This pack includes a video walkthrough - see all of the brushes swatched & follow along with a tutorial here!

CHUNKY CHALK MARKER: A precise, smooth brushstroke with a smudged, charcoal-y, chalky texture. Super versatile - perfect for sketching, lettering, detail work, and filling in larger shapes. If I had to pick one holy grail brush out of my Procreate library, it would be this one!

FEATHERY SHADOW: Light and buildable, with a subtle paper grain texture and slightly feathered edges. Perfect for shading and adding washes of color.

SMOOTHIE SHADER: Solid, chunky, and tapered with a tiny bit of grain texture peppered in. Perfect for shading and solid fills.

SOFT ROLLER BRUSH: Thick and blocky, like a chunky paint roller. The ends have a soft, natural, textured fade. Perfect for hand-lettering and creating natural edges in illustrations.

COTTON FLUFF: A round brush with a really beautiful stucco-y texture and fuzzed out edges. Perfect for adding dimension and shadow. I also love using it as an eraser and blending out harsh edges!

HONEY & LEMON PAINT PEN (ANGLED & ROUND): Slightly transparent, wet, glaze-y realistic paint texture that builds and layers beautifully. Mixed with a subtle watercolor texture, so you can see a bit of grain within the brushstroke. The pack includes two versions of this brush: Angled, which has a crisper, more opaque edge and is perfect for lettering, and Round, which creates beautiful swirling, even brushstrokes.

SALT & PEP: Creates light, peppery sprays of paint drops. Mimics the effect of flicking a wet brush onto paper, down to the slight variations in the speckles of paint.

SPECKLED GLAZE: Fluffy, feathered layers of paint speckles that intensify color as you layer brushstrokes. Less pressure creates a salt and pepper-y glaze effect, while heavier pressure will build up to create a flour or snow-like effect.

MILKY WATERCOLOR: Creates a cloudy, creamy watercolor wash. Super buildable - you can easily layer light, watered-down washes to create vibrant, opaque layers. The edges also have some earthy, speckle-y details to ground the smoothness of the brushstrokes.

COLD PRESSED FILL: Full of earthy, gritty texture, overlaid with a scribbled pencil and speckled, seedy texture. Perfect for filling shapes with an organic, messy layered effect.

SEEDY VINTAGE PRINT: A varied, spotted line pattern with subtle ink bleeds to create an old, faded vintage print look. Perfect for textiles!

Please note: these brushes are developed for Procreate only! They are not compatible with Photoshop or Illustrator. You’ll get best results when used with an Apple Pencil.

There is a huge variety of makeup brushes. They are made of different materials, different shapes and sizes, and, of course, each has its own purpose. It is not surprising that for many it still remains a mystery which makeup brushes will be the best, which ones they actually need, which ones are intended for what and how to use them correctly. But if you figure it out, daily makeup will become much more diverse and interesting. Because many techniques (for example, the same contouring that is popular today) cannot be mastered without the right set of brushes.

Are you good at makeup products? Take the quiz below to find out.

Purpose and types of professional brushes

Brushes differ in several criteria at once. First of all, the separation takes place according to “areas of responsibility” - parts of the face on which they are recommended to be used: for the face, eyes, eyebrows, lips.

Also, all brushes are generally divided into two types - made of artificial bristles or natural.

The latter pair best with powdery dry textures. Artificial ones are necessary for applying and blending cream and liquid textures. Let's look at each category in detail.

FACE BRUSHES

How many brushes do you need to have to apply foundation? At least three: flat synthetic for foundation and two fluffy natural ones for blush and powder.

© nyxcosmetics

If we talk about the basic set of a professional makeup artist, then it includes many more brushes. Which? Read below.

Foundation

Foundation Brush Maestro Brush, Giorgio Armani © armanibeauty

This flat synthetic brush is popular with professional makeup artists and beginners alike. With its help, you can easily distribute the foundation as thinly as possible.

And more about how to apply foundation with a brush, we talked about in this video.

For Concealer

Concealer Brush Maestro Brush, Giorgio Armani © armanibeauty.com.ru

Similar to foundation brush, but several times smaller. As a rule, concealers have a denser texture and are more difficult to blend. Therefore, such a small flat synthetic brush is what you need to correct small imperfections on the face.

Powder brush

Moderately wide natural brush perfectly picks up powdery textures.

An important point: to set makeup, use patting movements with the brush, do not stretch it over the face - this will only “move” the foundation. You will learn more about the secrets of application from this video tutorial.

Blush Contouring

Kabuki Brush

EYE BRUSH

Do not forget to add at least two eyeshadow brushes to your basic cosmetic bag: one is useful for applying them, the second for blending. Each of them has a number of features, more about which you can read in this section.

Rounded Eyeshadow Brush

The rounded shape of this brush explains why it is often referred to as a barrel brush. It is ideal for blending shadows in the crease of the eyelid. This technique allows you to make the eyes visually more expressive.

Liner brush

Precise Eyeliner Brush, Urban Decay © urbandecay.ru

Fine, calligraphic-shaped synthetic bristle brush, just what the doctor ordered when you want to experiment with winged eyeliner. The width of the arrows depends on the intensity of the pressure. Also available with a beveled edge.

Blending brush

This fluffy brush allows you to create the desired "smoky" shading in no time. It should be used like this: when the main shades of the shadows are already applied to the eyelid, take a clean blending brush and walk along the borders of the colors, mixing them together.

EYEBROW BRUSH

Today wide, traced eyebrows are in fashion. Therefore, an eyebrow brush is a must have in any cosmetic bag. Before you start drawing hairs with a beveled flat brush, carefully comb your eyebrows. And then start filling with color.

Miscellaneous brushes

Above are examples of basic makeup brushes for those new to makeup. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more brushes - even for the same purpose, brushes can differ dramatically. Hair can be combined - artificial mixed with natural. This gives the brush more fluffiness and, accordingly, increases the chances of better shading.

  • Some makeup artists even prefer to spread the concealer with a brush made of only natural pile. In this case, it will be rounded, frankly fluffy and soft. She can have only one minus - natural hairs absorb the product, so the consumption of concealer will be greater.
  • For many, it remains a mystery what very flat fan-shaped makeup brushes are for. Those made from the minimum amount of hairs are almost weightless: they perfectly distribute the powder highlighter.

    © nyxcosmetics

The layer will turn out very thin, which will create the effect of highlighted skin. Fluffy fan brushes are good for applying powder, bronzer. By the way, we shared the secrets of applying the latter in this video.
  • Among the variety of brush shapes (oval, round, flat, beveled, etc.) it is important to understand their logic. Take the brush in your hands, touch it, try moving it along the back of your hand.

    © nyxcosmetics

It will immediately become clear that beveled ones are more suitable for a more graphic distribution of color. Round - for applying with fuzzy edges: for example, shadows, blush. Flat brushes apply color better, while fluffy brushes blend it.

    Materials for making brushes

In general, the materials from which make-up brushes are made can be divided into two groups - artificial and natural. Both have their own characteristics, pros and cons.

    Natural hair brushes

They are made from natural hairs of different animals. The most popular are hairs from the wool of a squirrel, goat or horse. Since the hairs are natural, their cuticle has the ability to pick up and absorb powder pigments and blend them on the face without a trace.

    © nyxcosmetics

For practice, natural brushes are ideal - they are as soft as possible, which means that they are more difficult to apply too much. When it comes to powder textures, natural brushes are your best bet for this purpose.

The main thing is to follow the example of the professionals and not press too hard on the brush. Light brush strokes are the guideline.

    Synthetic hair brushes

Synthetic brushes are typically made from a wide range of synthetic materials, from nylon to recycled materials. Such brushes are denser, they are easier to clean and do not absorb liquid and creamy textures. Accordingly, when using them, you will spend less money.

Basic makeup brush set: what brushes do beginners need

The following tools can be considered as a standard brush set.

    • Flat eyeshadow brush - for applying color.

      © nyxcosmetics

    • Blending Eyeshadow Brush - For soft edges or smoky eyes.

      © nyxcosmetics

    • Small slanted brush - good for drawing arrows or filling in eyebrows.
    • Powder brush - to set foundation, concealer and other cream textures on the face.

      © istock

    • Foundation brush is not a mandatory item, but it will come in handy if it is more convenient for you to distribute the tone with a brush. Many today prefer sponges for this purpose.

    • Angled blush brush - this can give the face a healthier look, as well as contour the volume.
    • Concealer brush - if you choose a flat one made of synthetic bristles, then here's a little life hack for you: you can also use it to draw lips.
    • Eyebrow brush - because without combed, lush eyebrows, there is nowhere now.

Makeup beginners should not immediately buy a huge professional set of brushes.

    © nyxcosmetics

First you need to figure out which brushes are more comfortable for you to do makeup, and this is largely learned only in the process of using them.

Beginners should definitely buy the following brushes - for powder, for blush, flat and fluffy for shadows, eyebrow brush.

Then everything depends on you. Do you love eyeliner? Then the eyeliner brush is your must-have. Or maybe you love drawing eyebrows? If you're a fan of brow shadow, get yourself a small, angled, natural brush.

    © Makeup.ru

If you prefer cream eyeshadows, an artificial flat brush with a flat or beveled edge will come in handy. Gradually, it will become clear to you what you are missing, and you will form your own basic set.

How to use makeup brushes? The main mistakes when using

It's not just beginners who make mistakes when using brushes. Let's take a look at the most common ones.

    1

You pick up concealer with a brush right out of the box

So, you have dark circles under your eyes and you want to get rid of them. And the first thing you do is pick up the concealer with a brush right out of the package? It is better to first take a small amount of concealer and lightly rub it with your finger on the back of your hand. So the dense formula will become more plastic - after that, already use a brush and apply the product under the eyes.

    2

You're using too big an eyeshadow blender

Many people think that buying a larger eyeshadow blender will get the most out of it because it often costs the same as a smaller one.

    © maybelline

But that's not entirely true: a small blending brush will give you the shadow effect you need to sculpt your eyelids. Too big a brush will give the impression that you have dirt in front of your eyes.

    © maybelline

    3

You are using a foundation brush that is too large.

The foundation brush should be flexible and slightly pointed. So, you can retouch all areas of the face, including the difficult area around and under the nose.

    © Makeup.ru

    4

You apply too much pressure when applying blush and bronzer

The lighter you apply the brush, the more natural the result will be. It is a mistake to think that the harder you press, the brighter the color will be. No, all that you will achieve in this way is a large color spot that cannot be blended.

    © Makeup.ru

All experienced makeup artists distribute blush easily, barely touching the face with the brush. Yes, they need a minute more time for this, but the result is worth it.

    5

You use the same brush for multiple products

Often a blush brush is used for both powder and bronzer. And also for the highlighter. Each of these tools needs its own brush - otherwise a combination of pigments is formed on the villi, and the color in the end will never turn out to be “clean”.

    © Makeup.ru

Now that you know about the main mistakes when using makeup brushes, it's time to figure out how to use them correctly.

Our instructional video will help you with this. Also, do not forget to study the instructions on how to use different makeup brushes for other purposes.

How to take care of brushes?

If you invest in good brushes made from proven materials, they can last for decades. One condition is that you must properly care for them: wash them in time, dry and store them properly.

    How to wash brushes?

    • When using brushes, particles of make-up, oils, dirt and even bacteria accumulate on the hairs. Therefore, if you do not wash your brushes on time, it can cause inflammation and clog pores.
    • To keep your brushes clean, get a spray cleaner - spray your brushes with it after each use. And once a week, wash them thoroughly with water and shampoo. There are brush cleaners on the market today, but you can actually use a good cleansing or just neutral baby shampoo for the same purpose.
    • You can also make your own special brush cleanser.
    • Brushes are best washed at room temperature. Moisten them with water first, then rinse thoroughly with shampoo. Rinse off the product until the water is clear.

    How to store brushes?

    • It's best to dry your brushes naturally: just lay them on a clean towel and they'll be as good as new in a couple of hours.
    • If you dry your brushes in a vertical position in a glass, there is a risk that the water, falling down from the bristles, will soak the glue that holds the handle and the top of the tool together. If you do this regularly, the brush will break very quickly. Therefore, dry them by laying them on a vertical surface.

    Brush Cleaner

Specialized brush cleaners are now popular with professional makeup artists and makeup lovers alike. Their types are different - from pressed, reminiscent of classic soap, to liquid like shampoo. Their compositions are made in such a way that they gently clean the bristles of the brushes, while carefully removing the remnants of makeup and bacteria.

    Accessories for brushes

Many brands offer special accessories that will come in handy when using makeup brushes. Their presence is not at all necessary, but in some cases it can make life much easier. For example, NYX Professional Makeup has a special brush cleaning rubber mat that is very easy to use. Apply a little cleanser to the mat and rub the brush on its surface, then rinse thoroughly with water. The same brand produces a handbag in which it is convenient to store and transport brushes.

The Japanese brand Shu Uemura has a brush case, shaped like the pencil case professional artists carry.

Other options for storing brushes at home are detailed in this article.

How to choose the right makeup brushes

Makeup brushes are used not only by makeup artists. To understand which tool to put in your home cosmetic bag, you should understand their varieties and purpose.

    Hair type: Synthetic and natural

In terms of quality, modern synthetic brushes are not inferior to natural ones, and synthetic bristles cope with some tasks even more efficiently.

With a synthetic brush, it is convenient to apply liquid and cream textures: foundation, concealer, lipstick, cream eyebrow and eye shadow. It is distributed evenly, without streaks and clear boundaries. Brushes do not cause allergies and are cheaper.

Natural bristle hair is porous in structure and covered with small scales that absorb the product. This helps to blend makeup softer and more carefully. According to tactile sensations, the brush made of squirrel is the most pleasant: the hair is thin, soft and long. The powder lays down evenly and is economically consumed. Pony brushes are also soft and pleasant, but the texture is denser than that of a squirrel. Goat hair is harsh, but the brush from it is very voluminous and lush. Natural brushes come in several types of bristles and are suitable for dry textures.

    Assembly method: Sewn and glued

The bristles of the glued brush are attached to the glue. This type of assembly is the most fragile, but reduces the price. However, you should be prepared for the fact that the brush will not last long, it will soon begin to crumble and shaggy. In a stitched brush, the villi are sewn together with a thread of hair. They sit firmly and do not fall out.

    Hair treatment: Cut and stacked

Type-setting brushes are assembled by hand, hair by hair, leaving the tips natural. The contour is soft, smooth, without sharp transitions. This brush glides smoothly over the skin and acts very delicately.

In a clipped brush, the pile is not picked up in length, but cut off along the contour after assembly. The form is modeled depending on the purpose. A brush with a cut edge is harder to the touch, it can be prickly and can damage the structure of the product.

    Purpose:

There are many types of brushes. But for professional and even more so for everyday makeup, it is not necessary to have all types or even half. It is enough to select for yourself a set of convenient tools that are comfortable to use.

    Foundation brushes:

    1. Duofiber brush. Blend of synthetic and natural bristles. It does not absorb the product inside, gently distributes it over the skin.
    2. Round brush. Fully padded with synthetic bristles. Due to its density, the brush drives creamy textures well.
    3. Tongue brush. Classic flat brush.
    4. Notched brush. With a recess in the middle that serves as a reservoir for foundation. If you press harder, the product is squeezed out, and the tone is applied more intensely.
    5. Blending brush. Similar to a large toothbrush or clothes brush. It is convenient to shade the tone and smooth the borders with it.

    Powder brushes:

    1. Kabuki brush. Stuffed pile, short stem. The handle is small, not so that it fits compactly into a cosmetic bag and takes up less space. The short stem allows you to grab the tool as close to the pile as possible, thereby helping to strengthen the pressure. Therefore, with a kabuki brush, you can not only powder, but also apply blush, bronzer or foundation.
    2. Domed or classic flat cut. Natural or soft artificial bristles, 2-3 cm long.
    3. Fan brush. Removes excess blush, brushes away crumbled shadows. Good for highlighter.

    Blush and bronzer brushes:

Similar to powder, but with a shorter pile - synthetic or natural. The shape is round with a smooth cut, or beveled.

    Eyeshadow brushes:

A great variety of brush shapes are found in eye makeup. The reason for this is all kinds of textures and different makeup techniques.

    1. Synthetic bristle brush is suitable for cream eyeshadows and bases.
    2. Soft natural brush with an angled shape or with a rounded cut perfectly blends shadows on the eyelid.
    3. Angled synthetic brush is used for eyebrow makeup. The pile is harder, suitable for drawing arrows with liquid or cream eyeliner.
    4. Curved eyeliner brush. The curved handle fits comfortably in the hand and allows neat hand drawing.

How to care for makeup brushes

After each use, the remnants of the product collect in the bristle of the brush. A convenient place is formed for the accumulation of bacteria, which then from the same brush fall on the skin of the face, provoking acne and inflammation. Dried dirt in the villi worsens the condition of the skin and harms the brush itself. The elasticity of the bristles is broken, the brush becomes stiff, inflexible and poorly blends cosmetics.

To prevent problems with the skin and pile of the brush, it must be looked after like an orchid in a pot. But with orchids it is more difficult, but here it is worth remembering just a few rules:

    1. Natural brushes for powders, blushes and dry bronzers need to be cleaned once a month - frequent washing can damage the bristles. You need to take care of natural pile just as carefully as hair. You can take shampoo, make-up artists recommend children's. Do not lather the head of the brush like you would hair. Dilute the product in water, rinse the brush in it, rinse with clean water.
    2. Brushes for tone and any other liquid or cream textures are best washed once a week if you use them alone. The pile is synthetic and absorbs heavy greasy textures. Therefore, it is not necessary to be gentle in cleansing: you can wash with soap, shampoo or eco-friendly dishwashing detergent. Most importantly, rinse thoroughly with water. The tool will properly clean the oily base of the foundation from the pile.
