How much air to put in tires nissan sentra

Nissan Sentra Tire Pressure | GetJerry.com

If you drive a Nissan Sentra, it’s recommended that you fill your front and rear tires with 33 pounds per square inch (PSI) of air.

Just like getting a routine

brake and suspension inspection

, regularly checking and maintaining your car’s recommended tire pressure is essential to safe driving. If your tires are not filled properly, it can not only turn your car into a gas guzzler, but negatively impact your ability to steer and up the risk of a blowout.

To help avoid these and keep you driving safely,

Jerry

has rounded up all the info you need to know about your Nissan Sentra’s tire pressure. We’ll go over how much you need, how to check your tire pressure, how to reset your tire pressure monitoring system, and even give you our best tips on how to use our

What is the right tire pressure for a Nissan Sentra?

For most model years and trims of the Nissan Sentra, it’s recommended that both front and rear tires have 33 psi of air. If you’re not sure or would like to double-check how much air your Sentra needs, you look it up in your owner’s manual or on the sticker on the driver’s side door jamb.

That said, some Sentras need different amounts of air in their tires depending on the model year and trim level. For example, Nissan Sentras with model years from 2013 to 2016 require 33 psi in the front tires, but 33 to 38 psi in the rear tires. If you drive the more fuel-efficient Nissan Sentra FE or the

Nissan Sentra S

, you’ll need 36 to 38 psi in both the front and rear tires .

The perfect amount of tire pressure also depends on the time of year. In the winter, tire pressure generally drops 1 psi per 10°F temperature decrease, so it’s recommended you fill your tires with 3 to 5 psi more air than you usually would.

How to check Nissan Sentra tire pressure

Now that you’ve got a solid grasp on how much tire pressure your Sentra needs, how are you supposed to check to ensure it’s at the right level? If you drive a newer Sentra with an infotainment screen, you can verify your tire pressure from your driver’s seat. Simply pull up the tire pressure screen on your Sentra’s digital display screen.

If your Sentra is older and without a fancy display screen, you’ll have to grab a handy dandy

tire pressure gauge

to check the air levels. To use it, you’ll need to remove the valve stem cap on each tire and push the tire pressure gauge onto the valve stem. The gauge will give you a reading letting you know how much air is in each of your tires. If you don’t already own a tire pressure gauge (which we’d recommend keeping in your glove compartment), you can check your tire pressure at your gas station’s air filling station.

When your car is truly low on tire pressure, it won’t be shy about letting you know. A bumpier ride, clunky steering, and overall decreased vehicle performance are all telltale signs that you should check your tire pressure.

How often should you check tire pressure?

We’d recommend that you check your tire pressure once a month. Or, if you have a

road trip

coming up, it’s wise to check your tire pressure before you hit the road.

How to tell if your Nissan needs new tires

You should swap out your Nissan Sentra’s tires once every six years. But, if you spot any low tread depth or cracks and bulges in your tires, it may be time to get new tires a little ahead of schedule.

Checking tread depth is easier than it sounds–all you need is a penny! Stick the coin Lincoln’s-head-first into the tire thread. If you can see the top of Abe’s head, that means that you need new tires.

How to reset the Nissan Sentra tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light

Getting in your car and seeing a lit-up

dashboard light

is never ideal. But, even if your tire pressure monitoring system (TPSM) clicks off, you refill your tires, and the light still won’t turn off, you’ll need to

reset the tire pressure monitoring system

Before you try anything else, try driving for about 10 minutes at 50 mph or above. After doing this, turn your car off and back on again, and the tire pressure monitoring system should reset itself.

If that didn’t do the trick, turn the key of your Sentra to the on position, but don’t start the car (this is known as putting your car in accessory mode). Then locate the tire pressure reset button underneath the steering wheel. Press and hold the button until the tire pressure light blinks three times, then release. The next time you start up your car, wait 20 minutes for the sensors to recalibrate.

If neither method does the trick, it may be time to take your Nissan to a mechanic to diagnose the issue properly.

How to save on Nissan Sentra insurance

Nissan Sentra Owners Manual: Tire pressure - Wheels and tires

Nissan Sentra Owners Manual / Maintenance and do-it-yourself / Wheels and tires / Tire pressure

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

This vehicle is equipped with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). It monitors tire pressure of all tires except the spare. When the low tire pressure warning light is lit and the CHECK TIRE PRES warning is displayed in the odometer, one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated.

The TPMS will activate only when the vehicle is driven at speeds above 16 MPH (25 km/h). Also, this system may not detect a sudden drop in tire pressure (for example a flat tire while driving).

For more details, refer to “Low tire pressure warning light” in the “Instruments and controls” section, “Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)” in the “Starting and driving” section, and “Flat tire” in the “In case of emergency” section.

Tire inflation pressure

Check the tire pressures (including the spare) often and always prior to long distance trips. The recommended tire pressure specifications are shown on the F.M.V.S.S./C.M.V.S.S. certification label or the Tire and Loading Information label under the “Cold Tire Pressure” heading.

The Tire and Loading Information label is affixed to the driver side center pillar. Tire pressures should be checked regularly because:

  • Most tires naturally lose air over time.
  • Tires can lose air suddenly when driven over potholes or other objects or if the vehicle strikes a curb while parking.

The tire pressures should be checked when the tires are cold. The tires are considered COLD after the vehicle has been parked for 3 or more hours, or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) at moderate speeds.

The “TPMS with Easy Fill Tire Alert” provides visual and audible signals outside the vehicle for inflating tires to the recommended COLD tire pressure. For more information, see “TPMS with Easy Fill Tire Alert” in the “Starting and driving” section.

Incorrect tire pressure, including under inflation, may adversely affect tire life and vehicle handling.

WARNING
  • Improperly inflated tires can fail suddenly and cause an accident.
  • The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is located on the F. M.V.S.S./C.M.V.S.S. certification label. The vehicle weight capacity is indicated on the Tire and Loading Information label. Do not load your vehicle beyond this capacity. Overloading your vehicle may result in reduced tire life, unsafe operating conditions due to premature tire failure, or unfavorable handling characteristics and could also lead to a serious accident. Loading beyond the specified capacity may also result in failure of other vehicle components.
  • Before taking a long trip, or whenever you heavily load your vehicle, use a tire pressure gauge to ensure that the tire pressures are at the specified level.
  • For additional information regarding tires, refer to “Important Tire Safety Information” (US) or “Tire Safety Information” (Canada) in the Warranty Information Booklet.

Tire and loading information label

  1. Seating capacity: The maximum number of occupants that can be seated in the vehicle.
  2. Vehicle load limit: See “Vehicle loading information” in the “Technical and consumer information” section.
  3. Original tire size: The size of the tires originally installed on the vehicle at the factory.
  4. Cold tire pressure: Inflate the tires to this pressure when the tires are cold.

Tires are considered COLD after the vehicle has been parked for 3 or more hours, or driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) at moderate speeds. The recommended cold tire inflation is set by the manufacturer to provide the best balance of tire wear, vehicle handling, driveability, tire noise, etc., up to the vehicle’s GVWR.

  5. Tire size – refer to “Tire labeling” in this section.
  6. Spare tire size.

Checking tire pressure

  1. Remove the valve stem cap from the tire.
  2. Press the pressure gauge squarely onto the valve stem. Do not press too hard or force the valve stem sideways, or air will escape. If the hissing sound of air escaping from the tire is heard while checking the pressure, reposition the gauge to eliminate this leakage.
  3. Remove the gauge.
  4. Read the tire pressure on the gauge stem and compare to the specification shown on the Tire and Loading Information label.
  5. Add air to the tire as needed. If too much air is added, press the core of the valve stem briefly with the tip of the gauge stem to release pressure.

Recheck the pressure and add or release air as needed.

  6. Install the valve stem cap
  7. Check the pressure of all other tires, including the spare.
