ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) and UTVs (Utility Terrain Vehicles) offer a ton of fun and easy mobility. Whether you’re cruising through backwoods trails or the open desert, there’s a sense of freedom and excitement that comes when driving these off-road vehicles. You might be planning an excursion to another state or across the country but don’t know exactly how to ship your four-wheeler. Caravan Auto Transport breaks down the cost of shipping an ATV, as well as how shipping one works.
Mule, side-by-side, UTV, ATV… whatever your flavor of recreational vehicle, it’s always a blast riding one of these in the open air. There are so many amazing off-roading spots to explore in the United States, from Utah’s Moab to Ocala National Forest in Florida to California’s Imperial Sand Dunes. But what if you can’t transport it yourself?
Shipping your ATV is akin to transporting a car. It requires ample time, effort, and skill to get it safely & securely from point A to B. Now, if you’re on this page, it’s safe to assume you either are weighing the decision between hauling it yourself versus a professional service, or you’re ready to have it transported but don’t know the logistics involved with doing so.
Of course, you need to know how much it will be. Generally speaking, delivery of a four-wheeler costs approximately $100 to $300 for shorter distances and $300 to $500 for longer distances. These are averages, however, so keep in mind that the price can vary, especially when it comes to location, distance, and shipping date. Since these vehicles are smaller and lighter than standard passenger cars, you get to save quite a bit in comparison.
As with standard vehicles, it can be cheaper to transport during off-peak months. Summer (as well as parts of springtime) is a high volume season, and so there is less availability, which translates to higher rates. If you’re not on a super tight schedule, or you can coordinate your ATV delivery with a house move, you can enjoy savings by booking during winter and fall.
Google “shipping an ATV,” and you’ll be inundated with an endless list of potential carriers. How are you supposed to find a reliable company? You could ask for advice from a friend, family member, or co-worker, or you could take the risk of choosing one in the dark. Caravan takes all the confusion out of the process. We provide free estimates from top auto transport companies with ease. All you have to do is request, compare, and book. It’s that easy!

Silver Glen Springs Recreation AreaOkay, so now that you understand the cost of shipping an ATV or UTV, let’s check out how the actual process works.
First, there are three main ways that transporters ship ATVs, UTVs, and the like.
A huge factor in shipping (and cost) is weight. Keep in mind that not only the weight of your ATV affects the rate, but also the weight of a pallet or crate. You’ll want to know exactly how your shipper of choice plans to haul it.
To ensure delivery free of drama, it pays to prep your recreational vehicle. Here are the steps to do so prior to loading it for its new destination.
You might be thinking, well, it’s going to get dirty anyway. But it helps to know the condition of your ATV. Any damage could be hidden, and if you need to file an insurance claim, it helps to know the current condition (more on that below).
Insurance does not cover the damage or loss of personal items stowed in your vehicle. If you have anything of personal or material value in the ATV, it’s recommended to take it all out before shipping.
Once you’ve washed your ATV or UTV, examine it for any straps, dents or other types of damage. Take ample photos of your vehicle. This will come in handy if there’s an issue down the road.
Along with images, create a written record of the current condition of your ATV. Make sure your carrier makes an official note. This will ensure a headache-free experience in the case of an insurance claim.
Make sure headlights and taillights are functioning properly, as well as the engine and suspension. Check battery, tire pressure, and fluids. Perform any necessary maintenance to ensure proper performance.
Whether you’re heading to a new trail spot or selling your recreational ride, you’ll need to provide proper documentation of ownership or transfer of ownership to the auto transport company.

Dimensional weight is the density of the cargo based on the addition of the dimensions of an object, regardless of its shape and its actual weight. An object of lesser density will take up more volume for the same weight as a denser object. Example: You have a ton of cotton that takes up all the space in your barn. You crush it and pack it in a bale. In a bale, cotton will take up less space in size, but the weight will remain the same.
Air Freight Density Calculator, based on volumetric weight, also known as volumetric weight.
Air freight always charges per kilogram or pound, whether actual weight or dimensional weight.
Now that you have the density of your package, you can easily determine which class it belongs to.
The cargo class is defined by a special cargo classification code and has four characteristics of the cargo being classified.
If you plan to ship FCL (Full Container Load), weight is usually not included in the cost calculation. As long as your shipment is within the weight limit, then the FCL freight charge will depend on the shipping method and route of your shipment.
However, for smaller shipments, weight can be an important factor in calculating shipping costs.
Weight of cargo in sea transportation
If you are shipping an LCL container (less than a full container load) by sea, the freight forwarder will calculate the weight of the cargo ("weight") and the cubic volume of the cargo ("measure"). They will be compared on the basis that 1CBM = 1000 kg and the larger of the two will be multiplied by the shipper's rate per kg.
For example:
Good to know how your shipment is valued. This may affect how it is packaged for shipping. For example, if your shipment is calculated by weight instead of volume, you can pack it to take up more space and be better protected during transit. As long as the weight of the shipment remains the same (and remains higher than the volumetric weight), the shipping cost should not change.
Cargo weight in road delivery
As in the case of sea transport, when you deliver goods by road. The shipper will use to calculate the cost from the actual weight and volumetric weight. However, there are some differences.
For road transport, the volume (m3) is multiplied by a standard multiple - usually 333 kg - to create a volumetric weight. The cost is then calculated on a fixed rate sliding scale and will depend on which fare category the higher actual weight and dimensional weight falls into.
For example:
The only exception to this rule is if you are shipping items that cannot be stacked, such as something bulky or too heavy to stack on top of another shipment. In this case, you will be charged as if your load were to occupy the space above it, using your main pallet dimensions and the standard trailer dimensions to calculate your load's "capacity" in kg.
Air freight weight
Air freight, like everyone else, uses weight and volume to calculate shipping costs. But, as you probably already understood, nothing is easier when it comes to the cost of freight! If you are shipping by air, the standard division factor of 6000 will also come into play.
For example:
To further complicate matters, some carriers deviate from the standard dividing factor of 6000 - often using 5000 instead.
If reading this article gives you a headache, you might not enjoy the prospect of calculating and comparing different costing methods yourself. Rosimport will help make your life much easier. Our customer service agents are experts in all shipping matters and will be happy to calculate the cost of shipping your shipment in a variety of ways so you can make an informed decision - no headaches - or a calculator!
There are 18 classes of goods: from 50 to 500. Starting from class 50, these are heavy but compact items that are the least expensive to transport. Further, items become less dense and more prone to damage, making them more expensive to transport.
Cargo class | Load density (pounds per cubic foot) |
---|---|
50 | Over 50 |
55 | 35 - 50 |
60 | 30 - 35 |
65 | 22.5 - 30 |
70 | 15 - 22.5 |
77.5 | 13.5 - 15 |
85 | 12 - 13.5 |
92. 5 | 10.5 - 12 |
100 | 9 - 10.5 |
110 | 8 - 9 |
125 | 7 - 8 |
150 | 6 - 7 |
175 | 5 - 6 |
200 | 4 - 5 |
250 | 3 - 4 |
300 | 2 - 3 |
400 | 1 - 2 |
500 | Less than 1 |
In order to standardize pricing and not scare customers with wildly different freight rates, associations of different countries of road freight traffic create classes of goods transported by road
Different goods have a different combination of these four factors and NMFC codes divide them into 18 classes, numbered from 50 to 500.
In the table below you will see examples of goods that are commonly found in each class.

New The regulation allowed to significantly reduce the cost of cars imported into Ukraine from the European Union. Thus, the dream of many of our motorists - to have a "new-old" car of a prestigious brand in their garage has come true. But what about those who prefer American cars? Like Chrysler, Dodge or Ford? The reduction in excise applies to these cars, the main thing is to transport them across the ocean without any problems.
Is it worth it for an ordinary motorist to personally deal with cargo clearance in the port and delivery of a car on board a vessel? To answer this question reasonably, Mega-Auto specialists have prepared a special overview description of the procedures that will have to be addressed during transportation. Looking ahead, let's say that with our help everything will be cheaper and faster, and here's why ....
Schemes for delivering a car from the USA
When making delivery, you need to take into account the fact that the transportation of equipment from the USA by water is associated with certain customs security issues. Any vehicle: passenger car, heavy trailer, bikes, scooters and ATVs fall into the motor vehicles category and must have a DMV registration. Everything related to their movement from America to other countries by sea requires special knowledge and professional skills.
There are two ways to deliver the desired car from the US to Ukraine by cargo ship.
Transportation of small vehicles: motorcycles, mopeds, jet skis, ATVs from the USA by sea freight is not considered a freight unless it falls under the LCL category. Less than Container Load (LCL) is an economical way to move combined (consolidated) cargo from 1 m³ or 1 ton as part of a LCL. The restriction is established by the rule of the International Customs Regulations of the North American States. LCL sea freight is only available for auto parts.
Documentary
An ocean freight vehicle is required by United States Customs to be accompanied by three uncertified copies of the bill of lading. It indicates the name of the car and a photo of its foreground and background. Documents accompany the car to the port or container terminal. The US Customs Service checks the TS against all existing bases in case of theft or bank collateral, and only after that it gives permission for export from the country.
The owner of the car does not have to accompany it to the point of departure. In this case, he transfers his powers to another person or company that will represent him before customs. This could be an international freight forwarding company or an ocean freight forwarding agency. Their rights are confirmed by a notarized power of attorney.
The same package of documents must be handed over to the consignee. Why is it important? This is to avoid additional charges after clearing US customs. The bill of lading for the car must be presented at the destination, and an invoice is also needed if the car was sold and sent to the owner - these documents will be required by the customs office of the destination. Lack of forwarded appropriate transport documents for the goods leads to unnecessary costs.
If the vehicle is shipped by container, its doors will not be sealed until the vehicle has been inspected by US Customs and verified by the vehicle's VIN. Access to the machine must be provided without fail. The VIN is usually located on the left side of the windshield. In the absence of a sign or access to it, the cargo may be prohibited for international sea transportation, and the loaded freight container may be returned for reloading. To avoid this, it is recommended to hire trusted freight companies.
Safety and freight carrier regulations when transporting vehicles from the US
Transportation by sea container
One of the main requirements when transporting machines in a container is the absence of liquids. Even evaporation in the gas tank should be absent. The battery must be disconnected and its cable removed.
Keys must not be in the ignition lock. It is forbidden to carry any cargo in the cabin or use the free space of the car for sea transportation. If you need to transport something else with the machine, it is recommended to use LCL (sea freight). The general delivery of the car and parts to it causes problems with US customs. In the event that transportation in the cabin or trunk is still necessary, the vehicle number (VIN) must not be blocked so that the customs officer can check for compliance without interference.
Rates for the transportation of cars from the USA when using sea freight
There are no standards in the formation of sea freight rates of the International Ro-Ro system. The cost of shipping a car from the USA depends on the type of vessel and the rates of a specific Ro-Ro carrier.
Ocean freight rate depends on vehicle size. Ro-Ro ships have a variety of platforms for transporting small cars or heavy trailers. The cost of transportation is calculated based on the type and volume that the machine occupies. Volume can be calculated in cubic feet CBF or cubic meters CBM. Measurements are provided by the shipper.
US ocean freight rates are exceptions to this rule. Ro-Ro freight rates for exported vehicles depend on the make, model and year of the vehicle and are based on the total volume of the vehicle. Ro-Ro carriers use special rate matrices, which are created on the basis of information about a particular model of cars exported from the United States. For example, a vehicle up to 600 cubic feet gross and up to 1. 6m high would be $1,300 at a time, plus BAF and CAF surcharges.
Please note that delivery to Ukraine from the USA will be evaluated in the standard in SSL (Steam Ship Line) direct international shipping company. In the event that the dimensions of the cargo differ from the dimensions specified by the shipper at the time of registration of the international Ro-Ro shipment, then additional costs will be added to the total cost of delivery. The transportation fee will be calculated from the car's total volume in CBF or CBM multiplied by the CBF or CBM rate according to the type of vehicle.
Shipping rates for cars from the USA depending on the method of container transportation
The freight forwarder or person acting on behalf of the shipper arranges for the delivery of the machine to the freight company, along with supporting documents. This company supervises customs clearance and prepares the car for loading. After that, the documents are returned to the sender or forwarded to the unloading terminal or directly to the recipient.
Sea container can fit up to 4 cars, but usually two or three cars are transported at the same time. For the transportation of antique cars, exclusive models or very expensive cars, a separate 20-foot sea container is used.
