CVT is a continuously variable transmission element commonly used on mopeds and other small engine vehicles. Motobecane, Peugeot, Derbi, Vespa, Minarelli and Honda mopeds offered at least one model with a variomatic transmission.
The
Variomatic transmissions use centrifugal weights to reduce the engine ratio as engine speed increases. This allows the CVT to keep the engine within its optimum efficiency when gaining ground speed or changing speed for climbing a hill.
Efficiency in this case can be fuel efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, or energy efficiency, allowing the engine to develop maximum power over a wide range of speeds.
Because the CVT allows the engine to rev at a constant RPM over a wide range of vehicle speeds, turning the throttle will make the moped go faster, but will not change the sound coming from the engine as much as a normal two speed or single speed. This is confusing to some riders. and leads to the erroneous impression of a lack of power.
Motobecane released their first and only CVT based transmission, Mobymatic, at 1957, a year after the invention of the CVT by the Dutchman Hub Van Dorn, even before the appearance of the first car with a CVT.
The Mobymatic consists of a variable size pulley driven by two to four weighted ball bearings and connected to a dual function automatic clutch. The CVT pulley drives a fixed diameter pulley attached to the final drive chain.
The Mobymatic transmission was standard on Motobecane models until their last release in the early 2000s. The only difference between early models and later releases was the omission of the Woodruff key.
Although not the best in terms of tuneability or clutch performance, this was an inexpensive workhorse that required no maintenance throughout the life of the engine other than a regular grease fitting every few hundred miles.

Vespa CVT has been fitted to all of their luxury moped models, the Bravo, Grande, Vespa Si, and even the upscale version of their economy model, the Vespa Ciao Deluxe. This drive differs from the Mobymatic in that it separates the clutch and CVT mechanisms, uses dual adjustable pulleys, and completely eliminates the main chain drive. The CVT is driven from the engine crank by an adjustable pulley driven by roller weights. The belt is pulled between the engine and the rear wheel where the clutch and spring pulley are located.
The spring pulley keeps the belt in tension by requiring the two pulleys to move relative to each other, as French pulleys do. The Vespa also has a gearbox inside the rear wheel hub where the CVT output is reduced by the final drive ratio and then applied to the wheel.
The Vespa uses five roller weights. The lack of symmetry of this design means that the performance of the CVT cannot be changed by removing weights. However, some models came with six or eight weight CVTs.
Honda essentially copied the design of their CVT and possibly their entire PA50 moped from the Vespa Bravo. They use the same functions, but with some technical differences.
