The 2022 Jingle Bell Run for arthritis is back in town bringing holiday cheer to Tampa Bay at 9 a.m. Sunday, December 4, 2022. An expected 1000 runners, walkers and cheering fans will gather at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, FL to join the movement to conquer arthritis and raise $100,000. This annual, holiday-themed 5K fun run/walk and one-mile walk encourages participants to dress in festive costumes and get moving to raise awareness and funds to cure America’s #1 cause of disability.

Taking place in more than 100 cities nationwide, the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run benefits the nearly 60 million Americans (1 in 4 adults), including 300,000 children (1 in every 250), living with arthritis every day. Monies raised help fund cutting-edge research for new treatments, working toward a cure, advocating for health care access, and helping those living with arthritis score everyday victories, one step at a time.

Dr. Youstina Bolos, Medical Honoree shared, “Arthritis is a debilitating disease especially when effecting the ankles and feet. With 800,000 Tampa area residents living with arthritis, I’m honored to support the Jingle Bell Run Tampa Bay this December and help raise funds to find a cure for all of our neighbors and friends.”

Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain While Resting

od Hugo

Here are some tips to help you deal with shopping, parties, travel and greetings.

For many, a holiday is a time of joy and celebration.

But for some, this time of year can be difficult.

Living with a disease like rheumatoid arthritis is something that can't make the holiday season so bright. nine0005

But that shouldn't be the case.

People living with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) just need to prepare for vacation events a little differently than those living without pain or disease.

Some things, such as cold winter weather, are beyond human control. Sometimes work and seasonal bustle can not always be avoided either.

But with planning, self-awareness, mindfulness and self-care, the chaos and emotions of the holidays can be better controlled and mitigated. nine0005

Some useful tips

One thing that can cause stress for people with RA during the winter holidays is travel.

Getting ready for your vacation can help you reduce stress and discomfort.

One important piece of advice is to get on the plane as soon as possible.

Here are some more helpful tips:

  • Ask for help with your luggage when you need it.
  • Take a pillow for comfort on an airplane if you are flying. nine0038
  • Wear a face mask and protective equipment to protect your skin from germs.
  • Choose healthy food at rest stops or airports.
  • Find out about TSA drug rules.
  • When traveling by car, get comfortable and stop frequently to stretch.

Painless Gift Wrapping

Gift wrapping is another pain point (literally) for people living with rheumatoid arthritis. nine0005

One option is to use colorful gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

If gifts need to be wrapped, ask if the store or mall offers gift wrapping services.

Or ask a friend or child to help you wrap.

Some non-profit organizations, such as animal shelters and health organizations, will store gifts for a small donation during the holidays.

This holiday season, you can also go green and ditch wrapping paper or gift bags entirely. nine0005

You can also use arthritis scissors. There are different models of scissors that are ergonomically designed for people with joint problems and difficulty in moving or gripping.

Don't forget to take care of yourself

It's important to remember to take care of yourself during busy holidays.

Here are some ways to do this:

  • Make time for yourself, even if you are visiting friends and family.
  • Sit by the fire and enjoy a cup of herbal tea. nine0038
  • Take a steam shower or hot bath.
  • Diffuse your favorite aromatic essential oils.
  • Book a massage or acupuncture.
  • Pamper yourself with your favorite body lotion.
  • Practice deep breathing, focusing on gratitude.
  • Relax in the afternoon after a busy Christmas shopping day.

Shopping suggestions

When shopping, it's important to be on the right track.

Wear any assistive bras you may need (wrist, foot or knee).

Sit down when you need to. If necessary, use a cane, scooter or wheelchair.

Park in free parking spaces at the mall if you have a parking sign.

Use the escalators or elevators in stores or stores, if available.

Ask a store employee, friend, child or spouse to carry your bags in the car. nine0005

Women should wear a bag that does not put too much pressure on their wrists or shoulders.

Party planning

Sometimes holiday parties, meals and get-togethers can become a source of stress and often physical pain.

If you are planning a party, don't try it alone.

Here are some tips to make your party preparations easier:

  • If you can afford cleaning, hire housekeepers to help you prepare the house. Or ask family members or a spouse to help you with cleaning and cooking. nine0038
  • If you are visiting, be sure to sit down when you need to and don't forget to eat.
  • Take your medications appropriately and have over-the-counter remedies on hand.
  • If you are a guest at a party, please contact the host or hostess in advance to let them know you need a place to sit.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and bring any adaptive or assistive devices with you. You can always leave your cane, bracelet or heating pad in the car and pick it up later. nine0038
  • Stay hydrated if you drink alcohol and make sure you are allowed to drink while taking your rheumatoid arthritis medication.
  • If you are taking medication that suppresses your immune system, avoid handshakes and hugs at festive events. Shaft can be a good alternative.

Tickets and gifts

Writing holiday cards can be a pain - literally.

Order postcards online, print labels or forget about paper postcards altogether and send e-cards online instead. nine0005

If you're looking for gifts for someone with rheumatoid arthritis, there are plenty of arthritis-focused guides online.

Some options may include heating pads, comfort pads, ergonomic slippers, pain relief lotions, anti-inflammatory teas and pill cases.

Donating to an arthritis organization on behalf of a loved one is also a nice gesture during the holidays. Just like walking or running at events like the Jingle Bell Run Arthritis Foundation if you are physically able to do so. nine0005

Holidays can be stressful for everyone, but stress is a known trigger for RA flare-ups.

So calm down, remember your self-control and try to spend your holiday as best as possible, without pain and joy.
