Many in Jonestown hope to turn back the clock
Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was once one of the centers of the US steel industry. Most of its inhabitants supported Donald Trump in the elections. Success in America's so-called rust belt ensured the New York businessman won. BBC Russian Service correspondent Oleg Antonenko visited the city and spoke with its residents about their hopes for the new president.
The rising rumble on the morning of May 31, 1889, was a harbinger of disaster for the people of Jonestown: 20 million tons of water hit the industrial city after a dam burst 20 kilometers upstream of the Conema River.
The earthen dam was built in the middle of the 19th century. Its construction was associated with the creation of a system of canals, which then played an important role in the transportation of goods. But by the time construction was completed, booming railroads made the dam itself and the man-made lake unnecessary.
The authorities transferred the dam to private hands in 1879. The picturesque lake created with her help attracted the richest people in the country. Cottages appeared on its banks, membership cards to the Southfork Fishing and Hunting Club cost 2,000 dollars. Their owners were, among others, steelmaker, multimillionaire and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and billionaire banker Andrew Mellon.
The dam was looked after very badly.
A storm, heavy rainfall and a clogged spillway system all led to the tragedy of May 31, when the dam burst.
A forty-meter wall of water rushed, destroying the villages along its course, until it reached Jonestown. More than 2200 people died.
But Jonestown itself began to die out earlier. One of the country's first steel towns, it was part of the industrial belt of the Midwest and East Coast of the United States. But the recession has turned it into a rust belt.
Overproduction in the 70s of the last century led to the collapse of the market. The steel and iron works that formed the backbone of the city's economy were closing in Jonestown and the neighboring cities of Pennsylvania and Ohio.
At the end of 1983, the Bethlehem Steel company ("Bethlehem steel") immediately fired 2.5 thousand people, 6% of the then population of the city.
The same year saw the release of All The Right Moves, a film starring Tom Cruise, which was filmed in Jonestown and Pittsburgh. Cruise's hero is the star of the local football team. He dreams of escaping from a remote western Pennsylvania town that is in crisis.

People left, the city was empty: if at the beginning of the 20th century its population was approaching 70 thousand, today there are about 20 thousand inhabitants.

"When I was growing up in Jonestown, we had a flood here in the late 1970s. It was a recession. All the steel mills were empty. I remember I couldn't find a job back then... I applied for the only job they wanted get 300 more people. Unemployment was 28%. But the worst thing was that people began to leave," says Bill Polachek, owner of JWF Industry.

He comes from a family of immigrants from Czechoslovakia.
Bill's father - John Polachek, trying to feed nine children, used to work at the Bethlehem Steel plant, one of the three largest steel and shipbuilding companies in the United States.
Now his son occupies the premises of the factory where his father worked.
Now home to a steel fabrication company owned and operated by Bill Polachek. He started his business in a garage, being the only worker.
Nearly 500 people work in his factories. His company is an island of industrial activity in a city of empty factories.
"Our business is doing well. But we are an unusual business. Our income is low because there is little business activity around and competition is strong. But competition is normal. Worse, the business around is not developing. life," he laments.
Bill is a former Democrat, but like many here, he recently changed party affiliation and registered as a member of the Republican Party.

He hopes that Trump will keep his promises to allow oil and gas production, which the United States is rich in.
And in a factory like his, there will be many more jobs and workers.
It's not fair, he says, when US authorities allow the import of raw materials but prohibit their production and export.
"We were one of the two or three major steel towns in the whole country. Johnstown, Pittsburgh and some other cities. 25,000 people worked in the steel plants in the 70s of the last century. And today we have There aren't even 25,000 of us in all of Jonestown," says Bill Regal.

He is a computer network engineer and is not directly involved in production, but it is also difficult for him without working factories.
"I expect Trump to keep his promises. In particular, he promised to limit a number of trade agreements, restrict imports, return manufacturing-related jobs. Until you have a basic industry, the service market will not survive," he notes.
His namesake and friend Bill owns a small company in Jonestown. When he starts talking about the government, his hands shake and he starts to stutter with excitement.
"We are the masters here, and we must obey their rules, which they made up," he says.
"Smoke here," he insistently advises my colleague who wants to leave the office.
"Do you want to smoke outside because you want to, or because it's required by the rules?" he continues to ask.
"To hell with their rules! I'm the boss here, and I set them up in my place," he exclaims, but also goes outside.
American individualism and federalism - this was America, and this is what those who meet in Jonestown want to see it. European regulation is a nightmare for the vast majority of those who do not live in American metropolitan areas and in the liberal west or northeast of the country.
