Is it true that the throttle cable on the 400ex only opens 75%? i saw on another web site that if u adjust the cable you can get it to open 100% and go faster is this true?:confused:

the throttle cable moves the inside components to open the carburator...when the carburator is fully opened the throttle stops moving...you can adjust the throttle so you can push it FARTHER or push it LESS but you cannot make your carburator open more then it does...if you were to adjust it so you would have less throttle movement that would let u move the throttle less until getting to full throttle...or the position where the carburator is fully opened. ..for farther throttle travel you will have a lot more travel in the throttle and you will have to push it father to reach full throttle

btw welcome to the site :D

o0o ok i se what you mean. thanks.... yea im new here how can i put a pic of my 400ex in the colum on the left side? I have another questions sorry about all the questions.... but if i modife the air box lid will it add ne hp/ speed? i have pics of how i want to modify it but i cant get the pics on here.

My 400EX was delivered to me with the throttle adjustment screw screwed fully in. This only allowed for the throttle to open approx 75% of the way. I re-adjusted it to allow for 100% opening. I suggest you check yours. Take the airbox tube off, and adjust the screw on the throttle to allow it to open all the way. Check to make sure it will still idle fine, and turn the bars from side to side to make sure it isn't affected by bar position.

My understanding is that a lot of Honda's are delivered this way, as they come from the factory that way, and the dealer's don't check and adjust them prior to delivery.

you can just adjust the cable up there on the handle bars. what may be easiest is that you take the black plate off of the top of the throttle linkage. when you look inside there, you can see how the cable operates. if you push the throttle all the way in and it is stopped by the back stop, you know yours isn't adjusted the way it should be. just turn the cable outward to tighten it. this adjustment can be made right up where the cable goes to the bars.

Easy...

Just loosen the locknut/screw on the throttle cable (handlebars).

Then tighten the throttle cable----loosen the adjustment screw, till it starts to idle up, then back off a bit, tighten the locknut.

Your done.

& yes it is very possible that the carb isn't opening up all the way if the cable isn't adjusted properly. If you are moving the thumb throttle much at all without the engine responding, you need to adjust.

1. Pull back the rubber boot from the throttle cable (where the cable goes into the throttle housing on the handlebars)

2. Loosen the nut on the threaded part of the cable.

3. Put your quad in neutral and let it idle

4. Twist the threaded part of the cable left (like you are loosening it) until you hear the engine idle up. Turn the threaded part of the cable right just until the engine returns down to its normal ide.

5. Tighten the nut on the treaded part of the cable.

6. Pull the rubber boot back into place.

I don't do it the way maoz does it. I look down the carb throat. You have to take the air box boot off the carb to do it. I then push the thumb throttle all the way and see if the slide goes all the way up. If it doesn't , then I adjust the thumb throttle. Sorry if thats not clear. Just ask and I can go into more detail.

could u go into more detail. I have a pretty good idea what ur sayin just wanna make sure. Thanks a lot

1. Loosen the lock nut on the throttle cable (Where the throttle cable and the the thumb throttle meet). 2. Take the seat off. 3. Disconnect air box inlet hose from the carb. 4. If you look down the throat of the carb, you will first see the choke(it has to be open). Behind the choke you will see the slide( that controls how much air comes into the engine). If you push the throttle it goes up,release the throttle and its down. You want the bottom of the slide to be flush with the top of the throat of the carb. If its not, adjust the throttle cable by screwing the adjusting bolt outward(the one in step 1 ). I borrowed this picture from knighttimes post on removing the choke which is also a nice upgrade. Thank you Knighttime.

ok i looked through and it stiks down like 2 millimeters when at full throttle. If i adjust it to all the way when its flush wont it idle a lot higher?

dariusld

When you make the adjustment, you are just taking up slack in the cable. If you touch your thumb throttle, without starting it, there is probably a little play in it. If there is no play in it, then yes it will idle really high(like your pushing the throttle). But I haven't had that problem on the 4 quads I have done. I think if you go do yours, neither will you. And if you have trouble , just ask.

ok when i adjust it i take off this boot and turn the little knob thing? Hope whoevers pic i borrowed doesnt mind

dariusld

Yes. Pull back the boot, loosen the lock nut, turn the cable(the threaded part of the cable) outward till the slide is flush and then tighten the lock nut.

you adjust the cable at the thumb throttle u slide the rubber sleeve back to get to a lock nut loosen it and turn it to get the right amount of free play and thenn tighten it. To get more top speed i would say tightin it w/o any free play that should give you better throttle response and maybe top end

How to adjust the throttle and set the position angle?

The throttle valve is presented as an air valve, the functional task of which is to regulate the amount of air entering the motor. The fundamental features of the unit include a change in the cross section of the air channel.

An analogue of a modern car is a device of many components and assemblies. Deviations in the work of the smallest component can lead to quite serious problems. The throttle position sensor (TPS) is one example of this type of component. Throttle valve adjustment is an integral part of the scheduled diagnostics of any car. nine0003

The throttle valve is in the form of an air valve, the functional task of which is to regulate the amount of air entering the motor. The fundamental features of the unit include a change in the cross section of the air channel. When it is open, air flows freely through the intake manifold. The throttle position sensor located here determines the opening angle. This function is carried out by its communication with the engine control unit. The signals from the sensor contribute to the command from the control unit to increase the amount of injected combustible mixture. Thus, the working mixture is enriched, and the operation of the motor is close to maximum speed. nine0003

Its sensor includes two types of resistors:

  • Single turn constant.
  • Variable.

The sum of their resistance is approximately 8 kΩ. The reference voltage here is supplied to one of the extreme terminals from the controller, and the second terminal is connected to ground. Thanks to this, a signal is sent to the controller, informing about the current position of the throttle. The value of the pulse voltage depends on the element position level, the standard interval of which is 0.7 to 4 W. nine0003

Important: the open state of the unit indicates the level of pressure in the intake system of vehicles, similar to atmospheric; when closed - this value decreases to the state of vacuum.

Typical diversity

All types of DPDZ are known:

  1. Sample with a mechanical type of drive. nine0016
  2. Unit with electric drive type.
Throttle position sensor

The first type is introduced in economy class motor vehicles. The complete set of elements is combined in a separate block, which includes the following parts:

  • body;
  • throttle valve;
  • sensor;
  • idle speed regulator.

As an addition, there are also nozzles here, the functional task of which is to ensure the operation of the gasoline vapor recovery and crankcase ventilation systems. nine0003

Damper housing is part of the cooling system. The functional task of the idle speed controller is to maintain the crankshaft speed in the closed position of the damper when starting or warming up the engine. IAC is a stepper motor and valve. The functional tasks of these parts are to regulate the air supply to the intake system bypassing.

In modern conditions, most manufacturing plants equip machines with electric dampers of the drive type. These elements are characterized by their own electronic control system. Thus, at all speed ranges and loads of the machine, an optimal amount of torque is provided. By increasing power and dynamics, owners get a reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. nine0003

This item includes the following mechanisms:

  • Case.
  • Throttle valve.
  • Electric motor.
  • Reducer.
  • Throttle position sensor.
  • Spring return mechanism.
TPS

Differences in the electrical type of damper

Main functional differences:

  • Lack of mechanical connection between the gas pedal and the damper;
  • Throttle adjustment by direct movement of the damper. nine0016
  • The electronic system is able to independently influence the amount of torque of the internal combustion engine. This is possible due to the absence of a rigid connection between the gas pedal and the throttle. This condition is maintained even when the driver presses the accelerator.

Such functional changes are possible due to the operation of the sensors of the input type of the control unit and the actuator. This electronic control unit is additionally characterized by an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake and clutch position switch. Thanks to all this, the engine control unit successfully responds to sensor signals, converting them to the damper module into control actions. nine0003

Alternative replacement

Sometimes there are cars with parallel installation of 2 TPSs. In a functional sense, such an installation will not add any power, but in the event of a failure of one unit, the second one performs uninterrupted operation. Therefore, the introduction of two TPS is carried out in order to improve the reliability of the module. These elements can be both non-contact type and sliding type contact. As an add-on, this module design includes an emergency damper position, which is operated by a spring-loaded return mechanism. nine0003

Nature of faults

Malfunctions or incorrect adjustment of the damper may manifest itself in the following features:

  • uncertain or difficult engine start;
  • increased fuel consumption;
  • increased idle speed;
  • dips in acceleration;
  • jerking when switching.

Adjustment work

It is the damper that accounts for the majority of the work. Due to the fact that the damper is constantly involved in the moving operation of the motor, its position angle requires periodic adjustment. Please note that this process is quite painstaking. Do not avoid replacing the throttle valve if its adjustment leads to any deviations. nine0009 In order to avoid such incidents when replacing, we will consider in detail the details of the correct throttle adjustment.

First, turn off the ignition to bring the throttle to the closed position. Secondly, disconnect the connector in the sensor, in parallel checking for continuity between the terminals. Make sure there is no voltage. Then you can start setting up and adjusting the sensor. After that, it is necessary to resort to using a probe with a thickness of 0.4 mm. It is applied by placing it between the lever and the screw in parallel with the location of the throttle body gasket. nine0003

Using an ohmmeter (you can use another similar device), you need to make sure that there is no voltage here either. The presence of voltage indicates a malfunction of the sensor and its need for further replacement. Subject to the condition of no voltage, proceed to the direct adjustment of the sensor. The manipulations are as follows: rotate the throttle actuator until the angle between the terminals reaches a value equal to the technical standards for the existing vehicle. After completing the work, make sure that the screws on the sensor are firmly tightened. During the adjustment process, they could loosen up. nine0003

Motorcycle throttle cable adjustment

Turning the throttle on a motorcycle open the throttle with the throttle cable. More like two cables. One the cable opens the damper, and the second closes it. 'Cause just trust return spring cannot., it will not provide security and may not close damper on time. For the correct operation of the motorcycle engine, the correct adjustment of these two cables. If you overtighten the cable, you will get too high revs or you won't start the bike at all. If you loosen the cable, you will lose control of the motorcycle. in a difficult situation, and there will not be full power. Throttle cable adjustment divided by steps:

Step 1 - Install the motorcycle securely.

Most the best option is to install the motorcycle on a motor lift. If not, install on the center stand or stand.

Step 2 - Loosen the cables.

On gas cables have a tensioner. These are two wheels located on the cable jacket ten centimeters from the throttle or immediately below it. The principle of tension the device is simple - by spinning the wheel, you lengthen the cable jacket, accordingly shorten the release of the cable. Spinning the wheel, shirt shortens and lengthens the cable. Everything is simple! And so - we need to spin now wheels to ease the tension of the cable as much as possible. nine0003

Step 2 - Clean and Lubricate Throttle Stick

Unscrew two screws on the right console and open it into two halves. Now you can see the end of the cable and the throttle mechanism. Remove or disassemble further required. Clean the mechanism and the cable itself from dirt and dust. Lubricate the visible part of the cable and rubbing places with any grease. Now you can assemble the remote back until we lost the screws of the remote control case.

Step 3 - Clean and Lubricate the Throttle Spring. nine0137

If Your motorcycle has access to the throttle control mechanism, try to clean it well from dust and lubricate it well with any aerosol lubricant. You can use WD-40 lubricant. If access to there is no mechanism, you need to remove the gas tank or even the air filter. It does not make sense to describe this procedure, since all motorcycles have this procedure is different. Having no experience in this, it is better to use the services motorcycle service. nine0003

Step 4 - Adjust Cable

Try turn the throttle. The free play of the throttle stick, up to the resistance of the spring, should be small, about one centimeter. Free movement is necessary to You didn't accidentally open the damper. If the free play of the handle is more one centimeter, begin to slowly unscrew the adjustment wheel until achieve the desired result. If all attempts are in vain, seek help from motorcycle service. nine0003

Step 5 - Check damper closure

Front starting the engine, you need to make sure that we have correctly adjusted the cable gas. Use the throttle stick to open the choke fully, then drop the stick gas. The handle should quickly return without delay, and you should hear distinct click from the carburetor.
