In the event of a catastrophic blowout, run-flat tires are engineered to stay on the rim. These tires have a gel layer under the tread surface and are self-sealing. Here’s another way to tell if your tires are flat:

  1. Consult your car’s owner’s manual. If your tires are run-flat, the manual will explain why. It comes with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
  2. Your vehicle is more likely to have a run-flat tire if it is newer. To find out, look at your car’s tire. On several of their vehicles, BMW is the most prevalent brand to employ run-flat tires. Lexus and Toyota are two companies that do the same thing.
  3. Check to see if your vehicle has a spare tire. If your car has a spare tire, it is almost certainly not a run-flat tire, as run-flat tires do not come with one in the trunk. If your car comes with a tire repair kit instead of a spare tire, it can be run-flat.

  • Sound. A completely flat tire produces a slapping sound, not always rhythmic, but in sync with the rotation of the wheel. This sound is not loud, but the driver usually perceives it as abnormal and stops to clarify the situation. A tire that is not completely flat starts to hum, as if the car has hit coarse-grained asphalt. This noise is not always obvious and is often not perceived in the cabin as an emergency.

A half-flat tire is harder to see on the move, but such a ride ruins the tire, even if the road is flat: rubber and carcass suffer from overheating.

  • Vibrations . Not always, but it happens that a tire that has lost air “gives off to the steering wheel” with jerks, which turn into a rumble at speeds of more than 20-30 km / h. This is a good and understandable signal, there are no problems with its “recognition”, even if the driver is inexperienced.
  • Pulls to the side. On many cars, primarily rear-wheel drive, a damaged, even half-flat tire provokes the car to move to the side. Many drivers do not notice this immediately, especially if the road is not smooth and not straight.

Solution 1. Replace tire

In the event of a puncture, the most obvious solution is of course to replace the punctured tire. Sometimes you have no other choice: a puncture cannot always be fixed. To change a tire to spare wheel or wafer , start by loosening the wheel nuts.

Then jack up the vehicle with the jack supplied with the spare wheel and finish removing the nuts. Then remove the wheel to replace it. However, be careful if it's a pancake: don't exceed 80 km/h and quickly replace it with a real tire.
