Bicycle rims ⵙ Review from MOYBIKE

The need to choose certain rims (or as they are also called, rims) for your bike does not arise very often. The problem of choice arises when buying a new or not very new bike, but more often, in the case of replacing old rims or wheels with new ones, when they do not suit you for some reason or are simply very worn out (eights, cracks, rubbing brake tracks). However, the choice of rims should be taken seriously, taking into account the intended style of operation of the bike. The requirement for a rim is that the rim should be as light as possible while still being strong enough. Of course, the strength of the wheel is determined not only by the strength and rigidity of the rim, but also by the quality of the spokes, their number, strength and uniformity of tension. But without a good rim, it is impossible to assemble a durable wheel. And the constant editing of the “eights” is below average pleasure. nine0003

Why wheels need to be strong is understandable, but why should they be very light? When accelerating a bicycle, the cyclist's forces are spent not only on increasing the linear speed of the bicycle in general and the wheels in particular, but also on increasing the rotation speed (spin) of the wheels. And the farther from the center of rotation is the mass and the larger it is, the more work has to be spent on spinning up. This is especially noticeable in those sports where the speed of movement is constantly changing to large values. For example, in cross-country competitions and similar disciplines, the weight of the rim and tire affects much more than in flat road racing. Active movement around the city also has a rather “torn” rhythm, and given the quality of many streets in Russian cities, the requirement for high wheel strength becomes clear. nine0003

1. Materials.

  • Aluminum alloy is the most widely used material and provides the best combination of price, strength and weight.
  • Maxtal is Mavic's signature alloy and is highly rigid. Such a rim is difficult to bend, but the rim becomes sensitive to metal fatigue.
  • Steel - very heavy weight, almost never used on modern bikes.
  • Carbon - used in very light and very expensive road and cross country rims. nine0012

2. Design features.

Rim design can vary considerably depending on the type of bike. Most bicycles now use box-section rims that are designed to use bead tires. Their side walls are well developed and have a groove on the inside, into which the tire bead is inserted during installation. The inflated tire is distributed to the sides by the air pressure in the chamber and with its sides clings to the rim walls, tightly pressing against it. Tires for road bikes (tubes, monotubes) are glued to the rim through a special cloth tape: the rims for them do not have developed walls on the inside, but rather flat enough, have a tubular section. True, at this stage, clincher tires (the so-called clinchers) began to be used on road bikes, which have a traditional design (a chamber and a light, narrow high-pressure tire with a bead). To fasten the rim into a ring, butt welding is usually used. nine0003

Since at the moment mountain and all-terrain bicycles are the most widespread in Russia, and hybrids are becoming more and more popular, it is worth dwelling a little more on the features of classic box-section rims. In addition to different rim sizes, the products of many manufacturers are divided into groups. Moreover, the rims are divided both for different types of bicycles, and for different applications for the same type. This is especially true for mountain bikes. For example, according to strength parameters, they can be divided into walking, cross-country, freeride and downhill. Such a division, of course, is very arbitrary, no one prevents you from racing in cross-country on downhill rims, but it allows you to approximately estimate the weight and strength of the rims, as well as some other design features listed below. nine0003

3. Single wall and multi wall rims.

The simplest rims (walking) are usually made single-walled, that is, the profile of such a rim is similar to the letter "U". ), in which a horizontal jumper is added in the middle of the "U". This profile is usually found on mid- to high-end rims, although there has been a recent trend towards installing low-cost modifications on relatively cheap mountain bikes and not only mountain bikes. If a rim with greater strength is needed, then a rim with a high profile is used: due to its use, the rigidity and strength of the rim “folding” are significantly increased. This rim is less afraid of bumps and pits on the road or race track. The most advanced version of the rim is the three-wall rim, when a third horizontal bridge is inserted into the high-profile rim. The role of this jumper is not so much to increase the rigidity of the “folding” of the rim, but to increase the lateral rigidity, which prevents the appearance of eights, and can also prevent the “collapse” of the rim by brake pads. Such rims are very rare. Rims for relatively easy use, for example, cross-country, are made quite narrow - the outer size is 21-26 mm. Rims for freeride, and even more so for downhill, can be much wider, up to 35 mm or more. With an increase in the width of the rim, its transverse rigidity also increases markedly. nine0003

4. Methods for increasing the strength and reducing the weight of a bicycle rim.

For additional hardening of the rims, surface saturation with other substances by galvanic method is used - anodizing. The surface of anodized aluminum rims is not light, but black. Often the same rim model can have both a regular modification and an anodized one, which costs 10-20% more.

A strong wheel can be assembled using, for example, thick or simply high quality spokes. But the essence of their application is the possibility of a high pre-tension of the spokes, when the payload is distributed more evenly over the spokes. But there are cases when, when hitting large bumps, the spokes pulled out of the aluminum rims. To strengthen the surface of the rim in the area of the spoke hole, washers were sometimes placed under the heads of the spoke nipples. Now, on many rims, inserts, the so-called caps, are installed in the hole, which also facilitate the rotation of the nipples when assembling the wheel and editing it. In double-walled rims, both conventional caps can be installed on the outer wall, as well as double caps, passing through both walls. nine0003

In the past, the standard wheel for most bicycles was 36 spokes. Larger numbers were rare, and fewer (32, 28, 24) only on road bikes and bikes with small wheels. Now, with the advent of high-quality and durable spokes and rigid rims, the problem of broken spokes is no longer so relevant, for a more or less advanced mountain bike, 32 spokes per wheel has become the standard. In the case of using a radial spoke set, the number of spokes can be even less. When assembling the wheel, make sure according to the number of spoke holes in the rim and hub .

5. Other design features of bicycle rims.

Recently, rims with offset rows of holes for the spokes began to appear. These rims are only for the rear wheels of multi-speed bikes. The fact is that due to the use of cassettes with a large number of sprockets in multi-speed bushings, it is necessary to shift the right flange of the bushing to its center, and the spoke umbrella on the right turns out to be flatter than on the left. To achieve this, the right spokes have to be pulled much tighter than the left ones. Thus, either the spokes of the right side become overtightened, or the left side undertightened. To reduce this effect, rims with rows of holes shifted by 2-3 mm to the left are used. nine0003

Three types of nipples are currently used in bicycles: car/motorcycle (Schrader), bicycle (Dunlop) and sports (Presta). The diameter of the "nipple" of the nipple in the first two types is larger, in the third it is smaller. Since Presta nipples are now becoming more widespread, rims are increasingly being made for them. To mount a regular nipple tube on such a rim, hole must be drilled , although it is better to use replacement tubes of the appropriate type. If your bike has high profile rims, you will need to have spare tubes with long nipples . In some rims, the spokes are mounted not on the outer wall of the rim, but on the inner one, which leads to the need to use spokes with long nipples.

Sidewall thinning is often used to lighten rims, which are relatively lightly loaded. In combination with the use of powerful V-brakes, this often leads to the fact that the side walls in the area of \u200b\u200bthe brake tracks are quickly wiped out by the brake pads: it is not uncommon for the rim to “kill” in a couple of seasons of operation. The way out of this situation was the use of disc brakes. Rims designed for use with disc brakes do not have brake tracks at all and therefore cannot be used with rim brakes. nine0003

6. Manufacturers of rims for bicycles

The most common manufacturers of rims are:

Alex Rims

One of the largest OEMs, a new mid-range bike is likely to have Alex rims even if they are labeled with a different brand ( typically a "home-made" brand of the bike manufacturer). In general, they are considered a good choice for their money.

DT Swiss

Above average to very high quality rims. The letters in the name (for example, EXC400) indicate the purpose and features of the rim (X - cross-country, M - trail, E - enduro, F - freeride, R - light racing rim, C - carbon rim). The numbers indicate the approximate weight in grams. The lighter rims in the series have a welded joint and are much more expensive. Almost all rims are only compatible with discs. nine0003

Mach 1

Very good quality French rims, considered a good value for money.

Mavic

One of the most common rims in retail, very common on self-assembly wheels. There are models from low to high levels, for almost all classes of bicycles.
The letters in the name (for example, XM317) indicate the purpose of the rim (XC - cross-country, XM - trail, EN - enduro, EX - extreme sports, TN - niner, A - hybrid). The first digit indicates the class of the rim: 1 - the cheapest, without caps; 3 - medium level, piston; 7 - high level, pistoned and welded, Maxtal alloy, 8 - high level, tubeless (UST), Maxtal alloy. The second and third digits indicate the inner width of the rim. nine0003

7. Pistoning of rims

To combat the pulling out of the spoke nipples from the rim due to the fatigue failure of the holes, metal inserts (eyelets) are used in the outer wall of the rim, distributing the load from the spoke over a larger area of the rim wall. This technology is used in almost all mid-level rims. There are separate models of rims with double pistons, where the piston connects both walls.
Racing rims sometimes use local hardening of the rim walls by additional machining instead of pistoning. There are also threaded caps that are screwed into the outer wall of the rim, while the inner wall is not drilled, which makes the rim compatible with tubeless tires without modification. nine0003

8. Classification of bicycle rims

There is a great variety of tire fit diameters expressed in different measurement systems. To the uninitiated, this variety is confusing, especially when you consider that, for example, 28 x 2. 00 and 29 x 2.00 tires are compatible, while 26 x 1.75 and 26 x 1 3/4 are incompatible.

There are three ways to designate the seat size:

  • ISO size (formerly ETRTO) - e.g. 622 mm . This is the true rim/tire fit size, unlike all the others. If you have any questions about the compatibility of tire and rim data, you should refer to the ISO size.
  • Inch size - Roughly characterizes the outer diameter of the tire. It has two incompatible varieties:
    • with decimal tire thickness - e.g. 26 x 1.75 ;
    • with bar thickness in common fractions - e.g. 26 x 1 3/4 ;
    • , Russian / Soviet bicycles generally use their own inch marking, which does not always coincide with the traditional one.
  • French size - for example 700С , - roughly characterizes the outer diameter of the tire in millimeters, taking into account the thickness of the tire itself (which is indicated by the letter): "A" - narrow, "D" - wide.

The table shows the known mounting dimensions and their relationship to each other:

The most common bores according to ISO are 559 mm (26″) and 622 mm (28, 29″). In small size road bikes and mountain bikes, the 650B standard is slowly gaining popularity. Teenage and extreme bikes sometimes use 507mm (24″). Folding and kids bikes use 305mm (16″), 355mm (18″), 406mm (20″).

Other sizes

Rim width

The width of the rim affects its strength and weight. Also, depending on the width, the recommended tire thicknesses are selected: a tire that is too wide for a given rim can break in corners and even fly off, while a tire that is too narrow will have a low profile and can be easily pierced.

Typically rims are marked by internal width according to ISO:

  • 15 mm or less - road, cyclocross;
  • 17 mm - light cross-country and hybrid; nine0012
  • 19 mm - heavy cross-country and hybrid;
  • 21 mm - often used in cycling and for light extreme sports;
  • 23 mm or more - for extreme sports.

Some manufacturers label rims according to the outside width. The difference between the widths is about 5-7 mm.

Tire and Rim Width Relationship

The table shows the values recommended by Mavic.

21 mm 2.0…2.5″ 4.3…3.0 bar
23 mm or more 2.3…3.0″ 3.3…2.2 bar
ERD and OSB

You need to know these parameters to select spokes when assembling a wheel. As a rule, they are given in the documentation for the rim.

  • ERD (eng. effective rim diameter ) - effective rim diameter, calculated between the ends of opposite spokes.
  • OSB (eng. offset of spoke bed ) - transverse offset of holes for spokes. Equal to zero for symmetrical rims. nine0012

Compatible with rim brakes

Unless otherwise noted, rims are generally compatible with rim brakes. However, there are exceptions: for example, all DT Swiss MTB rims, except for the XR425, are only compatible with hub brakes (disc or drum).

Models for rim brakes have flat brake tracks on the sidewalls and the walls are suitably reinforced. Of course, such a rim can also be used with brakes on the hub. Expensive rims have ceramic-coated brake tracks that greatly improve brake performance. Models not compatible with rim brakes are usually identified by the word Disc do not have brake tracks and are usually somewhat more expensive and lighter.

By number of spoke holes

On 559 and 622 mm retail rims, 28, 32 and 36 spoke holes are most common. Rims in factory wheelsets usually have fewer holes.

9. How to choose a rim for bicycles?

The choice of rims in the modern bicycle market is huge, there is plenty to choose from and what to choose from. How not to get lost? A few simple steps. This manual is aimed at cyclists who do not have enough experience and knowledge in cycling equipment, professionals do not need advice, as well as experienced amateurs. nine0003

First of all, decide whether the weight of the rim, its survivability, appearance and the number of banknotes that you are willing to give are important to you.

2 step

You need a double aluminum rim of course, don't look at the others. The higher the profile of the rim, the better it holds frontal impacts, the wider the rim, the greater its torsional rigidity.
Usually street and freeride rims have a fairly high profile and decent width. There are enough hits from all sides. In street and trial, box-section rims are more commonly used. nine0003

3 step

Cross country rims don't have to be extremely strong, weight is king, the lighter the better. All within reason, of course.

4 step

You might want to try tubeless rims, wheels assembled on these are lighter on the weight of the tube, such a wheel is harder to puncture.

5 step

And there is also a stritets :) the wider and more brutal the better! Sun rims DoubleTrack and DoubleWide. Others are simply swept aside!

6step

Sun rims S-type MTX and simply MTX rims are very popular in street, downhill and freeride. They are quite light and durable. Trial rims are the widest and lightest, DX32 from the same Sun Rims is not too light, but strong and wide. After a little refinement - drilling, they become the best budget solution. There are of course specialized trial rims, but they cost different money.
The Mavic DeeMax and CrossMax tubeless have been successful. Uniquely yellow and uniquely cool. The price is appropriate :)

And finally, a video about how these same rims are easy to break:

Articles about technical information and tire characteristics

Wheels are an important automotive unit that ensures a reliable connection of a car with the road surface through tires.

Wheel rims are an important vehicle component that provides a reliable connection between the car and the road surface through tires. In case of severe wear, as well as in the event of a crack or deformation of the spokes, it is necessary to replace the set. To choose a model, you need to know the mounting parameters. In addition to size, the number of holes and bolt patterns, and the diameter of the rim, there are several important designations that affect driving safety and the durability of a car's suspension. nine0003

If the tire wears quickly, the car reacts badly to the steering wheel, accelerates poorly, or vibrates when driving at high speed, the problem lies in the alloy wheels. Changes in the behavior of a passenger car appear immediately after the installation of wheels that do not correspond to the class of the car. To avoid getting caught with this, refer to the information on the rim. Marking for passenger cars, as well as the recommendations of the automaker, will help you choose alloy wheels with ease. However, it should be borne in mind that the transcript must comply with European standards and comply with the UN/ECE 124 prescription.

Where is the marking of car rims

Regardless of the manufacturer, production method, material or type of wheels, rims are always marked. It is not difficult to find these values, since they are placed on the surface itself. They are indicated from the outside and from the inside. The only exception is the inner side of the rim - the marking is not placed here, since it will be impossible to read when the tire is on.

On different models, manufacturers put the designation in different places. More often, the markings can be seen in the free area near the bolt holes that are used to attach the wheel to the hub of the car. Information about the characteristics is also placed on the rim on the front side. This designation is found in European manufacturers. nine0003

However, it is not enough to find markings. It is important to understand these symbols in order to fit a standard wheel or buy a model with other sizes. Decoding for cars is divided into several types, so let's take a closer look at each option.

Standard rim marking

Wheel rims are marked with a special abbreviation that is easy to read if you know the meaning of the symbols. The specified parameters are the same for all manufacturers, they are used to designate cast and forged models. The marking is not divided into the type of car, since it is the same for all cars. To understand the decoding, let's take the following example - car wheels with a size of 6.5J x 15 h3 5/112 ET39d57.1, where each character is responsible for its own parameters.

Rim Width or Rim Width

The value of 6.5, measured in inches, determines the distance that lies between the edge of the rim. It should be borne in mind that tires differ in the permitted range of rim widths. You can choose the size in the case of the closest approximation to the center of the allowable range. If this parameter is not taken into account, rubber replacement may not work. The tire will jump off when beading or, if beading is successful, will quickly deform. nine0003

Flange or edge type

Identified with the letter "J". The type of edge differs in the height and inclination of the shelves, radius, design, and profile shape. Despite the presence of various indicators, the letters "J" and "JJ" are more common. In the first case, the parameters for cars with a single drive are shown, the second value is used for marking all-wheel drive models. This designation affects the quality of installation of tires, the load index, as well as the resistance to displacement. For safe driving, the wheels of the car must match the recommendations of the car manufacturers. nine0003

Rim separability

One-piece wheel rim is indicated by the symbol "x", if there are several components, the symbol "-" is used. If different components are used, then such wheels can be disassembled into parts or a new model can be assembled from different components. However, it should be borne in mind that the strength of monolithic structures is much higher. They withstand high loads, are ready for strong impacts and are less deformed if they fall into a pit. nine0003

Automotive rim marked with "x" is suitable for cars and light trucks that use flexible tyres. It is not recommended to install such models on heavy trucks. Rigid tires, beaded on a rim with several parts, are suitable for their use.

Rim Diameter or mounting diameter

The subsequent figure "15" determines the indicator of the landing rim for tires, which is marked by manufacturers in inches. The “popular” name used by motorists also has a meaning - the radius of the wheel. This information must be observed when buying rubber. If the parameters do not match, the tire will not fit into place. nine0003

Hump or hump

They are also called humps and are designated "H2". They represent an annular protrusion, which is located on different sides of the cast disk and is designed to install tubeless tires on it. Humps play an important role in the assembly of the wheel, as they prevent air from entering the inside under heavy loads while riding. On cars, there are one-sided and two-sided options, as well as Khanty with a flat shape and asymmetric.

Pitch Circle Diameter or location of mounting holes

Let's consider the value "5/112" as an example. Its interpretation indicates the location of the holes (bolt pattern), which is used to mount the wheel to the hub of the car. Here "5" is the number of bolts required for fixing, "112" is the diameter and circumference of their location. On passenger cars, there are 4-6 holes, the standard diameter parameters are from 98 to 140 mm.
