Beads tire balancing

FAQ | Counteract Balancing Beads

What Makes Counteract Different?

Counteract is the ONLY balancing product on the market proven to improve fuel economy in two separate S.A.E and TMC type II tests. We were the first to market 100% glass beads for balancing. Don't be fooled by competitive claims, Counteract's technology makes it the most technologically advanced system on the market today.

How much Counteract do I need?

The amount of Counteract needed is determined by the vehicle and the tire size, and in some cases the aggressiveness of the tread. Try our handy calculator to find out exactly what is recommended for your tire.

Does Counteract void tire warranties?

No, Counteract does not void any tire warranties. Due to our advanced technology Counteract does not harm the inside of a tire, once removing Counteract from a tire you would never know it was inside. Warranties are only voided if the internal balancer has caused harm to the interior of the tire carcass, or you can tell that something was installed inside the tire. None of these happen using Counteract.

Can You Put Too Many Balancing Beads in a Tire?

Having too many beads inside the tire in some cases can cause a slight imbalance. This is a concern on smaller tires where there is not as much room in the tire cavity for the beads to evenly spread themselves where they need to be. When there is too much, it can create a "traffic jam" where the excess beads get forced into the wrong balance position creating an imbalance. There is certainly an ideal amount of product to have inside the tires, as directed by our application charts. The smaller the tire, we need to be precise, the larger the tire, such as commercial tires or off-road tires there is much more room to allow for extra product without hindering the performance. We will always recommend referencing from our chart, and we always remind customers to make sure they are referencing the proper chart as we do have specific charts for specific applications.

Is Counteract re-usable?

Yes, Counteract is re-usable. However, you must be careful when re-using the product. When we manufacture our product it goes through a special decontamination and cleansing process. When you re-use it you could lose some beads or contaminate them which could cause the product to not work as effectively. For the price and extended tire life you receive using Counteract it makes sense to put in fresh product.

Is your Truck product the same as the Motorcycle?

No, our truck beads and our motorcycle beads are different. They go through different refining process and are manufactured differently. Motorcycle tires are different then truck tires, so are our beads. If you use the truck beads in a motorcycle we will not honor any warranty claims or support any issues that may arise.

Will the product react to any known materials?

No, Counteract Balancing Beads will not react with any known metal or materials.

Can you balance a tire with Counteract on a tire balance machine?

No. The Counteract Balancing Beads will only move to the balanced position through inertia generated by the out of balance condition of the complete wheel assembly and the up and down motion of the vehicle suspension.

Can I use Counteract Balancing Beads when I have another balancing product installed?

It is not advised to combine other internal balancing agents or balancing rings with Counteract Balancing Beads.  It is recommended that all other types of balancing be removed so as not to hamper Counteract Balancing Beads  from balancing the wheel assembly properly.

I have heard internal balancing heats up the tire? Is this true?

Counteract Balancing Beadshas proven that we allow tires to run 30 degrees cooler than a traditional spin balance, and 60 degrees cooler another popular internal balancer. Counteract actually keeps your tires running cooler, helping eliminate thermal degradation and irregular wear.

Can I use beads in conjunction with weights?

No, you should not combine weights with the use of internal balancers. The reason being is they work against each other. If you have a balance issue, you only need Counteract.

I have a internal tire pressure monitoring system will your beads damage them?

Counteract is 100% TPMS compatible. Counteract can and should not be injected through the valve stem if it has TPMS sensors, in this case you must install the product while the tire is broken or while being mounted.

I installed the beads, but I still have a vibration?

Counteract is a balancing product. If there is an imbalance with your tires Counteract will remedy the problem. However, no balancing product can fix a bad tire, bent rim or mechanical problem.  If you need help troubleshooting a vibration issue, please feel free to submit this troubleshooting form and we'll contact you to help resolve your issue. Can I use Balancing Beads in car tires?

Counteract does not recommend the use of internal balancing products in most automobile tires (the exception being classic cars). For a detailed explanation click here

Will Counteract fix vibrations on a vehicle with a lift kit?

When you put a lift kit on a vehicle, it changes the angle of the driveshaft, rendering the driveshaft itself unbalanced. This can cause the vibrations that are sometimes mistaken for tire balance vibrations. No matter what you do to balance your tires in this situation, it won't eliminate the driveshaft vibration. To learn more, check out this article by 4WheelParts Click here

I used the recommended amount and still have issues, what could be going wrong?

Our application charts are based on a stock vehicle with stock wheels and no modifications. In many cases, when a vehicle is modified it changes the dynamics and drive-ability of that vehicle. In those instances, our recommended amount may, or may not be enough to compensate for the tire imbalances. It is also to be noted that when a vehicle has aftermarket wheels, lift kits or other aftermarket components, there are many more possibilities for vibration that may not be tire balance related. Counteract will balance a tire, wheel and its entire rotating assembly. It will not fix an alignment issue, driveshaft imbalance, or harmonic vibrations from an aggressive tire tread.

Do Counteract Balancing Beads clump due to moisture?

No, Ambient moisture does not affect the product's performance, this is due to our special coating.

Will the product breakdown over time?

Counteract Balancing Beads are made of recycled tempered glass and do not break down when used in tires, the evidence of this is in millions of applications sold since introduction in 1997. Not one case of this problem has ever been reported.

How do I remove the product from the tire?

Counteract Balancing Beads are easy to remove. The simplest way is to use the Counteract Air Powered Bead Vacuum which allows you to quickly vacuum beads out of a tire, avoiding messy spills. Alternatively you can sweep the beads into a pile inside the tire and scoop them out. Always be careful not to spill the beads onto your work surface.

Do you need a valve filter to prevent the valve from clogging?

<pValve clogging is not a common problem with Counteract Balancing Beads and is usually the result of dust (we remove all dust at the manufacturing stage). A valve filter may help but can also slow down air flow or become clogged itself by dust, making it difficult to check air pressure. To address this situation the beads are selected by size and put through multiple screening and dusting processes. To reduce the possibility of a valve leak, it is recommended to use a Counteract Valve Core and self sealing valve cap (supplied in every package).

Why not sell bulk pails?

The reason we do not sell bulk pails of Counteract is due to multiple issues. If we have shop users weighing out their own beads and putting them in tires, we cannot guarantee that their scale or scoop is accurate to our required tire size measurements. We package the bags individually for specific tire sizes so that there are no issues.   It allows us to have control over what is being installed into the tire, therefore we will help with any support needed. If you weigh your own, you’re on your own and we are not responsible if anything goes wrong. Also, as mentioned before, our product has a special decontamination and cleaning process, if users weigh out their own they can contaminate the product and cause issues.

Can I use Counteract with tire slime and sealants?

No, Counteract is not compatible with any tire sealant or slime. Do not combine these products.

FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!!

*****

The Story: Modded my chunky 1800cc cruiser with a non-standard phatty front tire for personal comfort, handling and style reasons. Came back from the garage with CRAZY out-of-balance vibrations at most speeds, becoming *dangerously* wild at highway speeds. Didn't want to take it back to the garage who balanced it as they already didn't like the idea of the non-standard tire (which was approved in writing by the tire manufacturer, in addition to many dozens of personal reviews. ..), so I chose not to engage that battle with the garage and after some research went with these beads instead. Removed all the weights on front *and* back wheels, installed the beads per instructions (eZpZ - just a bit of patience and about 10mins per tire - recommend using a bike lift to hold it while loading), pumped the tires back to proper pressure and have put about 1000kms on them since - HOLY COW!! Like NIGHT and DAY compared to what must have been *wildly* incorrect weights applied by the garage. Plus, now I don't have any unsightly weights on my rims. Beads work AWESOME - smooth as silk, no noticeable "start off" unbalance feel whatsoever (they claim static holds them in place for brief stops). HIGHLY recommended - wish I did them from Day 1. Enjoy.

Flawless long term dynamic tire balancing product

*****

I've been using Counteract Balance Beads for yearson a 2004 Yamaha FZ6 (for approximately 60,000 km and 3 or 4 sets of tires), a friend's Honda NC700x, and now I'm also using them in a 2012 Yamaha WR250R (tubed motorcycle). I believe that they increase the life of the tire - and of special note my front tires don't cup anymore either. No feeling of 'out of balance' ever from installation (which I do myself) to the end-of-life removal of the tire. FWIW, if you get a puncture, don't use a 'slime' type product as then the beads will not be able to move to the light spots in the tire anymore. You can't throw a balance bead like you can a weight, and they're easier on the rim too. They're much easier to use than trying to balance perfectly with weights as well. I also reuse them when I change tires.

No more vibrations

*****

After lacing a new rim on my bike, I had a vibration at around 60. Tried putting some balance beads into the existing tube, but that didn't quite get rid of the shake. I decided to try this tube with beads already in it, and that fixed it! Going to get one for the rear soon.

QUALITY TUBE

*****

It doesn't really cost any more than a standard tube + Counteract beads, and having the beads already in the tube makes the job easier (unless you have really balance poor knobbies like Dunlop 606's ... then maybe you'll need more beads in the tube). The tube itself feels like a quality product and the valve looks to be of high quality too. I'm using this one on a 2012 Yamaha WR250R. Future Ready-balance tubes will get used on a 1999 BMW F650 and on the rear of the WR as well. Southeast Steve · Review provided by fortnine.ca

EXCELLENT PRODUCT

*****

I checked this product out on line, was a little skeptical at first, but watched a few videos and read the reviews from other sites. Since removing the stick on weights and adding the beads the difference has been incredible. Very smooth all vibration is gone, I highly recommend this product and am now considering purchasing more and using them on my car as well. I recommend them to all my bike riding friends.

Followed the instructions exactly and they worked!

*****

Read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere that claimed this was a long process, didn't work, junk, etc.. Well I read the instructions and installed the beads EXACTLY like the instructions said. Pouring a little at a time down the valves was the main point to follow. It took a total of maybe 5 minutes per wheel to do. To me this was just an experiment as I already have a wheel balancing machine and have balanced many wheels in the past. A bonus is no weights to fly off or get knocked off. Chanced tires and tubes, filled up with beads and took off. ZERO issues with wobbles or air leakage. My days of balancing motorcycle tires are over. A bonus feature: If you keep a kit in your roadside emergency repair kit you can balance your tire while doing a roadside repair.

good alternative for wheel balance

*****

I have done about 8 tires now with the balance beads and am convinced that this is the only way to go. The first set of tires took me on a 8000kms journey on rough roads before the tire wore down. i was curious of what the beads looked like after all these miles. I figured that they would be worn down and powedered up, but looked like new. I was carefull and pulled them out of the old rubber and reinstalled in the replacement tires. The inside of the old rubber was not effected by the beads at all. I am saving about $50 per tire by doing this myself. So far for me that is a $400 savings.

Thought it was a gimmick, but they actually work

*****

I was skeptical at first, but determined to change my own tires and balance them myself. I thought I'd try this before spending big money on a static balancing set up or going through the trouble of making one.

I was sure it sounded too good to be true, but I've been really impressed. I've put on a couple of hundred KMs with the balance beads at varying speeds. My old tires must have come out of balance a bit through wear, because I can feel a very big difference in the vibration at speed - much smoother now.

I have a BMW R1100GS and put 3oz in the rear and 2oz in the front. It wasn't quick, or fun to put them in, but it was a small price to pay. The kit is very well thought out too. I was impressed that they even provide the extra valves and caps. Its a nice touch.

I'd definitely recommend these. Its not just snake oil.

Is tire fitting easy?

Of course, you'll be picky about your body shop, materials and experts when it comes to this type of repair. Surely you will be attentive and picky if you need to carry out a “heart operation” - motor repair. And the suspension, and the electrician - everything is important! But the tires ... it seems that everything is simple with them. It's "it seems".

How does it happen?

Puncture, loss of pressure. They noticed or triggered the sensors - and the look itself finds a roadside tire sign. The first one that came across. And there, slightly grimy "sorcerer's students" in half an hour and ridiculous pennies bring everything back to normal. A familiar picture? If so, then subsequent miracles will not surprise.
- They put a “flagellum” and let it go, nothing happened at all, but the cord rusted and the tire was of your choice.
- They put a “fungus”, but somehow carelessly, from the inside they didn’t really look at the tire ... now we need to understand that it’s not so much how much it costs to fix the first repair?
- It seems that they did everything properly, but now the wheel seems to constantly “poison”, although there is no puncture.
- Runout on the steering wheel - is it after repair or has nothing to do with it? Need to go back to service.
And so on. And I do not want to list the worst options. What for? It already seems to be clear that tire service is also serious. Especially now that the car is digitized and connected from bumper to bumper.

What does a complete tire service include?

- Tire fitting, balancing, pressure control and inflation. This is the absolute minimum. But even here there are huge features. This is the quality of the equipment in the first place - the protection of the process from operator errors, the protection of the disk and tire from mounting damage, the breadth of the size range of tires, the speed of installation, and so on. Let's add here something completely unobvious to the client, but the most important: equipment adjustment, or control of the accuracy of measurements taken by him. Because the “zero” on the screen is a virtual zero that the system draws based on how it sees the process and where its reference point is.

- Tire and disc cosmetology: tire washing, tire blackening, wheel cleaning. Coloring discs: a complex and specialized job, often carried out with the involvement of specialists in a narrow field. Let's add here cute little things like selling and monitoring the status of "secrets", replacing nipples ... It seems that it's not all that important. But it's nice and helpful.

- Digital and special services. This includes monitoring the status of tire pressure sensors and, if necessary, replacing them with prescribing new ones in the system; accurate fine balancing with the help of special devices and systems;

- Repair: punctures, cuts. We mean a complete repair according to factory technologies. When defects that cannot be removed without risk to safety are not accepted into work, and the repair itself does not lead to a critical deterioration in balancing conditions. And, of course, the life of the wheel will be long.

- Separate service block - work with commercial vehicle tires. It's not just about the size. There are a lot of specific requirements and a much higher need for repairs: these tires bring money to customers and therefore should be in order.

Harmful services

Let's mention them. A very common form of income for service stations and roadside workshops in particular. This includes works and services that are technologically prohibited or are temporary solutions, but presented as permanent ones. We list only the worst and most common.

Puncture repair with flagellum. This is a TEMPORARY repair, its purpose is to provide an opportunity to get to a tire fitting with a full range of services and materials. The only way. 100 km is already too much for a flagellum!

Rolling alloy wheels. And who only does not offer it. Although the ban on this type of repair is prescribed by all automakers. The reason is the properties of aluminum alloys. We will not delve into the topic. After all, there is also welding of disks with argon ... and there are even those who give a “guarantee” for it.

Repair any damage to wheels. Technologies of reputable suppliers of repair materials, and the grandee in this world - TipTop / Germany / - carefully and unambiguously describe the areas of permissible repair and the extent of damage permissible for repair. The instructions of this brand and its respected colleagues are the Bible, the Koran and the Talmud for tiremen (depending on who believes in what). And this is the case when faith guarantees a long life and complete security!

Tire repair

Puncture repair is more or less familiar to everyone, drivers acquire this inevitable experience on our roads in the very first years of their experience. But the repair is more complicated - cuts on the treadmill and especially the sidewalls - not everyone ordered as a service.

Some important answers

Is it safe?
Yes, completely - as long as the technology is followed: from assessing the suitability of a cut for repair to using the right materials and processes throughout the repair.

Is it long term?
Of course, with a residual tire life of 20%, that is, with significant tread wear, repair is not advisable. But for an almost new tire - of course. It will last a long time and retain its qualities.

Will this greatly affect the appearance and balance?
No. The tire may have noticeable repair marks, but these are minor. Balancing will take place regularly. Although, probably, the master will advise not to put such a tire on the front axle if there are non-repair tires.

Is it expensive?
Repair takes 2 hours or more. The price depends on the size of the cut.

What are the repairability limits?
There are clearly defined areas of acceptable repairs and acceptable cut sizes (usually in the sidewall area - no more than 5 cm for passenger tires). Typical cuts - treadmill, lower sidewall - are usually repairable.

Equipment

The set is generally simple. Vulcanizer, expander, chalk, roller, scissors, low-speed and high-speed pneumatic drills, ruler, scraper, a set of abrasives and nozzles for a drill, a knife, a heater for raw rubber, lighting. The materials are also easy to list: cleaner, glue and hot melt adhesive, thermal layer restorer, raw rubber, foil, a set of plasters. It's simple again, isn't it?

Now to the technology

And once again, it is the observance of the technology and the quality of the materials that give a reliable and durable result. Most workshops that are ready to perform high-level repairs use TipTop or TECH materials. These companies in Russia provide full-fledged training for tire repairers and issue detailed repair instructions.
In the Volin shopping center, specialists are trained and certified by TipTop technologists and use these materials as a priority.

Damage assessment

The first stage is the search for damage and its marking with chalk (not all cuts are large, the edges are not always clearly visible). Next is the determination of suitability for repair: measuring the length of the cut and the distance from its inner (outer - to the treadmill) edge from the heel of the tire bead.

Clearing, butchering the outer side

With a low-speed drill, the cover rubber is first removed, and then the walls of the cut and the area around are processed. Only after that you can specify the final size of the repair area and the thickness of the rubber in the repair area in order to calculate the curing time in the future - this is important!

Filling the outside of the cut

Use the cleaner, then apply the hot vulcanizing adhesive in the repair area and start the drying time. A lot here depends on the temperature and humidity in the room, that is, translated into Russian realities - on the willingness of the master to follow the technology, and not “drive volumes”.
While the glue dries, the raw rubber is cut into small strips and heated to 80 degrees Celsius.
Heated raw rubber fills the recess at the site of the cut. It is rolled with a roller, carefully. The final protrusion above the surface of the tire is correct, and it is at least 3-5 mm.

! Two types of raw rubber are used - with and without a cord inside. The use of both types is mandatory for large cuts. After all, we don't want to see a hernia afterwards...

Vulcanization

The most "deserted" stage of repair. The master calculates the vulcanization time and turns on the vulcanizer, properly marking the repair area. For large cuts, a "cushion" is used, which makes the heating more uniform ... and significantly increases the curing time. In our photo, such a pillow is used.
After vulcanization, be sure to allow the repair area to cool down.

Further work is carried out on the inner surface of the tire.

Preparation of the internal repair area

Marking for the selected patch size. The entire area is cleaned in size: a low-speed drill, removal of the top layer of rubber. It is important to remove rubber dust after stripping - a special vacuum cleaner is used for this. And again - cleaner, scraper, glue.

Applying the patch

The patch is placed strictly according to the rules: its center must coincide with the center of damage, and the arrows on the reverse side must point towards the tire beads.
The patch is carefully rolled on with a roller.

Re-sealing a tire

Tubeless tires are the way to keep pressure for a long time thanks to a layer of butyl rubber that replaces the tube. And, since we removed it during the repair process, now we must apply it again.

Cosmetology: making it beautiful

Technically, after drying, the tire is ready for use. But it looks unaesthetic and has excess material, which is bad for balancing too. Therefore, we again process the outer surface in the repair area with a low-speed drill with a special nozzle - we remove excess material. And then we use a high-speed drill (18000 rpm or more) to “fuse” the repair area.
The tire is now ready for use!

Special work

Checking and replacing tire pressure sensors

The device is compact and lightweight. The algorithm of his work is such that he "leads" the master through the entire process without errors and deviations. Sequential monitoring of the sensors "in a circle" is envisaged, including the spare wheel sensor. In our example, a car with a high ground clearance and the sensor can be read from the outside, from under the trunk, without even opening the door. Prescribing sensors is also automated. Everything is simple. If there is a proper device, of course. And if the technical center has a stock of sensors and experience in prescribing them.

Commercial vehicle tires

Not all vehicles can fit inside the tire shop. But the site in front of the tire fitting allows you to take the widest range of cars. All of them will receive full tire service. Wheel washing - the lift allows you to lift and wash large tires; fine balancing – the Haweka adapter set includes versions for vans and light trucks. Final tightening is carried out ONLY with a torque wrench. The shopping center "Volin" unconditionally observes this rule. Considering that there are surveillance cameras and they work, what has been said is not empty words.

In general, a tire is round. And, if she gets a little help, she will be able to roll along the roads for a long, long time, without reminding the driver of anything bad about herself ...

High-precision tire/rim diagnostics and wheel balancing

The diagnostic \ balancing stand GEODYNA 9000P from the German company Hofmann performs a complete scan of the tire and disk using five 3D laser cameras. Data is entered automatically and contactlessly.

Thanks to multidirectional diagnostics, all wheel equipment defects are determined in one cycle: flat wear spots, damage in the sidewall areas. The tire is checked for correct fit. The results are displayed on a color screen in 3D.

Stand measures:
- taper;
- radial and axial displacement;
- depth of the tread pattern, etc.

The wheel is fixed and centered on the stand using an electromechanical Power Clamp. The glue weight is attached as precisely as possible using the Geodata measuring arm. A special function optimizes the smoothness of the ride.
The results of the program are stored on the memory card.

Diagnostic complex Hofmann Geodyna 9000p

Allows you to control and/or set/measure:

- Side slip index (TPI)
- wheel alignment control (APC)
- Diagnosis of Radial Vibrations (RFV)
- tire wear forecast (TWOP)
- Ride optimization
- optimal tire position on the rim
- the ability to install / hide weights / balancers behind the spokes of the disk
- the optimal arrangement of the wheels on the car.

Wheel balancing:

Balancing stand GEODYNA 8200P from the German company Hofmann.

Diagnosis of wheel runout is carried out simultaneously with the measurement of unbalance.
High radial runout is automatically detected during rim diagnostics and provides a means of identifying the causes of vibrations caused by deviations from the correct geometry of the rim and tire.
easyWEIGHT function. The dot laser pointer ensures fast, accurate and convenient placement of the adhesive weight on the rim. easyALU function.

Quality and safe tire replacement:

Hofmann Monty 3300 Racing SmartSpeed GP Plus tire changers are certified by the tire manufacturers organization WDK.

The machine works with rims up to 24" in diameter and 15" wide. Thanks to special retrofitting, the “third hand” can be used to service low-profile and run-flat tires, including those equipped with mechanisms and devices for mounting armored tires.

The unit has an exclusive system of inverter self-regulation of the operating speed. The self-centering clamp guarantees correct fixation. The rack is blocked by a pneumatic actuator. Plastic protection on all devices in contact with the disc prevents damage to the paintwork of the disc. Two cylinders provide secure clamping. A booster is provided for instant tire inflation.

Efficient wheel straightening and rolling:

The Sirius station wagon semi-automatic machine from the Avtostar company restores the geometric parameters of both metal and light alloy wheels. The device works in two ways:

- straightens (rolls) the circumference of the disc using a two-sided roller system,
- corrects problem areas (ellipticity, radial, axial displacement) by hydraulic installation, if necessary, the disc is preheated.

During operation, the disc is securely clamped by a disc locking system with a central clamp, which allows for the most accurate repair and restoration work on rims.
