How to Remove White Lettering on Tires

When it comes to removing white lettering from tires, the most common kind of lettering to remove is the stick-on tire lettering.

Stick On Lettering

Removing stuck on white lettering can be done with a few different methods, and we will discuss a few of them here.

Rounded Tools

To remove stick on white lettering from your tires you will need to use a few rounded tools. These rounded tools will ensure that when you are removing the lettering that it does not scratch or damage your tire.

You will need to use these tools to help pry and pull the lettering off your tire. If you accidentally you slip and hit your wheel, a rounded tool will also ensure that you do minimal damage to your wheel.

Stick on tire letters uses a strong adhesive keep the lettering in place, which means that it can be difficult to remove. However, there are a few ways that you can make the process a little bit easier.

Applying Heat

One way is to use a heat gun or a hairdryer to heat up the adhesive. This will help to loosen the adhesive and then make it easier to remove the lettering using your tools. Be careful not to overheat the area as it could cause the tire to break down and begin to melt.

Soapy Water

Another way to make removing stick on white lettering from your tires is by using a solution of soapy water . This will help to break down the adhesive and make it easier to remove the lettering. This should not affect the tire itself, but it is always best to test in a small area first before applying it to the entire tire.

We would avoid using strong cleaning agents such as bleach or acetone as these can result in damage to your tires by causing them to dry out or to expire prematurely.

Once you have removed the white lettering from your tires, you may notice that there is some residual adhesive left behind. This can be removed with a little bit of elbow grease and a tire cleaner. Apply the tire cleaner to a rag and then scrub at the residual adhesive until it comes off.

If you are struggling to remove the adhesive, you can also try using a little bit of WD-40. Just be sure to wash the area well with soap and water afterwards as you don’t want to leave any oil on your tire.

Painted White Lettering

The other kind of white lettering on tires may be as a result of them being painted . There are a few different ways that you can remove white lettering from your tires.

Tire cleaner / degreaser

One popular method is to use a tire cleaner or degreaser. You can find these products at most auto parts stores. Simply apply the cleaner to the lettering and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, use a firm bristled brush or rag to scrub the lettering off. You may need to repeat this process a few times to get all of the lettering off.

Isopropyl / Rubbing Alcohol

Another method that you can use to remove white lettering from your tires is by using isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol. Simply apply the alcohol to a rag and then rub it onto the lettering.

The alcohol will help to break down the paint and make it easier to remove. You may need to repeat this process a few times to get all of the lettering off. Just be sure that you don’t use too much alcohol as it can result in damage to your tires.

Painting

If all else fails or the white lettering is built into the tires, other than buying or replacing the tires, your only choice may be to paint over the lettering. You can use a tire paint or even just regular spray paint to cover the lettering. Just be sure to let the paint dry completely before driving on the tires.

Techniques to Avoid

Looking around and reading other guides on removing white lettering from tires has led us to consider a number of other techniques. However some of these should be avoided!

Using Harsh Chemicals

As we mentioned before, using harsh chemicals such as bleach or acetone can result in damage to your tires. These chemicals can cause the tire to dry out, which will lead to cracking and eventually failure.

Using a Knife or Other Sharp Object

Never try to remove white lettering from your tires using a knife or other sharp object. This can result in damage to the tire, which could cause a blowout while you are driving.

Sanding your tire

Sanding down your tire is another technique that should be avoided. This can result in damage to the tire, which could cause a blowout while driving. Some white lettering is built into a tire as well meaning that you would need to remove a large amount of rubber to get deep enough to remove all the lettering.

Turning your tires around

Turning your tires around so that the white lettering is hidden on the inside is not a good idea. The majority of tires are directional, meaning that the tire and the tread has been designed to rotate in a particular direction.

By turning your tires around and have the white letters facing inwards, you are changing the direction that the tread is meant to rotate in and this can cause your tires to not work properly and will be far less efficient.

Conclusion

Now that you know how to remove white lettering from tires, you can restore your tires to their original condition or change the color of the lettering to something that better matches your style. Just be sure to avoid using harsh chemicals or other techniques that could damage your tires.

ORDERING QUESTIONS

Which product should I choose, Short Term or Permanent?

Our Short Term Peel and Stick product is designed for car shows, photo shoots and races (sprint, drag, endurance, time attack, etc. ).  It is quick and easy to apply and meant to be disposable after a few hundred miles of driving your tires.

Our Permanent Raised Rubber Letter kits are designed for daily drivers and long term durability.  These decals are meant to last the lifetime of the tire and are completely cleanable!

How many decals per kit?

Tire Stickers sell our letter and logo kits as a complete set for the entire car.  There is a 12 character maximum for each phrase requested so if your phrase exceeds 12 characters you will need to place an order for another kit.

Each tire letter kits is sold in quantities of 4 or 8, designed for all four tires on the vehicle.  If you select 4, you will receive a phrase to cover on side of each tire, top or bottom. If you order 8, you will receive enough for top and bottom of each tire. For example, ordering a "MICHELIN" tire letter kit of 4 will be for each tire, one side whereas a tire letter kit of 8 will be the phrase "MICHELIN" on top and bottom of the tire.

If you would like to order bulk quantities, change the quantity count using the button next to the Add To Cart selection

What is included with each order?

Each tire letter kit order will include the Tire Stickers product, application and removal instructions and our unique application adhesive (Permanent Raised Rubber Letter kit only).

Are Tire Stickers sold as individual letters or a decal kit?

We do not sell 'cookie-cutter' letters that will take hours to apply and risk incorrect spacing and orientation! Our tire letter kits are curved to fit our tire exactly as ordered and are a continuous decal on transfer film for quick and easy application.  The film may be split into multiple pieces in order to fit your order in standard shipping envelopes to save you cost.   No risk of getting adhesive on your fingers or having issues with proper placement of decals!

I'm not sure what size letter height to order, how do I pick the right letter height for my tire letter kit?

One of the biggest risks of damage to your Tire Stickers is ordering too large for the tire sidewall surface.  The tire has a designated tread bead and inner bead that defines the tire sidewall surface, this is the 'safe area' for application of tire letter kits.

Sportbike and off-road motorcycle tires have a standard size but must be measured.  The Calculator is not intended for use on motorcycle tires or unusual tire sizes!!

There are two methods of determining the proper fitment for your tire:

  1. Measure the sidewall surface with a ruler - Be sure to measure the sidewall, NOT the entire surface from tread to wheel!  If you have any doubt, send us a photo!
  2. Generic Tire Sizing guidelines - Use the generic tire sizing chart below to guide your decision or our Decal Height Calculator located on each order page.  Identify the aspect ratio or series (generally the middle number of the tire specification) and match to the chart.  Note: some tires may have a unique aspect ratio outside of these guidelines, when in doubt email us!

Tire Series Specification          MAX Recommended Letter Height

                   20                                                   0. 5"

                   25                                                   0.75"

                   30                                                   1.0"

                   35                                                   1.25"

                   40                                                   1.25"

                   45                                                   1.5"

                   50                                                   1.75"

                   55                                                   2.0"

Example:

Tire Size: 245/45/R17    MAX Recommended Height: 1.5"

When in doubt, it is safest to size the same height as the tire manufacturer's brand letters.  Anything larger may risk damage in cornering or standard driving conditions.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

My Permanent Raised Rubber Tire Letter Kit included a glue bottle that is not full, is this enough glue for my order?

The Tire Lettering kit specialty adhesive should be used sparingly so as to avoid 'oozing' after applying to the sidewall.  The glue bottle is intentionally not filled completely and is more than enough to apply to your tire.  Should you need more glue due to an application issue or damage from driving, it is available through our Shop.

This adhesive is not standard super glue and should not be substituted!

I'm having trouble getting the letter kit to stick, what's going on?

The most important step is the tire preparation.  You may think the tire is clean but oil and dirt are difficult to remove, even new tires have to be thoroughly cleaned!  Proper cleaning will ensure a successful bond.

Customers with raised lettering or 'ribs' on the tires also may face challenges.  These areas require using a credit card or similar object to apply pressure in areas that are too narrow for your finger pressure.  Without a contact surface, the decal cannot bond!

If you still face challenges with application, contact [email protected] for additional instructions.

Do I need to sand the tire sidewall prior to application?

Our product will adhere regardless of the sidewall surface including over raised, embossed and ribbed variations.  The Short Term Tire Lettering Kit will conform completely with the sidewall surface and the Permanent Raised Rubber Kit will overlay the surface.

Does the wheel need to be balanced after installing a tire letter kit?

Our Short Term solution is made of a thin ink that adds essentially no weight and is flush with the tire sidewall surface.  Our Raised Rubber Letter kits are only 0.5mm thick and also will result in a negligible weight addition.

If you order a flare or whitewall Permanent Raised Rubber Letter kit you may need to consider balancing the wheels again since this adds more weight.

CLEANING, REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT QUESTIONS

How do I clean my lettering kit?

The Short Term product is not intended to be cleaned once discoloration begins.  However, this can be cleaned once using acetone and a rag to lightly rub over the letters.  This will only provide ~50 miles of additional life.

The Permanent Raised Rubber Letter kits are designed to be cleaned after discoloring from rain, tire shine, snow, dirt, etc.  This can be done using a standard whitewall cleaning agent, dirt and oil remover or acetone / rubbing alcohol.

Will Tire Stickers come off with car wash or power washing?

Short Term and Permanent Raised Rubber Letter kits both withstand standard washing and power washing! However, refrain from using any automatic car wash system or similar that grabs the wheel/tire, or rubs against the tire, while passing through the wash system which in turn can cause damage to your decals.

I lost a letter from hitting a curb, can you replace this?

Accidents happen, so we offer free tire letter replacement for missing letters just cover the cost of shipping.  Glue is an additional cost and can be purchased in the Shop.

How to remove a sticker without a trace - Counter

  • Counter
  • Auto chemical goods

Photo avtovzglyad.ru

It got on some part as a price tag, or evil parking attendants fixed the door with a sticker. Something was attached with tape, covered with masking tape. Lots of options. But many have noticed - stickers remind of themselves even after removal!

Efim Rozkin

How it happens. You pull on the edge of the film, almost without breathing, so that it does not tear and you do not have to re-pry it. Do not use anything sharp or hard, otherwise scratches will remain in the memory of the sticker. But now you coped with the film, wiped it with a solvent ... It seems that nothing is visible. And it's too early to celebrate the victory. Because as soon as a little dust falls on the part, the contours of the remote will again appear! The longer the adhesive tape was in this place, the more stubborn memories of it. nine0009

The shadows of the removed stickers are just chasing you! On the car body, household appliances, tools, parts. You try solvents, brush away with rags and napkins, and they continue and continue to show through ... Horror! Fortunately, car chemistry helps fight fears of this kind.

Take Astrohim's Anti-Scotch for example. We spray from a spray can along the edges of the sticker. The glue will swell a little, absorb the solvent, and it will be much easier to catch on the edge.

Photo avtovzglyad.ru

Then we pull and pull and, unlike in a fairy tale, we pull off the ill-fated sticker, spraying the composition where the glue is still holding.

The film is removed, now we dissolve the remaining glue and gently wipe the surface with a napkin. The sticker will not remind you of yourself anymore.

And now attention! Stickers on the paintwork can be a particular problem. This delicate surface can be damaged by all kinds of solvents as there is nothing to do. Please note that not every sticker remover is suitable for removing stickers from the paintwork! It is important to warn here that it is not stupid to carefully read the terms of use when choosing a cleaner, and after buying it, try it in some inconspicuous corner of the painted part. It doesn't hurt to be careful. nine0009

Photo avtovzglyad.ru

The situation is similar with plastic parts. If you remove them the old fashioned way, with an ordinary solvent, then a complete victory over adhesive tape can be overshadowed: a matte whitish trace of the solvent will forever remain on the plastic.

So even if you have angelic patience, a huge supply of time, rags and solvent, it is better to remove adhesive tape and stickers from plastics with a specialized preparation.

Some manufacturers of adhesive products do not spare glue at all. In this case, a rubber spatula will come in handy. Pre-wet the stain with the preparation, and then drive off the glue and remove it with a soft spatula. They also have stickers on vertical surfaces, say, doors, sides or car windows: many drugs drain too quickly and, although there is an effect, it has to be paid for by too much consumption. nine0009

In addition to purely automotive applications, Anti-Scotch is very useful in everyday life - it is subject to price tags, advertising stickers, ordinary and masking tape on household appliances, furniture, windows ... In short, wherever there can be stickers and where adhesive artifacts can appear .

How to remove a sticker from a car body with your own hands

Very often on many cars there are various stickers (for example, parking passes, car manufacturer stickers, tuning manufacturer stickers, advertising stickers, etc. ) that are glued either to the car body or to car glass (usually the rear or windshield). But sooner or later, the owner of the car may need to peel them off without causing harm to the car. nine0009

Unfortunately, you will not be able to simply remove the sticker from the car. The fact is that the sticker hardens under the influence of sunlight and sudden changes in temperature, and the properties of the adhesive change. The glue actually turns into plastic. Many drivers usually start by trying to remove the sticker with a sharp knife. True, this method most often will not help you completely remove the sticker. In any case, parts of the sticker will remain, and there is also a risk that you will scratch the car body. nine0009

If you had a question “how to remove a sticker from a car body” before you tried to do it – congratulations! At least you saved yourself time and the body (or glass) of your car will not suffer. But if you need to remove the remnants of the removed sticker from the car, this note will also come in handy.

How to remove the film from the machine? Difficult but real. First, a little about the technology of vinyl stickers. All sold stickers (with the exception of magnetic and temporary ones) are designed for one-time use and have a special adhesive that can tenaciously hold the sticker on flat surfaces for several years. That is why the sticker applied by you is not washed off with a jet of water during washing and does not fall off in the cold. The reverse side of the coin is that it is also not so easy to remove the auto sticker - after 3 years the glue polymerizes, and the film shrinks and is often covered with cracks that are invisible to the eye, due to which, when you try to wipe the sticker from the car, it comes off in small pieces, and the difficulty here is also that prying off the edge of the film and catching on it without a blade is unrealistic (we talked about the fact that it is easy to scratch the car body with a blade or a clerical knife at the very beginning of the article).
