loss is not covered by the program under any circumstances.

The list of documents required to implement the extended warranty is not small, both for the end user and for the buyer, i. e. the retailer. And if, when replacing a tire, it is not possible to find the desired model, an analogue is offered. The Gislaved Extended Warranty is only valid for individuals who purchase tires from authorized retailers.

The program is valid for one year from the date of purchase and each wheel purchased is covered only once. The list of models is small: for the summer range - UrbanSpeed and UltraSpeed, for the winter range - NordFrost 5/100/200, SoftFrost 3/200.

Goodyear

This brand has chosen to refer to the extended warranty as "Premium Warranty". This does not change the essence - the damage falling under it is standard: puncture / cut, swelling and rupture of the sidewall. The advantage is that the program is valid even with the purchase of one tire, and the model range that falls under the extended warranty is really large and is not limited to the top segment. The only exceptions are tires for light commercial vehicles, as well as the Wrangler AT / SA, Wrangler AT / SA +, Wrangler AT / R, Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar, Wrangler Duratrac and Wrangler MT / R with Kevlar models.

Goodyear Premium Warranty is only valid if the warranty certificate and proof of purchase of Goodyear passenger tires are registered on the manufacturer's portal within 30 days of purchase.

The Korean company clearly indicates that its extended warranty applies to tires purchased only at the centers of the official dealer "SHINSERVICE" and some others. Moreover, the company explained that it is official dealers who are developing this program, and Kumho only supports it financially. Types of damage and prerequisites are completely standard: a tread depth of at least 4 mm, but you need to purchase at least four tires.

A prerequisite is the presence of a correctly completed warranty card, which the consumer receives at the time of purchase of tires, as well as the presence of a sales receipt, delivery note or work order indicating the date of purchase, model, size and cost of the tire.

It is interesting that if you need to replace one tire and in the absence of this model, the manufacturer changes two at once. Thus, the rule of mandatory installation of two identical tires on one axle is observed. The list of models Kumho does not regulate.

Maxxis

The Maxxis Extended Individual Warranty is valid for two years from the date of purchase for standard damage, which is good enough. However, the list of models is small: NP3 Arctic Trekker, NP5 Premitra Ice Nord, SP-02 Arctic Trekker, AP2 Allseason, WP-05 Arctic Trekker, NS3 Arctic Trekker, NS5 Premitra Ice Nord, SS-01 Ppresa SUV.

In addition, tire fitting is carried out at the expense of the client participating in the program, and repairs are carried out only by applying a universal patch or “fungus”. As in all other cases, registration in the program and purchase of tires from an authorized dealer is required.

One of the denials in the extended warranty states that the tires are not being inflated. Even if it is caused by mechanical damage. That is, in the event of a puncture or rupture of the tire, the car should immediately stop.

Michelin

The French company has one of the best extended warranties. Firstly, during the year from the date of purchase, the tire can be repaired for free an unlimited number of times and only changed - once.

Secondly, the warranty covers all models for passenger cars, off-road vehicles, and commercial vehicles under the MICHELIN trademark, purchased by both individuals and legal entities.

Minimum extended warranty restrictions. In particular, driving with broken wheel geometry, with the parking brake on and with the wrong pressure. This also includes acts of vandalism.

It is stated that the program works only when buying tires in the network of tire centers "SHINSERVICE" from 02/28/2019 to 03/01/2020 inclusive, but it is already known that it has been automatically extended for another year.

Nokian

The Finnish brand declares a lifetime extended warranty, but only on the Nokian Hakkapeliitta and Nokian Hakka models for cars and SUVs. Nokian Nordman is only valid for a year from the date of purchase.

Repair or replacement is carried out when the tread is worn up to no more than 4 mm of residual height, in case of punctures, tears, cuts and swelling of the sidewalls. The warranty must be activated on the company's website, but tires can be purchased from any authorized dealer, in a car dealership or even in an online store.

By the way, Nokian also introduced an electronic extended warranty system. It implies the absence of a paper warranty card. It is enough to register your purchase once and activate the warranty service from Nokian Tires in order to subsequently use the service to repair or replace a damaged tire.

Pirelli

The Italians called their extended warranty program Tirelife. To become a member, you need to purchase from two tires in the "SHINSERVICE" network and draw up a package of documents. In case of standard operational damage, the tire will be replaced or repaired free of charge. What's more, twice a year, the company guarantees a free tire inspection for hidden damage.

The program covers the entire Pirelli range, with the exception of Formula and truck tires. Valid for one year from the date of purchase.

For a complete understanding of all the conditions for providing extended warranty programs, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with them on the official websites of tire manufacturing companies.

Commentary by the expert of the company "SHINSERVICE"

Alexander Golubev,
expert "SHINSERVICE"

In our opinion, the extended warranty for tires is, first of all, the manufacturer's desire to demonstrate the quality of its product and show its customer focus. But, perhaps, not every client will be satisfied with the conditions of the proposed program from a particular tire brand. Most often, because the Russian car owner is not used to filling out any extra paperwork, and prefers to repair the tire immediately after damage. Not tied to a specific dealer. However, those who operate their car primarily in the city, where there are many shops offering extended warranty tire repairs and replacements, may enjoy this program. In addition, high quality repairs from an authorized dealer will be guaranteed.
