For re-studding, repair spikes manufactured by Tekom LLC are used. The stud is installed in the hole from which the stud came out with the help of a pneumatic stud gun.
Improving the properties of holding the spike in the socket is carried out due to the increased flange ("anchor") and the diameter of the body. Native rubber at the tire attachment point fits snugly around the spike, allowing you to hold tight in the tread.
The repair spike itself is a steel body with a sleeve made of a special polymer pressed onto it, which has a similar wear resistance coefficient with steel. This achieves a low weight of the stud and a strong attachment to the tread rubber.
Benefits of re-studded tires
Re-studding doubles the life of a studded tire. After pressing and running in, the retention force of the repair spike in the tread rubber is comparable to the spikes of a new tire!
Repair stud hook - same as round core studs.
The process is similar to studding a new tire at the factory. The stud is installed in the same hole and does not disturb the structure of the tire.
Recommendations for replacing studs:
- losses from 1 or more studs;
- gap around the spike;
- the tenon easily bends or sinks into the hole.
Studding procedure:
1. Measure tread depth and wear. Minimum residual depth 7 mm. The tire is not older than 5 years. Has original factory studding.
2. The number of spikes to be installed or replaced is displayed.
3. Worn studs are removed
4. Repair studs are pressed in with a special pneumatic gun
carbide core only, approx. 0.5 mm]
Break-in after re-studding
After studding, as with new tires, the studs must be run-in. For the next 500 km, it is recommended to slow down and accelerate smoothly, do not make sudden lane changes. Recommended speed up to 80 km/h. Otherwise, you can lose the repair spike and the procedure will have to be repeated.
Differences of the repair stud from the factory one:
- around the metal body of the stud - sleeve - for fixing in a worn hole;
- diameter of the flange (anchor) - larger - for improved fastening.
Why do spikes fall out?
Timely replacement of studs can almost double the useful life of winter tires.
If we compare the cost of replacing studs with the cost of new winter tires, the economic feasibility of this operation will also become clear. The main thing is to pay attention to the condition of your car tires in time.
