A night at the train station: recommendations for the economical traveler

Traveling, we are constantly faced with the need to spend the night at the train station. It is necessary not only to somehow spend this night, but also to sleep well and not suffer from thirst, hunger and other needs. In this article, we will tell you how to spend the night as comfortably as possible, even if you have little or no money.

First of all, you need to decide whether you want to spend this night completely free of charge or simply cheaper than in a hotel. The comfort of such a night depends on the answer and the budget. nine0007 There are 3 ways to spend the night at the station with different prices up to its complete absence:
1) Night in the lounge at the station
2) Night in the lounge
3) Night in the waiting room
Let's look at everything in order.

Night in the lounge at the station

The lounge is a service for accommodation in 1-6-bed rooms, in fact in a hostel located in the station building. The minimum set in such rooms is a bed, a bedside table for things, one closet per room, a shared toilet. More expensive rooms have TVs, refrigerators, kitchen tables, beautiful interiors, Wi-Fi and other pleasures of life. Most often, a shower is paid, but you can ask for a kettle with boiling water for free. Lounges are available only at major stations. nine0003

You can check in to the rest rooms at any time for half a day or the whole day. Often there is a cunning system that you cannot rent a room for exactly 24 hours, it is believed that each tenant must be evicted at 12 noon.
Let's look at their system with an example. For example, you arrived at the station at 19 pm, and your train will depart the next day from 16 pm. In appearance, everything is simple, you need to rent a room for a day. But at the station there is a system according to which each tenant must vacate the room at 12 noon. It turns out that you pay for the room as for the whole day to spend the night from 7 pm to 12 noon. Then you extend the rent of the room for half a day, so that you have a room at your disposal from 12 noon to 4 pm. nine0007 It is inconvenient, but such a system operates at most stations. You have to get used to it. For example, spend the time from 12 noon until boarding the train in the waiting room of the station or check into the rest room at midnight to save on renting a room.
At some stations, you can rent a room for only 6 hours - back to back, but this time is enough to comfortably spend the coldest and darkest hours of the night. Usually a 6 hour room rent can be converted into an 8-9 hour room rent. How does this happen? The change of employees of the break room takes place at 9in the morning (it may be different at different stations). That is, from the moment of check-in to check-out, you will encounter the same person with whom you can negotiate. You need to stipulate the conditions under which you can take a room instead of 6 hours, a couple of hours longer before her shift change. You need to discuss such things quietly, secretly, so that the watchman pretends that she is doing you a big favor and, in general, does this for the first time in her life. As a rule, she already has a prepared price tag for renting a room for a couple of extra hours. Although sometimes employees help to sleep for more than 6 hours due to their good spiritual qualities for free. According to observations, watchmen can show true concern for students and very young girls. nine0003

How can you make the most of your time in the break room?

You need not only to sleep, but also to wash, wash, eat, and, if necessary, take water for the journey.
The water temperature is regulated in the restroom toilets. Even if the use of the shower is paid, you can wash yourself in the toilet over the sink or toilet. For convenience, take a bottle or a mug, a towel or something replacing it with you. Check if the water is turned off at this station at night. nine0007 Ask the janitor for boiling water, you can use it to make tea, cook instant food. Sometimes tourists in a rented room cook any other food on a camping stove (make sure fire detectors are installed).
After checking out of the room, you can ask the watchman to leave your luggage with her until the shift change. The watchman can agree to store things for free, which is very profitable, because at the station, luggage storage is paid. Prices for luggage storage can be so high that it is more profitable for a group to rent one cheap room to organize things while walking around the city. nine0003

Overnight in the Lounge

The Lounge is a place for comfortable pastime of passengers waiting for a train or plane. This hall is only at major stations.
For people with expensive tickets (Business Class or CB), the use of this lounge is free for at least a few hours. Any other mortal can get into the luxury lounge for money. Payment is hourly, although sometimes more pleasant price tags are set for 3-6 hours of uninterrupted stay in the hall. At airports, the cost of staying in the hall is much more expensive than at railway stations. nine0003

The Superior Lounge is designed not for sleeping, but for simple relaxation. There are comfortable chairs, sofas, tables, nice interior and Wi-Fi, often there are free sockets and TVs. The hall is much quieter and calmer than in other areas of the station. But there are also disadvantages: no one turns off the light, the TV can work all night, and the sound from it does not go through the headphones, but so that everyone can hear. At railway stations, the area for the disabled can be right in the comfort hall. That is, by paying money, you will find yourself in the neighborhood with those who usually beg on the street and smell fragrant. However, in the superior lounge, you can lie down comfortably and have a good night's sleep during the allotted hours. The key to a comfortable sleep in this room is a blindfold to dim the light. nine0007 In the superior room, where the price tag is set for 3-6 hours of stay, you can agree on a price for the number of hours you need. The principle is the same as with the rest room. You need to agree on how much the watchman will take for your rest before her shift change.
Typically, 6 hours of sleep in a luxury lounge is about the price of a break in a lounge. But if all the seats in the lounge are occupied, the seats in the superior lounge, as a rule, are free.

Night in the waiting room

There are many ways to sleep at the station. You can sleep sitting, lying down, burying your head in a backpack, on a bench or under a bench. Here is just one "but". With the previous points (a night in a rest room or in a superior room), everything is simple: if there are such rooms or halls, then it will be possible to rest in them at night. There is a waiting room at every station, but not every station is open at night. Therefore, first of all, you need to decide at which station you can spend the night. nine0007 Through the Internet, you can find information about the operating hours of the station you need, first of all, pay attention to the website of the station itself. It may contain information that sleeping on the territory of the station is prohibited by the administration. Although this does not mean at all that it will not be possible to spend the night at the station, nevertheless such information will be useful.

For airports there is a collection of information - sleepinginairports.net. The site is in English, but with the help of a translator you can catch the essence. It contains information about the operating hours of a particular airport, the suitability of the airport for sleeping and the best places in the airport to sleep, reviews of real people, information about the presence or absence of Wi-Fi and more. Please note that a particular terminal may not work at night, and not all. nine0007 In many cities, different stations (railway, bus, airport) are close to each other. Bus stations are more often than others closed at night, so it is better to spend the night at a nearby station, of which you are not a passenger. You can choose between stations by virtue of convenience: where there is a free toilet, chairs are more comfortable. For example, at airports there is a free toilet and its employees are less picky about sleeping people than at a railway station.

If you spend the night at the station, you may well be awakened in the middle of the night by the security service, who will ask you to explain the reason for being in the waiting room at this time. If no reason is found, you will be asked to leave the waiting room. The most reliable reason for being at the station at night is the presence of a ticket for the morning or night flight. A ticket confirming that you arrived at this station late in the evening or at night is also suitable. nine0003

What if you don't have tickets?

In general, security officers do not always check passengers for tickets. At many stations, if you are sober and not homeless, they do not show any interest in you. And you can spend the whole night in the waiting room without worries. But you should not hope that you will not be checked. For reliability, you can buy the cheapest ticket for literally one station for a train or bus departing from this station. At the train station, you can buy a ticket for the early morning diesel. nine0007 In addition, you can find or ask for a ticket from a passenger who disembarked from transport late in the evening or at night.
More tricky combinations for sleeping at the station can be made by studying the train schedule and the ticket office's opening hours. Often the ticket office, unlike the station itself, closes at night and opens an hour before the first train leaves. Therefore, if security or the police approach you, you can say that you are taking such and such a train, but you have not bought tickets yet, because the ticket office will open in 3 hours. There will be nothing to object to the guards. nine0007 A less reliable option is to say that you are meeting a passenger arriving at, say, 4 am. It’s worth it to play it safe, look for free accommodation options on couchsurfing.org, find cheap station hostels and hotels via the Internet. If the sleeping conditions at the train station don't satisfy you, there must be escape routes.

Now the bare minimum you have to sleep in is the office waiting room and a reason (not necessarily a real one) to be there. This set wouldn't be complete without a place to sleep. nine0007 Upon arrival at the station, examine all its premises, floors and terminals. You need to notice the most secluded places, away from traffic, doors and drafts, with subdued lights, with comfortable benches or free space on the floor. If the most successful places are occupied, take a closer look at the behavior of its inhabitants, perhaps they are already preparing for the start of landing and will soon leave this place. It is not superfluous to inquire if these passengers are awake when their flight is. If a good place becomes free soon, you can be the first to take it. nine0003

The key to choosing a good place to sleep is to arrive at the station earlier than others. Less people - more chances to find the best place. At 10 pm it is quite possible that in general all the places will be occupied.
Ideal for sleeping lying down. To do this, you need to find benches without armrests, with folding ones or with armrests so large that you can crawl under them. At empty stations, you can move the benches to make a place more comfortable for yourself.
If you have mats and a sleeping bag with you, you can sit under the benches on the floor or in any free space. Even if you spend the night on benches, we strongly recommend that you lay a tourist rug under you. From the metal elements of the benches it pulls strongly. nine0007 A comfortable sleep is guaranteed by a blindfold, because the light at the station is not dimmed enough. Some may find it more comfortable to sleep in earplugs, while others may want to bring an inflatable neck pillow with them.
Any passenger needs to prepare for an overnight stay at the station - to warm up as much as possible. Even if it seems to you that it is summer and warm, you can die at the train station at night. You can sleep well only in warmth. It’s better to get a little fried at first than to try to keep warm for a long time in the middle of the night, warming up.

Sleep is the most important activity for anyone stuck at the train station at night. But travelers still have many other needs and views of the station. For example, eat, quench your thirst, wash, wash, and, elementarily, go to the toilet.
Everything is simple at the airport - always free toilets. With railway stations it is more difficult.

  • In Belarus, paid toilets,
  • According to Ukrainian rules, there should be a free toilet near the station (although it does not always work),
  • in Russia - toilets are paid, and you can visit them for free 2 hours before the departure of the train for which you have a ticket or 1 hour after its arrival (at the entrance to the paid toilet you need to show a ticket for free access).
  • During a long stay at the station, one visit to the toilet can go bankrupt, because the price tag is not always adequate for such an ordinary service. Of course, using the cover of night, you can move away from the territory of the station and find a secluded place for your needs. A more attractive option is to go to a paid toilet, but use it as productively as possible. nine0007 Going to the toilet for a budget traveler is an opportunity to get water for free, wash and wash, and also wash dishes after eating. Of course, this option is not suitable for everyone, but it completely satisfies hikers.

Free water at the train station. Meals at the station.

Station toilets have potable water and meet sanitary standards. If for some reason the water is not potable, a sticker is required to notify of this. In such cases, free drinking water is usually found in the neighborhood. nine0007 Water, as in all this area, may not taste good, but it is suitable for drinking and cooking. Very often, water from the toilet is the only source of free water, because water in the shops near the railway station is expensive.

The toilet can be filled with bottled water. If you have a burner with you, you can go outside the station and cook food and tea on this water. Usually, if you are caught on the street with fire by security or police officers, they show no more interest than any other passerby. But it's better to find a quieter place. nine0007 What if you don't have a burner?
You can eat at the station in a cafe, but since the article is for travelers with a modest budget, then the cafe is not about you. Buying groceries in railway station shops is also not the best option, because in many countries and cities prices near the station are too high. It is better for economical people to buy food in fixed-price stores, hypermarkets or social stores (it says so on the sign), they are located a little further from the station. Suitable food for an overnight stay at the train station is snacks and instant foods (cereals, mashed potatoes, noodles). nine0003

You must be wondering where to get boiling water for a hot meal. There are several options:

  • Go to a cafe located on the territory of the station with a hot water tank and ask for boiling water. There can be several outcomes to your request:
    - you will be poured the required amount of boiling water for free
    - they will sell you boiling water for a small fee
    - they will refuse you, referring to CCTV cameras and a strict ban from the administration
If you were refused in one cafe, go to the next. nine0097
  • Check the train schedule at the railway station. The necessary information is the time of arrival and parking of trains. Go to the desired platform to the standing train and ask the conductor to collect boiling water in titanium. In most cases, conductors allow you to do this. You won’t be able to agree with one - there are a lot of cars on the train, and more than one train passes through the night, as a result, you won’t be left without boiling water. If this tactic is not successful, you can pretend to be a mourner, enter the train under this guise, and exit with the coveted boiling water. nine0097

Laundry and hygiene at the railway station

On long hikes and trips, tourists are often deprived of the opportunity to properly wash and wash their clothes. The station is a very convenient place to solve this problem.
There is usually a paid shower at the station. Using a shower is not the cheapest pleasure $ 3.5-10, in addition, you will have to pay separately for slates if you do not have them. You can look for other options, for example, use the services of the gym, which has a free shower for exercising. nine0003

If all the paid options with a shower are not for you, get ready to go to the toilet. You need to bring soap, toothpaste, a brush, a water bottle, a mug, dirty laundry and a towel (a replacement item of clothing), as well as clean clothes if you need to change.
Many toilets have prohibition signs stating that washing hair and the like is not allowed in the toilet. You should not pay attention to these signs, it is better to focus on studying the people in the toilet. If there are no station employees among them, you can safely wash, shave and do whatever you need over the washbasin. If you notice a janitor or a cleaning lady, it is better to transfer your bathroom procedures to a closed toilet cubicle. To do this, fill a bottle of water. To wash things, wait until the unfriendly people leave the wash area. nine0007 Very often people are embarrassed to wash their feet in the washbasin in front of strangers and wait long enough to be alone in the toilet. Do not be afraid of the attention of visitors to the toilet, most of them are going to do the same as you, they are just waiting for you and other people to come out.
Laundered items can be hung on the free backs of chairs or placed on a battery running inside the station building.

Train Station Leisure

If you get bored at the train station, look for free newspapers (you're more likely to find them at airports). You can go to newsstands and ask the seller for unwanted old newspapers and books. He can give them away for free or for a small fee. On the territory of the station there can be free reading "traveling books" - bookcrossing. Often there are TVs in the waiting rooms, you can join the broadcast through headphones. nine0003

Many stations have free Wi-Fi. Connection can occur automatically or after a verification procedure. One blogger created an interactive map of logins and passwords for free Wi-Fi at airports around the world. You can see the map at the link.

The station may be the last place on your journey where you can recharge your phone and other equipment. At some stations, sockets are open and free to use. On others, you need to look for sockets behind the seats and in other inconspicuous corners. There are stations where you can charge your phone only for a fee in a special box rented for an hour. If the entire territory of the station has been explored and no free sockets have been found, you can buy tea in a cafe and ask them to recharge your phone during tea drinking. For obvious reasons, you will drink tea for a very long time. nine0003

As you can see from the material of the article, you can spend time at the station for free and quite comfortably if you are not squeamish. Respect the people around you, their sleep and order.

Have a good rest and good staff of the station!

So, the trolleybus ticket offices are located in a two-story pink building, standing near the clock tower. From here you can go towards the southern coast of Crimea: to Perevalnoye, Alushta, Yalta. Electric transport runs from early morning until late evening, making stops in settlements along the way. However, as of today, due to road works, trolleybuses temporarily run from (and to) Moskovskaya Square. This is three stops from the station, where you can get, if there are no traffic jams, in just 5-10 minutes. However, this square will not always be the starting and ending points for the movement of the "horned" ones, but only until the completion of road works on Gagarin Street. After that, everyone will be able to easily go by trolleybus directly from the station to the Crimean journey. nine0003
