Since its introduction last spring, Caterpillar’s Pocket Technician has helped drivers improve fuel mileage and truck performance by monitoring truck engine functions and driving style. Now, fleets can do the same and more, with a specialized fleet edition
that allows the fleet manager to set more than 50 truck engine parameters for maximum efficiency.
Pocket Technician is a Palm-based tool that offers drivers and fleet managers advanced Cat diagnostics and electronic capabilities through the convenience and affordability of a Palm device. The original edition -- the Driver Edition -- gave drivers increased diagnostic capabilities and improved ability to manage their truck’s operation.
The new Fleet Edition includes the same features as the original, but also offers “read-and-change” capability on 54 engine parameters.
“The Pocket Technician Fleet Edition is designed to manage a fleet of trucks, and save the engine information to a computer,” said Steve Brown, sales development manager, Cat On-Highway Engine Division. “It allows the fleet manager to save trip data, view diagnostic information, and achieve maximum fuel mileage by setting specific engine parameters.”
Base features of the Driver Edition include: individual trip and lifetime totals; engine operating information; active diagnostic codes; read and change capability on 21 engine parameters; maintenance information; and theft deterrent. The new Fleet Edition adds 33 programmable parameters and allows the fleet manager to save mileage, mpg, idle time, load factor and other information to allow better management of multiple trucks. The Fleet Edition also enables the fleet manager to view logged diagnostic information, saves and prints data for multiple trucks, and includes a driver reward component that helps the manager set goals, measure performance factors and score individual drivers.
Truck owners with the Driver Edition can easily upgrade their software to the Fleet Edition
The Pocket Technician kit includes software, plug-in adapter and truck connecting cable. Simply download the Pocket Technician software, plug the Palm hand-held device into the adapter, and connect the adapter to the in-cab data port in any Cat powered truck.

Yuri Pasholok. Pocket Tracked Fighter for the French Cavalry
History of the Renault VE, an experienced French tank destroyer based on the AMR 33 VM light cavalry tank
In a number of countries the situation was such that the army was often divided into two competing branches of the armed forces - infantry and cavalry. Cavalrymen, like once knights, considered themselves an elite, this branch of the army, due to its high mobility, often solved key tasks on the battlefield. Meanwhile, the battles of the First World War partly nullified the capabilities of the cavalry. It did not disappear, but there was a need for its mechanization. The French were the first to mechanize their cavalry. Of course, in the 1920s, things were tight with finances, nevertheless, certain successes took place. The cavalry received half-track tractors, as well as half-track cannon armored vehicles. The latter, in terms of characteristics, differed little from tanks, surpassing them in mobility. With this approach, the appearance of full-fledged tanks in the cavalry was a matter of time.
Renault light tank destroyer, as you can see, still that bank of people
In general, cavalry tanks were not allowed, and such a strange system was observed not only among the French. Suffice it to recall the Americans, who called a full-fledged tank as a Combat Car, that is, an armored vehicle. The same was true of the Japanese cavalry. I must say that at first the French cavalry was not going to acquire tanks. Half-track armored vehicles passed as AMC (Automitrailleuse de Cavalerie, cavalry armored vehicles), and at 19In 31, an armored reconnaissance car AMR (Automitrailleuse de Reconnaissance) also appeared. At the same time, by the beginning of 1932, Brigadier General Jean Flavigny came to the conclusion that the cavalry needed a full-fledged tank. He was clearly inspired by the new British "patrol" reconnaissance tanks, which rushed at a speed comparable to an armored car. As a result, on January 16, 1932, work officially began on a reconnaissance tank, which was also designated as AMR. That is, officially an armored car.
The first tests went without gun
December 30, 1930, the French army has developed specifications for a whole family of combat vehicles. These specifications were approved on January 9, 1931. These included an armored personnel carrier (Type K), a reconnaissance vehicle (Type L), an armored command vehicle (Type M), an infantry supply vehicle (Type N), a fast artillery tractor (Type O), a tank destroyer (Type P) and 4 more type. Of all the variety of cars, only Type N really shot, so the Renault UE was born. Later, the Renault VM reconnaissance tank, also known as the AMR 33 VM "armored reconnaissance car", descended from it. Also, another device was born, which developed in parallel with Renault VM. We are talking about the Renault VE, the first French dedicated tank destroyer.
By 1934, when the car was tested, the AMR 33 VM platform, of which the car was a variant, was no longer a priority
At first, the ideas for combat vehicles, the specifications of which were approved in January 1931, were completely different. Suffice it to say that even the Type N, on which Renault UE was created, was supposed to be both tracked and half-tracked. The Type K armored personnel carrier was created both on a half-track and on a wheelbase. Some machines did not go beyond the performance requirements at all, the Type L scout was the most unlucky. As for the Type P tank destroyer, work on it actually began only in December 1932 years. By that time, the reconnaissance tank (sorry, reconnaissance armored car) Renault VM was being tested with might and main, while the search for the optimal suspension was underway. Therefore, work on a new car, which received the Renault VE index, was significantly slowed down.
canon antichar de 37 mm modèle 1934, good gun, but not for that chassis
The problem was, however, not only with the chassis. The customer did not immediately decide on weapons. Initially, the tank destroyer was supposed to be armed with a 25-mm anti-tank gun, but as the work progressed, appetites grew. As a result, the final armament decision was the canon antichar de 37 mm modèle 19 37 mm casemate gun.34. It was a completely serial and modern gun system, created by APX specifically for installation in long-term firing points. According to the concept, the gun was suspended from the ceiling of the bunker and could go inside along the rails. In general, the performance characteristics of this gun raises questions about why the French tried to stick 25-mm guns. The gun, which had a barrel length of 53 caliber, provided an initial projectile velocity of 850 m / s and armor penetration of 30-40 mm at a distance of 1000 meters. The main problem of the system was that it turned out to be compact in terms of a casemate gun, but turned out to be somewhat cumbersome for a tank. It needed a makeover that no one wanted to do. Therefore, the further development of events looked predictable.
Renault VE final configuration
While weapons were being selected, Renault was working on the Renault VE chassis. In fact, work on the chassis began in 1934, when the Renault VM, aka AMR 33 VM, finally began mass production. At first, the tank destroyer rode without weapons. They did not invent a bicycle and simply took the ready-made chassis of a reconnaissance vehicle, remaking it for the installation of a more powerful weapon. The tower was abandoned, and the entire rear part was redone. The installation of the gun was placed in the center of the vehicle, the former commander, who became the loader, was planted in the aft part of the fighting compartment. In fact, he ceased to be a commander, because he saw absolutely nothing. Now the machine was commanded by a driver, who also became a gunner. Frankly, it turned out to be some kind of bank of people, which had three pluses. This is a powerful, for its time, anti-tank gun, high mobility, as well as a very low silhouette. The height of the car was only 1.5 meters.
In fact, the car already had zero chances for a series. Even without guns
On tests that began in the spring of 1935, the Renault VE accelerated to 54 km/h, with an average speed of 32 km/h. Not bad for a tank destroyer. Another issue is that the car was extremely uncomfortable. Officially, the reason for the abandonment of it was the appearance of a 47-mm anti-tank gun. Although in fact it is more like looking for at least some reason to stop work. Real canon antichar de 37 mm model 1934 was too big for such a chassis. More precisely, Renault VE itself was not suitable for such purposes. Not to mention the fact that by that time the Renault VM chassis was considered obsolete. The Renault ZT was born. Later, as many as two tank destroyers were created on its basis - with a turret (AMR ZT 2) and a casemate (AMR ZT 3) armament arrangement. At the same time, both vehicles were armed with 25-mm guns. This is a hint that the French military made a mistake with the Renault VE gun. Although it is rather worth talking about something else. They once again made a mistake with the base. The gun of the Renault VE was good, it required a larger tracked chassis, which the French cavalry simply did not have.
