A walk-behind tractor is the main labor and multifunctional unit in your household, because one walk-behind tractor with sufficient imagination and skill of the user is able, if not to do, then for the most part to facilitate any production task. But a walk-behind tractor, like a person, needs the appropriate tools to complete a particular task, and, as we know, there are an abundance of varieties and forms. There are several types of harrows alone.
Harrowing milled land is an important stage in the cultivation of land before planting seeds, seedlings or tubers in it and has the following practical goals:
For all this, humanity invented a harrow, which evolved from a tree trunk with hard branches into 3 modern types of harrows: tooth harrow, disc harrow and rotary harrow. Therefore, in this article we will try to tell you how you can save money on buying a harrow for a walk-behind tractor by making it yourself.
Tooth harrow has a simple design, but it is necessary for harrowing the surface of milled and leveled soil just before planting crops. The phrase “Everything that is simple is ingenious” describes the principle of operation of a tooth harrow in the best possible way. A tooth harrow is, in fact, a large rake with several rows and many teeth, which, using a walk-behind tractor, crushes and levels the ground in its path. But the primitiveness of the tillage process with this device does not affect the efficiency of the harrow in any way.
It would be easiest, of course, to adapt a manual tooth harrow for a walk-behind tractor, which is powered by human or horse traction, but if this is not available, then we will start from the very beginning. And in the beginning, you will need to acquire the tools that you will need to make a tooth harrow for a walk-behind tractor yourself, and this is:
First we need to decide on the assembly scheme of our harrow. A square harrow is a square frame with metal strips welded on it at an angle of 90 degrees. The mesh harrow consists of a frame and strips of metal fixed on top of each other at an angle of 45 degrees with a diamond pattern. You can also make a wave, herringbone and chevron pattern by welding strips onto several parallel beams at the same 45 degree angle. Such a harrow will be less susceptible to bending loads.
Remember that the dimensions of the harrow frame should not exceed one meter in width, as this will be too much load on the walk-behind tractor, and in length it should not exceed the length of the walk-behind tractor handles, as this will prevent you from working with the walk-behind tractor. The optimal dimensions of a square-type harrow are 720 mm wide and 480 mm long. Planks need to be welded at a distance of 80-100 mm from each other for maximum efficiency. In a wave-type harrow, the bars are 162 mm apart and the beams are 181 mm apart, as shown in the diagram.
Harrow tines are welded to the intersection points of the bars at right angles. Often the rows in the harrow are fixed with an offset so that each tooth leaves a mark that will not repeat the mark of the “predecessor” or they are welded in a checkerboard pattern. You also need to weld all the teeth on the harrow so that they are at the same level and none of them bite into the ground more than the others.
The harrow can also consist of several sections connected to the frame/beam and to each other by chains.
The end links of the chain are welded to the approximate center of application of the power of the finished harrow, the other end of which is attached to the hitch by bolts or by welding. It is important that the resistance of the harrow teeth be directed symmetrically to the thrust axis, otherwise the harrow will be pulled to the side and it will not “bite” into the ground and perform its function. It is necessary to check whether the harrow is driving on its side, and, if necessary, change the place where the hitch is attached to the harrow.
Due to the simplicity and reliability of the design, if necessary, you can attach weights of various sizes and shapes to the tooth harrow.
The disc harrow is used for loosening soil up to 10 cm deep with a hard, dried crust in order to soften it, cover green manure, early shallow plowing before emergence of weeds for sowing cereals.
The disc harrow has a more complex design compared to the tooth harrow, as it has rotating elements, the overall result depends on the work of which. The angle of impact of the harrow discs on the soil surface also affects the result. The overall design of the harrow can be supplemented with shock-absorbing suspension and traction, which adjusts the angle of the discs.
For the manufacture of a disc harrow for a walk-behind tractor, we need:
The bar is threaded through the center holes of the discs and through the holes in the frame so that it is centered and parallel to the sides of the frame. The discs and the bar must be fastened with a welding machine. The ends of the rod are fixed in bearings, which, in turn, are fixed on the outside of the harrow frame in such a way that the entire rod, together with the disks, will rotate when moving. The harrow discs must be in contact with the surface and the sharper the angle of attack on the surface, the more efficient the harrowing process will be. The entire structure of the harrow is attached to the frame of the walk-behind tractor both by means of a rigid coupling and on a suspension system. If you make this device in smaller proportions, then you can make 2 disc harrows that will cultivate the land at the same time at different angles.
Rotary harrow is designed for active tillage up to 8 cm deep, its aeration, destruction of weed shoots, partial turning over and leveling of the ground using wheels of different diameters with rotating pointed teeth. The design of this harrow is an order of magnitude more complicated than the previous ones and has many variations. But the basic idea of a power harrow is this: pointed teeth of the same size are welded onto metal discs, and the discs rotate thanks to bearings mounted on the harrow structure. But the creation of such a harrow on its own requires good technical knowledge and engineering ingenuity from the creator, since the angle of attack of the disk and the depth of its immersion are important
. And so, we examined 3 types of harrows for a walk-behind tractor in terms of the increasing degree of complexity of their design. The tooth harrow, as you and I have already seen, has nothing complicated in its design and does not require excessive tricks in the process of creation. Such a harrow can be easily made in the backyard or in the barn without even contacting a store or specialists. But to create a disk and rotary harrow, you need experience in working with materials and metal, understanding the operation of rotating parts and the vectors of force application, which not everyone can boast of. By ordering a harrow in our online store, you will save time and energy, the cost of materials and protect yourself from failures and damage to the material. In addition, you will receive a high-quality and reliable tool for your walk-behind tractor, which will serve you for more than one season.
