Service of oversized tires at the Mikhailovsky GOK im.

A.V. Varicheva

Oversized tires (OHT) are one of the major items of operating costs of a mining enterprise. Tires operate under extreme loads, wear out quickly, fail due to cuts, punctures, rubber peeling and other damage. KGSH have never been distinguished by affordable prices and ease of purchase, but today the problem with supplies from abroad has escalated to the limit and the requirements of mining enterprises for the organization of the tire industry have grown significantly.

For the service of the CGW, specialists are required, a production facility equipped with large-sized special equipment, equipment for mounting and dismounting wheels, as well as transport and lifting equipment. Not every mining enterprise is able to organize its own service with the necessary qualifications; specialized enterprises come to their rescue.

The SP-Tyre group of companies provides comprehensive services for the maintenance of tire tires, starting with the supply of Triangle tires, tire fitting, repair of tire tires using modern technologies and materials, and the introduction of tire pressure and temperature monitoring systems. In 2020, the company began active cooperation with Mikhailovsky GOK.

We talked with Igor Leonidovich Kryukov, Head of ATU of Mikhailovsky Mining and Processing Plant named after M.V. A.V. Varicheva.

Igor Leonidovich Kryukov in 1998 graduated from the instrument-making department of the Kursk State Technical University with a degree in power supply engineering for industrial enterprises.

2016 to 2020 Headed the Business System Development Directorate at Mikhailovsky GOK. In 2020, he was appointed head of the automotive and tractor department of JSC Mikhailovsky GOK named after. A.V. Varicheva.

- Tell us about the fleet of vehicles, tires and their operating conditions at your enterprise.

- Automotive and tractor management (ATU) of the Mikhailovsky GOK named after. A.V. Varicheva operates more than 130 units of various mining equipment. First of all, these are mining dump trucks with a carrying capacity of 130–240 tons, as well as a large number of auxiliary mechanisms: heavy, medium and light bulldozers, motor graders, front loaders with a bucket capacity of 6 to 19 m3. Accordingly, the tires are used in different dimensions, different manufacturers. On dump trucks we use tires of the elite category, on auxiliary equipment - less well-known brands, but no less quality in their price category. The average tire mileage varies by size, tire brand and type of heavy truck and can range from 65,000 to 100,000–120,000 km.

The characteristics of the iron ore quarry and our hard ores have an impact on the service life. We face accelerated tread wear, there are punctures and side cuts, but we are constantly working towards improving the efficiency of the use of equipment. For each tire damage, we analyze, look for the root cause, and develop measures for the future.

– How much damage does the mining and processing complex suffer from premature failure of the CGW? Do you ship tires for retreading?

– The costs are tangible. According to statistics, CGW is the second most important cost item for the operation and maintenance of heavy vehicles. But, apart from the direct costs of acquiring tires, each premature failure of the OHG and, moreover, the OHG is a significant loss of production volumes.

As for tire retreading, we are not aware of the practice of their widespread use in the conditions of iron ore quarries in the Russian Federation. Perhaps we need to look more broadly, to study the experience of foreign enterprises. Sometimes information about such experiments slips through, but we do not have reliable information about the large-scale use of retreaded tires. However, the situation is changing quite quickly, new technologies are emerging, so this possibility cannot be ruled out either.

– Do you buy CGS from abroad? What measures are you taking to save tire life?

- Previously, we bought tires in Europe, America, Japan. Today we are working on the possibility of acquiring CGW at factories in China and Belarus. We are also working on increasing the service life of tires. We have developed a number of measures aimed at increasing the mileage of tires and reducing the risk of tire damage. This and the proven method of tire rotation, the use of tire sealant, have also established tight control over tire pressure. A potential solution to this problem is bus outsourcing. At Mikhailovsky GOK, a similar experiment is being carried out - they entered into an agreement with the company for the provision of these services. Payment for tires is carried out according to the actual cargo turnover. The project has already produced economic results.

Mikhailovsky GOK also implemented the practice of commission weekly road inspections. The condition of technological roads is always a priority. So, having analyzed the length of open pit roads and our possibilities to allocate small dump trucks for backfilling, we decided to transfer the BELAZ dump truck with a payload capacity of 130 tons, which has worked out its time in the open pit, to utility transport. This event allowed us to quickly deliver large volumes of crushed stone to the road surface repair area. Improvement in the quality of the pavement made it possible to reduce the number of tire damage by a factor of three in the first month.

Air dryers were purchased and installed on the compressors to eliminate moisture in the tires, which causes the destruction of the cord and corrosion of the discs. We monitor the uniform wear of tires and do not allow tires with different tread wear to be on the same axle.

We use Pressure Pro and MEMS systems for pressure control. Today we are looking for the most optimal replacement option.

We understand that tire life is highly dependent on the skills of drivers and wheeled machine operators. To instill proper driving skills, we conduct internships. We do not conduct special training yet, but we consider it a promising direction and an important area for our development.

– How is tire fitting and tire repair organized at Mikhailovsky GOK?

– Historically, tire repairs were carried out on their own, for which there is a sufficiently equipped site. Starting in 2022, we have outsourced this function.

The tender was won by SP-Tyre, which brought its specialized equipment and components for tire repair. The staff of the company is trained and certified. Each tire is covered by a warranty. SP-Tyre specialists are completely autonomous, they go to the quarry on their own equipment, monitor the performance of sensors, measure the tread, draw up a rotation schedule, etc.

Today, SP-Tyre specialists are recruiting and training additional personnel so that within a month we will transfer to them the last function - dismantling and mounting wheels on dump trucks.

- Can you already evaluate the results of cooperation with SP-Tyre?

- This is the first experience of the enterprise in transferring these works to outsourcing, so we cannot provide comparative analytics. SP-Tyre services are sufficient and correspond to our terms of reference, the qualifications of employees and the approach to work do not raise doubts about professionalism. The effect is visible: indicators such as the coefficient of technical availability (TOC) and the coefficient of equipment utilization (OI) have increased, downtime associated with tires has been significantly reduced, which allowed the transport of additional volume of rock mass.

In conclusion, I would like to add that a well-organized tire industry with the involvement of a highly specialized organization can significantly reduce organizational and technical downtime, increase the CTG and CRO of the entire technological fleet, and help reduce the specific consumption of tires and fuel due to the organization of tire pressure monitoring every shift. This is an important component of the efficiency of the entire production process of the enterprise.

  • Truth or dare: is it worth repairing tires with a harness
  • Author: Evgeniy Balabas

Repairing a tire with a tourniquet is like playing truth or dare. Pravda speaks of the unreliability and sometimes even the danger of do-it-yourself express wheel repairs. Well, "action" allows you to take risks in order to achieve the desired result. What to choose?

The tubeless tire repair technology itself is very old. She was known abroad, and even in the USSR almost half a century ago. However, it spread massively (namely massively) among Russian car owners and hit the shelves of car dealerships only in the mid-2000s. Nevertheless, not all drivers are personally familiar with it even to this day, after a decade and a half. Many of those who are familiar theoretically have never put it into practice. And a huge number of drivers, having seen enough videos on the Internet, are afraid to use it ... Let's try once again to return to this seemingly repeatedly chewed story and dot the i's on the issue of flagellar repair. We have already described the process itself in the material on how to repair tires, so let's move on to common myths and useful tips.

    Myth one

Installing a harness permanently damages the wheel

A powerful misconception, widely disseminated. Its proponents claim that the helical awl to prepare the hole "breaks the cords, thereby creating a weakened zone in the tire. "

This legend is refuted quite simply. Since it is opposed to “correct repair” in the form of installing a “mushroom” with wheel disassembly and subsequent balancing, one should refer to the documents of companies that produce “mushrooms” and the regulations for their use. In these documents, you can find out that the processing of the hole and thus the spiral awl (which is used as an indicator of the angle of the puncture channel with respect to the plane of the tire surface, which is important when installing the "fungus"), and even with a drill-cutter installed in the spindle of a low-speed pneumatic - or electric drills - these are frequent steps in the installation process of the "fungus"! That is, the same measures take place as during the installation of the flagellum, and often even more aggressive! This happens because the tire does not experience critical damage from the preparation of the hole by probing and reaming it, and the cord is either not damaged at all, or it is damaged negligibly little, which is covered by the safety margin of the tire. Yes, it is possible, on wheels with maximum speed indexes (which are operated at such speeds), and for cars operated in really sporty conditions in track conditions, even such minor changes in the structure of the tire make a difference. But for the majority of ordinary car owners, the conditional harm from a quick repair with a flagellum is no higher than the harm from a more complex and expensive repair with a “fungus” with wheel parsing.

    Myth two

Flagella are installed only with glue

The need to use special glue (it is also called “glue-activator”) when using the flagella repair method is a question on which many copies have been broken on the Internet, and the final answer has not been found ... The misunderstanding is mainly generated by the fact that both repair kits are sold, which are completed with a tube of glue, and kits without glue. Accordingly, in the instructions for the first, there is a clause on the use of glue, while the second does not. This could be attributed to different compositions of flagella, but the flagella are the same, the simplest butyl rubber ones.

In fact, the process of sealing a puncture with a butyl rubber band does not require glue for the so-called activation. The main role of glue here is not sealing, but lubricating. In the case of tires with high rigidity or a large thickness of the rubber-cord layer, even the strength of an adult male is often not enough to push the awl dry with a flagellum. The glue acts as a lubricant, and the flagellum enters the hole relatively easily.

In other words, the repair with flagella in the absence of glue is an absolutely working scheme. The main thing is to have enough hand strength - for summer tires with an elastic compound and for almost all winter tires, there is usually enough strength. If the flagellum does not enter, although you lean on the awl handle with all your strength and mass, lubrication is necessary.

    Myth #3

    Flagella are a temporary solution

There are countless rootless Asian manufacturers making tire repair flagella. But in their instructions you will not find a word that after you got home on a wheel plugged with a flagellum, you need to go to a tire shop to seal the puncture in a full-fledged way - from the inside, “fungus”, with a complete analysis of the wheel. But in the recommendations of major international brands that produce consumables for tire service, this can be surprisingly found. Actually, this information, pilfered over the Web, served as the source of the myth about the unreliability and temporary essence of flagellar repair.

This myth has no absolute technical justification. Of course, a full-fledged “fungus” repair guarantees a more stable result, but the flagellar method is also reliable enough that the wheel can last for years. The strength of such a patch does not degrade over time. And the cautious recommendation of large manufacturers of materials for tire repair is quite understandable: firstly, they are used to reinsuring themselves with or without reason, and secondly, they are interested in stimulating demand for the entire range of their products. According to the plan of their marketers, the car owner who punctured the wheel will first use the flagellum in the field, and then, returning to civilization, will pay for work and consumables at the tire fitting.

How to improve the DIY flagellum repair kit?

The classic field tire repair kit includes two awls with T-handles (preparatory spiral + working with an eye), as well as a “clip” of 5-10 flagella, protected during storage by plates stuck to them on both sides rigid polyethylene. However, even with such a set, you can suddenly find yourself in front of an unpleasant fact: the wheel cannot be repaired, even if you do it not for the first time and have the skills ... To make the set fully functional, you can slightly supplement and improve it.

First and most important: Seal the flagella with tape when storing. After about a year of storage in the trunk, the flagella lose their elasticity of the upper layer and, being installed in accordance with all the rules, poison the air. You need to store them by pasting them with ordinary tape on four sides of the standard protective film to isolate from the air. And even despite this, it’s not bad to refresh a set of flagella once a year, since they are not too expensive.

Second: put a half-liter PET bottle and an additional stopper with a small hole in the set. Pour antifreeze windshield washer fluid into a bottle and add half a teaspoon of dishwashing detergent. This "device" will allow you to find the place of air leakage through the soap suds, if the puncture is not detected by the naked eye. By shaking the bottle and screwing a cork with a hole on it, you can pour soapy liquid over the surface of the tire in search of bubbles. We use anti-freeze instead of water so that the solution retains its consistency in the cold.

Third. "Activator Glue", which was discussed above, is sometimes highly desirable - albeit not as an adhesive, but, as mentioned above, as a kind of lubricant. But even if it is present, an unpleasant surprise is not ruled out - it can dry out or leak out. If you do not have an "activator glue" or you are not sure of its condition, add a miniature container of gasoline to the kit, which can be used to moisten the flagellum if necessary.

Fourth. If you don't carry a utility tool chest with you, add small side cutters or a mini multi-tool with built-in pliers to your repair kit. Such a tool is necessary to extract from the puncture site what caused it.

Fifth. Add a small utility knife to the kit (a 9 mm narrow blade is enough) to trim the ends of the flagellum after it has been installed in the bar.

This "complemented and improved" set allows you to conveniently repair a tire with a tourniquet at any time of the year without outside help and loss of time.
