How long was mayweather retired

Is Floyd Mayweather retired? Former champion steps back into ring for 2022 exhibition boxing fight

Floyd Mayweather has had a long and storied boxing career. He has beaten a who’s who of fighters over the years, and collected several titles across multiple weight classes. His professional career may be over, but that doesn’t mean he hasn't stepped in the ring every now and then.

Yes, Mayweather retired from boxing in 2017. Initially stepping away in 2015 after facing Andre Berto, he returned for a big payday against MMA star Conor McGregor. Mayweather reportedly made over $100 million for his final bout. The McGregor fight ended a long career which started in 1996 and titles in the super-featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and light-middleweight divisions. “Money’s” career record stands at 50-0.

Since that bout, Mayweather has focused on his gentlemen's club called Girl Collection, The Money Team Racing, and Mayweather Promotions. The latter he has used to work with some of the top boxing stars out there, including Gervonta Davis.

Mayweather has also competed in exhibition bouts. In 2018, Mayweather fought kickboxing champion Tenshin Nasukawa at a RIZIN event. Mayweather knocked the young star down several times before beating him via TKO. The fight only lasted one round. In 2021, Mayweather returned, facing YouTuber Logan Paul in Miami. It was a non-scored bout that went the distance.

On May 21, Mayweather faces former sparring partner Don Moore in another exhibition bout. They will be fighting in Abu Dhabi inside the Etihad Arena on Yas Island. It appears that Mayweather can do these type of events whenever he wants while earning a massive paycheck. Speaking with Fight Hype, Mayweather talked about remaining relevant in boxing and not paying attention to critics.

“I was able to leave boxing on my own terms and now the boxing critics are upset that I am still able to milk and finesse the sport of boxing by throwing exhibitions,” Mayweather said, via Mirror. “Sixteen minutes and I am able to get eight and nine figures from the fruits of my labor. Once again I am not hurting for my money, I am far from hurting for money. I didn't retire from getting money.”

How Many Times Did Floyd Mayweather Retire From Boxing?: A Look at His Retirement History

Floyd Mayweather is regarded as the face of modern era boxing. With a series of one-sided performances in the ring, Mayweather stuck everyone’s eye and retired with one immaculate boxing stint. But if you feel ‘TBE’ only hung up his gloves in 2017, then you’re mistaken.

Mayweather actually hung up his gloves from the sport and returned multiple times.

The very first time ‘Pretty Boy’ signed off from the game was back in 2007. After he claimed one of his biggest career wins against Oscar De La Hoya, Mayweather asserted on taking the retirement. But he vanquished those plans and began preparing for a bout once again.

After the De La Hoya bout, the undefeated kingpin of boxing got lined up to face Ricky Hatton for the WBC welterweight title. Here, Mayweather won this thrilling encounter and condemned Hatton to his first career loss. Six months after this fight, Mayweather put out an official statement regarding his retirement.

He said, “I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead. There comes a time when money doesn’t matter. I just can’t do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.”

After this statement, Mayweather didn’t compete for the whole of 2008. He only came out of retirement in 2009 and boxed Juan Manuel Marquez. Following that, he kept fighting, even accepting the ‘fight of the century’ against his long-time nemesis, Manny Pacquiao.

Fans expected Mayweather to finally retire from the sport after such a humongous fight. But ‘Pretty Boy’ took up a bout against Andre Berto and retired after going 49-0.

What Floyd Mayweather's retirement looks like

What Floyd Mayweather's retirement looks like

Match TV is about how the most popular boxer in the world lives without fighting.

The usual word "retirement" is not too suitable to describe the everyday life of Floyd Mayweather. The champion retired from boxing, but continues to live widely. He scatters $100 bills at strip clubs, flaunts expensive watches, and buys new houses. He is just thinking of cutting the famous $20 million car fleet: “I use my planes more often, and I can invest the money in the education of children.” Mayweather always believed that a person with such an exceptional career as his should have an unusual life. Floyd left boxing as a five-weight champion with a track record of 49-0. For one fight with Manny Pacquiao, he earned about 300 million dollars. He was repeatedly recognized as the highest paid athlete in the world according to Forbes.

With his craving for grandiosity and independence, Mayweather clearly looks up to Jack Johnson, the first black boxing world champion. At the beginning of the 20th century, Johnson aroused hatred and even fear in all white America. He drove the first cars, married white women, and, while traveling, rented entire train cars. This is all in those days when black Americans could easily be lynched on the street. Unlike Johnson, Floyd does not oppose himself to the rest of society, but lives with his retinue as if parallel to it, building his own closed world with his own laws. Like Johnson, Mayweather blurs the line between myth and reality.

Money

Floyd's nickname is Money. The name of his team and clothing label is The Money Team. The cornerstone of his philosophy of life: “Money motivates me. But in the first place in my life is God. He gave me the best hands in my business to pray, box and count money." Money for Floyd is a symbol of success - “in childhood, we lived seven of us in one room where there was no light and water. Mom used drugs, dad was in prison.” He always carries a lot of cash with him in designer duffel bags and backpacks. Mayweather paid $7.7 million in cash for his new Miami Beach mansion.

The world tour that the champion has arranged after his retirement seems to bring him the most money now. Over the past 8 months, Floyd has traveled to Moscow, Istanbul, London, Rome, Paris, Cairo, Dubai, Macorocco and many other places. And his famous adviser Al Haymon helps to invest the earned hundreds of millions: “Floyd Mayweather Sr. is my dad. Al Haymon is my father. My dad taught me boxing, my dad taught me business." Haymon is a music promoter and one of the most powerful figures in modern boxing.

Mayweather also spends a lot on charity, but does not like to talk about it: "I will be criticized no matter what I do."

Strip club

Floyd has a promotion company and a music label, but he doesn't talk about them with the same enthusiasm he does about his new project, the Girls Collection strip club in Las Vegas. The opening is planned within two months. Mayweather is a longtime strip club fan and hosts house parties with a lot of lightly dressed girls: “I love this kind of entertainment. Some consider this to be something bad, but we are born without clothes. The naked body is very beautiful.” Floyd does not reveal details, but promises something grandiose, expensive and luxurious. Apparently something like Jay Gatsby's parties, but with half-naked ladies and even more scope than Scott Fitzgerald described. Work is in full swing. According to Floyd, all three of his planes are in action - team members fly from city to city, watching the most beautiful girls in the country. "Each region has a special type of appearance, I want them all to be represented in my club."

Women

Appearing in public accompanied by several beautiful women at once is an integral part of Floyd's image in recent years. But the champion went further. Now Mayweather practices and preaches polygamy. “I don’t want to call it racism, but people admire Hugh Hefner for what they scold me for. Marriage is not for everyone. Take, for example, the animal world. A male always has many females. This is the law of nature. And we are simply the smartest animals in the world. Social networks often talk about different types of women. I prefer to think more broadly: I love women in general. I like Filipinas, Mexicans, black women, white women." Floyd blurs the difference between myth and reality. It is unclear whether such statements are part of a new image, the owner of a strip club, black Hugh Hefner, or, indeed, a dream come true. On the air of the Hollywood Unlocked program, Floyd confessed his love for three ladies at once - Jamie Lynn, Melissia Brim and Dorali Medina. He treats everyone with emphatic respect. Everyone has their own business within The Money Team. “I love these women. Right now, I'm happy to live the way I live."

- Could one of these women be Mrs. Mayweather? the presenter asked.

“My daughter could be Mrs. Mayweather when she grows up and gets married,” Floyd replies.

The teenage daughter, sitting next to her, listening to her dad talk, smiles.

Floyd travels with Jamie Lin this spring:

Humility

"The Lord wanted only one thing to be perfect in me - a track record in boxing." Floyd tries to show humility and speak well of everyone. “He is young and now he needs to focus on his boxing career,” about a former friend, three-weight champion Adrian Broner, with whom they quarreled and exchanged barbs. “I wish him only the best,” about another former friend, rapper 50 Cent, who once announced that Floyd could not read. This may be humility, or maybe disguised pride: the champion is so generous that he can’t afford to be distracted by petty squabbles.

Since every remark he accidentally throws can become a newsbreak and a source of squabbles, Floyd developed a special style of communication. He no longer speaks in ordinary phrases, but in a kind of diplomatic notes. In response to a question, Mayweather collects his thoughts and issues three or four sentences - a kind of small press release with very careful wording.

It often looks both boring and funny. Sometimes it's just boring. Trump or Hillary? Vote for whom you see fit. I have nothing against Hillary or against Trump. And I do not call for voting for any of them. But... did I, personally, see Hillary in my fights? No. But I saw Trump at my fight against Pacquiao. I saw him supporting me."

Luxury

— How many watches do you have, champion?

“Mmm, about 50,” Floyd replies, pointing to the diamond-encrusted ones he currently has on his hand. Mayweather bought them for $1.1 million. Leading Hollywood Unlocked restrained surprise. You don't see this every day.

Floyd's indicator of wealth is not only high earnings, but also the ability to spend large sums of money aimlessly. The champion is known for his craving for luxury on the verge of absurdity. For each haircut (Mayweather's hairstyle is a perfectly shaved skull), he pays $1,000. Usually the hairdresser visits him 3 times a week. “I don't wear underwear more than once. Yes, and boxers fit best when you put them on for the first time, ”Floyd is clearly one of those who do not think that things should be broken in. The money, however, returns to him just as quickly: Mayweather posts examples of his successful bets on Instagram *. Of course, it would be more interesting to look at the unsuccessful ones. This is where Floyd raised $221,000 at a bet of $170,000:

Previously, no matter how basking Mayweather was, periods of enjoying life alternated with tough training camps before fights. The common phrase that boxing is “blood, sweat and tears” is an absolute axiom for Floyd. Among the boxers of his generation, you can find more talented ones. But no one had such a combination of natural data and discipline. Before the fight with Pakyo, the millionaire trained with injured hands, and when his lips were broken, he only called in new sparring partners. Floyd still looks like a man in great shape, but the difference between an active fighter and just a trained person is huge. Whether the lack of fighting has shaken the former balance between luxury and hard work is an open question. It is worth noting that for all his craving for expensive things, Mayweather is quite simple in his gastronomic habits. Floyd's favorite foods are Twizzlers, ramen noodles, and hot dogs with barbecue sauce. There is only one caveat - the chef must be ready to cook anything at any time of the day.

Comeback

"I haven't fought in a year, but I'm still the biggest name in boxing and MMA," says Mayweather. The champion does not lie or even exaggerate. He is regularly called to fight not only by boxers, but also by the main UFC stars Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor. At some point, not only Conor, but Floyd himself began to talk about the McGregor-Mayweather fight. The American even posted a poster of a possible fight on his Instagram*. It looked both like a joke and an attempt to calculate the public's interest in such a duel. Floyd later deleted the picture.

Floyd answers the question about his return to boxing in different ways. Sometimes he says that he has finally given up, that he has a too long career behind him. Sometimes - that he is ready to return, "if the right money is offered."

All boxers are tempted to come back and fight again. And it's not about the money. In the case of Floyd, he may be excited about the opportunity to set a new record with a 50th victory, or the opportunity to once again experience the incomparable sensation of entering the ring. Comeback talk is a game that tickles the nerves of any retired boxer. Floyd now has everything except a sense of danger and a real fight.

"I'm still retired": how Mayweather destroyed Nasukawa at the Rizin 14 tournament

American boxer Floyd Mayweather destroyed the Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa at the Rizin 14 tournament, knocking him out two minutes after the start of the fight. Previously, the American dropped his opponent into the ring three times. Prominent promoter Bob Arum stated that only "specific assholes" could watch this fight.

American boxer Floyd Mayweather quickly dealt with his opponent, Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa at the Rizin 14 tournament. He knocked him out just two minutes after the start of the fight. At the same time, the American previously dropped his opponent into the ring three times.

The exhibition match was held according to the rules of boxing, but was supposed to take much less time than a standard fight: only three rounds of three minutes were scheduled. As a result, everything turned out even faster: the fight itself was shorter than the performance of the athletes.

The fight began with the Japanese attempting to hit Mayweather, but they all failed. At some point, the American completely dropped his hands, removing all the protection, but even the absence of a block did not help Nasukawa inflict damage on a more stellar opponent.

At the same time, the American constantly mockingly smiled. About a minute after the start, Floyd got two powerful blows to the opponent's head. There is a feeling that he could have delivered them earlier, but decided to give his opponent some head start.

Mayweather's next dangerous attack consisted of two blows in a row: first, the American stunned his opponent with a left hook, and then hit hard in the liver.

Apparently, the Japanese could not move away from this deuce until the end of the battle, because already seven seconds after that hit, the American sent Nasukawa to the first knockdown, hitting his opponent on the head twice. True, to the credit of the kickboxer, he was able to get up quite quickly.

And Mayweather continued to attack, and the second knockdown was not long in coming: it all happened about 30 seconds after the first. First, the American hit Tenshin in the abdomen, and then dealt a strong blow to the head, sending the opponent into the ring. It seemed that the fight was close to the end, but the stubborn Japanese still managed to get up a second time.

The next knockdown also happened fairly quickly. Mayweather got the opponent with a left hook and powerfully hit the forehead. As a result, Nasukawa, staggering slightly, was able to get up this time before the end of the ten-second countdown, but the judges decided to stop the fight.

So we can say that technically Mayweather defeated his opponent by technical knockout. After the fight was stopped, the Japanese could not hold back his tears, although this confrontation was not of an official nature.

So far, the Japanese kickboxer in terms of achievements, of course, cannot be compared with Mayweather, but in professional fights he is currently undefeated. Nasukawa won all 27 career bouts, 20 of which were by knockout.

In December 2016, he knocked out the experienced Thai Saenchai Vanchalong, and in the next fight in the same style he dealt with another famous Thai athlete Amnat Ruenroeng. Nasukawa has been with Rizin since 2017.

As for Mayweather's achievements, he is the world boxing champion in five weight classes with a record of 50 wins and zero losses.

After his triumph over the Japanese, the American said that his duel with Nasukawa should not be taken as a full return to the sport. Mayweather said this at a press conference at the end of the RIZIN 14 tournament. Recall that this fight will not be included in the official statistics of athletes.

“We are both still undefeated. Tenshin is a great champion and a great fighter. I am still retired and have no intention of returning to boxing. I came back to entertain the Japanese”,

— quotes Floyd NESN.

Also note that prior to the fight, Mayweather revealed that he would receive $9 million for an exhibition fight against Nasukawa.

“If you were offered 9 million for a nine-minute sparring session in Tokyo, would you take it? For me, this is a nine-minute walk, ”Floyd wrote on his Instagram.

Also before the fight between Mayweather and the Japanese kickboxer, boxing promoter Bob Arum spoke on his topic. In his opinion, only fools could watch a fight between two athletes.

“Mayweather vs. Nasukawa? Is this a joke? I think it's a joke. Because it's not a real fight. People who watch this are real assholes.

Floyd needs money for Christmas and New Year, and this is a good way to make money, ”Boxing Scene quotes Arum.

Let us also remind you that before the fight, Nasukawa promised the people of Japan to destroy Mayweather.
