Winter is over, which means it's time to prepare the transport for the new season. Among the issues that car owners face, the issue of choosing tires is especially worth it. How to choose truck tires that are ideal in all respects?
TOP-3 fundamental factors:
About everything in order. The design of a truck tire is a complex product, in some respects even more complex than passenger car tires. First, let's look at what a truck tire is.
The truck tire includes the following items:
Bead wire ring is a bundle of steel wire needed to properly seat the tire.
Sidewall is responsible for protecting the cord layer, and also affects the driving comfort and driving performance of the truck.
Longitudinal and directional grooves form a system that drains fluid from the contact patch.
The shoulder area of the tire tread is located between the sidewall of the tire on one side and the tread on the other. "Shoulders" are necessary to improve the connection of the carcass and tire tread.
Responsible for directional stability and accuracy in response to steering wheel turns center rib .
The tread is a thick layer of durable rubber. It is the tread that contacts the road surface while driving. As a rule, the protector consists of two (sometimes more) layers.
Belt plies - a series of steel cord plies that provide structural strength to the tire. The breaker layers protect the tire carcass from the penetration of foreign objects into it.
The cord layer of the carcass is responsible for the transfer of steering and braking forces between the wheel and the road surface.
Bead tape , which is made of either cord or strong rubberized fabric. The fabric protects the bead from damage when mounting the tire, and also protects against abrasion on the rim while driving.
The bead heel is a profiled part of the tire bead that is compressed into the wheel rim by air pressure.
The tire bead , consisting of two structural elements, the bead and the base, is the seat of the tire that fixes the tire to the rim. The bead prevents the tire from stretching, ensuring its rigidity.
Filler Cord is a layer of steel wire required to reinforce the transition area between the sidewall and the rim ring.
Undergroove tread . A tread element that protects the carcass from damage by foreign objects, such as stones. It improves the tire's puncture resistance, contributing to better recoverability.

Consider the factors to consider when choosing truck tires.
The routes a truck takes determine a lot. Also road conditions determine the type of tread pattern to be used. We distinguish three types of pattern used on truck tires: road, off-road, and also universal, which is equally suitable for use on asphalt, gravel and soil.
Truck tires with road pattern are used on quality asphalt roads. On other types of coverage, they lose their advantages.
Universal pattern is used on truck tires made in Russia. It is easily recognizable by the diamond-shaped tracks left by the truck. Such tires are designed for trucks that have to drive both on asphalt roads and on dirt roads.
However, versatility has a number of features: such tires are inferior to road tires in speed, economy, acoustic comfort, load capacity, wear resistance and durability. Thus, the fuel consumption of a truck with universal tires is ten to fifteen percent higher than that of the same vehicle with road tires.
The third type of truck tire has the tread pattern off-road . Such tires are identified by pronounced lugs with a significant lateral area. They push through the ground, allowing the tire to push off the top layer. All-terrain tires are especially good when driving on sand, deep mud and snow blockages. It is possible to operate these tires on a smooth asphalt surface, but this will significantly increase fuel consumption, up to twenty to forty percent compared to road tires.
What are we transporting?
Manufacturers of truck tires strictly divide tires according to the type of operation.
Let's highlight the main types of use:
Trunk transportation . They feature a minimum of grooves on the tread, which minimizes rolling resistance and increases the economy of the tires.
Long-distance or international transportation. Operating conditions: high-quality roads, constant load, uniform speed, rare braking. As a result, tire manufacturers focus on reducing rolling resistance and fuel efficiency, even more so than the road tire designer. In comparison with analogues, such models have an almost smooth tread pattern, which, in addition to being economical, makes it possible to achieve greater handling and directional stability.
Tires for regional flights . As a rule, trucks have to carry goods over relatively short distances, drive on good roads, off-road, and along the streets of large cities, where rather complicated maneuvers are required from the driver, which adds work to the creators of truck tires. Truck tires of this type can be identified by the combination of transverse grooves with deep longitudinal grooves.
Truck tires for urban transport . Close to regional, with minor differences. In particular, the requirements for maneuverability and braking are increased.
Special tyres. Designed for specialized operating conditions: agriculture, construction, transportation of dangerous goods.
From which axle?
According to the type of axle, truck tires are divided into three types:
Truck tires on the front axle take a lot of load. It is they who account for the main stress during braking. The tires on the front axle need to provide the best grip possible when cornering, minimizing the risk of aquaplaning. Therefore, the tread pattern has wide and deep longitudinal grooves that absorb liquid from the contact patch. Transverse grooves, as a rule, tend to be reduced in all possible ways. This is due to the fact that heavy braking increases the load on the wheels of the front axle, and the transverse grooves can become a place for tire rupture.
Tires mounted on the rear axle of the tractor solve other problems. Effective traction with the surface on which the truck is moving depends on them. For this reason, the rear axle tire tread pattern must contain wide transverse grooves, the number and dimensions of which are directly dependent on the complexity of the operating conditions: the worse the conditions, the larger and larger the transverse grooves.
Less requirement for trailer or semi-trailer tires. They are not required to either propel or steer the road train. Transverse grooves on these tires may be completely absent, and longitudinal grooves, as a rule, are much smaller. Compared to tires for the front and rear axle, they look almost smooth.
It is worth noting that there are trucks with three or more axles. In this case, tires for the front axle are installed on all driving axles, tires for the steered axle, respectively, on steered axles.
In general, the choice of truck tires is a complex and responsible task that requires the car owner to have special knowledge in various areas. Especially if you need to choose tires for several trucks. The right tires will save you money and time in the long run.
