How to make yourself look tired with makeup

How to Look More Awake With Makeup

Ugh, Mondays, am I right? Pulling yourself out of bed is hard and looking not exhausted is even harder. Rather than wishing the day away and pressing snooze yet again, there are few things you can do—with makeup you probably already own—to look like you woke up refreshed and properly pampered. Even though, let's face it, you probably didn't. No judgment here, only easy-to-follow advice that'll make tired eyes and makeup mishaps a thing of the past.

Below, we compiled the best tips from makeup pros Charlie Riddle and Robert Sesnek to turn your makeup bag into an arsenal of resources to treat, cover, and de-puff. Armed with the proper tricks and products, you'll leave the house looking bright-eyed, even before your first cup of coffee.

Keep scrolling for some simple and easy makeup tips to wake up tired eyes.

Mix Eye Cream With Tinted Moisturizer

Clinique All About Eyes $35.00

Shop

Dab your favorite eye cream (we suggest a cooling, de-puffing option like Clinique's All About Eyes) around your orbital bone. While it still feels dewy to the touch, brush on a sheer wash of tinted moisturizer around your eye, over your lid, and along your lash line. This way, you'll be treating your fatigue while also covering any darkness or imperfections.

Use Sheer Shadow Instead of Liner

Catrice Cosmetics Palette À Porter Eyeshadow Palette $7.00

Shop

Rather than lining your lower lash line, which can make your eyes look smaller, sweep a sheer layer of light brown shadow along your lashes instead. "Using a lighter wash [of powder] reflects light and gives the appearance of more space," says Sesnek, who says this is an easy way to make eyes appear larger and takes literally seconds to do. Not to mention, using eyeshadow as liner allows for more long-lasting results, as powder lasts longer then cream products.

Groom Brows For a Lifted Appearance

One/Size Brow Kiki Micro Defining Brow Pencil $19.00

Shop

Sesnek says that it's important to have your eyebrows properly in shape for your specific eye shape. Go for a long arch if you have close-set eyes and opt for softer brows if you've got wide-set eyes.

Color Correct Dark Circles

Stila Correct & Perfect All-In-One Color Correcting Palette $45.00

Shop

Use a peach-toned concealer (rather than your usual lighter shade) to balance out the blues in your under-eye bags. Riddle recommends applying the the corrective tones beginning at the most inner part of the eye (which is usually where you want to counteract the darkness the most). Tap on the product to make a V shape—with the point landing right above your cheekbones. Then, blend. Riddle recommends this color correcting palette from Stila because it offers several color correcting cream shades as well as powders to set.

Use a Concealer

Hide Premium Concealer $32.00

Shop

Have tired eyes? Find a full-coverage concealer that won't tell the world you were up all night binging Netflix. After color correcting, Riddle says to look for a concealer that has a little bit of color correction built into it, especially if you have really dark circles.

Avoid Black Eyeliner

Pixi Endless Silky Pen in Bronze Beam $12.00

Shop

Rather than your go-to black, opt for a brown eyeliner with a hint of shimmer. The color will reflect light against your eyes and make them look so much more awake. Plus, Sesnek says that bronze or warmer brown eyeliner can be much easier to wear on eyes as it’s not as drastic as ultra black eyeliner, which can close off the eyes instead of opening them. Try smudging this bronze eyeliner from Pixi along your lash line for an instant wake-up call.

With smaller shaped eyes, Sesnek says to avoid lining the entire eye and waterline, as this can make the eyes appear much smaller then they are. Instead, opt for eyeliner on the outer corners of the eyes—this will give the illusion of more space and a larger eye shape.

Curl Your Lashes

Face Stockholm Lash Curler $16.00

Shop

Curling your lashes is like a bra for your eyes. "When you curl the lashes it elongates, lifts, and makes the eyes appear more open," says Riddle. "If you don’t wear a lot of makeup and want an instant eye-opening effect, curling your lashes is the best way to do it." Bottom line: don't skip this step.

Widen Eyes With a Lengthening Mascara

MAC Magic Extension 5mm Fibre Mascara $25.00

Shop

Sesnek says that applying several coats of mascara on the upper and lower lashes will help make the eyes appear larger. We're fans of this one from MAC, which is essentially lash extensions in a tube thanks to five millimeter-long fibers that swiftly coat each lash.

Eliminate Shadows With a Brightening Powder

Jaclyn Cosmetics Face It All Brightening & Setting Palette $39.00

Shop

According to Riddle, setting your concealer with a brightening powder will not only help prevent creasing, but it'll also bounce off any shadows and make the eyes appear brighter. Try the Jaclyn Cosmetics Face It All Brightening & Setting Palette, which promises to blur, perfect, and brighten even the dullest of skin.

Awaken Eyes With Nude Eyeliner

Thrive Causemetics Brilliant Eye Brightener $24.00

Shop

Take a pale pink or nude pencil, like this one from Thrive Causemetics and line your bottom waterline—it’ll instantly refresh and make the whites of your eyes look whiter, brighter, and your entire face more awake.

Brighten Skin with Luminizer

Becca First Light Filter Face Primer $39.00

Shop

Use a ratio of one part luminizer and two parts face makeup to immediately brighten lackluster skin. It'll refresh your complexion in mere seconds. Becca's First Light Filter Face Primer ($39) uses translucent, cool violet pigment mixed with spring water and prickly pear flower to hydrate, revive, and scatter soft light across your face. It's basically magic for your tired, possibly hungover face.

15 Simple Eye Shadow Looks

How to Make It Look Like You Have Bags Under Your Eyes

By Amanda Parme

Changing your clothes is an easy way to change how you look, but sometimes that is not enough. Sometimes you need to change the appearance of your face, to change your disposition or age. While changing the appearance of your face is not standard in everyday life, it is common practice in the theatre and on film. Eye bags can be created to make you look tired, or as a part of old age makeup. Using cream stage makeup, you can create bags under your eyes that will fool the audience. With enough practice and a steady hand, you may even be able to fool the person standing next to you.

Apply a thin base layer of base foundation using a sponge. This foundation should be one shade darker than your natural skin tone. Do not cake the makeup on. Blend the edges of the foundation out, to prevent a line from showing-up where the makeup stops and the natural skin starts. This foundation creates a layer that allows the next layer of makeup to move and blend.

Locate the bone that creates the lower eye socket. Use your ring finger to familiarize yourself with that bone, as it will be the line you follow to create the eye bag.

Create a structural shadow in the inner corner of your eye; dabbing a touch of character shadow with your flat brush. Blend out and down, leaving the corner of your eye the darkest.

Dip a flat 1/4-inch makeup brush into character shadow. Dab the tip of the brush on the back of your hand to eliminate excess. Start at the inner corner of the eye drawing a hard line following the top edge of the eye socket. Strive for a uniform width line that tapers off at the two-thirds point.

Wipe the excess shadow from your brush onto a paper towel. Place the brush tip parallel to your hairline on the shadow line. Start in the center of the shadow line and blend the color upwards, making the widest part of the soft edge shadow in the center of the eye. Do not allow the blending to be more than 1/4-inch wide: It should not touch the lash-line. Keep a hard edge along the cheek bone.

Get a clean flat brush and dip it in the highlight. Place the brush under the character shadow, as close to the hard edge as possible -- without smearing the blended shadow. Wipe the excess off the brush. Start in the center of the highlight and blend the color down onto the cheekbone, balancing in equal proportion the shadow.

Dab a tiny amount of highlight to the fleshy part under the eye, but above the shadow and blend. This will give the illusion of puffiness.

Press, do not rub, translucent powder over the makeup to set the makeup eye bag.

Tip

Powder will tone down the makeup by almost half, so apply the makeup darker than normal, to allow it to read, after the powder.

Highlighter in the world of makeup is not new. People knew about facial contouring back in the Middle Ages, however, then it concerned only actors. Yes, and the means for makeup were the same: soot, chalk, animal fat! We are much more fortunate: you can make your face radiant and expressive in a few minutes with the help of modern safe highlighters.

Highlighter is a facial contouring product. The shining and expressive faces of celebrities are largely his merit. Not a single competent makeup can do without it, and professional makeup artists say with confidence that highlighter is a must-have tool in every cosmetic bag.

Miracles of radiance

Highlighter works wonders to some extent: it attracts particles of light to a certain area of the skin, and then reflects them, creating the effect of light and natural radiance. It enlivens makeup, adds volume and naturalness to the selected area: lips, cheekbones, brow ridges. Thus, the correct relief of the face is formed. In simple words, if you want to highlight some part of the face, a highlighter will help you with this.

This miracle remedy has another nice bonus - it gives the skin a younger and healthier look. With age, the skin fades, and the face becomes less expressive - the highlighter will help restore freshness and radiance. It has the same effect on tired and pale skin - we all sometimes do not get enough sleep or experience stress.

Where to apply highlighter

Traditionally, highlighter is applied to areas that need to be highlighted. There are 6 main areas of application - these are the most convex parts of the face.

  • Cheekbones. The most popular place to apply highlighter. Who doesn't like expressive cheekbones! Therefore, boldly apply the highlighter to the highest points of the cheekbones, moving in an arc to the nose. A slight glow in this area makes the face more sensual and embossed.
  • Nose. To make your nose look shorter, apply highlighter to the bridge of your nose without touching the tip. If you want to add elegance to your nose, draw a thin line of highlighter from the bridge of your nose to the tip, paying attention to the parts you want to emphasize.
  • Forehead. For a fresher look, apply highlighter to the center of the forehead and between the eyebrows, and to make the forehead wider and more voluminous, blend the highlighter on the temples and sides of the forehead. If you have oily skin, be careful with this trick: you can add extra shine to the T-zone.
  • Chin. Highlighter in the center of the chin visually narrows and stretches the oval of the face, and along the edges, on the contrary, makes the face wider.
  • Lips. Add shine to the dimple area above the upper lip and a little more - in the center of the lower one: the effect of plump tender lips is achieved.
  • Eyebrows. A thin line of highlighter above and below the eyebrows visually highlights them. The effect of an open, expressive look is achieved when applying highlighter on the bulges of the eyelids under the eyebrows and on the outer corners of the eyes. You can also use a highlighter to soften the main eyeshadow pigment.

12 effective ways to look younger with makeup

Foto: PantherMedia/Scanpix

Contrary to popular belief, women don't often need expensive and risky cosmetic procedures to look younger. Do you want to look ten years younger? You may well be quite successful in choosing and applying makeup, explains DELFI Viņa.

1. Avoid tanning products. It is better to choose tonal products and cream-powder a quarter tone lighter than your natural skin color. This simple trick will make you look younger and visibly refresh tired skin.

2. If your skin has a pinkish tint and has begun to show signs of rosacea over the years, it is better to use a powder cream with a slight golden undertone - this will help hide the redness.

3. One of the main rules of "visual rejuvenation" is radiant skin, so use a base with a pinkish undertone and light reflective particles for makeup. The base (primer) will allow the makeup to retain its original appearance much longer, and in addition, it will smooth out all the bumps and fine wrinkles. The face will look fresh, as if you just returned from vacation. The luminous base can be mixed with any foundation, while illuminators and highlighters should be used to highlight certain areas of the face and create “zones of shine”, for example, on the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, above the upper lip or on the chin.

4. Do not overdo it with powder, especially in areas where there are pronounced wrinkles. The powder will clog into them and visually make it even bigger.

5. If you use concealer around the eyes, choose a product with moisturizing properties, or mix regular concealer with a drop of cream or fluid intended for this area of the face.

6. In the area around the eyes, also use products with reflective particles - this will visually reduce expression lines and crow's feet. But remember - the tone of the product should be a tone lighter than your usual foundation. And it should be applied with light movements, barely touching the skin with your fingertips.

7. Choose a mascara with extra volume and length. The look will become fresher and more seductive. At the same time, remember that after forty years, you should not focus on the lower eyelashes. We must visually move the volume up so as not to get a sad look. Also, do not forget to properly separate the eyelashes from each other - we want to get natural beauty, not "spider legs".

Foto: Shutterstock

8. Try to avoid strong contrasts and obvious transitions in eye makeup - this makes wrinkles more visible. Opt for pastel shades of eyeshadow with a slight shimmer effect, and if you want to use a pencil, choose a more natural color instead of black - for example, dark brown.

9. With age, "faux blush" should also become less obvious. Here you should "act with hints" and be extremely careful so that the blush gives your face a more vibrant and healthy color.

10. In makeup, refrain from using shades that make your face look stale and tired - of course, ideally, you should choose your makeup color palette in accordance with the color of your skin, eyes and hair, but in reality, very few people are suitable for bluish shades and lipsticks. eye shadow with a greyish-greenish undertone.

11. An additional volume effect will visually rejuvenate your lips and make them more sensual. To achieve the desired result, use a nude or pale pink lip liner to outline the boundaries of the lips, slightly expanding their natural line.

12. Remember that lips do not have sebaceous glands, and therefore they become thinner so quickly and give away our age. To prolong youthful lips, they must be regularly moisturized and protected from the harmful effects of sunlight. Well, to make the lipstick look more natural and last longer - do not forget to use a special base balm.
