Mercedes-Benz offers a Roadside Assistance program that gives customers the opportunity to have a Mercedes-Benz representative travel to your location and help you with whatever roadside needs you may require. If you do not have the Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance program, however, it is beneficial to know how to change a flat tire on your own. Changing a flat on a Mercedes-Benz is easy and straightforward and following these instructions will make sure you and your car on back on the road in no time.

What you will need

  • Car Jack
  • 19mm Lug Nut Wrench
  • Mercedes Spare Tire

Instructions

  1. Park your car in a flat, dry place so you can jack the car up easier. Make sure your car is parked on the shoulder of the road in a safe and isolated spot to avoid oncoming traffic as much as possible.
  2. Move the shifter into “Park,” pull the parking hand brake and turn on your hazard lights.
  3. Open the trunk of the car. Lift up the trunk floor and you will find a Mercedes-Benz spare tire, lug wrench, and a car jack.
  4. Using your lug wrench, loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Be sure not to remove the lug nut completely. Loosen them approximately one turn.
  5. Locate the jacking points on your Mercedes. If you have trouble finding them, the Mercedes-Benz manual will have guided pictures.
  6. Raise the Mercedes-Benz until the flat tire hovers roughly three (3) inches off the ground.
  7. Assuming all lug nuts are loosened as described in step 4, use the lug wrench to remove all five lug nuts completely.
  8. Pull the tire straight out and carefully remove it. Gently kick the rubber part of the tire to get it off the wheel hub.
  9. Place the spare tire on the wheel hub. Align the lug nuts holes with the corresponding holes. In your spare tools kit, you may have a wheel stud guide like this one. Thread it into one of the lug nut holes.  Now push the spare tire in and make sure it is seated properly against the brake rotor,
  10. Put the lug nuts on. Screw them in as tightly as you can so the spare is firmly attached to the car’s wheel assembly.
  11. Lower the Mercedes-Benz to the ground by cranking the jack counter-clockwise. Remove the jack from underneath the car.
  12. Once the car is lowered to the ground, tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern: tighten the top lug nut first and then its opposing lug at the bottom. It’s important to tighten the lug nuts in a star-like pattern to ensure the tire is secured tight and straight.
  13. Drive you Mercedes for a few minutes and recheck the lug nuts. Make sure the lug nuts are securely fastened.

Can’t get Mercedes tire off

If the tire is not coming off, there are some quick fixes to remedy the situation.

  1. Try spraying WD-40 on the lug nuts and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Use a rubber mallet and lightly hitting the inside part of the tire, not the rim, and break up the corrosion and built-up rust. Be sure to stay away from a metal mallet/hammer to dent or damage your car.

Can’t get Mercedes lug nuts loose

One problem Mercedes-Benz owners may face is that they can’t get the lug nuts loose. Over time the lug nuts may corrode or simply refuse to come off. The lug nut wrench that Mercedes installs on these cars is inadequate to loosen these lug nuts and in can bend easily. Here is a lug nut wrench that got bent when we were trying to change a Mercedes-Benz tire.

To avoid this problem, consider using an aftermarket lug nut wrench that will not break and is extendable. For example, any Telescoping Lug Nut Wrench would be an excellent choice. It has four different socket sizes that you can use on any car. Most importantly can be extended which makes getting Mercedes lug nuts loose a breeze.

NOTE: Verification of the vehicle’s rim size must be completed if the vehicle model is available in one or more O.E. rim width options or if the vehicle is currently equipped with non-original equipment rims.
Original equipment sizes are based on the best information currently available to us. Variations based on options or changes by the manufacturer may change the original equipment size on your vehicle. Please verify the size listed matches the tire size listed on your vehicle (usually found in the door jamb) or in the Owner’s Manual. Replacement of tires with a speed rating less than the original equipment tires may reduce performance and handling.
NOTE: We make every effort to ensure that the following search results are up-to-date and accurately presented. Some variables, including vehicle modifications, “Plus Size” fitments or search menu selection errors, may result in incorrect data.
If you have any questions regarding the correct product for your vehicle, please contact a Customer Service Advisor at your local store who will assist you in selecting the correct size.
NOTE: Winter driving presents special challenges for vehicle mobility. The use of winter tires while improving traction performance in snow and ice — requires special care with regard to acceleration, braking, cornering and speed. It is important to drive with care, not only on snow and ice, but on dry and wet roads as well.
In winter driving conditions, vehicle control — and safe operation — under braking and cornering is especially dependent upon the rear tires. For this reason, winter tires are best applied to all wheel positions.
Some vehicles have specific recommendations regarding winter tires and their usage; always check and follow the vehicle tire placard and/or the vehicle owner’s manual.

  • Winter tires are best applied to all wheel positions.
  • If winter tires are applied to the front axle of any vehicle, they must also be installed on the rear. Do not apply winter tires to only the front axle — this applies to all passenger cars, SUVs and light trucks, including front wheel drive, 4X4 and all-wheel drive vehicles.
  • If winter tires are applied to the rear axle of any vehicle, it is recommended (but not required) that they be installed on the front axle.
  • All winter tires applied should be the same speed rating. It is generally acceptable to apply winter tires with a lower speed rating than the Original Equipment/All Season tires for use in winter conditions; however, speed should be reduced accordingly. Vehicles should never exceed the “top speed” of the lowest speed-rated tire on the vehicle. Otherwise, tire failure could result.
  • Winter tires operated in summer conditions may wear rapidly.
  • Studded tires, where legally allowed, follow the same recommendations above.

Step-by-step replacement of the main or backup battery Mercedes-Benz GLK

The Mercedes GLK belongs to the segment of luxury compact crossovers produced by the German auto giant.

The model turned out to be quite in demand on the Russian market, despite the solid price tag. Now you can take such a car from the salon or from the hands, but only in the secondary market. The model was discontinued in June 2015. This was due to the fact that the GLK was replaced by the GLC model. nine0003

During the operation of the vehicle, it may be necessary to replace the battery. Moreover, not all car owners know that the battery here is not one, but two at once.

Therefore, the issue of replacement is doubly complicated. As well as the cost of servicing the crossover.

Contents

  1. Battery location
  2. Battery charging
  3. Specifications
  4. Replacement battery selection
  5. Battery replacement

Battery location

First you need to understand where the main and additional batteries can be located.

The engineers of the German company decided that for the reliable operation of the crossover, it would be necessary to use 2 batteries at once.

The main battery is used to start the engine and operate the main systems. A backup or additional is required to power auxiliary and autonomous systems. But they are not interchangeable.

That is, the Mercedes GLK has in its arsenal the main starter battery, as well as an additional power source. It allows you not to lose settings when the main battery is disconnected, to keep the security system working, etc. Since Mercedes traditionally uses a large amount of electronics, it would be wrong and potentially dangerous to place the entire load on one battery. nine0003

Both the main battery and the backup battery have to be replaced. The latter is usually replaced in cases where the on-board computer gives a corresponding error.

The location of the main battery is standard, that is, under the hood of the car. The backup battery is located in the luggage compartment, in a niche near the spare wheel.

In some cases, the problem can be temporarily solved by charging.

Charging batteries

To charge the power supply that acts as the main battery, you will need a modern battery charger with automatic control. nine0003

It is not difficult to charge the main car battery on the Mercedes GLK by yourself. It needs to be charged with direct current up to 10% of the capacity.

The backup battery is charged in the same way. But it is usually not necessary to count on a long-term effect from recharging. If an additional battery gives an error, then this already means the end of its resource. When it is not possible to purchase a replacement battery in the near future, it is worth trying to get by with recharging. But it is more correct to replace the backup power supply. nine0003

Specifications

Being the owner of the German crossover Mercedes GLK 280 or other modification, when buying a new battery, be sure to pay attention to the type of battery case.

Since the Mercedes GLK provides for the installation of 2 power sources, each of them will have to be selected separately.

The starter main battery has a standard case, while the backup battery has a reduced case made to motorcycle battery standards. nine0003

To choose an analogue, you need to know which battery is original and with what characteristics it comes from the factory.

If we talk about a backup or additional battery, then these are the following parameters:

  • European type;
  • intended for motorcycles;
  • reverse polarity;
  • voltage 12 V.

But there are also characteristics that may differ. Less powerful batteries were installed from the factory for models until 2012, and after restyling, the characteristics were slightly increased. nine0003

In total, 2 variants of factory additional batteries were provided:

  • capacity 12 Ah, starting current 170 A and dimensions 150x87x145 mm;
  • capacity 12 Ah, but with a starting current of 200 A and similar dimensions.

Now about the main starter battery.

They have the following common features:

  • AGM technology before restyling, GEL after updating;
  • European style terminals;
  • reverse polarity;
  • voltage 12 V.

According to additional characteristics, the main batteries are divided into 2 groups.

The first group has the following parameters:

  • capacity in the range from 70 to 75 Ah;
  • starting current within 670-760 A;
  • housing dimensions 278x175x190 mm.

The second group includes more powerful batteries:

  • capacity 90–100 Ah;
  • cold crank current 800-900 A;
  • housing dimensions 354x175x190 mm.

Based on these characteristics, you can choose the appropriate new batteries for your Mercedes GLK. These can be originals or analogues.

It is more profitable to buy analogues from a financial point of view. At the same time, they practically do not differ in quality and efficiency. Of course, provided that these are batteries from leading manufacturers.

When choosing a battery for your Mercedes GLK crossover, pay attention to the type of engine that the car is equipped with. It can be version 280, CDi 220, petrol GLK 300, etc.

Diesel versions require a battery with higher capacity and starting current than petrol versions.

As for the backup battery, refer to the manufacturer's model specifications.

Replacement batteries are available from one of the following manufacturers:

  • Mutlu;
  • Bosch;
  • Topla;
  • Exide;
  • TAB.

For some reason, among the owners of the German crossover, it was Exide batteries that won the most distribution. nine0003

If we talk about the main starter battery, then the following models are among the popular and popular batteries:

  • Mutlu L2 63060;
  • Tudor High Tech TA640;
  • Bosch S5 Silver Plus;
  • Varta Blue Dynamic G3;
  • Varta Silver Dynamic h4;
  • Varta Silver Dynamic AGM F21;
  • Bosch S5 AGM;
  • AlphaLine AGM;
  • Moll AGM Start Stop;
  • Deka Intimidator AGM;
  • Exide Start Stop EFB etc.

Preference should be given to gel technology and exclusively maintenance-free batteries. Choosing a serviced or low-maintenance model will only save you money. But in fact, with such a battery, the car owner will have even more problems during the subsequent operation of the German premium crossover.

Battery replacement

Here we should separately consider the procedure for replacing the backup battery on the Mercedes GLK, as well as removing and installing a new main battery. nine0003

The first step is to replace the auxiliary power supply.

The procedure is not the most difficult, but it also has its own nuances. To replace the auxiliary battery:

  • turn off the engine and remove the ignition key;
  • open luggage compartment;
  • remove the floor covering in the boot;
  • there is a plastic cover on the right side that hides the backup battery;
  • remove false ceiling; nine0016
  • remove the trough, which is screwed to the floor with two bolts;
  • first disconnect the negative terminal by loosening the clamp;
  • then unscrew the fastening of the positive terminal and fold the wire to the side so that it does not touch metal surfaces;
  • Grasp the battery firmly and pull it up.

In the future, you will need to take a new battery, which is actually designed for motorcycles, since it is made in accordance with the battery standard for motorcycles. But it is he who is optimally suited for powering backup equipment on the German crossover Mercedes GLK. nine0003

When reinstalling the battery, be sure to observe the correct polarity. Do not mix up the wires, otherwise it can end very sadly.

Now to the issue of replacing the main starter battery.

The starter battery on the Mercedes GLK is located under the hood, on the left side, almost at the windshield. The battery is hidden under a black plastic case.

To remove the battery and install a new battery in its place, you must:

  • stop the engine, turn off the ignition and remove the key from the lock;
  • lift the bonnet and fix it securely;
  • use your fingers to snap off the 3 clips holding the battery case;
  • using a socket 15 and an extension, unscrew a pair of clamping plate bolts;
  • remove the bar and the fasteners themselves;
  • Using a 10 wrench or a socket head, unscrew the fastening of the negative wire and fold it to the side;
  • disconnect the air duct; nine0016
  • loosen the positive terminal, remove the wire and put it aside;
  • Grasp the edges of the case or the handles of the battery and pull the battery up.

Assembly is carried out in reverse order.

When replacing two batteries, it is important to follow the same rule. First, the negative terminal is disconnected, and then the positive one. But when installing the battery, the plus terminal returns to its place first, and the minus terminal already follows it. nine0003

A distinctive feature of the selection of a battery for a car such as the Mercedes-Benz GLK is not only that it uses 2 power sources at once, the main and the backup. Also, complex electronics and numerous consumers place increased demands on the quality of purchased batteries. This is not the case when you can consider budget category batteries. Only high-quality and efficient batteries from leading manufacturers with the best characteristics are suitable here. You can't save here. Otherwise, this will turn into unpleasant consequences after a short time after the installation of a budget battery. nine0003
