I had an incident last week where my Arctic Cat 400(auto) wouldn't start, it'd been sitting for a while. Anyway, I go through the manual and it says my model has no choke,, its an electronic choke(which is not true, it has a manual choke, also). Before I found the manual choke, I drained the battery trying to start it, so I put the charger on it and got to thinking,, I wonder if I can start it with the pull cord,,,,, NOT!!!!! So I go through the manual again looking for instructions on starting it with the cord, all it basically says is,, "pull the cord", if your starter becomes disabled. Anyway,, I couldn't start it with the cord, but the manual doesn't say anything about the key position or anything about starting it with the cord. Has anyone ever had to do that and is there some trick to it? I don't wanna have to find this out after I'm stranded in the woods or out on the ice. Also, once I found the manual choke, I tapped it twice and she fired right up.

The key should be in the "on" position.
Also, if there's no decompression lever, I read on another thread that one of the strokes is of lessor compression and you should slowly pull until it roatates to that stroke. That was on a Polaris I believe but it may be true on yours also...

Mine has decompression lever. Pull slowly until it's on compression stroke, then turn the key on and give a big yank. Do it on mine a fw times a year to make sure it works.

That's the way it is on my polaris, make sure it's not on the compression stroke or else you'll pull the cord and the cord will stop and your hand will be in the air and your fingers will feel like there still be attached to the handle and you'll feel this deep burning sensation...like ya ain't got no fingers left....:yikes:

Yep, key on as others have stated. I'm not sure about the decompression deal on my Kaw, I'll have to look. Either way, pull starting a 633cc V-twin is not a lot of fun! I had to do it after a full day in the woods in freezing conditions last deer season. It worked nicely but I won't make it a habit!
My Kaw is cold blooded and the manual choke is necessary even in August if it has sat for a day or so. Do yourself a favor and buy one of the inexpensive Battery Tenders...the 1.5 - 2 amp models. They make them so you can leave a set of quick connects directly to your battery and just plug in the charger for fast easy use. Keeps your battery in tip top condition. I use one and know it will make a difference during the cold deer season and when I'm running the winch a lot when plowing. Cost $20-$30 and you'll never have to worry about a dead battery again....unless it really needs to be replaced.

The Battery Tender JR Works great. J&P Cycles (catalogue)sells them cheaper.
I bought a different brand at Wal-Mart but similar for $20....can't remember the name though.

It's technically not a decompression lever....more like a Top Dead Center (TDC) lever. All it does is TDC the piston in the chamber so when pulled the piston is on it's way down and not on the compression stroke.

I know that feeling:tdo12: .
How do I know where TDC is though?? I mean, sometimes I would pull the cord and it would come out about 6 to 8 inches and that was it and the other times it was like the feeling mentioned above.

I'll second Swamp Monsters Recommendation on the Battery Tender, I have 2...one permanently mounted on my boat and then a Battery Tender Jr. which I use on my Quad and my Lawn Tractor, ya just plug it in and walk away, it does the rest & doesn't dry out you battery either. I've got an 87 Suzuki LT 230 E and I'm on my 2nd battery in 19 years. If I had the Battery Tender Jr for the first one...I might still be using it.

I have a suzuki 500 quadrunner 4X4. Suzuki makes the motors for Arctic cat. I have used my pull start about 50 times and it fires right up every time. All of your start up procedures should be the same as if you were starting it electrically. Make sure the gas is on, key is in on position, run switch turned to on etc... Give it a little choke and pull on it. This is what works for me.

OFF-ROAD METAMORPHOSES
A similar transformation took place this year with the Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro ATV, which received LTD performance. Despite the fact that there are practically no technically significant changes, it is extremely difficult to even recognize it externally. This is due to the snorkel placed above the “hood”. It is installed regularly, even at the factory, and it resembles either a periscope tube, or the barrel of some incomprehensible, but therefore even more terrible weapon. However, the characteristic feline cut of the eye-headlights remained.
The dashboard is very laconic, but with all that, everything you need is on it. The large analog speedometer scale is complemented by a digital display showing the fuel level, the transmission mode involved, as well as those parameters that the driver has selected in advance.
The Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro is purpose-built for tame off-road use. This is clear from the last two words in its title. Therefore, a highly raised snorkel is not a whim of an erotically inclined designer. There are also large 28-inch alloy wheels for better cross-country ability. Regular tires corresponding — Maxxis Zilla. The levers and CV joints from below and from the sides have special protection. True, it is more decorative, and when hitting a stone, there will probably be little sense from it. But the plastic of the wings looks very reliable.
The ATV is equipped with two luggage platforms. The front one takes on 45 kg, and on the back one can generally load almost a centner! There is a winch and the possibility of installing a tow bar. The role of the front bumper is performed by a kengurin, which even covers the headlights; reinforced rear bumper.
INDIVIDUAL WEAPON
Despite its solid size and powerful engine, it is better to use the Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro alone for reconnaissance. No, if necessary, a passenger can also be seated on it, but there will be nowhere for him to put his legs: there is not even a place where they can be put down. A subtle hint that the cool guys don't need the second number.
Having driven the cat over rugged terrain, I understood the reason: the Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro simply provokes you to climb into such jungle, from which it is not always possible to emerge victorious even without a passenger. With a standard base and track, the ground clearance of the Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro can be called huge - 35 cm, which means that its center of gravity is quite high. It is possible to overcome the tendency to capsize, which is inevitable in this situation, only by timely and correct movement of the pilot over the entire surface of the quadra. The passenger may simply not keep up with the pilot.
Injection motor with a low growl instantly confirms its 700 "cubes". It immediately becomes clear that the jokes with him are bad. It is necessary to stroke such a “kitty” very carefully. Probably, in order to exclude the possibility of thoughtless flirting, the engine speed limit is provided in the reverse mode: that is, you can only drive slowly, no matter how hard you press the gas trigger. But this restriction can be removed: just press the yellow Reverse Override button on the left handle with your thumb. And then the engine and in reverse mode will work with full power.
However, the Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro calls forward, and only forward. For starters, the drive is only on two wheels, so you will feel the suspension better. Yes, it is really very comfortable - independent both front and rear. Its large strokes allow it to pass decent-sized obstacles without loss of control. And if both driving wheels are firmly on the ground, then you can not connect the “front end” yet, save it.
However, the moisture-saturated land near Moscow is treacherous and still requires the 4x4 mode. The front axle is connected in an elementary way: you just need to move the black key on the right handle to the left. You can do it on the go as well. The main thing is not to turn and that there is no slippage. With all-wheel drive, Arctic Cat ran more confidently. These unnecessary drifts of stern have ceased. It is pleasant to note that the steering wheel is practically not heavier - all thanks to the electric power steering. On the contrary, there was a feeling that confidence had flowed into the hands. With such an arsenal, you can go into the swamps. Really, why not ride along the park paths with such a huge snorkel and on evil rubber?
Seat-drenched Arctic Cat 700 Mud Pro hacked hard through the swamp slush. Only, unlike him, I was somehow uncomfortable, sitting in the water…
The forest clearing abounded with flooded pits. I almost fell into one of them. I had to turn on the low row, lock the front differential and get out slowly, slowly. By the way, the 4WD Lock mode turns on in an interesting way: the same black key must be pushed up with the thumb of the right hand (notches applied to it also hint at this). And soon after me, one of my colleagues fell into this hole. This is where the standard winch came in handy.
In general, I definitely liked Mud Pro by LTD. By and large, what happened to him can be called factory tuning. Let it be. This is no worse than looking for the necessary bells and whistles in stores and on the Internet - of course, this approach deprives you of an exciting process, but it gives a guaranteed result.
It's no secret that the ATV was designed as an agricultural machine. Later, people began to use this vehicle for entertainment, recreation and even racing. However, today there are still manufacturers who remember the true purpose of the ATV. One such manufacturer is Arctic Cat with its 700 Super Duty Diesel ATV.
At first glance, this "cat" is nothing special. Dull color, four wheels, winch, simple design. Is that the diesel engine attracts attention. However, you just need to start the engine and your opinion will change dramatically.
A booming roar and a jet of black smoke from the chimney are the first signs of "diesel". Such quadrics are quite rare not only in Russia, but all over the world. The reason for this is the "despondency" of diesel engines. However, this concept is unlikely to apply to the Arctic Cat 700 Diesel. This ATV will give odds to many of its brethren.
The diesel Arctic Cat was developed by order of the US military department. Hence its economy, excellent load capacity and unsurpassed reliability. These qualities were appreciated not only by the military, but also by ordinary farmers.
So let's start with the engine. Our Arctic Cat Diesel is equipped with a low-maintenance Lombardini engine with a displacement of 686 "cc" and two cylinders. Power reaches 40 hp, and the maximum speed is limited to just 60 km / h. Although this is quite enough for the economy.
This engine is happy to eat six types of diesel fuel and biofuels, unlike gasoline ATVs, which in most cases only fit the 95th. Let's immediately think about fuel consumption. Diesel "cat" consumes half as much as similar gasoline ATVs.
Vibration is felt at low speeds, but as soon as you add gas, it disappears. Well, in order to move the Arctic Cat 700 Super Duty Diesel from its place, you need to squeeze the gas almost to failure.
In addition to working in agriculture, this quadric will perfectly cope with the role of transport for a hunter or fisherman. In addition to the high-torque and unpretentious engine, it also boasts an “indestructible suspension”. Well, a large carrying capacity will be a nice bonus.
This quadric can overcome any impassability. He also famously copes with extreme climbs.
For off-road realities, the quad was also equipped with “toothy” rubber Duro 3 Star Kaden 25th radius. For some versions of the quadric, a compressor is available that allows you to adjust tire pressure, as well as a rear winch.
The suspension here is independent on double A-arms. The designers made the suspension low, but at the same time they tried to do it without compromising ground clearance.
