Canadian farmers have decided to follow the legal path trodden by their American counterparts in the fight for the right to repair farm equipment on their own, writes Lee Hart, editor of Cattleman's Corner, in an article on Grainews.ca.

...Farmers have a lot of complaints about the sellers of "innovative" agricultural equipment that gets up during the harvest, because the machines may have needed a fairly simple reset of computer codes or minor repairs, but equipment from the dealership take too long to get there, and the farmers themselves don't have a troubleshooting guide.
Northern Alberta farmer Cole Sigle told his story of his combine idling for two hours before a dealership technician arrived at the farm to diagnose the problem and reset the system.
Siegel says it was a five-minute job, and during those hours of waiting, he could have harvested about $20,000 worth of rapeseed (canola). Thus, he suffered considerable losses.
There is a similar story in southern Alberta. Last fall, Hanna Konshu was harvesting wheat on a family farm east of Calgary when the monitor of a Case IH 9 combine230 three error codes were displayed. The instruction manual was only advice to call the equipment dealer and not a word on how to try to deal with the problem yourself.
Konshu continued to combine, the error codes appeared several times, and finally the combine went into reduced power mode. Hanna stopped work, the next day she called the dealership, a technician came a few hours later and cleared the codes, but did not provide any information on what started the malfunction.
The diagnostic and repair bill was about $1,300. The farmer estimated that she wasted four to six hours of harvester work. “In weather like this at harvest time in Alberta, every hour counts,” she said.
And there are many such stories, says Jeff Backman, who coordinates the so-called "Right to Repair" initiative at the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commission, which represents the interests of some 17,000 farmers in the province. The initiative was launched in December last year.
“At first we were going to do a survey of our members to collect stories about renovation problems, but the stories just came running to us,” he says.
Backman says that while software and manuals are available in some cases, the instructions are not cheap. For example, according to the company's online technical information store, a copy of the technical manual for the diagnosis of John Deere combines models 9The 570 STS, 9670 STS, 9770 STS, and 9870 STS in paper form or on CD cost $1,052.
35. A repair manual for the same models, sold separately, costs $266.64 for hard copy or CD copy and $253.31 for download. “And if manufacturers have more than one line of equipment on the farm, they will have to pay for the management of each company,” Backman says.
And here is the opposite point of view. The newly formed North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA), which represents about 4,000 farm equipment dealers and other industry representatives in Canada and the United States, says there is no real conspiracy to deny farmers repair instructions.
Eric Wareham, vice president of NAEDA, says growers and dealers are encouraging farmers to do their own maintenance and repairs. But there is a lot of misinformation, he says, which has prompted several politicians in Canada and the United States to consider creating legislation to improve the right to regain access when, in his opinion, access is already there.
“There is misleading information that non-branded equipment owners and repair shops are being denied access to parts, tools and equipment manuals to perform repairs,” says Wareham.
- Claims that people can't get manuals for their tractors or farm equipment are "absurd." A 30-second Google search has led many legislators to conclude how disingenuous this claim is.”
Wareham says dealers and manufacturers are supporting farmers or independent repair shops with maintenance and repairs. In fact, surveys show that, on average, a car dealership sells about 60 percent of its parts.
“In other words, most repairs are done by someone other than the dealership,” says Wareham. - This is an important point, because it clearly shows that there is no monopoly on repairs. The real concern is the so-called right to repair, leading to equipment modifications.
If equipment and machines are modified, this can lead to safety issues, possibly increased engine emissions, which will affect the environment, and liability issues. Suppose some modification has been made that the dealer is unaware of, and a piece of equipment is later sold to a new owner who is also unaware of the modification.
And then there is some breakage due to modification. So, the question then becomes, who is responsible for these repair costs?”
Wareham says NAEDA wants to shift the discussion from "the right to repair," which hints that dealers and manufacturers are violating someone's rights, to another motto, "repair done right." It will be a concerted campaign to provide dealership personnel and customers with "hard-to-reach information about what our industry is actually doing to support repairs, and that is the foundation that will change that conversation in the long term," says Wareham.
Key components of the Repair Done Right campaign, launched this spring, include dealer training sessions as well as customer outreach programs to ensure all parties are aware of all materials and resources available to customers and third parties in line with industry commitment to support repairs clients.
Wareham noted that it is important for all industry players - dealers and farmers - to work to increase the number of trained technicians who can provide maintenance and repair services to manufacturers.
“The average dealership needs to hire five additional technicians to meet customer demand,” says Wareham. - However, the throughput problem is not limited to this. Without rural broadband, the dealership cannot use remote diagnostics. Additional staff and rural broadband are two issues that limit the dealership's ability to meet all customer needs, especially during peak periods. It should be talked about."
NAEDA continues its fellowship program, which has already awarded nearly $1 million in scholarships to encourage engineering education at Canadian colleges and institutes.
