How do you get into atv racing

How to Get Started ATV Racing

Baltimore, MD (2/6/2009) - Here at ATVriders. com we get a lot of emails from ATV enthusiasts asking how they can get started in racing. They have seen the AMA ATV Motocross Nationals or GNCC ATV racing events on TV and think racing would be fun, so, we decided to put together some information that we hope will be useful for anyone wanting to get involved in growing sport of ATV racing.

One of the first things you will want to do is decide what kind of ATV racing you want to try. There are several major types of racing including motocross, cross-country, and flat track or TT racing just to name a few.

ATV Motocross Racing Information
Motocross (MX) racing is held on enclosed off-road circuits. Motocross is derived from the French, and traces its origins to British Scrambling competitions. The tracks used in these types of events can vary from about 1 mile to 2 miles in length and can consist of big jumps, tight turns, whoop sections, and natural terrain.

Motocross Racing typically attracts the largest crowds of racers & spectators, and also receives the largest support from the ATV manufacturers because it is very spectator friendly with typically the entire track visible from the spectators area, and with various styles of jumps, it is extremely action packed, which keeps racers & spectators coming back for more round after round

Races such as the AMA ATV Motocross Nationals, Yamaha / ITP Quadcross, New England ATV Motocross Series are three major motocross series’ that consist of several heat races (generally referred to as a ‘moto') and sometimes include an element of qualification. Motos are usually either given a set amount of time to race or a fixed number of laps to complete, the latter being the common format for amateur classes.

Motocross Races are typically started on a concrete or dirt starting gate with a live engine. Usually up to 20 racers at a time start at once with the drop of the gate, and they charge down a wide straight away, which is funneled down into a tighter 1st turn with the majority of tracks running about 20-30 feet wide to allow for passing

Typically motocross ready ATVs are 50" wide, and the ride height is lowered with smaller 18" rear tires & 19" front tires. Also, nerf bars & kill switch are required equipment, and typically all ATVs go through Tech Inspection to verify that ATV has all the safety equipment installed properly

Cross Country / Harescramble ATV Racing Information
Cross Country (XC) racing uses the timed method, which is better suited for that type of racing. Most XC style race heats can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the series and the class you are racing. All though XC racing takes quite a bit of skill to negotiate some of the terrain, endurance and equipment reliability are key factors in how well most racers finish.

In Cross Country Racing, ATV classes are lined up in rows typically in a wide open field with no limit to the number of racers, and each class is started from a dead engine and spread out about 1 minute between class starts. The time is adjusted at the end of the race for each class to determine the overall winners

Cross Country Racing are typically held in tight woods back east and in wide open desert out west, but there is still plenty of obstacles to keep the racing exciting from dodging trees, to mud & whoops sections. Also, track typically included a small motocross section near the specator area of the track

XC tracks usually consist of natural terrain including tight woods sections, rocks, mud, hill climbs and wide-open fields and can be 10 miles or longer. The GNCC ATV Racing Series is the premier national cross-country event with races held mainly in the eastern and mid-west portions of the country. The WORCS ATV Racing series is a cross-country style national race that is held on the west coast and southwest regions of the U. S.

XC Racers run heavy duty tires which with 20" Rears & 21" Fronts, and many run Tireballs to avoid flats. In the GNCC Series ATVs are normally around 46" inches Wide, while WORCS Racers run 50" wide because those races are more wide open with a larger motocross track. Also, Skid plates are very important component for XC Racing

Utility ATV racing has really been growing over the past couple of years, and typically there are classes for different engine sizes and modifications, and both Can-Am & Polaris sponsor racers at the GNCC Series as this sport continues to grow, and it allows for nearly anyone with a utility ATV to come out and race as long as they have a kill switch installed and proper riding safety gear

ATVMX 101 - ATV Motocross

New to ATVMX Racing? Do you need some extra help when it comes to figuring out what to do at your first race? Well you have come to the right spot, because this page is designed to help answer questions and break down what to do at your first race!

Are you hesitant? Don’t be! ATVMX offers classes for anyone from age 4-104 and any skill level.

Sign-Up Process:

The first thing you should do is decide what class you will run. The national classes can be viewed by clicking HERE. This page will inform you of all the classes available, what color number plate to run, and if it is a production class or not. Please note that number plates are required for back-up scoring.

You should base your class selection on your age and ability. Age classification is based on age as of January 1st for youth riders, and the day of the event for amateur racers. If you must transfer classes, your points will not transfer. When picking a skill level class, please be objective. “C” is truly a novice class, while “A” is considered the last step before becoming pro. It is important to choose the right class based on your skill level to ensure the best competitive racing will take place. Also, please note that per AMA rules, you are not allowed to move down a competition level once you have competed in a higher level. More information on rider classification can be found HERE.

At a few select rounds, pre-registration may be available. Pre-registration is never mandatory, but we recommend that you pre-register when it’s offered. Not only will it make things easier for you, but it also gets you to the fun quicker. After you complete the registration form you will receive an email confirmation with an attached PDF. Please print out this receipt and bring it to Rider Registration once you arrive at the track.

Whether you pre-registered or not, you will still need to visit Rider Registration before racing. Majority of the time you will be registering at the track with a paper registration form, so please bring your AMA card and a proper identification.

Ken Hill
AMA Membership:

You will also need to have a current AMA membership in order to compete. The AMA is our official sanctioning body and all racers must be members of the association. AMA memberships can be purchased by clicking HERE or you can buy a one-day pass at the event for $20. If you buy the one-day pass, but decide to race another race, you can credit the $20 toward your full-year membership by calling the AMA and speaking to their membership department.

Transponders:

Renting:

A racer only needs one transponder no matter how many classes the racer is in. Transponders can not be shared between racers. Each time your transponder passes over the finish line, the scoring software will know exactly who you are, what position you are in, and what your lap time is.

Each transponder requires the racer to leave $130 for a cash transaction. When the transponder is returned at the end of racing you will receive $100 back. If you use a credit card, your card will be charged $40 up front. If you do not return the transponder at the end of the event you will then be charged an additional $100.** all credit card transactions must be completed at this link before coming to the eScore trailer for pickup!!** The rental transponder must be returned at the event. eScore will be open at the same time as registration starts each day of signup for transponders to be rented. We will close the lap times kiosk and windows 1 hour after racing each day. If you want your lap times or wish to return you transponder please do so within these times.

Purchasing:

eScore will have a limited number of transponders available for purchase at the event for $125 cash and $135 credit. We rarely run out of transponders for sale but it is possible. All transponders received from eScore will expire one year from the day they are activated. At this time the transponder can be reactivated by connecting the transponder to a computer with Internet access using the MYLAPS website. eScore can also do a reactivation at the track. Transponders can also be purchased on the MYLAPS website.

Transponders cannot be shared between racers. Each time your transponder passes over the finish line, the scoring software will know exactly who you are, what position you are in and your lap times. You only need one transponder no matter how many classes the you are racing.

Tech Inspection:

After you have properly attached your transponder you can go ahead to Tech Inspection. Here the AMA official will check for the following during the basic safety inspection:

  • Transponder is properly working
  • Active kill switch and tether cord
  • Number plates are in the proper position (front, rear and side fenders) and are approved colors
  • Quad must fit through spreader bar (50 inches wide)

Note: Rules for the AMA sound test will be properly posted and everyone is responsible to make sure their machine can pass the test. If an issue arises a sound test may be completed by the amateur referee.

Pre-Race Quad Prep:

No matter if your quad is a 2020 or a 1997, model you will need to make sure to properly prep it for your race.

  • No matter what brand or type of tires you choose, just make sure to check that they are properly inflated at a tire pressure of 3 psi in the front tires and 4-5 psi for the rear tires.
  • An intermediate tire compound is suggested.
    • It is also best to have a new set of tires if possible.
    • While you are checking your tires, make sure your castle nut is tight too!
    • Check your brake pads. It also wouldn’t hurt to bleed your brakes.
    • Double check that all nuts and bolts are properly placed and tight.
    • Fill your gas tank up, in addition to bringing an extra gas can that is full.
Ken Hill
Pre-Race Body Prep:

ATV racing is among the most physically demanding sports, and with that being said there are a few extra steps you can take to ensure that your body is ready for the race.

  • Make sure to hydrate! You will need to drink plenty of water a few days prior to the race. Also, on race day make sure to hydrate before your race even if you’re not thirsty.
  • The day before the race is a good time to eat a lot of carbs! It is equally important that you eat before your race even if you are nervous!
  • Seat time is the easiest way to get in shape for racing, but if your seat time is limited, running and biking can also help you cross train!
Parking:

It is recommended that you arrive at least an hour and a half before your practice starts. You will first stop and pay your gate fee, which varies in price throughout the entire weekend. This is also a good time to ask where Rider Registration and Tech Inspection are located.

Campers are permitted at no extra charge, with the exception of Loretta Lynn’s where normal campground fees apply. You may stay Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, or all three nights! Please note that hookups are not available at most events except at Loretta Lynn’s.

Once you have parked, introduce yourself to your neighbors and let them know that you are new to ATVMX Racing! The ATVMX Racin’ Nation is super friendly and willing to lend a hand if needed, so feel free to ask for advice.

Practice:

Practice is offered the Friday before each race weekend for an additional fee. This practice is not mandatory, but offers a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with a new track if you’ve never been there.

A short, three-lap practice will be offered Saturday morning for each class. If you register for three classes, you will be permitted to take part in three different practices.

Riders meeting will take place right before practice starts. This meeting is extremely important and will include race details, such as the race structure and a description of the course layout.

The Race:

Race orders are posted for each race ahead of time at Rider Registration. To determine what moto you will be, please view the pre-determined race orders HERE. You will race twice for each class, with your moto finishes being merged into an overall finish position.

The first moto will take place on Saturday and the second moto on Sunday. If your class has more than 20 registered riders, a last chance qualifier will take place. The full qualifying and race procedure is explained in the Amateur Rules under section “F” HERE.

First moto gate picks will be determined by random computer draw, and second moto will be determined by the first moto/qualifier finishing position. Once you are called up to the start gate, please walk your machine to your chosen gate. You are allowed to prep the gate as you would like, but not allowed to cross the gate to trackside.

  • The Start Procedure is as follows:
    • 2 Card will be held for 10 seconds
    • 1 Card will be held for 10 seconds
    • 1 Card will be turned sideways
    • Gate will drop between 2 and 5 seconds

Motos will be 5 Laps for Pro Sport, “A” and College classes; 4 Laps for all other classes, weather permitting. On completion of your first lap you will see a green flag which signifies the race will continue until the checkered flag. You will also see a white flag when there is one lap remaining.

Post-Race:

Go ahead and hydrate again while changing out of your gear and loading up your quad. After you are done loading everything up, the results will be posted on the Posting Board located at Rider Registration. There will be a “trophy line” marked informing you of what places will receive a trophy. If you placed in a high enough position, you can pick up your award at Rider Registration. Make sure to return your clean transponder when you go! You must return your transponder in order to receive your $100 deposit back.

On March 8, ATV races will take place on the slopes of the Snow Hills ski complex. On the festive day, the organizer of races - the company "Uved" - invites everyone to participate in the "Knight's Tournament", the winner of which will receive a diamond ring.

Often, even experienced motorists are frightened by the word "ATV", assuming that it is possible to drive it only after special training. Nothing like this! Everything is elementary: the gearbox of the Uved Odes ATV is semi-automatic, that is, the shifts are carried out with the buttons on the right handle, without depressing the clutch. Two brakes - foot and hand. There is a clutch lever, but it is only needed to engage reverse gear. Anyone can cope with this simple technique, the main thing is not to be afraid of speed. On a straight ATV, it accelerates to 50 km / h, but given that the driver is sitting on a hill, the sensations from this seemingly low speed are very sharp.

Competitions are held in the form of pair races in a circle, therefore, due to the lack of contact, complete safety of the race is ensured, while excitement and competitiveness are preserved.

The main condition for participating in Sunday races is that the competitors must be at least 16 years old. As conceived by the organizers, men who want to please their lady with a ring from the Golden Fish company should take part in the "knight's tournament". However, there is no ban on women to participate in the race. The fair sex, feeling the strength to compete with the knights, can also apply for participation.

By the way, you should hurry up with the application. The race is held according to the Olympic system, with elimination in case of loss. The planned number of participants is 32 people. Registration is in advance and has already begun. An application for participation can be made by calling 265-67-39 or at the Golden Dragon motorcycle salon (Vorovsky Street, 81).

While the participants of the race, getting adrenaline, will fight for victory, the fans will not be bored either. For everyone, a test drive of children's and adult ATVs, music, barbecue, mulled wine and hot tea are provided.

The partners of the race are Cascade Motors, Symphony, Sportross, Channel 31, Double-gis, website 74. ru, Airbus, Silver Rain radio station.

Quad bike "Knight's Tournament" starts at 11:00, ends at 15:00. The ski complex "Snow Hills" is located on the Troitsky tract near the city of Korkino, to the left of the highway (if you drive from Chelyabinsk), and is clearly visible from the road.

second stage of Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011 — magazine Za rulyom

The second stage of Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011, which took place from 5 to 7 August in the Republic of Tatarstan, became, perhaps, the "hottest" of all the competitions of the quad series, both in terms of the intensity of the wrestling and the nature of the tests.

The Can-Am Trophy Russia open off-road quad series is a new stage in the development and popularization of the quad movement in Russia. This is the first all-Russian series created specifically and only for ATVs.

78 athletes from Yekaterinburg, Penza, Kazan, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk and Vyazma took part in the race. The crews received a charge of emotions already at the start: in the first meters, the participants had to demonstrate their skills on a short cross section. Mud, water and ... springboard. Not all athletes managed to jump from a low springboard into the water, and some crews were forced to temporarily stop the fight. Then the participants had to go through rally-raid and trophy-raid special stages. All athletes covered up to 180 km on the first day.

The most intense was the country-cross special stage, which the athletes had to pass on Sunday, August 7th. The competition was held separately between the first and second drivers in the test category, and the participants declared in the same crew could not compete in the same race. The competition consisted of several semi-finals and a final in each group. There was everything: overtaking on the last meters, and coups, and the sea, a huge sea of water spray and adrenaline.

In the first place in terms of the number of participants who took part in the 2nd stage of the series, the ATV-original category - 22 athletes. In the final standings table of standard ATVs, this time there were serious rearrangements. For the first time in the 3 years of Can-Am Trophy Russia's existence, Nikolai Novikov / Vadim Kuvshinov did not take the leader's cup to Penza. Ivan Reshetnyuk / Oleg Berezin (Ekaterinburg - Zlatoust) became the best at the 2nd stage of the quad series.

The race was also intense in the SSV-open standings. It was a worthy fight worthy opponents! On their native land, the crew of Irek Minnakhmetov / Ilshat Kamalov also, for the first time, pushed the Penza participants Sergey Zhulyabin / Anton Berdnikov from the first place.

The changes have not yet affected the categories ATV-open and SSV-original. Here, as well as at the first stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011, Anton Vlasyuk / Sergey Karyakin (Yekaterinburg) and Aidar Madyarov / Lenar Sagdeev (Kazan), respectively, became the best in their test classes.

And what a fight for the first place in the SSV-women standings! The participants were in no way inferior to the male athletes and fought for victory very seriously. As a result, the crew from Kazan, Alina Minnakhmetova / Olga Vasilyeva, took the first place.

Special prizes in the "Most adventurous standings" this time were given to two crews. In the nomination “For the development of hiking tourism” the newcomers of the trophy competition Andrey Obukhov / Radik Sultanov (SSV-original category, Kazan) won. The participants returned from the track deep after midnight, having walked several kilometers. The organizers especially noted one more crew, nomination "For team spirit" - Mikhail Konsovsky / Alexander Makarsky (category ATV-open, Moscow). At the first special stage, Alexander's quad took a sip of water, and at the last stage, Mikhail's.

The winners of the second stage received unique cups and gifts from the organizer of the series, ROSAN. And the main prizes, including the Can-Am Outlander 650 ATV, Can-Am Outlander ATV, Can-Am Commander ATV and Spyder RS Roadster, will be drawn at the end of the season. Details, photos and videos are published on the official website www.canamtrophy.ru.

The third round of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011 Open Off-Road Quad Series will take place on September 16-18 in Penza.

Alina Minnakhmetova: the first in SSV-women

What to hide: everyone was looking forward to the start of the SSV-women test group. Participants, organizers and the most ardent fans. The first stage of the 2011 series passed without their participation, but in Kazan the girls showed real class, surprising and delighting everyone. Participants, organizers and the most ardent fans. They surprised me with their pressure, excitement, beautiful wrestling and the ability to maintain exceptional femininity at the same time. The first winner of the Can-Am Trophy Russia in SSV-women Alina Minnakhmetova about her rivals, the feeling of fear and the victory factor.

Before the second stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011, have you already taken part in such competitions? What do you remember most about the race?

My first competition was the 2nd stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011, and since it was the first time, I remember everything. There were a lot of emotions on the track and at the finish line. But, perhaps, the greatest excitement over these two days was caused by those few seconds when we decided to overtake rivals in country cross. I am not afraid of the so-called "contact race", it is acceptable and safe enough on a buggy. I used to go in for cross-country skiing, there were constant competitions, and the spirit of competition has been close to me since childhood.

Why did you decide to compete at the Can-Am Trophy Russia?

Similar competitions, technique is my husband Irek Minnakhmetov's passion, he himself invited me to take part in the competition. I tried to ride different vehicles: ATVs, jet skis, snowmobiles, but they are not as interesting to me as SSVs.

The victory factor consists of 4 components - technique, skill, fitness and luck. What are you especially strong at?

I believe that in any sport, victory is always first of all luck. Luck is already in the fact that nothing happened on the track, nothing prevented. Skill, technique… I haven't been skating for so long, so I can't say that my victory is the result of skill. I love driving a car. A few years ago, when I first started driving, my husband enrolled me in a driving and extreme driving course. An SSV is closer to the car than an ATV, so these skills came in handy for me on the Can-Am Trophy Russia track.

Were you scared?

No, rather the opposite. There are times when I lose my sense of fear. It is always with me and in everything. This is not good: I start to either drive hard, or other risky moments may occur. Rather unpleasant than scary when the car rides in a large slope at a large angle.

Are you already preparing for the third stage?

To be honest, not yet. I plan to take a break, but I think we will definitely ride a few times before the start.

Your rivals at the 2nd stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011 Inna Martyanova and Yulia Konsovskaya have been in trophy sports for a long time and everyone has long heard about their victories. When such strong rivals - does it spur on or, on the contrary, repel?

Of course it spurs you on! I have great respect for Inna and Yulia, I like to compete with strong opponents. And they are really strong! And, literally and figuratively. Yulia was literally assembling the wheel herself at the second SS, I wouldn't have been able to do that. They ride in such a way that men talk about them, and this is better than the highest characteristics. I believe that it is always necessary to compete only with the strong. Olya and I will try to show a good result at the third stage, but we should not forget that there is always chance, there is luck. Let's see.

Anton Vlasyuk: “There is no time to be afraid!”

Last season, desperate guys from the Urals Anton Vlasyuk and Sergey Karyakin stirred up the Russian quad elite: what is not a race is the first place! Having won all the titles currently possible in quad sports, the guys have switched to rallying and since recently they have been conquering not Russian swamps, but comfortable foreign tracks. But the origins are not forgotten either. Over the past two stages of the series, Anton Vlasyuk has won two victories in the ATV-open standings.

At the second stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia, although you competed with your old trusted partner, you were already using new vehicles. What is the fundamental difference between BRP and Yamaha? And how did the technique perform in your hands?

In order to participate in the competition, you need to make a lot of effort to prepare the technique. In ATV-open, it is quite difficult to ride a standard ATV, I think that it is more intended for touring than for racing. Before the second stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia, we didn’t have much time to prepare the equipment, we managed to do only the main thing: we installed standard snorkels, protection, put in suitable tires, and removed the radiators. And all the subtleties were not possible to do. Therefore, the race for us was not quite easy to compete in the sense that there was rivalry with the technique itself, since it is new for us. Each brand has its own characteristics, you need to get used to the ATV in order to know how to quickly solve certain problems.

At the end of the first day, you and Sergey had the second best result, but on SS4 you managed to catch up. What is the main mistake of the first SS?

The track of the first day of the competition was prepared in the format of a rally-raid, I think it is impossible to judge the technique and skill level of the participants by its results. Here, much depended on the number under which the crew started. The first one was harder. There were no particularly difficult places, swamps and large fords, where one could really break away from rivals, on the track. An error in navigation - and you are immediately bypassed by rivals.

In the last 5 competitions you have 4 wins out of 5. The only crew that overtook you at the Can-Am Trophy was Mareev / Mironchik. Who was the main rival for you at the 2nd stage?

For us, the opponents are always the same, I think it is wrong to single out one person. They are all very strong, although these are amateur competitions. The rivalry in the top five or even top ten is very tight. A big plus of the Can-Am Trophy is a large number of participants, there is someone to compete with, with whom to drive.

Some participants are skeptical about the appearance of new disciplines in Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011 (the same country-cross and rally-raid), they say, they go exclusively for the trophy, and not for the rally. How do you feel about such innovations? Do I need to come up with something new every time or is it better to follow the traditions of the trophy?

The introduction of country cross, in my opinion, is absolutely the right decision, it makes the competition more spectacular. So that the support group that comes with the riders, their technical support, friends can watch not only the race through the prism of the final results, but more clearly. This gives a lot of entertainment to this sport and will help in its further development.

This season you are out of the standings and out of the fight for the main prize. It turns out that you twice “flew” past the main prize. That is, the main thing is participation?

Participation in the competition is not only the main prize, but we come there to compete with rivals, to see who is really stronger, to meet friends. The race is not only a rivalry, it is also a pleasant pastime, where everyone is on an equal footing. We have a fairly close-knit group of people who come to competitions from different cities. It's nice to see people, chat, talk on topics that are interesting to you and your interlocutor.

How do your relatives feel about your hobby?

Support, my parents go to most competitions with me. They are like my talismans: when they come, I always take the first place. Yes, and it's just nice to return to the camp after a hard day, and a loved one is looking after you, it morally gives strength.

What is the most significant victory for you?

Victories are not as memorable as defeats. If you ask about my defeats, I remember them by heart. Most of all, I remember how I took part in the competition for the first time four years ago.

What are your hobbies outside of sports?

Now Sergey Karyakin and I are also participating in the rally. I study at the institute, I work, I have my own business related to cars. I devote a lot of time to sports, and at first it was swimming - I became a master of sports and stopped there. Then he went in for tennis, achieved some success, now motocross.

What scares you the most during the competition?

Fear, probably, is only when you wake up in the morning before the start, for about two hours a small jitters appear. But when you put on a helmet, and have not started yet, but you are already going to the start, you are already completely calm. The fear was at first when it was new, it was scary throughout the race. And now you start, go to the forest, and completely immerse yourself in orienteering, in the race itself. Fully focused on the track, navigation and no time to be afraid.

And my ongoing question is will you go to the 3rd Can-Am Trophy?

We will definitely go!

Denis Vlasov's little trips

At the first stage of the 2011 series, the crew from Moscow Denis Vlasov and Ivan Rumyantsev were remembered for their quite standard entertainment for the trophy: they returned from the track on foot, after walking several pleasant kilometers through the forest. Then Denis and Ivan became the fifth. At the second stage - already the fourth. And, as the fans correctly noted, "stability is also a result."

Let's start in order. How did your passion for such competitions start and how did you get drawn into it?

It all started with the fact that I quickly got tired of skating idle, just like that, although in this short period I found many like-minded people and friends, including my friend and partner Ivan. We started to follow the competitions that were held in our region and participate in them, over time it dragged on, so for the fifth year now, with varying success, we have been trying to take part in various competitions.

And what prompted you to take part in the Can-Am Trophy Russia series. We have many participants from Penza, Kazan, Ural. But the quad bikers of the two capitals are not very active yet. The geographical remoteness of the stages of the series did not stop you from participating in the competition. Was two thousand kilometers to Chelyabinsk and 1000 to Kazan worth it?

The push is that there are no cars in the Can-Am Trophy. :) and there is an SSV test with a decent number of participants. Not all events offer this format, you can even say that you are the only one! Geography, of course, is complex and extensive, not everyone decides to go to such a distance, but, as practice has shown, not everything is so critical, you need to treat this as a small trip. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to see our vast country, its beauty! Of course, the Can-Am Trophy is worth it!

For some participants, the first failures (especially such an insulting one that happened to you at the 1st stage) can stop them from further participation in the competition. What was the first "miss" at the Can-Am Trophy for you?

Nothing stops us, but difficulties only harden us. :) Yes, of course, it's a shame that some 3 liters of gasoline were not enough to get to the finish line, but, as they say, everything comes with experience. And this is not a mistake, but another lesson: you need to foresee everything to the smallest detail. We are taking part in the series for the first time and we understood that the stages are quite long in terms of mileage, but we are used to the plains and short races, so we were a little thoughtless about the relief terrain of the Southern Urals and the fuel supply!

What is the most important thing for you in a competition? (spirit, route, organization, good reviews of other participants, etc.)

Of course, the process of the race itself, competition, excitement, but without the proper organization of the competition, this cannot happen. Therefore, I want to note that the organizers of the Can-Am Trophy series have done a gigantic job! To gather such a large number of participants, with a spread of races across the country and in a sincere atmosphere, is very impressive!

Plans - what are your expectations for Can-Am Trophy Series 3?

Once again plunge into the friendly atmosphere of the competition, have a great time these two days, ride for fun and try to ride for the result.

Ilshat Kamalov: "Never give up!"

The second stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011 was very rich in bright sporting events and heartbreaking moments. What is the final race in the SSV-open standings worth! It would seem that no one will ever be able to overtake the winners of the last year's series, Sergei Zhulyabin / Anton Berdnikov. But there is a first time for everything. On the correct preparation for the competition and the right mood Ilshat Kamalov, winner of the 2nd stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia 2011.

For your crew, the last round in Kazan was the fourth competition in the Can-Am Trophy Russia series. You finished the previous two stages on foot and without vehicles. Annoying defeats only encourage?

These were not defeats, but the result of our shortcomings in preparing for the competition. They concern both technology and tactics. We were very annoyed when we couldn't get to the camp twice on our vehicles, everyone can walk on foot (with the exception of the first stage in 2011, when Irek could not walk without crutches due to a broken leg). Getting there without breakdowns - this is the indicator of the crew's skill, which speaks both of the good preparation of the equipment and the quality of driving.

Who were your main rivals at the 2nd stage and, in your opinion, how did you manage to win?

I can definitely say that our main rival is the crew of Zhulyabin & Berdnikov. In my opinion, they are the strongest athletes in these competitions. They have a lot to learn, our crew took the main experience from them. Irek and I prepared quite seriously for the second stage of the 2011 series. We conducted three preliminary trainings, additionally installed a third GPS. For two years, our main goal at the Can-Am Trophy Russia was one - to win. And at the competition in Kazan we managed to do it! The struggle was stubborn, until the last moment it was not clear who would be the first. Fortune was on our side this time!

How is the interaction within your team, is there some kind of “division of labor”?

Of course there is. Irek is the ideological commander of the crew and the pilot, my task is navigating, sometimes, if necessary, repairing equipment. Interaction in our team is as simple as on an airplane: we make all decisions together!

What else (what test or region) would you like to see at the Can-Am Trophy?

No new regions needed! This year, in my opinion, the perfect selection of venues for the three stages. As a wish, I would like to divide the stages into: hard dirt (where a winch is needed at least for a quarter of the route), a raid stage and a mix!

How long have you been taking part in off-road competitions? Have you been professionally involved in any other sport before?

Irek is an experienced quad biker, current two-time champion of Russia in autocross. It rides well on everything where there is a motor. I got on the quad in 2007. I'm not a professional sportsman, I'm an amateur.

What moments from Stage 2 2011 do you remember the most?

At the second stage, I remember two things. The first - 50 meters before the finish of the third special stage, our crew and the crew of Zhulyabin & Berdnikov simultaneously “sat down” in swampy mud. And then Irek and I came up with an idea: do not let off the gas, navigator, i.e. I just went out and pushed the Commander (Irek and I mastered this method of pushing equipment out of the mud during training in Kazan). The idea turned out to be correct, we didn’t even have to swans! We've gone ahead! There were so many emotions that simply cannot be expressed in words!

The second most memorable moment occurred on the country cross track during the final run. Unfortunately, we were the last to leave from the start (the engine did not start right away, we lost about four seconds), but then Irek showed all his piloting skills! After the very first "bath", we competently and smoothly went around two crews, and the main rival Zhulyabin & Berdnikov remained ahead. We had the impression that we were catching up with them with every turn, but after watching the video of the race, we realized that we had little chance before the mud bath. Either go for overtaking in a mud bath, or stay in second place. But then the unexpected happened: on a sharp U-turn in front of the bathroom, Sergei made an unfortunate coup. It's hard to go first and see how they catch up with you. At first I did not believe my eyes, because. knew that Sergei was never wrong. But cross is cross! It was very nice to cross the finish line first, especially starting from the last place!

Plans, expectations from the final stage of the 2011 series?

One plan: to perform with dignity and without breakdowns at the third stage in Penza.

Denis Mikheev: "For the victory!"

Nothing decorates a victory like worthy opponents. Here they are for the ATV-open test group: strong, courageous and fearless. Last year, Denis Mikheev and Maxim Mustaev from Yekaterinburg lacked quite a bit for an absolute victory in the Can-Am Trophy Russia. This year they are again one of the leaders in their test class. Denis Mikheev talks about what quad sport catches and about the value of victory.

Over the past three years, it seems that you and your partner Maxim Mustaev have not missed a single race: where there is a quad competition, there you are. Tell us how you got into this sport and why did it hook you so much?

It all started with snowmobile competition a few years ago. From the very first races, we were hooked: the season was over, the snow melted, and we realized that there was no way without competitions. Before, we didn’t miss because of training, now we basically go only to significant competitions. What is clinging? First of all, drive. People, communication. At the races, a lot of people come together for whom this is as important as it is for you. This is its own separate life, its own whole world.

If a competition (be it the Can-Am Trophy series or the Russian Championship) after winning which you stop taking part in such races? What is your main goal this season and quads in particular?

I don't know if I'll ever stop. As long as it catches me, I will ride. As for the victory, all the victories are desired: it happens that the third place is insanely happy, especially when the race is hard and does not add up. And, sometimes, second place is not a joy. Of course, there are those who say that participation is the main thing for them ... well, this is definitely not about Max and me. You always need to move forward, improve, reach new heights. Quad sport attracts in many respects by the fact that everyone can take part in the competition. There is no need to have any special skills or abilities. Physical fitness, of course, is important, but this is not running or swimming, where daily workouts and some specific diet are needed. Here, a person at any age can achieve high results. There are many plans, I will not expand on them. I can say that we are changing equipment to a new one (Can-Am, of course) and will continue to perform.

There are many strong athletes in the ATV-open category in which you compete. As for this year's series, these are St. Petersburg, Penza, and Ural crews. Who do you consider your main competitors?

All competitors, everyone can win.

You've been with Maxim in the Can-Am Trophy since 2009. We were also at the super-rainy competition in 2009, we did not miss a single stage of 2010-2011. Which competition do you remember the most? And what?

In 2009 everyone probably remembers the rain, there was a lot of water. Kazan is remembered, of course, for its excellent organization. All stages are interesting, this year I like them even more.

How do you feel about the appearance of new special stages and new tasks in the series? Is it both rally-raid and cross-country?

I love it! On the rally-raid, the fight is tighter, we constantly meet on the track, overtaking each other. An error in orientation - and two or three teams are already on the tail. A tight fight, there is no such thing in the trophy. Country cross - just class! I get real pleasure from such special stages. I wish that country cross was at every stage of the Can-Am Trophy Russia!

And how is the mood before 3 stages. Are you ready? How?

We'll start getting ready soon, while we're preparing the equipment.

Ivan Reshetnyuk: “Getting ready for the third stage”

At the second stage of the Can-am Trophy Russia 2011, an almost epoch-making event took place in the ATV-original test group: for the first time since 2009, the winner's cup went to non-Penza representatives. Outperforming ten crews, Oleg Berezin and Ivan Reshetnyuk (team of the Ural region) took the first place. The fact that you always need to fight, no matter what, - Ivan Reshetnyuk.

You talked about other feelings: it's one thing to compete in a car in a trophy, another thing to do on a quad. By car, in the TP3 category, you were always in the place of the navigator. And who in your ATV crew is responsible for navigation? And how did you basically share the areas of responsibility with Oleg?

He was not always a navigator. From 2001 to 2007 he acted as a pilot on a prepared UAZ, but from 2008 to 2010 he was a navigator in the TR-3 class, in 2010 he became the Champion of the Urals. As for the areas of responsibility, they did not share anything with a partner, everything worked out by itself: he is the leader, I am the follower. We change during the race. I give him technical advice, he gives me advice on navigation and driving skills.

Your first quad experience - Stage 1 of the 2011 series. And, as far as I remember, you never left the first SS. What happened to you in the Chelyabinsk forests in May of this year?

I will not go into details, I will only say that, as in the well-known saying, the first pancake turned out lumpy.

How did you manage to get together before the 2nd stage? What is more difficult: to tear, that there is urine, after an unfortunate defeat, or once again to prove your leadership?

Before the race, and even at the first SS, there was only one conversation: take risks or lose everything. We took a risk, and we took a big risk. On the track, I hit a tree at 40 km/h, luckily nothing happened to the car, although my first thought was that the ATV race was over. Oleg, in turn, put the car on its left side twice, due to the unusual relief, but he was also able to continue the competition.

The Azimuth team in the Can-Am Trophy 2011 series this year is represented by three crews. And they are all in ATV-original. You are friends and teammates. And on the track? Rivals? Or are you trying to travel together?

Yes, we are one big team and in the evening we have fun at the base camp with a glass of tea, but on the track we are rivals, in the good sense of the word. And we definitely help each other.

Share your impressions after country cross. How do you like this new element of the competition?

There are also such disciplines in car competitions, I took part in trials and ice races. But a quad is different. A lot here depends on the pilot's technique, on his ability to work with his body, to choose the right trajectory for passing the track.
