The wardens recently met at a conference for wildlife management, and realized how they have all noticed a buildup of visitors at the entry points of their respective hunting reserves. Due to frequent requests from hunters and to encourage full exploration of the reserves, the wardens have approved the use of All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) within them – but strictly as a mode of transportation. Using the ATV, hunters and hikers alike will be able to discover more of the hidden beauty lying in wait - and have a great time doing it!

Call of the Wild - technological miracle - Caucasian glass at DTF

Indeed, nature calls to itself. Her beauty will captivate, and her greatness attracts. And this game most vividly conveys those feelings - real, living nature. You can just wander around in it and contemplate it endlessly, forgetting about the main goal.

6872 views

Call of the Wild is a continuation of the original theHunter, it sets a new bar of quality in the world of hunting simulators and continues to systematically raise it with each new update. Having ceased to look like an MMO and changed the distribution policy, the new part has acquired many things that were previously unusual for the series, such as finally boring gameplay, good gunplay and fair failures.

Expansive Worlds, a Swedish developer and more recently publisher of the game, is very cleverly using the new version of the Apex engine from the parent company Avalanche Studios in working out many aspects of the game. The visual part alone will leave its competitors far behind for a long time, although largely due to the niche nature of the genre.

Narrative

It would seem funny. What it can be in a hunting simulator, but here it is, as it were, and it is, as it were, not there. Each reserve meets you with a local huntsman who, by radio, will bring you up to date and give you tasks. Most of them are pretty generic, find and get them, but some are interesting nonetheless. For example, in one of the reserves you have to find out what happened to the same hunter as you. As the mission progresses, new details will be revealed to you, and the huntsman's comments will make you think about what could actually happen here.

It's rather atypical to see this in games like this at all. Plus, the monologues of local rangers themselves, both during tasks and during the game itself, are quite entertaining and well written. What are the comments about the local treasures of nature and man.

Cards

There are currently 7 different reserves to choose from. Each of them has its own unique flora and fauna, sights and attractions, and sometimes even different seasons.

Leighton Lake Reserve, for example, is rich in lakes, rivers and plains. Cuatro Colinas has lavender and sunflower fields. And in Medved-Taiga there is a harsh snowy climate with frozen reservoirs.

The map is typically explored with the help of towers, whose purpose is to discover a certain territory and, subsequently, places for you and animals to rest, places for their feeding and much more.

Firewatch some

Various activities are also scattered on the maps in the form of mini-stories for a more motivated journey through the endlessly large maps.

Fully explore even one map is unrealistic (I could only Savannah). It's better to just switch to another for a more varied game.

Gameplay

Since the main goal of the game is still hunting, you can choose from a number of the most diverse weapons: these are rifles of various calibers, double-barreled and single-barreled guns, pistols, as well as bows and crossbows.

Plus, you can always take a lot of additional unloading in your backpack, such as tents for a halt, mobile sit-ins, decoys, baits and much more.

Unfortunately, all videos sometimes have short-term friezes. It's all Shadow Play, couldn't get rid of it.

The game also presents skills and abilities, which are divided into active and passive. For example, the skill of shooting with a doublet will make it possible to shoot a gun from two barrels at once, and zeroing will allow you to calculate the angle of incidence of a bullet at a distance for subsequent adjustment of this angle for the most accurate hit on the target. Points for skills and abilities open after leveling up.

And if you are suddenly tired of just walking, no one will forbid you to ride a four-wheeled monster and finally explore the whole map, simultaneously scaring away everything alive and not alive as well.

Ballistics

In SotW, ballistics are simulated as closely as possible to real weapons. In the case of a firearm, this means that each bullet exiting the barrel is accompanied by incredible recoil, a deafening sound effect and an echo throughout the area.

And in the case of throwing - juicy tension animations, breathing from this tension and also sound effects after the bowstring is lowered.

Picture

The picture in the game is beyond praise. In addition to the incredible study of forests, plains, rivers and lakes, the game has excellent visual effects, such as leaves falling from trees or evening sun overflowing through tree branches.

Weather conditions

At times, your hunter is subjected to a variety of weather conditions: rain, thunder, strong winds, snow and fog.

Rain, as for me, the most atmospheric. The whole area is immersed in a state of serenity and peace. Only rare peals of thunder awaken and even frighten.

Soundtrack

The rustle of grass and leaves, the singing of birds and the sounds of insects, raindrops pounding on the ground, the rumble of thunder and the echo of a shot flying all over the area, along with the warning cry of animals and, although rare, but very beautiful melodies, immerse you no worse than the real thing. travel.

And the mighty winds on the tops of the mountains can't even be described in words, just listen

And this is not the strongest gust of wind

Animals

I just decided to show them to you. Although it was quite difficult and I even got a rare achievement :) They are generally just a huge variety. There are even birds and the possibility of hunting them.

Multi-user mode

You can go on an adventure with up to 8 people. Communication is possible through text and voice chat.

All this is done through a system of created servers. That is, you can create your own server and allow everyone to connect, as well as connect yourself to anyone, even if you do not have the appropriate add-on with a map, but only if the server is not a closed type. In general, a typical theme.

Optimization

The game is very good at this. Never, except on the gameplay recordings (this is because of Shadow Play and my dead prot) there were no friezes, drops and all that. Even on my Zhiguli, fps is always consistently high.

Not only hunting

But only on this topic, the screenshots are not mine. I was already lazy, don't judge :)

Between shooting and traveling, you can stay in your own "hotel" and, if you wish, decorate it with stuffed animal compositions. Although it didn't really work for me. I'd rather just walk through it.

In addition, after a long hunt or journey, you can go to any available house on the map for: sleeping (just passing time), replenishing ammunition, equipment and delivering an ATV.

Distribution policy

Fly in the ointment in a barrel of honey. Yes, the game has become single-player, got rid of the endless donation typical for MMOs, but not completely. Now the game has a system of paid add-ons without this in-game paid currency. But in the form of these add-ons, they still sell weapons, baits, ambush and much more.

You can apply in two ways. Or take the basic version, with two cards, a small but still good arsenal of weapons, and, in general, with a little bit of everything. Try it for a start, evaluate it, and if you like it, then you can already think about further upgrades. That's what I did, at least.

But if you suddenly want to immediately plunge into the content, then the second way is to take the 2019 Edition. It just includes the most necessary things to start with: a couple of the most atmospheric maps; a tent to start where you left off last time; quad bike for more mobile travel; a couple of baits and weapons.

Summarizing

For many, this project can become, if not a hunting game, then a hiking simulator for sure. In addition, in addition to shooting animals, there are plenty of activities in the game that accompany the usual movement. You can simply explore the worlds, while meeting various finds such as self-builds and notes of people who have visited these lands, or other objects. And many will hold the camera for screenshots more often than the weapon itself.

Mini-guide for beginners

How to play without getting bored

  • For starters, don't run headlong after the first tracks you find. Most likely, it's pretty useless. They are either already old, or the animal will simply run away from you. It is better to find fresh ones, then a suitable bush or tree and work as a decoy. Sooner or later, the wanted or any other animal will come and you will only have to shoot it correctly and accurately.

Although this particular decoy does not fit this reserve. See the menu help for correct usage.

  • The bushes and trees themselves give a nice stealth buff, don't forget that.
  • You have several types of game to choose from: run headlong wherever your eyes look; sit the whole game under only one bush, mercilessly blowing / squeezing the call, or, best of all, combine these two options and get the ideal. Move both fast and slow. Occupy strategic bushes, use only decoys and lures suitable for the reserve, and listen to the warning sounds of animals.
  • Shoot right, never rush. Haste will play with you only a cruel joke. If possible, try to target the death points on the animal's body. These are: the heart, the cervical region near the head (it is simply difficult to get into other parts of the neck) and the brain.

Of course, sometimes it will be incredibly difficult, especially considering the pose and side of the beast. So forgot about them for now and consider other options. Try to better target the animal's lungs. It is in most cases the largest organ on the body and the most easily accessible. But depending on the type of animal, the caliber of the weapon and the type of cartridge, it is possible to kill both on the spot and give the animal the opportunity to run a little or completely escape.

  • Don't go into big game with low caliber or simply unsuitable weapons. This, most likely, is inconclusive and will only play a cruel joke with you in the future. Look at their specifications.
  • Considering that from the very beginning you will not have any sightings, in order to practice the most accurate shooting and understand the ballistics of your weapons, I advise you to visit a specialized shooting range. There you can practice your skills by setting different distances to the target.
  • If you suddenly decide to take up night hunting, then the appropriate binoculars and night vision scope will become your indispensable companions in this matter. They will make hunting much easier with them, so take note of this. Just a reminder that the add-on with them is paid.
  • Bow and crossbow hunting is perhaps one of the most specific types of game. Requires sufficient skill and patience. You will have to get close or wait until the animal is at a distance of no more than 50-60 meters and, moreover, you will have to get used to a rather large angle of incidence of an arrow at a distance. But, I will say in advance, the result will meet all your expectations. In this game, and in real life as well, arrows have simply incredible penetrating power and terrible consequences from this hit in the carcass of an animal. With the right choice of the type of arrows, only one hit will almost always be enough.
  • I do not advise you to take additional backpacks, they only unmask you quite strongly. Although I recently ran with them and everything seems to be almost the same. Weird.

It was just different before. Although I could just get it all wrong.

  • For a full-fledged hunting with a gun, you will have to reach a certain level (then the scope for it will open). Although with one addition you will get a universal three-barreled shotgun that comes with a scope and with it you can simply forget about all the problems with weight.

By pressing a certain key, you can select the type of bullet to fire.

Finally

The 2.0 version of hunting evaluation was recently added to the game. Unfortunately, I did not have time to evaluate it because of the workload and, in fact, I can’t say anything. But at first glance it is rather incomprehensible.

That's all, thank you for your attention. Although I doubt that anyone has mastered it at all. And if you can, then you are incredibly cool. Thank you all again, by the way!

It's already night for me :)

theHunter Call of the Wild™ Guide (answers to some questions)

You can see an earlier version of this guide in one of the vk groups. Know that it was I who wrote it, and did not steal it from there. But that version will most likely not be updated, and this guide may grow.
I do not pretend to be complete information and do not claim that this is an absolute guide, here I just collected SOME tips and subtleties that were incomprehensible to me at the beginning, but I figured it out and decided to systematize the information for everyone. If you see any inaccuracies, please report them, and I will add and correct.

Which DLC should I buy?

DLC can be divided into several categories:

Reserves (game maps) :

Medved Taiga - Siberia, the only winter map
Recommended to our player, because the soul responds.
Vurhonga Savanna - South Africa
Here you can hunt a lion.
Parque Fernando - South America
Going for a cougar and a big deer. At the moment with discounts the cheapest card.
Yukon Valley - Alaska
The second cheapest card. Nice, worth taking.
Cuatro Colinas Game Reserve - Iberian Peninsula
This is Spain and Portugal if anyone doesn't know.

Further maps that are not yet heavily discounted:
Silver Ridge Peaks - Rocky Mountains, America
Probably the best mountain view in the game.
Te Awaroa National Park - New Zealand
For those who want to be as far away from the familiar as possible.
Rancho del Arroyo - America, California
Wild West style, for those who love it
Mississippi Acres Preserve - America
You can walk on an alligator. They say the map is very buggy, and the crocodile is unkillable.

In general, you probably won't need all of these. The game has 2 initial cards, which are already enough for a long time. Do not grab all the cards at once, choose 2-3, to which the soul lies. And then you'll know for yourself if you need more.

Weapons :

Weapon Pack 1 - small rifle, bow, crossbow
The rifle is generally useless, you have to go with shot for small things.
The bow is an almost silent weapon, it does not frighten the beast.
Crossbow has a monstrous killing power, but works at a very short distance. Players ask “where does the ancient weapon come from so powerful” - yes, because the arrow weighs many times more than the bullet, it has a huge momentum, so everything is correct.
Weapon Pack 2 - pistol, rifle and shotgun, whose characteristics are WORSE than those of the default ones. True, the pistol has a shot, but the pistol is buggy and does not shoot from the aiming mode. The gun does not change ammo. Weapons give points for a kill not of their type, so the guns are not pumped. It is not clear how this could have been released.
Weapon Pack 3 - they say this pack is good, but I did not check it.
Wild Goose Chase Gear - gun and goose gear. DO NOT TAKE. The reviews are extremely negative, the dlc is broken, the weapon has a free counterpart.
Duck and Cover Pack - weapon, bait and duck cover. DO NOT TAKE. Similarly, the dlc is not working, the ducks do not spawn and do not react to the call. You can hunt ducks without it.
Smoking Barrels Weapon Pack - weapons from the 19th century. Take only if you are interested in this style itself. Nothing special for gameplay.

Hunting Lodges :

Trophy Lodge Spring Creek Manor is a classic European style hunting estate.
Saseka Safari Trophy Lodge is an African style hotel, physically larger, although I wouldn't say better.

This content is far from mandatory and has questions. Houses cannot be rebuilt somehow, they are the same for all players. Yes, you can place your trophies in them, but to be honest, few people will go to your house to look at your merits. You can’t go out of the houses to the courtyard, there are no activities there. It seems that the content is necessary in its idea, the hunter should have a trophy house. But the authors forgot to fill it with meaning.
Saseka is larger in size, but the manor is closer and more understandable to our player. One of the two will be enough.

Tents & Ground Blinds :

Tents & Ground Blinds are fast-travel tents, essentially deployable bases for comfort. It's wrong that they are sold separately, but yes, you need to take it.
ATV Saber 4X4 ATV. It is mandatory to buy, without it it will be just bitter to play. Maintenance-free, they can be replaced indefinitely.
Treestand & Tripod Pack - portable towers. Dubious content for those who find it interesting.
High-Tech Hunting Pack Night hunting visor and bow scope. Few will need it.
Bloodhound is a hunting dog that will find downed game. They say there are bugs. But you can pump a dog, give it a name, feed it from your hand. It fills some void in the game.

TOTAL
It is not necessary to take all the content, it is not always working, sometimes redundant or duplicate.
You need to take a couple of cards for which you have a soul, an ATV, tents and one pack of weapons.
You can (but not necessarily) take a house and a dog.
You do not need to take change and hunting for a bird. In general, a lot of problems with birds have been noticed in the game.

Tips and Tricks

● Are all these wildlife preserves real or not?
These are fictional locations. Perhaps that is why their names are so stupid even for their languages.
Hirschfelden, Yukon, and Mississippi exist, but precisely these territories do not exist.● Map opening, base, resupply
Bases (as well as tents) can be teleported, but this only applies to visited houses, their icon is white. Green home icon - you haven't been there yet.

● How to make money?
There are some hot spots in the game. Select Hirschfelden and head west to the lakes. Bison are found there, they almost always go in herds and are rather slow. With a good weapon, you can fill up the whole herd and get hold of it.
Money is given not only for harvested animals, but also for completing story missions. Assignments boil down mainly to visiting places, finding tracks, killing and photographing certain game. Moreover, more money is given for tasks.

● About donated weapons
In this game, donated guns do not give a particularly big advantage, all weapons in the game are more or less realistic, so there is no imba. Donation barrels have default counterparts, however, they are unlocked after many hours of play and cost in-game currency. The player receives a donated weapon almost immediately - not at the start of the game, but it can be picked up at the very first hunting base.

● Why are some weapons unavailable?
Weapons are unlocked as you level up. In addition, you need proficiency points for a certain type of weapon - they are issued for killings from this type.
Some barrels are story-locked, for example one gun requires completing Medved Taiga quests.

● How to choose weapons and ammunition?
Beasts and weapons are ranked by level from 1 to 9. Beasts of level 9 are the largest and strongest, they are almost indestructible for most weapons.
You need to carry 3-4 weapons with you, but they should all be for a different occasion, and not duplicate each other.
▪ Shotgun or shotgun. This is for small nimble prey: rabbits, birds. The advantage is that you do not need to accurately aim, the expansion decides. But such a weapon will not kill anyone else with a gun.
▪ The rifle is a medium prey weapon: boar, lynx, fox, coyote. There is little or no choice of cartridges for starting rifles.
▪ Shotgun - for medium and large prey. That is the main weapon. Don't forget that you can put a sniper scope on a gun too.
It is very important to load your shotgun correctly. You don't have to understand cartridges and calibers in real life, just buy cartridges that are compatible with this gun (there is a “compatible” button in the store when you enter your weapon). Shotgun cartridges are divided into those that have a high penetrating power, and those that have a high expansion, i.e. they expand in the victim's body. Expansive can bring down medium-sized deer into the lung. But on a really large animal, you will simply “not break through”. Elk, bear, and bison require ammo with a piercing rating of at least 40.
You don't even have to try to shoot a big one with a rifle.
▪ Crossbow - frontal finishing off large prey

● Where should the beast shoot?
Forget headshots. These are not people, they have brains the size of a walnut, there is almost a solid bone there. In addition, the head is small, you will not get into it. Aim for the heart, lungs. Killing the beast on a point is also an option. By the way, this issue was discussed on the forum of real hunters, and yes, indeed - a bullet that hit the ass collects a bunch of organs on the way.
Shoot the bison in the scruff of the neck, he needs to break the spine. Or again, heart, lungs.

● Can I hunt at night?
It is possible, but rather unpleasant. For night hunting, you need to turn on the lantern on your head - L. It does not scare animals, this is a game convention. On the Medved Taiga map, night visibility is quite good because of the white snow. On other maps, it is better not to climb, unless on assignment.

● What is the arrow on the compass?
This is the direction where the wind blows your scent. If in the direction of the beast, then you will be noticed.

● Some subtleties
You can click on the mouse wheel and it instantly removes and puts on a sniper scope. You need to remove it if the beast is close.
Long press R means switching cartridge type. To do this, of course, you need to pre-purchase them, pick them up from the warehouse, and also load them into a cannon in the menu. But some guns are buggy, where the change of cartridges takes place from scratch.
You can whistle the beast - it will slow it down for a couple of seconds, then scare it. That is, it will give one fleeting chance for a successful shot.
There is also a button for a short breath hold - this will reduce the shaking of the sight for a few seconds.

● Is it possible to crush an animal with an ATV?
You can't. I personally checked that the physics of the game works in such a way that any impact with the beast is considered damage, i.e. you will die yourself.

● Where are the pending trophies that were not stuffed right away?
To see them, you need to have a dlc about a house (mansion or African). Inside the house, you can call up a submenu with set aside animals and either make stuffed animals out of them or destroy them.
