How to change a dolly tire

How to Replace the Wheels on a Moving Dolly

Cher-Ann0Home Improvement, How to, How to, Projects, Tools,

Our moving dolly (or hand truck) gets a regular workout. In fact, it used to belong to my dad and it’s very possible that it’s as old as I am! The tires on that bad boy have certainly been around the block. It was definitely time for new ones and I’ll show you how to replace the wheels on a moving dolly quickly and easily!

I found the tires to fit the dolly at Tractor Supply, and they were reasonably priced. It wasn’t until I got them installed on the dolly that I realized that the tires are a different size… Of course they are. The tires themselves are the same size but the depth of the shaft on the wheels are different. And you know what? I put them on anyway. So let’s get started…

Find New Wheels

The size should be listed on the side of the wheel. Make sure that the new one matches so that the wheels fit on the axle, and so that the shaft depth is correct. Learn from my mistake, and make sure BOTH tires are the same!

Remove the Old Wheels

The existing wheels are generally secured with a cotter pin through the axle. On my furniture dolly, there was a cotter pin on one side and a framing nail on the other. I guess the cotter pin fell out and my dad used the nail as  a substitute! The legs of the cotter pin will need to be straightened out so that the pin can be removed.

Once the pins are removed, take the wheels off of the axle. In my case, this was the hardest part. The axle did not want to let go of those tires! I wiggled one tire off, then had to pull the other tire and axle through the other side. I ended up using a rubber mallet to tap the tire off of the axle. This step was by far the longest part of the repair!

Install the New Wheels

Replace the axle and place one of the new tires on one side of the axle, securing in place with a hitch pin (<– affiliate link!). I’ll have to be honest, in that I really wasn’t sure what size cotter pin (<– affiliate link!) to buy so I bought hitch pins instead because I thought they might be easier to remove if I needed to do so.

Place the other tire on the opposite side, and add the pin to secure. Make sure the new tires don’t rub on the side of the dolly – thankfully, the shorter of the two tires on mine does not!

Another Option

I have another hand truck that I found by a dumpster. the previous owner actually broke the shaft on the tire. This dolly is the type where the handle can be removed and the dolly can be a flatbed type of had truck. I knew I could fix it!

I already had a couple of tires at home (to make an all-terrain dolly, ha ha!!) but the existing axle wasn’t quite long enough. I had a piece of all-thread that was the exact same diameter as the axle. I cut it a little over 1/2″ longer on each side so I could add a lock nut to hold the tires on. It worked really well! I need to clean the rust off of the new “axle” and I’ll probably grease it to protect it. And yes, everything is rusty because they’ve been outside.

Both projects were a WIN! I love it when that happens…

How to Replace a Flat Free Hand Truck Wheel

Sep 29, 2016

Our flat free hand truck wheels are manufactured utilizing micro cellular Polyurethane elastomers. These wheels perform just like pneumatic tires, without the hassle and expense of flats.

They are flexible, lightweight, and they compress and conform to road surfaces just like air-filled tires.

However, like any other product, flat free hand truck wheels undergo wear and tear after extended periods of use. With flat free polyurethane wheels, it is a good idea to replace the entire wheel.

This post discusses the steps for replacing flat-free hand truck tires.

Steps to Replace a Flat-free Hand Truck Wheel

The procedure that we have provided here involves replacing the wheel and the flat-free hand truck tire as a single unit. A hand truck wheel assembly can consist of either a cotter pin, or a lock washer. We will provide separate points for removing both components.

Assemble your Tools and Safety Equipment:

  1. The first thing you need to do is to get all the right tools and safety gear. Your tools will include:
    1. A table (or any stable surface)
    2. Pair of pliers
    3. Hammer
    4. Replacement lock washers (if required)
    5. Safety gear, which will include work gloves and goggles.

It is extremely important to keep the safety gear on at all times during the replacement procedure. They will ensure that you don’t get hurt while replacing the wheel.

  1. Prepare the Hand Truck:

Lift the hand truck and lay it down on the table or firm surface, with the wheels off the ground and facing you. Ensure that the truck’s handle, and the package spade are in the down positions. Make sure that the truck is secure, and will not move. Remove the axle end cap, if there is one in the assembly.

  1. Removing Pins or Lock Washers:
  • Removing the Cotter Pin:
  1. If your hand truck is designed with a cotter pin, first hold the assembly on the axle, then use the pliers to straighten the bent area to find the pin. Gently grip the pin end with the pliers. Maneuver the pin around and pull it out from the assembly. There will also be some flat washers around the axle, remove them before replacing the wheel.
  • Removing the Lock Washer:
  1. Lock washers are designed to grip onto the axle so that the wheel doesn’t come off. If your hand truck is designed with this component, you will need to use the pliers and the hammer. Place one side of the plier head against the washer, and hit the other side with hammer. Keep hitting the washer till it breaks, or gets damaged. Remove the washer, and then perform the next step.
  1. Replace the Wheel: Slowly slide the wheel out from the axle. Take the new wheel, and align its center hub hole with the axle. Push the wheel and tire assembly straight onto the axle, ensuring that it is flush against the truck’s frame.
  1. Replace the Pin/Lock Washer: Replace the flat washers, and then locate the cotter pin hole in the axle. Insert the cotter pin, and ensure that the end is resting against the axle. Bend the pin’s arms around the axle to secure the assembly. For lock washer designed assemblies, replace the old washer with a new one.

If you use the right tools and follow the instructions, the average DIYer can complete the wheel replacement process easily. This procedure can also be used if you are using custom flat-free hand truck tires. The best way to get the right wheel and tire is to approach the manufacturer of the actual hand truck or a flat-free hand truck wheel manufacturer. Either one can suggest the right product that will meet your needs.

We repair the wheel of a garden wheelbarrow

Often, spending very little time, you can avoid additional costs, which are already enough for those who spend the summer in the country and in country houses, taking care of buildings, gardens and gardens. In this particular case, the conversation, or rather, the video sequence, will be about how to bring the wheel of a garden cart back to life in a few minutes. A garden wheelbarrow in the country is never idle: take out the garbage, then bring building materials, then transport the crop. And, of course, with such intensive use, the wheel periodically fails: the tire is punctured, the chamber bursts, etc. But, before you go to the market and buy a new wheel, see how quickly you can disassemble the wheel, patch it, or, in case of significant damage, replace the tube and tire, and return everything to its original form. nine0003

We want you to see how easy it is to replace a punctured, cracked, or simply worn tube wheelbarrow wheel . Of course, we do this job every day, and we boarded several hundred thousand of these wheels before we decided to post this video. The video lasts only a couple of minutes, but by watching it and following the simple sequence of actions we perform, you will be spared unnecessary time costs.

Wheel mounted on garden wheelbarrow is typically 3.25-8, slightly smaller in diameter than wheelbarrow for construction wheelbarrow .

First you need to unscrew the spool and completely deflate the wheel to make it easier to remove the tube tire from the rim.

Then we insert the new tube into the tire, be sure to carefully spread it around the entire circumference inside the tire.

Once, on a video about the repair of a construction wheelbarrow wheel, we received a comment from a man in which he assured us that our inner tube with a tire was made of soft rubber, while his was made of oak and it was impossible to do what was shown in the video. So, if you carefully distribute the tube inside the tire before you put all this on the rim, any tire set, of course, if it is matched to the size of the rim, regardless of the softness of the rubber, will definitely fit on the rim. nine0003

If we don't do it with due diligence, then we won't put the kit on the disk. There is no need to watch how quickly the person in the video does this work, he does it all the time, just pay attention to how carefully the tire set is prepared before putting on the disk.

The next step is to insert the nipple into the hole on the disk and insert the pre-assembled tire kit with the inner chamber with force in a circle.

Inflate the wheel and close the nipple with a cap. That's it! nine0003

In the video, we use a compressor to inflate a tire, but it can be inflated almost as quickly with a conventional car pump. Everything else is done exclusively by hand and does not require any improvised means.

And in conclusion, once again I would like to draw your attention to the fact that if something does not work out for you, then this happens not because the rubber is “oak”, but because the sequence of actions is violated.
We often have to bead the wheels in winter, at minus 15. Knowing the properties of rubber, you can easily guess that any rubber will be “oak” at such a temperature, but we spend exactly the same amount of time as in this video. nine0003

Every gardener and summer resident constantly needs to transport cargo across the territory of the plot or garden. The need to transport fertilizers for feeding plants or building materials can arise at any time, so the purchase of a garden wheelbarrow is often required. Devices for transporting goods over short distances differ in many parameters: size, number of rollers, tire material, etc. And you need to pay attention to all this when choosing a wheelbarrow in a store. nine0003

What types of wheels are there?

The wheelbarrow for a garden wheelbarrow can be pneumatic (with a tire into which air is pumped), molded rubber and polyurethane. At the same time, the material of the disk is not so important, since it is the tire that is subjected to the maximum load during operation.

Wheelbarrow wheel

Pneumatic wheel

The rim for pneumatic wheels is based on a treaded tire. Inside, there is usually a chamber, which, for reliability, is made using two layers of rubber. Discs can be made of metal or polypropylene. If the manufacturer provides a bearing at the fixing point, then the trolley will move more smoothly. nine0003

Advantages:

  • Increased load capacity. This type of wheel can carry up to 300 kg depending on the size. This is convenient for frequent use.
  • Cross-country ability . With large wheels, you can move the trolley even on very uneven surfaces.
  • Virtually silent running . This is an important parameter. because during long-term transportation, noise can affect the human condition and lead to fatigue. nine0049
  • Smooth movement. Due to the softness of the tire and the presence of the bearing, you can smoothly move the load on any surface.

Pneumatic wheel

Solid rubber

Garden cart wheels with solid rubber are made of high quality materials. The disc is made from cast steel. Additionally, galvanizing is carried out, for reliability and protection against metal corrosion. Thanks to this, high reliability of the design, strength and durability are achieved, in addition, the design features of the connection allow you to quickly change the wheel. nine0003

Minus - sufficiently low load limit. It is impossible to load such a trolley with a mass exceeding 200 kg. In addition, when driving there is a slight shaking, so these carts are not suitable for transporting fragile goods.

Please note! Because the tread tire is molded, the wheelbarrow can be used on rough surfaces where pneumatic specimens deteriorate quickly.

Polyurethane foam

This material is an alternative to molded and pneumatic options. A polyurethane tire cannot be pierced, just like a cast one. At the same time, the smoothness of the ride and running characteristics are the same as for pneumatic wheelbarrows. Polyurethane is characterized by high depreciation properties, wear resistance, durability. No additional maintenance is required to maintain performance. nine0003

Benefits of polyurethane wheels:

  • Rust resistant, can work in environments that are unfavorable to metal.
  • Withstands both high and low temperatures.
  • Resistant to mechanical damage and puncture. Because of this, it is possible to work even in areas with a large amount of stones or waste metal production.
  • Tires do not need to be inflated regularly. The only necessary care is regular cleaning of tires from dirt. nine0049
  • Rigid tread allows you to move the cart on any surface, including slippery or loose ground.
  • They have a slight pressure on the soil, so when working on the lawn, the grass is not mechanically damaged.
  • The material is almost non-conductive, which allows the use of wheelbarrows with such wheels in places with a risk of high voltage shock.
  • The thermal conductivity of the material is also low, which makes it possible to use wheelbarrows at elevated temperatures. nine0049

The main parts of the trolley and their functions: Its main functions are cushioning and keeping the device on the go. If the tube deflates, the constant bending of a hard tread tire will cause it to deteriorate.

  • Garden Cart Bearing - needed to reduce wheel friction on the axle. In its absence, additional efforts must be made to move the device for transportation, so a bearing for a garden or construction wheelbarrow is an indispensable part of any design. It also helps in cushioning bumps. There are 2 types of bearings - sliding and rolling. It is advisable to choose the first option. nine0049
  • Wheel with tire - ensures the reliability and performance of the trolley. Most wheels are produced by stamping, according to a template. The characteristics in this case are completely dependent on the material of manufacture and the presence / absence of a coating.
  • Bushing - is located between the axle holder and the wheel and does not allow the latter to hang out.
  • Wheel assembly

How to choose the right wheel, tire or tube for gardening equipment

Why the leaves of the garden rose fall

The choice should be determined by the place for use. If you have to use on an area with a lot of stones or debris, you should choose a tire with molded rubber or urethane foam. If the area with a lot of bumps, it is better to choose pneumatic.

Important! The larger the wheel, the easier it is to pull the trolley.

What pressure can be used to inflate a wheel

    One-wheel garden wheelbarrow

When buying a tire, it is necessary to indicate the marking with the pressure with which it can be inflated. Typically, this value is in the range of 25 to 70 P.S.I. However, it is advisable not to inflate more than half of the maximum pressure of the tire.

How to change the tube on a garden cart

Garden cart wheels often go bad. For replacement, the following steps will have to be taken:

    1. Remove the wheel from the axle.
    2. Using a flat trowel, remove the tire from the disc. nine0049
    3. Remove the damaged tire, if desired, it can be sealed or replaced.
    4. Fit a new flat tire around the wheel.
