How to measure atv rim size

How To Measure UTV & ATV Wheels (Offsets, Size, And Bolt Pattern)

If you have ever seen a set of ATV or UTV rims and tried to find the right size to fit your vehicle or tried to figure out what tires will fit on the wheels then you may have been very confused. Looking for rim size to accommodate your vehicle can be tough when you look at the size and it says something like (10×5 4+1 4/156) which is what my Polaris Outlaw 525S has. It is not very intuitive as to what these random numbers mean but I will let you know exactly how to interpret these numbers and exactly what they do.

There are three sections to wheel size. Each is separated by a comma. The sets of numbers gives a different measurement of the wheel. From left to right the numbers correspond to rim size (diameter and width), wheel offset, and bolt pattern.

UTV and ATV manufacturers build their vehicles to many different specifications so it can be tough to find all the info you need. I have a chart down below that lists several of the models and their wheel and tire sizes from the factory. Before that, let’s go over exactly what each wheel measurement means.

If you want to go check out Amazon’s selection of wheels then you can go ahead and check this table below. They have a very nice selection of wheels to choose from.

To measure the diameter of a wheel you need to measure the width of the tire bead portion of the wheel Do not measure the outer portion of the rim or this will give you an inaccurate measurement. The numbers from my example (10×5 4+1 4/156) the 10×5 is the diameter (10inches) and width (5 inches) just like the image below.

Measuring wheel offset is a more involved process than diameter and width. The offset is the distance from the center line of the wheel to the hub mounting surface. The center line of the wheel is also called the center weld.

In the diagram above you see the offset is 3+2. The backside of the wheel, where the 3 inch measurement is located, is called the bell. It is the outside measurement from the center weld to the tire bead.

The 2 inch portion is called the nose and when you add the 3+2 you get your overall width at 5 inches.

When the mounting surface is in the true center of the wheel, there is zero offset. So if you had an even measurement on either side of the center weld it would be considered zero offset

A positive offset is when the bell of the wheel is wider than the nose. The image above is what would be considered a positive offset of 3 inches on the bell and 2 inches on the nose.

The nose of the wheel is wider in a negative offset. Imagine if the measurements were reversed in the image above and we had a 2 inch bell and 3 inch nose.

Measure from the center weld to the center of the tire bead area on both sides of the wheel. The outer measurement on the nose will be the one with the valve stem. The measurement from the center weld to the rear of the rim will be the bell section. You can then determine what offset your rims have.

The only way to change your lug pattern from what was installed from the factory is to change the hubs to the bolt pattern of your choice. Your ATV will have one of three patterns: 3-lug, 4-lug or a 5-lug and they do come in different sizes. To find out which size you need, you will have to measure the pattern. With the example I used in the first paragraph, 4/156, “4” is the number of bolt holes and “156” is the distance measured in mm.

Here is a chart to help you quickly reference your vehicles factory wheel and tire sizes.

Understanding ATV Wheel Offsets

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is "How do the ATV Wheel offsets work?" The offset of a wheel will determine where the wheel sits in relation to your vehicle. Every rim has an offset that consists of 2 numbers that are measurements. The first number is the measurement (in inches) from the inside lip of the rim, to the center of the rim where the hub and rim meet. The 2nd number is the measurement (in inches) from the hub to the outside lip of the rim. For example: An ATV wheel with a 4+3 offset will measure 4" from the inside lip to the center of the rim where the hub and rim meet, and then it will measure 3" from the hub to the outside lip. The two numbers added together will total the overall width of the rim. Here are a few pictures and some additional information to help you understand ATV rim offsets.

Positive Offset vs. Negative Offset?

A positive offset wheel has more rim in behind the hub of your ATV and less rim out in front of the hub. A positive offset will have a larger number first and and smaller number second. For example. 4+2, 5+2, 4+3, 5+3
A negative offset wheel has less rim in behind the hub of your ATV and more rim out in front of the hub. A negative offset will have a smaller number first and a larger number second. For example. 2+5, 3+4, 3+5

Correct wheel offsets for STRAIGHT REAR AXLE models?

FRONT - You will need a positive offset for the front which could be one of several options, it just depends on what is offered in the rims you are buying. You will want the first number to be larger than the second number. For example, 4+2, 4+3, 5+2
REAR - You will need a negative offset for the rear which could be one of a couple options, it just depends on what is offered in the rims you are buying. You will want the first number to be smaller than the first number. For example, 2+5, 3+5, 3+4

Correct offsets for INDEPENDENT REAR SUSPENSION?

You have two options:
OPTION 1 - You can buy rims that are all 4 the same width. If you buy rims that are the same width front and back you will want to get the same positive offset rim for the front and back. For example, a 5+2, 4+3, or 6+1 (depending on your machine) and you would buy the exact same offset for the front and the rear. This works great even though most factory rims are two different widths. You don't have to stick with that, you can buy the same rims front and rear and run the same size tires front and rear or you can get two different widths of tires and mount them on the same size rims.
OPTION 2 - You can buy rims that are two different widths. There are some rims out there that are offered in a skinnier size for the front and a wider size for the rear just like your factory rims. If you go this route you will still want to run a positive offset for both the front and the rear but they will not be the same offset because they are two different widths. For example, you would order a 4+2 or a 4+3 for the front and a 4+4 or 5+3 for the rear, it would just depend on what is being offered for the style of rims you are buying.

Correct wheel offsets to WIDEN MY STANCE?

Wide stance offsets (aka negative offsets) can only be used on ATVs or UTVs with the Independent Rear Suspension, and they are not available in all fitments. They are generally used on UTVs to widen the stance & increase stability. However, they can also be used on some ATVs if you are looking to widen your stance and make your machine more extreme and aggressive looking. In order to widen your stance substantially you would want to order a rim with a negative offset, so the first number is smaller than the second number. For example, 2+5, 3+4, 3+5. Another option to widen your stance is to use wheel spacers.

Example of 5+2 offset:

A 5+2 offset is the most standard offset when it comes to ATV wheels. The face of the rims is closer to the exposed edge and the majority of the rim & tire sit in underneath your ATV. The 5+2 offset is used on the front of almost any utility ATV/UTV. A 5+2 offset is also used on the rear of any Independent rear suspension model ATV. If your ATV has the independent rear suspension it will use the exact same offset on front and rear when you buy aftermarket rims. If your ATV has the straight rear axle you'll need to order a different offset for the rear which is shown below.

Example of 2+5 offset:

A 2+5 offset is most commonly used on the rear of any ATV that has a straight axle on back. These are commonly referred to as "deep dish" or "negative offset" wheels because the face of the rim is recessed in about 5" from the outside edge. 2+5 offsets can also be used on front and rear of an independent rear suspension model ATV/UTV if you are looking to increase the width of your machine and gain stability. A 2+5 offset wheel will stick out about 3 inches wider per side from the standard 5+2 offset wheel.

Measuring your ATV's Bolt Pattern:

When measuring your ATV's bolt pattern you will want to check both the front and rear. Some ATV models use a different bolt pattern on front and back so you'll want to double check yours before purchasing new wheels. You can also view our ATV Bolt Pattern guide to find out.

4 ways to find the diameter of a bicycle wheel

4 ways to find the diameter of a bicycle wheel https://www. sportek.in.ua

From time to time the question arises: “What is the diameter of the bicycle wheels?”

Most often, it pops up if a tire has broken through or new tires are needed on the wheel of an old bicycle. And to the seller’s question “What wheel does your bike have?” Only one answer comes to mind: “round”.

First of all, you need to define the concept of wheel diameter .

For most ordinary people, this is the diameter of the wheel along the outer (outer) border of the tire.

But there is also the concept of rim fit size - this is the diameter of the rim or tire itself along the inner border.

Therefore, it would be a good idea to first understand the tire marking systems adopted in the world in order to speak the same language with the bike shop seller. You can read about this in the article "Bicycle tires: sizes, marking types and interchangeability" on our website.

For the sake of brevity, here is a figure explaining what is measured in each labeling system. Therefore, it is important to understand what we measure and what we want to find.

So, the methods for determining the diameter of a bicycle wheel in inches and millimeters:

  1. The simplest and most reliable. An old tire mounted on a bicycle, , should have its diameter written in inches or millimeters.

When choosing a new rubber, be guided by it. If there is no tire with exactly the same marking, look at the interchangeability table and select the right size in another marking.

If a new tire is needed a little wider or narrower, check the tire and rim width chart.

If in doubt, talk to the salesperson. He will tell you if it is right for you, both in terms of size, tread, riding style and what kind of roads you want to ride.

  2. See if the rim size is written on the rim itself . Sometimes manufacturers write the size in the ETRTO system in mm: bore diameter and width. Depending on this, the tire size is selected. What sizes in inches are suitable for your rim size in mm can be found in this table.
  3. If nothing is written on the rim and, most importantly, on the tire, then you will have to calculate its diameter “manually”.

This can be done by measuring the radius and multiplying it by two.

For younger students reading this article, I remind you that one diameter consists of two radii.

Only you need to measure strictly from the center of the sleeve, and not from its edges. When measuring, the bike should stand vertically, and the tape measure, putting one end to the ground, keep the same strictly vertically, and not along the spokes of the wheel . Only such a measurement will give the correct value.

The wheel diameter itself can be measured in the same way. The main thing is to accurately determine its upper cut. To do this, you can take a level and attach it to the top of the tire, and, holding it strictly horizontally, determine the desired size from the tape measure.

After that, we convert it from mm to inches. To do this, divide it by 25.4 (1 inch = 25.4 mm) and calculate the size in inches. The result can be rounded up to standard inch wheel sizes.

For example, if the measurement is 720 mm, divide by 25.4 to get 28.346 inches. So, most likely, the actual size of the wheel, taking into account the accuracy of the calculations, is 28”.

In principle, the rim diameter can also be measured in the same way.

Just pay attention to the difference between what is measured on the outside of the tape measure and the fit size of the rim.

  4. For those who are not looking for easy ways in life, you can calculate the wheel diameter using its circumference .
