Essential tips and advice to make off-roading safe and fun.

So you’ve just taken a dive into the exciting world of ATV and side-by-side (SxS) off-roading. Before you get muddy, there are some bits of advice that’ll make enjoying or working with your new vehicle safe and fulfilling. This guide covers some key knowledge like pre-ride essentials, riding tips, your warranty, essential off-road gear, and how to maintain and repair your Can-Am ATV or SxS. Let’s get to it!

What you need to know before turning the key

Before turning the key on your new vehicle and getting to work or hitting the trail on an adventure, there are some important pre-ride essentials that are a must. Let’s take a look at two big things to consider: laws and regulations, and pre-ride inspections.

Know the laws & regulations regarding ATV and SxS riding

Obviously, laws and regulations surrounding off-road vehicle use vary from region to region. Local, state or provincial, and federal laws can all apply to registration requirements, speed limits, open and prohibited trails or where you can ride, and other rules when it comes to your ATV or side-by-side.

Just like with your car or truck, states or provinces impose specific rules regarding how old an off-road vehicle operator must be. The type of your vehicle or engine size can also affect age requirements, so be sure to be certain anyone operating the vehicle meets those standards.

In some regions, riders under a certain age must wear a helmet, but in reality, anyone operating an off-road vehicle should wear a helmet, so the best practice is to ensure everyone on board has proper head protection. Even if not required by law, safety is top priority. Check if an approved safety course is required in your region before operating an ATV or side-by-side, which is often the case for younger riders.

The essential pre-ride checklist

Whether it’s your very first ride or your hundredth, it’s vital to always thoroughly inspect your ATV or SxS before even starting the engine and hitting the trail. Pre-ride inspections will reveal any damage or issues that could cut your day short. Better to discover it at home before than late in the middle of nowhere, right?

But what should you look for? Check your tire pressure and inspect the tire treads and sidewalls for any punctures, wear or foreign objects stuck in the rubber. Double-check the tightness of the wheel and axle nuts and give the tires a little rock to look for loose fasteners or worn bearings. Check the lights, switches and gauges in the cockpit to make sure they’re working properly. Check your oil and coolant levels and look for any sign of leaks. Make sure your throttle, shifter and brakes are all working and check how much fuel you have, obviously.

Inspect any accessories or racks to be sure they’re not damaged and are attached properly; you don’t want to lose anything out there, especially since you put some much love into customizing your vehicle, right? Also check for any potential loose parts or any cracks that could cause problems.

Your ATV or side-by-side will have come with an operator’s guide that contains an inspection checklist. Use it every time you take your new vehicle out and before long, you’ll be doing the inspection quickly without giving it a second thought. Remember: any small issue you find now at home is a big problem you avoided while out on the trail.

Essential ATV & side-by-side riding tips for beginners

If you are new to the world of off-road vehicles, it’s vital to learn as much as you can about riding before heading out. Safety is the highest priority, and while it may seem like a lot to learn now, before long it’ll be second nature. Having fun on the trails or getting big jobs done is why you got an ATV or SxS in the first place, but avoiding incidents and accidents should always be number one.

Safe and comfortable seating position

A proper seating position is crucial for comfortable and safe operation of an ATV or side-by-side. As you become a seasoned off-roader, sitting, standing and leaning will become natural, but be aware as a new rider of how shifting your body weight can stabilize your ATV over terrain or in turns. Never lock your elbows and knees, keeping a relaxed stance to avoid painful stress to your joints, feet and hands.

Make sure you can achieve a naturally comfortable sitting position on your vehicle without having to strain or reach for controls. Seats should be adjusted to allow easy control of the pedals with a relaxed driving position with elbows bent. You’ll be more comfortable this way and avoid strain and tightness in your back and shoulders, which can grow painful through a long day of riding. Your passengers should also be comfortable and have easy access to holds or bars to stabilize themselves.

How to ride different terrain

Different terrain requires different skills and as you evolve as a rider. You’ll collect a toolkit of skills to tackle different conditions. Learn which off-road vehicles (ORV) and accessories are appropriate for which conditions, and remember that the wrong setup can decrease your vehicle’s performance. After your learn basic off-roading skills, you’ll begin to collect the experience you need before hitting the rougher, more difficult trails or advanced terrain like dunes or deep mud.

Love learning fast? Can-Am’s Driving School video series can help you learn key skills and make you into a better rider. Off-road legends Dale Brisby, Dustin Jones and Hunter Miller will give you the secrets to skills like taking turns at higher speeds or hydroplaning on your side-by-side.

With pre-ride inspections and key advice, what you’re really after is worry-free adventure on the trails. But what really makes days long and carefree are your warranty. The protection of an extended warranty like Can-Am’s B.E.S.T. lets you focus on your vehicle and enjoy every mud-sprayed minute. How to start an ATV: methods and problems

New models of ATVs are equipped with an electric starter. Therefore, problems with starting almost never arise. But in older models, manual kick starter can be installed. With him, beginners sometimes have difficulties.

To start the ATV, do the following:

    • Check fuel in the tank and ignition key position. It must be in the "on" position. Also, the ignition switch must be in the "on" position on the control panel.
    • Speed should be switched to "neutral ". You need to squeeze the clutch (if any), and then set the switch to the "neutral" position. The light on the control panel usually comes on at this point. You can also try pushing the ATV. If the wheels are spinning, then everything is done correctly.
    • If vehicle is cold, Pull the choke lever towards you. So the mixture of gasoline will be enriched with air. This will make it easier to start a cold system. If the engine is warm, this manipulation is not required.
    • If the model is equipped with electric starter , just press and hold the corresponding button until the engine starts. If there is a kick starter, you need to get on the ATV and press the starter until the factory. In both cases, need to squeeze out the gas . The throttle valve will open, adding fuel to the engine.
    • Push back choke lever . As soon as the engine starts, the vehicle is ready to move.

    Common failures

Lack of fuel in the tank

Paradoxically, but sometimes the owners of ATVs simply forget to pour gasoline into the tank. Therefore, before proceeding with the diagnosis, it is worth checking the fuel level.

    Dead battery

It is not uncommon for the cause of the problem to be insufficient battery charge . It can be charged at home. If the ATV is small, you can purchase an additional battery. The cost of batteries for budget models is relatively low.

    Contact failure

If the battery is good, but the starter does not work, it may be worth looking for the cause in the starting system. It is necessary to try to close the contacts, which are located on the starter relay. To do this, you need to use a screwdriver. The relay is usually located under the seat. Two thick wires are connected to it.

If you need to find a way to start the ATV without a key, you can also follow these steps. This technique will be effective only if the system is not controlled by the central computer . Otherwise, blocking will work.

If, after the manipulations, the engine starts up, then the problem is in the launch system . Otherwise, you will need to look for the cause of the malfunction further or visit a service center.

    Stop button

Each ATV has a stop button on the steering wheel. Usually it is red. This button is responsible for turning off the ignition, it turns off the engine . If you do not bring it to its previous position, the engine, of course, will not start. Therefore, it is worth checking in what position the "Stop" button is located.

    Clipped check

Another security system provided in ATVs is a special check. This is a cable that is attached to the ATV at one end and to the driver at the other. If the latter falls off the ATV while driving, check flies out and the ignition turns off. You won't be able to start the vehicle without this receipt either. If this part is lost, you will need to look for the appropriate contacts and close them directly.

    Blown fuse

Another possible reason why the ATV won't start is a blown fuse. If the ATV is small, there is usually only one fuse. It is located next to battery . The suitability of this part for operation can be assessed visually. The cost of the fuse is cheap, so it is better to have several of these parts in stock.

If there is no spare fuse, and the failure happened away from home, you can insert wire instead. This is a temporary solution that will allow you to get home. It is impossible to constantly replace the fuse with wire. You can burn much more expensive elements of the system.

    Switch failure

This part is located under the seat or next to the motor (depending on the model). It's a small box with wires coming out of it. They are connected to the ignition coil. It is difficult to assess the health of this part, so it is better to contact a service center with a similar problem.

    No spark

If the spark plug wire is broken or the ignition coil is broken, it will not be difficult to check the performance of these systems. The candle is unscrewed and inserted into the candle cap. Next, you need to attach it with the metal side to the engine and press the starter button. If there is no spark between the electrodes, this is a sign of a breakdown. Try cleaning the spark plug electrodes and adjusting the gap between them.

If there is a spark, then the problem lies either in the candle cap or in the candle. You need to buy a new part and change it.

    Field launch

It will be possible to eliminate many malfunctions and start the ATV even in the forest. For models with a manual transmission, you can try to start the engine from the pusher. It should be said right away that this cannot be done with an automatic transmission. In other cases, it is recommended to look for the cause of the breakdown according to the points listed above.

Maxim Rogov / author of the article

Back in 2011, I got on a motorcycle for the first time and since then I have been addicted to motorsport. I love trying new bikes. I dream of a BMW F800GT and a motorcycle tour of Peru.

Can-Am RYKER video review - BRP Center North in Moscow

motor vehicles. Yes, you will not feel the adrenaline rush every moment on the SPYDER, slipping into the aisle. You will not lay corners by striking sparks from the asphalt with a kickstand. You don't have to brutally squeak with motorcycle boots and look like a knight in protective gear. A helmet and gloves will suffice.

Can-Am SPYDER is its own world. A world of freedom, security and confidence!

Now we can say with confidence that the SPIDER is a special part of the motorcycle movement, where comfort and safety coexist with the spirit of freedom and headwind. Check out our travel photos.

And our SPIDER tour movies will give you an accurate idea of the image component of this trike.

What does the new Ryker Roadster bring to the world? Its price in the US is exactly half the cost of one SPYDER F-3, and it is three times cheaper than the SPYDER RT LTD. However, selling two or three Rykers instead of one SPYDER is not the goal of the creators of the new roadster. Yes, of course, it will now be available to those who previously only dreamed of SPIDER, but it went beyond his budget.

“We know our customers. We know why they buy Spyder and why they don't. And we know that we have a huge opportunity for growth. On average, our regular customer is 62 years old. Of course, this is a lot, but the average purchasing age of our customers does not bother us at all. In fact, we just understand it. These are people who have a guarantee of a permanent stable income and have time to enjoy life. They use their roadsters to travel, to be with their friends, to spend time with their spouses, and they love them. They are amazing clients and we intend to continue to take care of them.

“On the other hand, we know that there are a significant number of potential customers who would like to own the Can-Am Spyder , but it is too expensive for them. We also know that there are people who are wondering: do I really like road bikes or not? They are not completely sure.

And we know there are young people who love to ride and crave the thrill of driving but can't afford it. What all of these groups have in common is the desire for a low enough price to make it easy for them to make that decision and buy a three-wheeled safety roadster. It would be more correct to say that the word "easy" is the goal of our Can-Am RYKER : Easy to buy, easy to drive and feel.”

Listening to Perro's words, we are reminded of the vast number of phrases that motorcycle manufacturers have said in the past: "We are trying to attract new, younger customers."

All the people in the focus group had some skepticism about what exactly made it possible to reduce the price by two and three times. I mean, everyone thought: what was left of SPYDER when the manufacturer went so far in lowering the price tag?

However, upon seeing him for the first time, everyone was impressed by how fresh he looked and how attractive he was. The RYKER Roadster looked airy and cool from a distance, even odd from some angles. But, it definitely didn't look like something indistinct or cheap, which was a surprise to everyone.

The more we looked at it and paid attention to its details, the more we noticed the desired characteristics, which is completely illogical for an inexpensive model. For example, no one could take their eyes off the giant swingarm rear suspension. This is a completely open element that looks more stylish and brutal than anything you have seen before on motorcycles.

"Wait a minute, but I don't see a drive belt or chain?"

“No, they are not here! A drive shaft-cardan is installed in its pendulum.

How is it? Even the more expensive Spyders F3 and RT roadsters don't have a gimbal! Usually this is a structural element of the most expensive touring motorcycles . You can get confused in the associations of price and technical filling of RYKER, and this is just the beginning!

So, and then we see on the Can-AM RYKER the rear wheel mount is only on one side, like the Ducati 9 superbike0195 Panigale!

“But… it shouldn't be! This is the realm of supermonsters and premium bikes, not economy class!

To which the BRP staff responds, "Well, actually, this design requires fewer parts, it's cheaper!".

We have always felt that there is a connection between BRP Can-Am's engineers and marketers and the motorcycle world. Although they operate in a different universe where familiar things are ATVs, Side-by-Sides , Snowmobiles 9The 0196 and jet skis, not to mention the jet boats, were also part of BRP's history.

A good example of this connection is the Ryker transmission. This is a CVT belt drive.

In the world of two-wheelers, the CVT is a familiar transmission for scooters and mopeds. And this is the standard perception of the CVT in the two-wheeled world. Although in reality CVT is very close to being the best automatic solution for many motorcycles instead of automatic transmission. But, this is another topic for biker disputes.

And for RYKER, it's just perfect - the engineers needed to find a solution for a model that was supposed to be as easy to use as possible.

This "Easy" priority given to the engineers had several other technical implications for Ryker. Do you remember how the Spyder always flashed a checklist of lamps on the dash first, and after a few seconds you had to press the “secret button” M to be allowed to start the engine?

This is gone now. We get on the Can-Am RYKER, turn the key and ... everything is ready!

Reverse? Just pull the lever on the left side with your foot. Progress is remarkable, isn't it?

As for the brake, it remains as before on one pedal on the right side. And that means the CAN-AM Ryker could be one of the easiest motorcycles to use.

What else? For example, RYKER offers a comfortable riding position with the improved U-Fit system. Without tools, both handlebars and footpegs can be adjusted and moved back and forth in seconds.

As far as storage goes, there's no Spyder-family trunk space, but there's a handy 7-litre stowage just above the engine. Speaking of engines, there are two options: the 47hp ROTAX ACE 600cc parallel twin and the 77hp 900ACE Triple ROTAX. The passenger seat is an option and comes in a variety of options.

Ryker Rally Edition The is also the first Can-Am roadster with off-road capabilities: it comes with a reinforced rear frame already installed (it also allows you to install a passenger seat), longer travel suspension (plus 1 inch), ROTAX motor 900 ACE Triple and optional electronic mode for extreme RALLY driving.

Here is a story from one of the BRP employees involved in the development of Ryker, BRP Senior Vice President of Design, Innovation and Development Denys Lapointe. He is one of those who is invaluable for interviews because he is not afraid to explain in detail how the technique is made.

He answered the question how difficult it was to come up with such a technique that combines the price of an economy class and the advantages of a premium brand?

“It's very difficult to build a high quality product at a low cost. We have experienced it to the fullest. This required not only all of our resources, but also required us to work differently. We went through a similar experience a few years ago when we built the "SEA-DOO SPARK" which sold for an almost unbelievable starting price of $4,999 when it was introduced.

But, for Ryker, we had to go further. In order to properly explain this, I must return in my story to the very beginning. We already knew when we created the first Spyder in 2008 that we would need an inexpensive model later. Remember what our original goal was: we wanted to take a road bike to an incredible level of safety. We hoped that 3 wheels would have a noticeable impact on the two wheeler market. And we ended up changing that market. Then we immediately realized that one of the main barriers to entry into the market of the 3-wheeler, which we offered in 2008, would be too high a price. So that's when the SPYDER project started at a low cost.

“Initially we thought we could find a way out in a less powerful engine on the Spyder RS. We tried, but this option just didn't work. We focused on the RT , ST and F3 models for 6 or 7 years, from about 2008 to 2014, and it was after this stage that the Ryker project was in full swing.”

“We have learned a lot from our Spyder family. Don't forget that we were in uncharted territory, and we are in fact still there. There were no precedents, no one had offered products like ours before. Over time, there were only two barriers to our ultimate goal - pricing and ease of use. Roadsters 9The 0195 SPYDER sold well, but we sincerely hoped for more. During our 10 year anniversary last year, we announced that over 100,000 units had been sold. This was the first time we released official Spyder sales information and many people commented that it was not bad at all.”

“We are not unique in the motorcycle business. We know motorcyclists well, many of them are now our customers. But if we go back to the original idea of the three-wheeled idea, then we find that this (over 100,000 pieces) is actually not very many. Because we do not just consider those bikers who already ride as clients. We are also looking at a much larger proportion of car and motorcycle enthusiasts. Essentially, these are ordinary people who have a driver's license and are open to an active lifestyle. It is from this perspective that we confidently say that higher sales in the future are absolutely achievable for us.”

“This information and analysis is the reason for the Can-Am RYKER idea. However, when the retail price of the end product is relatively high, there are far fewer issues to be addressed. This principle does not work with our minimum aggressive RYKER price.

If there are still a thousand component parts to the created equipment, then this is a thousand of those components that must be produced and paid for by suppliers. And then there is no way to reduce costs and solve the material issues necessary to achieve the ultimate goal. In this case, we needed to think differently.

Luckily we had experience with SEA-DOO Spark and we knew it. Basically it comes down to calculating the lower price bar and more features for each component. And we also had the goal of making the Ryker the most customizable “middle” owner to suit your tastes and needs. It was an exciting assignment for the entire BRP CAN-AM team that ended in a pleasant surprise. For example, we chose the wheel attachment system on one side because it's simply cheaper and easier. But in the end it turned out to be a very desirable design element and a very cool design element!

“This type of logic has been applied to absolutely everything on the RYKER, although it is not always immediately noticeable. There is one large plastic part molded for the hood that holds many other parts together, saving a lot of brackets and fasteners. We even got our suppliers together and asked them to rethink so they could create design elements that are cheaper and with more features per element. They did it!”

“But it's easy to cut costs and go too far and forget the idea behind the product. For example, Ryker not only had to be affordable, but also should be understandable for those who get behind the wheel of motorcycles for the first time. Most of this question has to do with shifting gears on the go. We went with the CVT, which we use in many of our types of BRP vehicles and know well. It wasn't the cheapest choice, but Ryker was supposed to be the turning point in 'EASY'!

And yet, the low price was only half the battle. The other is availability. One of the barriers for new motorcycle owners is getting a driver's license. Of course, it is necessary to go through extensive training before setting out on a motorcycle journey. What about a 3 wheel roadster, especially for those who already have a driver's license? Can-Am believes you don't need to learn how to ride a motorcycle to ride three-wheeled roadsters.

If you have a driving licence, in most countries you only need minimal practical training to drive a RYKER or SPYDER roadster.

Canadian brand BRP is not just words and thoughts, but rather a practical mission to change the rules of the game in the recreational equipment market. Since 2010, the province of Quebec has served as the first launching pad for this change. In Quebec, if you only have a car license, then you only need to complete a practical 7-hour driving course and you can already drive a roadster!

At the time of this writing, according to José Perro, Senior Vice President, Can-Am On-Road, 39States have already adopted this change in traffic rules in the US and they are going to eventually introduce them for everyone.

And here is the opinion of an American motorcycle expert. He asks himself questions: Why is it so difficult to get a motorcycle license in the USA? Why can't you ride a scooter up to 125cc in the US when you already have a car license, which is common practice in Europe? Why aren't there new technologies that really make it easier for beginners to ride a bike? Why is there not a single motorcycle on the market with a CVT transmission? CVT technology is five point and common on scooters, ATVs and snowmobiles, isn't it? Why are women only 15% of motorcyclists?

In the US, 50% of buyers of the SPYDER Roadsters are women!

RYKER OPTIMIZED CENTER OF GRAVITY: With a lower stance that delivers a dynamic ride, you can confidently tackle tight turns without losing control of the road.

RYKER ENGINE OPTIONS: Rotax 600 ACE two-cylinder is the perfect combination of affordability and power (47 hp) and Rotax 900 ACE three-cylinder is the best solution for power and delight (77 hp)! Combined with the low vehicle weight (130 kg lighter than the F3), these engines guarantee an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

CONFIDENCE on RYKER: VSS uses a range of technologies, including SCS/ABS/TCS, to control the vehicle and help the driver maintain confidence on the road.

RYKER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (CVT): No need to change gears. The gearbox itself will find the perfect combination of power and fuel economy. Reverse gear will make maneuvering much easier.
