Mirror polished rims are a modern alternative to chrome plating. A comparison of the consumer characteristics of the two methods would be incomplete without a description of the very essence of the chromium plating process and the technologies that exist today.
The main reason for the popularity of such discs is the magnificent appearance and natural appeal of the metallic sheen. Cold, specular reflection attracts attention, looks stylish and expensive on cars of any manufacturer. Chrome completely protects the metal from water corrosion, it is used for tuning both automobile and motorcycle wheels.
New products are quite expensive, so the technology of restoring or coating stamped, cast and forged wheels is widely used.

Industrial chrome plating

Strictly speaking, any metal part, be it an interior handle or a body part, can be coated with a layer of chrome. In the automotive world, this tuning technology has been known for over 70 years, but in the 1990s, the use of classical methods was significantly reduced due to the recognition of hexavalent chromium as a carcinogen that can accumulate in air, soil and the human body.
Nevertheless, the technology as a whole remains one of the most popular ways to protect automotive parts from corrosion, adverse environmental effects and certain reagents. If you follow the rules for the care of chrome surfaces, they will serve for many years.

Basic modern chrome plating technologies and their features

All of the methods described below require some knowledge of chemical processes and the ability to handle chemicals, so trying them at home is not recommended. Each of the methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some can be replicated in the garage, others require special expensive equipment.

First of all, we will consider the methods of industrial chrome plating of disks that are currently used.
These include technologies:

• Vacuum;
• Diffusion;
• hot;
• Galvanic. It is used mainly in small industries.

Vacuum technology

The essence of the method is the use of vacuum for reliable connection of particles of two materials. The workpiece is placed in the chamber along with the reagent, which contains chromium. After the air is pumped out of the chamber, a negative pressure is created in it, and the reagent is heated to a temperature of 400-600 0C. As a result, chromium settles on the metal surface, reliably protecting it from corrosion.
The vacuum method is one of the most common today due to its versatility, minimal environmental impact, the absence of additional harmful compounds, as is the case with the galvanic method, and the ability to control the layer thickness and intensity of chromium deposition.
In vacuum chromium plating, a special layer of protective varnish is additionally applied to the surface.

Diffusion technology

Well suited for chrome plating of discs of any size, as well as large parts. It is used only in production conditions. The essence of the method is the heating of the base material and the chromium-containing reagent to high temperatures. Due to this, a diffusion exchange of molecules occurs and chromium penetrates into the metal structure to a certain depth. The coating becomes reliable and thick, well protects against corrosion.
The disadvantage of this method is only one - you need to monitor the change in the strength characteristics of the products. It is suitable for products for which high heat is not critical in terms of changing physical characteristics.

Hot technology

A very simple method requiring very sophisticated process equipment to control chromium consumption.
The disc is dipped into a bath of molten chromium, which forms a protective film on its surface. The penetration depth is usually less than with the vacuum and diffuse method, but the chromium layer is much larger. The technology itself is quite expensive and complex, so it is used only in large factories.

Galvanic method

The chromium plating method is the most common in small factories and factories, mainly in countries with mild environmental safety requirements.
The essence of the method:
The workpiece is lowered into the electrolyte solution formed by hydrochloric acid and a chromium-containing substance. Under the action of an electric current passing through the bath, free chromium is released from the solution and “joins” with the material of the product. Depending on the selected current parameters, a coating of a certain thickness and density is obtained.
The main advantage of galvanization is the excellent adhesion of chromium due to the formation of intermolecular bonds. This makes the protection effective and durable.
The main disadvantages of the method:

1. Destructive impact on the environment and the human body. Vapors of electrolyte and solutions formed as a result of an electric discharge poison the air. Since the mid-1990s, this method has hardly been used in Europe and the USA.
2. Galvanizing requires experience and responsibility, carefully checking the electrolyte and determining the correct proportions of the chromium solution.
3. Complexity of part preparation. Before processing, it must be washed and degreased with special means, avoiding contact with other substances and, preferably, with air.
4. Difficult to find the right settings for aluminum and steel stamped rims. The method is best suited for alloy wheels.
5. High cost method for production. To date, there are cheaper and simpler methods of applying chromium to the surface, so the method is almost never used for industrial purposes.

The following 2 methods are possible, but not recommended for domestic use. When performing such chrome plating, all safety regulations must be observed.

Chemical method

Chemical coating is carried out in a prepared bath with a solution of purified water and a special expensive chromium-containing reagent, as well as hypophosphite. In this case, a chemical reaction of the active substances with the metal surface of the pre-cleaned and degreased disk occurs. The formed chrome film will be quite thin, it is better to protect it with a special varnish.

To avoid an excessively thin layer, phosphorus can be added to the solution, which will make the layer stronger and tougher due to its penetrating ability.

Why can this method be used in everyday life?
Hydrochloric acid is not used here - there is no electrolysis process in which it is needed. The method is simpler and can be used at home, subject to certain safety rules. In particular, it is necessary to monitor the concentration of reagents and their interaction with each other.

Finished Coating

The easiest way to give a rim that characteristic chrome shine is to buy protective paint. One-component spray paints contain a lot of chromium in the form of an aerosol. Two-component paints are usually sold in cans and require the use of an airbrush or a special tool.
The safety rules are the same as when working with any car paint, so this chrome plating method is suitable for any home craftsman.
Of course, the paint layer in this case will be thinner and less reliable, it will not protect the part from corrosion in case of scratches and will be easily washed off by most aggressive reagents. But as an experiment, it is possible to apply such a coating on disks.

The use of powder chrome paint is limited by the sintering properties, which cannot achieve the same glossy sheen.

Basic care for chrome wheels

Proper care of any surface extends the life of the product by 1.5-4 times. Chrome wheels are no exception. It is important to understand that they require a thorough inspection once a month and the use of a certain cleaning technology. Otherwise, the beautiful glossy sheen will go away, and the base of the disk itself will begin to rust.

IMPORTANT!
All contamination from chrome surfaces must be removed only with specialized products.

These recommendations will help you enjoy the excellent appearance of chrome wheels for many years to come:

1. Wheels without mechanical damage or with light scratches should be washed every 2 weeks and cleaned with a special compound. After that, you need to use polish for chrome surfaces. Watch out for the use of cleaning agents - they should not contain acetone, salt or ammonia, as they are detrimental to this metal. Polish gives the disc a glossy sheen after cleaning.
2. Minor defects can be eliminated by grinding with finely ground chalk. After applying it to a napkin, it is worth rubbing it into the damaged areas and then covering it with a layer of colorless varnish. This will preserve the protective oxide film that appeared on the disc during chrome plating. If this is not done, the coating will continue to deteriorate over time.
3. It is better to wash discs with warm water with low pressure and more often than other parts of the vehicle. Make sure that there are no abrasive elements that destroy the chromium layer.
4. Dried dirt must first be soaked with warm water, let it stand for 10-15 minutes and carefully rinse with a soft cloth. Wipe the disc dry, otherwise scuffs and scratches will appear on it. A dry soft cloth will help to avoid micro-drops of moisture and re-adherence of dirt.
5. Wash residue can also be removed with a damp sponge. After that, the disc is rinsed with water and wiped dry with a soft cloth. The disc should be periodically washed not only outside, but also inside, since dirt, which often contains aggressive substances, damages the protective layer of the disc over time. Make sure that all auto chemicals used are intended for chrome surfaces.
6. Major damage can only be repaired with the wheel and tire removed. In this case, it will be possible to carry out a high-quality restoration of the chrome plated disk without the risk of damaging it.

If you follow the recommendations presented, chrome wheels will last up to several years, giving your car an exclusive, neat appearance.

Unfortunately, due to the widespread prohibition of electroplating chromium plating, most companies apply chromium imitation - spraying, covered with a protective varnish. Such a coating will be short-lived and will lose its attractiveness very quickly. In large cities, the wear resistance of chromium coatings is negatively affected by the road chemicals used.
