Bombardier Recreational Products is building on the successful launch of its tough recreational-utility OutlanderTM 400 H.O. ATV by introducing four new models, the BombardierTMOutlander 330 H.O. 4x4 and 2x4, the Outlander 400 H.O. 2x4 and the Outlander 400 H.O. 4x4 XT.
"Our new Outlander models include all of the industry leading features and benefits for which the Outlander 400 H.O. 4x4 received so much acclaim," said José Boisjoli, President, Marketing, Snowmobiles, Watercraft and ATVs. "The introduction of these models continues Bombardier's commitment to bringing at least one new ATV model to the market every six months."
These new models offer advanced technology and are ideal for consumers who want a sporty look and a comfortable, superior ride in a lightweight package. The Outlander 400 H.O. 4x4 XT adds a value-added package, including the addition of a winch, heavy-duty front and rear bumpers, hand guards and chrome rims to the base 400 H. O. model. The Outlander 400 H.O. 2x4 offers many of the same benefits as the 400 H.O. 4x4 in a lightweight, attractively priced package. The Outlander 330 H.O. 4x4 and 2x4 models introduce a reliable new high performance Rotax® 4-TECTM engine to the Bombardier ATV line-up, based on the powerful 400cc engine of the Outlander 400 H.O. ATVs.
Bombardier Outlander ATVs feature the innovative TTITM (Trailing Torsional Independent) rear suspension which provides superior ride comfort over a broad range of terrains and conditions. This system significantly improves rider comfort by repositioning the two independent pivot points so that the rear wheels travel in a predictable straight "up-and-down" line when encountering bumps.
Outlander ATVs also include Bombardier's revolutionary SSTTM (Surrounding Spar Technology) frame. This one-piece perimeter steel frame provides greater strength, structural integrity, better engine protection and superior power to weight ratio. The SST frame delivers a narrower bottom profile "runner", whose "slide and glide" action allows Outlander ATVs to virtually "ski" across obstacles without getting bogged down.
All Outlander models have a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) automatic transmission, full floorboards and eye-catching molded rack design. All 4x4 models include 2WD/4WD selection options. These new Bombardier models will be available starting in March 2003.
Bombardier Recreational Products designs, develops, builds, distributes and markets utility vehicles, Rotax® engines, Ski Doo® and Lynx® snowmobiles, BombardierTM ATVs, Sea-Doo® watercraft and sport boats as well as Evinrude® and Johnson® outboard marine engines and Ficht® direct fuel injection technology.

1998 PRODUCTION OF ROTAX ATV ENGINES BEGINS
Whether it's engines for two-wheel vehicles, entry into the karting sector or the production of Sea-Doo engines, Rotax has proven time and again throughout its long history its ability to open up new applications and vehicle categories with pioneering powertrain systems. In 1999, Bombardier makes All-Terrain Vehicles its next target market, putting its trust in the reliability and performance of Rotax engines, even for this demanding category of vehicle. Bombardier's first ATV model is thus introduced to the market at the turn of the millennium. The simple and robust Rotax Type 511 engine is at the heart of the ATV Traxter model. The combination of four-wheel drive, wet-running centrifugal clutch and 15-speed countershaft transmission operated by rocker switches on the handlebars, is intended to handle all types of terrain. And all with outstanding comfort – on the Traxter, the climb-through in front of the driver’s seat makes it very easy to get on. The simple operation and robustness of the Rotax engine comes with a price tag, however. Complex and costly manufacturing leads to high production costs, which impacts negatively on market success. The Rotax team is obliged to develop more efficient alternatives. The situation is on a knife edge, and when the management once more wants to pull the plug on ATV development, the crucial idea comes from Michael Gumpesberger, who at that time works in the Rotax R&D division. A completely new beginning – defective previous designs are discarded – gives rise to the belt-driven 400cc engine. This powertrain remains the basic design for ATV engines to this day.
In a 2019 interview, Michael Gumpesberger reminisces, “We managed to persuade the MD to invest a lot of energy in this development. We began series production of the Outlander 400 model with its liquid-cooled, belt-driven Rotax engine, and it was highly successful. Today’s models, like the Rotax Type 427 engine, still derive from that. It was the basis for of a whole series of engines. It started with a single cylinder, which was reduced from 400 to 325cc. Rotax had to market it to all segments. Then we added a second cylinder, and so on. We called this range of engines ‘Flex 2’. And that was how we got into ATVs.”

0003Of course not! If life is successful and the “extra” 16 thousand dollars are languishing in the bedside table, it's time to ask the price of an ATV. The quadric (in the ATV automobile classification - All Terain Vehicle - a cart for any terrain) was created just for lovers of extreme trips. Not a motorcycle or a car, but with the habits of the best representatives of these classes. Judge for yourself: two drive axles, driveline, automatic transmission, reverse gear, winch! Why not a jeep? On the other hand: rain by the collar, motorcycle landing, "horned" steering wheel, single-cylinder engine, carburetor... Only from now on, you can forget about these capricious devices and a crackling engine in one "bowler hat". BRP-Bombardier presents the new Outlander-800 ATV (Outlander 800 H.O. EFI 4x4), which differs greatly from the previous ones, and its 200 mm long version of the Outlander-800 Max for two riders.
ESSENTIAL
Why is this ATV so good? First of all, a powerful two-cylinder four-stroke injection (!) Rotax engine. 62 l. with., more than 7 kgf.m of the moment - worthy characteristics. This should be handled with care: if you go too far with gas, you will land in a puddle! Or, even more painful, on the asphalt - the quadric, throwing up the front wheels, will simply jump out from under the driver. A short piston stroke, four valves per cylinder, well-tuned injection not only provide the engine with high performance, but save a lot of gasoline - almost one and a half times compared to the carburetor version (20 l tank). A big plus is that you can’t find gas stations in the forests…
Another pride of the Outlander-800 is the front double wishbone parallelogram suspension. Thanks to it, the quadric can more confidently rush along the gravel road, bounce and not scour at the same time.
The spine frame of the Outlander-800 has not changed much - durable, convenient for compact placement of units. What is very important for an all-terrain vehicle, the Outlander can crawl on it through the mud, like on a ski. Even now, when the ground clearance of the new model has increased significantly, up to 305 mm, it will not hurt. If you still get stuck, there is a chance to get out on your own: turn on a lower gear and the front self-locking axle. By the way, thanks to the excellent cross-country ability and power-to-weight ratio, a frenzied car can pull a trailer, and it can take a lot on board. Front and rear - metal luggage racks for 45 and 90 kg load. "Outlander-800 Max" with a frame extended by 100 mm and a removable seat will also capture a passenger.
Brake hoses and mechanisms are not to be feared. They stand on the shafts coming out of the gearbox, and only then the hinges and wires. So the brakes are protected by the frame, and the unsprung mass is less. For this, the wheel disks are light-alloy.
The appearance of the Outlander has changed. The tilted hood and fender grille, narrow headlights - everything emphasizes strength, durability and contempt for any off-road. The "artists" managed to create a sense of dynamics even from a frozen ATV.
On the dashboard there is a liquid crystal display, a tachometer, a speedometer, an odometer, liquid temperature and fuel gauges, a control lamp for the engine management system. The electronic ignition key guards this good - it is not easy to pick up a master key.
SUITABILITY TEST
First test - gravel. The quadric, shooting stones, goes confidently, does not scour. Now you can throw "firewood". The speed is already under 130, and the reserve has not been exhausted. Creepy, but nice. On hillocks, the machine easily lifts off the ground, flies smoothly (good weight distribution) and lands softly, without jumps. In turn, it holds confidently even with a deep skid.
It may be bad, but it's a road. How about in a swamp? Mud up to the saddle, growls, but crawls! Now uphill over rocks and sand. "Outlander" only passes in front of an almost vertical wall. We hook the winch cable to the tree at the top - and rather quickly get out of the gloomy ravine.
Well, the test passed perfectly, this all-terrain vehicle is a real beater!

Paradoxically, but sometimes the owners of ATVs simply forget to pour gasoline into the tank. Therefore, before proceeding with the diagnosis, it is worth checking the fuel level.
It is not uncommon for the cause of the problem to be insufficient battery charge . It can be charged at home. If the ATV is small, you can purchase an additional battery. The cost of batteries for budget models is relatively low.

If the battery is good, but the starter does not work, it may be worth looking for the cause in the starting system. It is necessary to try to close the contacts, which are located on the starter relay. To do this, you need to use a screwdriver. The relay is usually located under the seat. Two thick wires are connected to it.
If you need to find a way to start the ATV without a key, you can also follow these steps. This technique will be effective only if the system is not controlled by the central computer . Otherwise, blocking will work.
If, after the manipulations, the engine starts up, then the problem is in the launch system . Otherwise, you will need to look for the cause of the malfunction further or visit a service center.
Each ATV has a stop button on the steering wheel. Usually it is red. This button is responsible for turning off the ignition, it turns off the engine . If you do not bring it to its previous position, the engine, of course, will not start. Therefore, it is worth checking in what position the "Stop" button is located.
Another security system provided in ATVs is a special check. This is a cable that is attached to the ATV at one end and to the driver at the other. If the latter falls off the ATV while riding, checks fly out and the ignition turns off. You won't be able to start the vehicle without this receipt either. If this part is lost, you will need to look for the appropriate contacts and close them directly.
Another possible reason why the ATV won't start is a blown fuse. If the ATV is small, there is usually only one fuse. It is located next to battery . The suitability of this part for operation can be assessed visually. The cost of the fuse is cheap, so it is better to have several of these parts in stock.
If there is no spare fuse, and the failure happened away from home, you can insert wire instead. This is a temporary solution that will allow you to get home. It is impossible to constantly replace the fuse with wire. You can burn much more expensive elements of the system.
This part is located under the seat or next to the motor (depending on the model). It's a small box with wires coming out of it. They are connected to the ignition coil. It is difficult to assess the health of this part, so it is better to contact a service center with a similar problem.
If the spark plug wire is broken or the ignition coil is broken, it will not be difficult to check the performance of these systems.
