The INTERCO Cobalt M/T Mud Terrain Tire

In late spring 2017 INTERCO Tire launched the Cobalt M/T, the newest addition to the already largest selection of specialty light truck tires on the planet.  The INTERCO Cobalt M/T might take some styling clues from a popular tire of the past, but that is as far as it goes. The Cobalt M/T is all new from the ground up and built using state of the art technology and produced in all new segmented molds.

INTERCO’s Cobalt M/T was developed using today’s newest technology and incorporates many features one would expect to find in a modern mud terrain tire.  The Cobalt M/T’s Aggressive styling, radial construction, longer tread life compound, noise reducing design features and an MSRP that make it one of the most competitively priced aggressive, radial mud-terrains on the market will surely have the off-road truck and jeep crowd excited about this new offering for years to come.

Since 1997 most all trucks that have rolled out of Detroit have come standard with 17” or larger wheels, as have all Jeeps produced since 2007.  In order to gauge market response, the initial test size offered in the Cobalt M/Ts was a 35.x 12.50 tire available for vehicles with 17”, 18”, 20” and 22” wheels. A larger 37x14.50 version will be offered sometime in the fall of 2017, with undetermined wheel sizes comparable to the 35s.  Interco will evaluate the markets response and develop a complete line of the Cobalt tires in sizes based on market feedback. Plans for a 38x15.50 and 17/40 are already on the development board, and rumor has it that most all sizes of the Cobalt M/Ts will be available for 15”, 16.5”, 17”, 18”, 20”, 22” and 24” wheels, but no ETA on when this stage will be complete has been released, but sometiume in 2021 seems to be the year, with 31x10.50, 33x10.50 and 33x12.50 versions following close behind.

The Cobalt M/T exhibits the same of off-road performance similar to that of the legendary tire it takes it’s styling from.  The Cobalt M/T incorporates scooped side lugs that give the tire a more squared off look, but also reduced road noise that is a concern with large, aggressive lugged tires. Lug height is a modest 24/32 or ¾”.  This is shorter than what most people would expect from this lug pattern, but it matches the height of pretty much all other radial mud terrains on the market.   The lugs may be a tad shorter than historically noted, but the additional siping that follow the lug over the shoulder allows the tire to handle better than ever on wet and icy terrain, while the over-all performance of these tires is utterly amazing.  Mud – check. Sand – check. Rocks - check.  Snow - check. Slush - check. Asphalt - check.  The Interco Cobalt M/T mud terrain tire is truly an all-terrain mud terrain.

The years of design and testing put into the Coblat M/T has paid off, and they poised to take a spot along side of the other legendary tires INTERCO already lays claim to in our garage.

  • 5 reasons to buy and not to buy Chevrolet Cobalt II

Author: Mikhail Balandin

Of course, the Cobalt that GM rolled out to our market is not at all the Cobalt that was sold in America from 2004 to 2010. So not the same that even the second generation is a conditional concept. American Cobalt is at least 2.2 liters of volume and 145 hp, and as a maximum - a two-liter turbocharged engine with 260 hp. And also - a very decent salon and almost a good reputation. We have it - something a little less than Cruz, but a little more than Aveo. With us, this is the only one and a half liter engine with a capacity of 105 hp. and a hard plastic interior. And yet, the car had its customers. I will say more: some of them were happy with their purchase and even wrote good reviews on the Internet. We carefully studied them, moved them with negative reviews cleared of obscenities and are ready to share with you an objective assessment of this car, compiled by the owners themselves.

Origins

As I said, there is nothing in common between the first and second generation Cobalt. The first is a car for the American market, built on the GM Delta platform. For example, the Opel Astra H or Opel Zafira B are built on the same platform. These cars were assembled in Ohio, sold under the Pontiac brand in Canada and Mexico, and almost nothing was heard about them in Russia. Another thing is the second generation Cobalt.

Chevrolet Cobalt 2004-10 first generation

This vehicle was released in 2011. He also has a GM platform, but far from American - GM Gamma. The closest relatives were Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Aveo or Opel Mokka. It cannot be said that the platform turned out to be somehow unpopular or unsuccessful from a technical point of view. In general, everything is fine, but Cobalt has a couple of shortcomings that do not paint it in any way: this is the absolute lack of alternatives to a single motor and far from the most successful automatic transmission. However, there are no serious complaints about the B15D2 motor. Simple, not too powerful, but does not create unnecessary problems. The situation is not the same with the GM 6T30 assault rifle. With reliability, she is not doing well, but her low prevalence saves the situation: Cobalts, like any other budget cars, were usually bought with manual transmissions. Apparently, for this reason, there are not so many crocodile tears, although, for example, the owners of more prestigious (there is a smiley here, but it is not visible) Cruze with the same box reflexively roar with beluga a little more often. Somewhere on the background vocals, the sobs of Aveo owners with the same GM 6T30 are heard. However, Cobalt has a little less problems with the box: its motor is not very powerful, and the box more or less holds its torque. Nevertheless, you can find stories about how the torque converter had to be changed under warranty. And sometimes - and not under warranty. Against this background, it is a little strange to see a very small number of complaints about this box. To be honest, I thought there would be more.

However, it's time to look into all these online groans of grief and joy in more detail. The car, in general, is not bad, although there are still some shortcomings.

Hate #5: dynamics

It's not that the Cobalt is completely slow. In principle, for its class, the indicators are quite ordinary: 11.7 s to 100 km / h with a manual and 12.6 with an automatic transmission. Moreover, due to six gears, the version with a machine gun accelerates to 170 km / h, and with mechanics - up to 169 (what a horror). Despite the fairly good numbers, complaints about the dynamics are common. Moreover, if there are more than enough dynamics in the city, they regularly complain about overtaking on the highway: “... it’s enough for the city, not enough on the highway.”

Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15

Many people appreciate the dynamics of the car adequately. Like, for a budget car - at the level. And someone even finds something good in it: “... slowly. If your wife is learning to drive, that's it." And such an assessment in the style of “slow, but what you wanted” is most common. However, the lack of dynamics on the track angers much more. And someone is not lucky at all: "The maximum speed - 132 km - was shown on the Simferopol highway." Something is really not enough.

Love #5: winter operation

Almost all Cobalt owners are pleasantly surprised by how well it survives the winter. And the point is not only in a confident start at negative temperatures (“It starts up to -36 degrees normally, I couldn’t try lower - there was no such frost”), but also in the operation of all systems that make winter driving as comfortable as possible. The engine warms up quickly, the interior does not cool down too quickly after stopping: “I liked that it starts up in any frost ... I liked that the interior warmed up quickly - this is important when you take your child to kindergarten in the morning”, “In winter, the car warms up pretty quickly, keeps well warm".

Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15

The efficiency of the stove and heating is also very pleasing to many: “... the stove fries like in Tashkent”, “Seat heating works in 20-30 seconds, heating the butt to the optimum”, “Mirrors with a frontal freeze for 3-5 minutes - you will not have time to smoke. Everything would be fine, if not for a couple of comments. Firstly, they often complain about a freezing trunk lid, and secondly, quite often there were complaints about suddenly dead factory batteries. Yes, it is difficult to do something with the cover, but the battery is easy to replace, so the winter for Cobalt, most likely, is really not too scary. True, one of the owners told a terrible story about how, in the cold, after starting the engine, the crankshaft oil seal was squeezed out. I think this is rather an exception, and he also did not say anything about the characteristics of the oil. If it is -30 outside, and 10W50 in the engine, a lot can be squeezed out.

Hate #4: Paintwork

Bad paint is, of course, bad. And many, of course, do not like it: “Coloring is just a bad thing. Especially black cars. Scratches, abrasions arise from everything in a row: grass, a bag. Door handles suffer especially hard, and without exception: "... the paint peeled off the door handles, came off with the snow." It is sad. But there is good news: even without paint, Cobalt does not rust immediately. Therefore, people say this: "... the paintwork is very weak, but the metal itself is galvanized, and no rust appears in the places of chips." And all because the metal is "galvanized".

Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15

In general, if you touch up chips in time, everything will be fine. But you will say goodbye to the paint on the handles in any case.

Love No. 4: motor

There are no complaints about the Cobalt motor. Moreover, for some reason he is highly praised. To be honest, the only positive feature of this engine is its relative reliability up to a sufficiently high mileage. Well, the simplicity of the design. But the owners find two more pluses that cause extremely strong delight. This is a timing chain and silence during operation: “It works stably, without extraneous sounds”, “Nothing flows, it doesn’t eat enough! It’s not scary for the timing belt, because instead of it there is a CHAIN! And it’s not at all roaring / thundering”, “A timing chain is used on the Chevrolet Cobalt, which can also be attributed to pluses for additional reliability.”

Chevrolet Cobalt engine 2011–15

And the funny thing is that for some reason a lot of people like the sound of this engine when you press the gas pedal: without irritating the ear. Tell me, please, how can a straight-four rumble solidly? I would listen.

But seriously, the B15D2 engine fits the Cobalt perfectly. An inexpensive car needs such a motor: simple, non-flammable, with cheap maintenance. Yes, it’s not always enough on the track, but what can you do ... Look, the 1.4 TSI EA111 looks livelier on the track, but something doesn’t really bring joy.

Hate #3: Handling

When I tried to figure out what was wrong with the Cobalt's handling, I almost caught brain inflammation. It's hard to find anything more controversial. All reviews on these topics are something like "Hammer of the Witches" in Old Church Slavonic. It seems interesting, but it's not clear at all. Almost everyone says that Cobalt swallows bumps and pits very well. And at the same time they complain: “Rideability is the greatest evil here. No one thought about fine-tuning along the way. ” And then they contradict themselves further: "Very shaking, rolling machine." Both shaking and rolling at the same time? It must be tried. But that's not all. We read the following reviews: “The steering wheel is light at any speed, the car immediately follows the slightest deviation of the steering wheel” and next: “. .. the steering wheel is heavy and sluggish (the rail could have been made shorter), in general, the car is clumsy.” Yo-my, so where is the truth? It seems that you need to try it yourself, otherwise you will not be able to find the truth.

Interior Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15

Still, there is one common direction - dissatisfaction with handling. It doesn't matter if the car is soft or bumpy, it steers easily or not, it follows the movement of the steering wheel or rushes like a brick - almost everyone criticizes its behavior on the road. However, those who did not expect outstanding performance from Cobalt are satisfied. Particularly satisfied are those who immediately replaced the factory tires. Maybe the reason for the contradictions in them?

Love #3: Economy

Occasionally someone complains about some strange consumption of 15-17 liters per hundred kilometers. They are usually driven around the corner right away and hit with a spring from a GAZ-66: you are all lying, the consumption is good. And they give their numbers: "... consumption - the highway at 90 km / h is about 6 liters, the city - 8-10, depending on the time of year and your wishes on the road."

It is important that there is not much difference between the consumption with manual and automatic transmissions. Everyone is happy: “Very economical, which is important these days with our gasoline and its prices. In the summer, 7.5-8 in the city, on the highway at 100-120 km / h 6-6.5. For an inexpensive car, this is very important: “... no more than 7 and a half liters per hundred. Offset, well done, Kolobok, knows how to save the family budget.

2011–15 Chevrolet Cobalt

Hate #2: Build Quality

The Cobalt's build quality is perceived by many with some strange doom. It seems like what did you want from the Uzbek GM ... But there are really a lot of flaws. The fact that dealers issued cars without setting the toe-camber angles is no longer of much interest to us - they were all put up. But the need to “treat with a file after assembly” is already interesting: “... there are no crickets, but all kinds of burrs are tired, you need to earn extra money with sandpaper”, “a sharp cut of plastic on the steering wheel - it was pricked several times, then it was removed with sandpaper”. Well, everything else is also not very fun: “The plastic under the front speakers leaves, some cardboard boxes are laid between the radio and the panel ... A bolt also fell out from under the panel, where to screw it back - I didn’t find it, which means there was an extra or spare ". By the way, many people say about under-twisted bolts: "... assembly quality - many bolts are under-twisted, the body is not painted." About non-painting also occurs, but much less frequently. Usually they talk about unpainted doorways.

Love №2: reliability

Cobalt rarely breaks. More often than not, you have to change the stabilizer struts, which many consider to be a consumable, but otherwise everything is very good: “94,000, I only changed the front brake pads, 2 sets (I drive sometimes) and the stabilizer struts”, “. .. the car never let me down - there were no breakdowns that would lead to the fact that it would be impossible to drive it”, “... this is really a very reliable car ... I used it in the tail and mane, transported 600 kg on it for a distance of 100 kilometers, there was off-road, and the track, constant traffic jams.

Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15

True, there is one remark: at the dawn of its appearance, Cobalt infuriated by the cost of its spare parts and consumables and the lack of analogues. Even front brake pads costing 5000 (which is simply abnormally expensive for such a car) sometimes had to wait weeks. Not everywhere, of course. In some cities dealers worked better. But not cheaper.

Spare parts for Cobalt are now quite available. But they rarely buy them: the car is reliable, for which many people love it.

Hate #1: looks

Cobalt's exterior made owners write such reviews that I envied their wit: "Cobalt is proof that you can make a car even more miserable in design than Logan. " And many do not like this car inside: “Cobalt is a rare freak. And both inside and out.”

Sounds, of course, somehow too categorical and sad. Yes, it is difficult to call Cobalt handsome. But it also has its advantages: “If you put up with the ugliness of Cobalt and choose solely for reasons of practicality, then the option is good. But the ugliness was clearly overdone. Whoever drew him would have his hands torn off. In general, you have to compromise. Moreover, the people draw unambiguous conclusions: "A terrible bastard, but in terms of driving performance and price - that's it."

Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15

Love #1: lots of space

Cobalt's size is the reason why it was often chosen new at one time, and now it is bought in the secondary market. There are a lot of places everywhere, both in the cabin and in the trunk: “Very good and voluminous trunk for a sedan, there are no analogues ... I easily shoved the washing machine and a bunch of shopping bags”, “The interior is spacious - four people sit down, and they don’t even strain after me” , "My weight is 119 kg, height is 193. I sit in cobalt like a king and I can sit down by myself." There are tons of reviews like this. In general, all the positive reviews about Cobalt start with the size. And sometimes they end.

2011–15 Chevrolet Cobalt 2011–15 Chevrolet Cobalt

Okay, just kidding. Still, many are pleased with both reliability and resistance to corrosion. They would have assembled it normally - and there would have been no price for Cobalt. Unless, of course, you get into it with your eyes closed and a roll of sandpaper.
