The Soo Line Trail Southern Route is more popularly known as the Soo Line South ATV Trail. The converted rail-trail runs for 105.6 miles in Minnesota between Royalton and the Minnesota–Wisconsin state line east of Pleasant Valley. The Soo Line South ATV Trail continues uninterrupted into Wisconsin, here known as Saunders State Trail, traveling for another 8.4 miles to Boylston Junction near Superior, WI. The entire route, including the Wisconsin portion, is open to motorized use.

This scenic route includes a mix of woods, farmland and trestle crossings on the Kettle River and Birch Creek and includes the Northern Pine Riders ATV Trail. The Soo Line Trail South connects with the 148-mile Soo Line North ATV Trail, southwest of Moose Lake. In Royalton the rail-trail continues southwest on the other side of US 10; however, this section, known as the Soo Line Recreational Trail, is open to non-motorized use only.

Parking and Trail Access

An expansive parking lot is available at the western end of the trail, just off US 10 and 83rd Street in Royalton.

The beginning of the journey is the beginning of a fascinating story that will develop from the stories of our guide. From the very emergence of Karelia to the arrival of the Slavs, their influence on the Karelians and Vepsians, and how two civilizations and cultures intersect in the city of Olonets. A specialist in this area will indicate the deep relationship of the objects that you are about to visit. There will, of course, be a quiet time to take a nap along the way and gain strength before the upcoming busy day.

10:00 stop at the "Farmer's Estate" complex (breakfast and services of the complex for an additional fee).

In the "Farmer's Estate" you can find everything that is on a real farm - a refectory, a bakery and a mini-zoo. Ecologically clean products are grown here, from which dishes are then prepared according to old Vepsian recipes, and which you can buy and take with you: fish, bread, homemade sausages, Karelian liqueurs and much more. In the farmstead, you can arrange a full hearty breakfast to gain strength, all the most interesting is ahead.

11:30 tour of the Alexander Svir Monastery.

On the eastern shore of Ladoga, near the border with the Republic of Karelia, the Holy Trinity Alexander-Svirsky Monastery has been standing for almost 500 years - a holy place and the center of the spread of Russian culture to the northern lands of Karelians and Vepsians. Being the residence of the Karelian bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church, the monastery throughout its history was under the patronage of Russian tsars and emperors, had funds for construction and continuously grew. Thanks to this, now tourists can admire with their own eyes one of the most grandiose church architectural complexes in all of Russia.

12:30 lunch (extra charge).

In your free time after the tour you will be offered a set lunch in a cafe.

14:30 arrival in Olonets. Museum of the Karelian Livviks.

Olonets is the first Karelian city from which Karelia subsequently grew, and therefore there is a museum with a rich collection of exhibits and monuments of the material and spiritual culture of the Livvik Karelians. The life, crafts and rituals of the ancestors of modern Karelians are clearly presented, a special exhibition is dedicated to the merchant class of Olonets. Special mention deserves the staff of the museum - people who are so in love with the history of the region that they certainly infect all visitors with their passion. This is definitely the museum where no one gets bored! The authentic appearance of the settlement cannot be imagined without the famous Olonets suspension pedestrian bridges, which will be seen during a short photo break. The smooth curves of wooden structures above the smooth surface of the water will be remembered by you as the embodiment of the balance of human handiwork and natural silence.

17:00 interactive program in the most cheerful village of Kindasovo.

The village of Kindasovo is a “sovereign state”, which the Kindas people declare themselves to be, and the most cheerful village in Karelia. Upon arrival, you will immediately fall into the hands of the “Family of merry fellows”. During the interactive program, they will introduce you to the musical culture of Karelia and such words as "kantele", "jouhikko", "yoigi", "piirileiki", "runes" will acquire meaning. A special place in the program is occupied by acquaintance with the shepherd tradition and the ancient instruments of the shepherds, on which everyone is allowed to play. The inhabitants of Kindasovo are not only people, but also dolls - Katti and Vasil. They introduce the guests to the peculiarities of the Kindas meal, tell how the Kindas people cooked porridge and why they ran to the barn for butter.
