Many people who own SUVs choose to have their spare tire mounted on the back of their vehicles. If you have one on the back of your RAV4, it's important that you keep it protected. Something you can invest in to help keep the spare tire on your car in good condition would be a spare tire cover. Spare tire covers are going to help with a range of things that might cause damage to your tire. They offer weather protection against the sun and a range of other elements. Exposure to UV rays and the weather can cause cracks or weaken the rubber on the tire. They also offer security when it comes to protecting the tire from being stolen. A tire cover is going to deter theives by making the process a lot harder. If you want an OEM spare tire cover for your Toyota RAV4, you can find one here on our site.

Everyone knows the importance of a spare tire, but you may want to know more about using and maintaining it. Understanding your spare tire will help you be prepared in case of an emergency.
In this article, I’ll cover the most important things you should know about your RAV4’s spare tire, including:
It’s important to know where your spare tire is located so you can be fully prepared to use it. It’s also essential to inspect your spare tire regularly to make sure it is in good condition (we’ll talk more about spare tire maintenance towards the end of this article).
There are two different possible locations of your RAV4’s spare tire:
I’ve written instructions for removing the spare tire for different model years of the RAV4. Keep reading to learn more!
You should be familiar with how to remove and install your spare tire in case of an emergency.
The removal process is different depending on how old your RAV4 is, so I’ve written instructions for every model year.
Choose a model year for instructions on removing the spare tire:
If your RAV4 is 2012 or older, the spare tire is mounted on exterior of the rear door and protected with a cover.
Follow the steps below to remove the spare tire and cover on a 1994-2012 Toyota RAV4.
Open the rear door and unlock the latch handle on the bottom of the spare tire cover.
Close the rear door, then remove the cover by lifting it up and away from the vehicle.
Loosen and remove the spare tire wheel nuts, then remove the spare tire from the vehicle.
If your RAV4 is 2013 or newer, the spare tire is hidden underneth the rear cargo area.
Follow the steps below to remove the spare tire on a 2013-2022Toyota RAV4.
Clear items from the rear cargo area.
Locate the fabric handle and lift up the rear cargo floor to reveal the spare tire.
Remove the spare tire from the rear cargo area and replace the rear cargo floor.
Perhaps you’re curious how large the spare tire is or you may even need to order a replacement.
The spare tire sizes on RAV4s will vary. An older RAV4 with a rear-mounted spare will carry a full-size tire, while newer RAV4s will have a small, temporary spare tire.
Here are the spare tire sizes for the Toyota RAV4:
If you’re not sure what these numbers and letters mean, read this article explaining tire sizes.
Earlier in this article, I mentioned that it is important to inspect your spare tire regularly. I recommend doing this every six to twelve months.
If you’re in an emergency situation where you have a flat or damaged tire, you’ll want to be sure that you can rely on the spare tire. This is why spare tire maintenance is so important!
Let’s talk about a few easy measures you can take to make sure your spare tire is in good condition.
The most common problem with the spare tire is low air pressure.
The spare tire may slowly lose air over time. The air pressure will also vary when temperatures change.
If your spare tire does not have the correct air pressure, you won’t be able to use it. This means you may have to call an expensive tow truck instead of simply using the spare tire.
The air pressure can be checked with a tire pressure gauge. A tire pressure gauge is important to have on hand in general. Some RAV4s may even alert you on the dashboard when your spare tire pressure is low.
Next, you’ll want to check your spare tire for signs of aging and damage.
This is more of a concern with RAV4s that are 2012 or older since the spare tire is mounted on the exterior of the vehicle and is more susceptible to the elements.
The most common signs of an aged or damaged spare tire include:
See below for examples:
Bubble on the tire’s sidewallCracked rubber in the tire treadDry, brittle rubber on the tire’s sidewallBe sure to check your spare tire every six to twelve months to make sure it is in operable condition!
If you’ve broken or lost your spare tire cover, you’ll want to get a replacement. Keep in mind this only applies to 1994-2012 Toyota RAV4s since the spare tire is mounted on the exterior.
The spare tire cover is important to keep your tire in the best possible condition. Without a spare tire cover, your tire will be exposed to the elements and will degrade faster.
Luckily, there are plenty of options for replacing the spare tire cover on your RAV4. You can choose either a hard shell or soft cover to protect your spare tire.
Here are some of the best spare tire cover replacements for the Toyota RAV4:

It so happened that I have no interest in participating in off-road competitions, and tourism and search activities have come to the fore, since I am a member of the M. P. Krasnopivtsev POO. The car becomes a good helper in this right business. Only front-line roads and directions lead to many battlefields of the Great Patriotic War, and up to them there can be 200 km of asphalt and only then off-road.
Despite the "parquet" origin,
the car began to look very brutal
After the experience of owning a heavy SUV, it became clear that the decisive factor influencing off-road patency, in addition to “toothy” tires and suspension lift, is the weight of the car.
This was the reason to immediately cut off all cars weighing more than 1400 kg. After going through several options, I settled on the Toyota RAV4. There is no frame and downshift in it, however, the first and second generations have an honest full-time with a locking center differential. We look at the weight - 1190 kg, engine power - 129 l. With.! A car for tourism means long runs on asphalt and short distances on moderate off-road. Do you need a frame and a “lower bar” in tourism if the body is rigid with a short base and the engine has a decent power reserve?
Look at the sky. There are two sunroofs on the small ceiling of the machine,
which can be either slightly opened or completely dismantled
Space.
have to fold the rear row of seats while traveling, otherwise the meager trunk volume cannot be increased. After all, the fewer nodes, the less likely it is that one of them will break.
The front axle and cross-axle differential with pneumatic blocking are located in the manual transmission case, from the gearbox flange there is a cardan shaft with CV joints and one outboard bearing directly to the rear axle. Thus, there is no transfer case as a separate unit, which, among other things, "eats" the clearance.
The cost of changing fluids in the transmission is significantly reduced, because you only need to change the oil in the rear gear and gearbox.
In time. With the suspension lift, it was decided to "drive" regular shock absorbers.
Extra lug welded on to increase length.
Doesn't look very good, but it works
The 3SFE engine is very common in Toyota's lineup. It is not afraid of overheating, oil starvation, does not bend valves when the timing breaks. With a real consumption of 10 liters on the highway, one tank is enough for 600 kilometers. Excellent access to attachments. Surprisingly, the generator is already nominally located as high as possible - a trifle, but nice!
The search for a suitable copy began, and after a while I found myself in my hands with a broken RAV4 with a 1995 manual transmission. The first step was to give the car body repair and engine repair. After - painting, anticorrosive cavities, soundproofing, welding in the required places, sealants, windshield replacement, a complete revision of the wiring.
Radio antenna and tailgate canister military style
And finally we got to the most interesting part: the transformation of the "SUV" into a "tourist". Here you need to try to strengthen the advantages of the car, leveling the shortcomings. The advantage of split bridges is a decent ground clearance. Therefore, we do a suspension lift. Front - 25 mm spacers between the cup and the rack and rear springs from MPS - they are the same coil diameter as the standard ones, but the number and thickness of the coils are larger. At the back we put reinforced KYB springs from Niva. As for the shock absorbers, I decided to ride on regular ones, and then install an increased stroke, so I weld one more “ears” from below to increase the stroke. It would be more correct to increase the stroke from above: the compression point of the springs shifts lower, and the wheels of increased diameter with the most compressed springs will not touch the arches.
Since there is no lowering row, I did not get carried away with a large diameter of the wheels. Regular wheels have a dimension of 215/70/16. I installed Hankook RT03 MT tires in the following size - 225/75/16. The arches had to be widened from the inside so that the wheels would not rub the fender liner when cornering. For this tire size, I chose Mickey Thompson Delta forged wheels with a dimension of 16x8, ET and a weight of 10 kg.
Cunning. The lack of a frame when driving off-road is a big minus,
cross member for extra rigidity
Close. Minimum luggage capacity
To protect the seats from dirt, special covers are used,
which, of course, have a camouflage color
The tie rod was removed to create a good suspension articulation for off-road. There is no need for any other modifications to the suspension. As a result, clearance measurements under the protection of the bottom showed 29cm in front and 30 cm under the rear axle. Well, great result!
For a long time and painfully I decided on a winch. As a result, I settled on the "Hundred" ATV4000Lb, and purchased a block for reinsurance. The site was made from a thick-walled profile pipe and installed at such a level that the winch was hidden in the bumper. This immediately obliged to shorten the steel cable twice. The block of solenoids is located high under the hood. In general, the design came out light, but with a margin of safety.
The trunk in the car is quite small, but enough for a bag with a compressor, a wardrobe trunk with a first aid kit and rigging. And on the third door, an ax, a shovel and a lantern were located in self-grip mounts.
Neighbours. The radio station
and additional light control toggle switches
fit ergonomically into the center console. I installed a battered trophy aluminum basket on the Atlant supports. It seems that it is a little high, but you can open the hatches in the ventilation mode. And in order to remove the hatches, I had to remove the two middle jumpers.
Hidden under the trunk LED light - front (120 W) and rear (40 W). This made it possible not to be afraid to damage the "chandelier" when driving through forest roads with overhanging branches. If necessary, you can remove the basket by disconnecting the wiring connector. The light is turned on by helicopter-type toggle switches located in the center of the console.
The snorkel is a safety accessory. This does not mean that now you can dive all the way to the roof - at least the distributor will not forgive this. However, it often happens that the machine "catches" water hammer in the most harmless puddle. Therefore, it is better to spend a certain amount on a snorkel, which is symbolic compared to the cost of an engine overhaul. The snorkel on the RAV4 probably exists in nature, but you won't find one like it in Russia. I had to resort to world experience: at the international RAV4 forum (and there is one) I found a car with a perfectly fitting snorkel from TLC Prado 9 from an Englishman0 for 1KZ (let there be at least something from the legendary motor). Having finalized the air filter housing, I mounted the snorkel, having previously cut 6 cm of the pipe from above so that it did not seem like a periscope, and made another plate for attaching to the rack.
The entrenching tool is fixed to the rear door with "quick releases".
Convenient, practical, and space in the luggage compartment is saved
I refused a spare wheel simply from the experience of operating MT tires. Of course, a “reserve” is needed when traveling long distances, and within the region I have friends who, if necessary, will bring it.
I decided to install a CB radio, but I didn't want to put the antenna on the roof, so that later I would have fun jingling it through the branches in the forest, and I also wanted to have an extra canister outside. First, a certain army entourage. Secondly, there will be no smell of gasoline in the cabin. Thirdly, every liter of trunk volume counts. I installed the antenna on the canister mounting frame so that it would not protrude above the expedition trunk, and hung the canister itself on the third door. The radio is located in a niche instead of a shelf, and the PTT is under the steering wheel. No extra wires, and everything is at your fingertips. Instead of the "native" front seats, I installed seats from TaGAZ Tager - they have wide and high pillows and backs, which is very convenient on long trips.
On the very first trip after installing the engine, we went to the harsh forests of the Smolensk region, where we had to overcome logging ruts and virgin soil - a kind of reconnaissance in force.
