Asiatique The Riverfront

The Sirimahannop Tall Ship, a new landmark on the Chao Phraya River

was designed to replicate and commemorate the legacy of the legendary “Thoon Kramom” ship, a 475-ton three-mast ship which was the largest vessel in Siam that brought prosperity from across the seas of the west to the Kingdom of Siam. The Thoon Kramom was built in the early trading period between Siam and western countries following King Mongkut (Rama IV)’s pursuit of free trade which subsequently led to the signing of the Bowring Treaty with Great Britain resulting in trade and bilateral ties.

When Siam had to face invasion from western countries, the Thoon Kramom, already docked and ready to operate in the northern part of Phra Chulachomklao Fort, was thus converted into a warship and played a crucial role in defending the Chao Phraya estuary. It later was assigned to the naval apprentice school before being decommissioned. On March 21, 1923, the Thoon Kramom was the last three-masted ship used by the Royal Thai Navy for warfare.

Museum

The interior of the Sirimahannop Tall Ship has been decorated with artwork portraying Thai civilization and history, as well as the rich heritage of the first industrial and international trading area in Siam.

Exquisite Restaurant and Bar

Managed by the professional team of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, Sirimahannop invites you to enter a vibrant world of gastronomy and mixology. The ship showcases liquors and spirits from all around the world, specializing in rum and creative cocktails inspired by Thai woods and tropical fruits. Complementing our creative beverage list, Sirimahannop also invites you to take a culinary journey with a series of delectable dishes, including Thai and European seafood, which reflects the ship’s historic global voyages. To experience the recommended specials, Captain's Set Menu is also available when booking in advance. All dishes are crafted with fine ingredients to ensure impeccable gastronomic experiences.

Heritage Alive

The ‘Heritage Alive’ concept is reinvigorating a lifestyle destination for Thais and tourists along the Chao Phraya riverside, reflecting and reviving the preservation of an important historical and economic area. The story of Charoen Krung Road was chosen as it runs along ASIATIQUE The Riverfront and resonates as a significant artery for Bangkok from its earliest days, highlighting the prosperity that was achieved from international trade during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The site where ASIATIQUE now stands was the first and largest international trading port in Siam, making it the gateway to global commerce which played a large role in integrating western and eastern concepts which still connects the past from the reign of Rama V to the present.

Living Museum & Art Festival

Journey through Memory Lane at the Living Museum, where visitors can experience and learn more about Siamese civilization, the local way of life, and arts and culture handed down from generation to generation. The Living Museum is a unique exhibition which uses innovative and interactive technologies, including augmented reality visuals for the first time through 59 attractions across three zones: River of Relations, From the River to the Land of Prosperity, and Thai Cultural Heritage.

Experience an Art Festival which features culture, history, and the local way of life which are integrated into paintings, street art, sculptures and many more, providing a new way to appreciate artistic creations and providing the perfect backdrop for visitors who are keen on taking pictures and ‘checking-in’ on their smartphones.

10 unusual ideas for those planning a trip to Bangkok - Tourism Authority of Thailand

Bangkok is one of the busiest places on the map of Thailand: tourists will not be bored in a city that never sleeps. After the weakening of the pandemic, the capital of the kingdom returned to a full life: a lot of new things have happened in it lately. And that's one of the main reasons why Bangkok remains the top city in DestinAsian's 2022 Readers' Choice.

Most travelers are familiar with Bangkok's main tourist attractions, including temples and important historical sites such as Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram (Phra Kaew), Wat Pho, Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), the Grand Palace, shopping centers and Chatuchak, which is open on weekends and considered one of the largest street markets in the world. But Bangkok has a lot to offer - the city guide will show you activities and locations that tourists may not have known about before.

  1. Running through the streets of the capital

Early in the morning in Bangkok, life is already in full swing: sellers begin to open street food stalls, and city residents go for a walk. Benjakitti Park has a new part that resembles a natural wetland, perfect for a morning jog. Unlike other public parks, Benjakitti is a unique combination of Art Nouveau, minimalism and naturalism. Here you can walk, run or ride a bike on a specially created bike path. The main attraction is the almost two-kilometer walking path with paths crossing each other and beautiful views of the wetlands. The park is just a 15-minute walk from Asok BTS Skytrain and Sukhumvit Underground Stations.

  1. Vintage markets

Bangkok is a paradise for vintage lovers, be it art, furniture or clothing. At the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Zones 5 and 6, you can find vintage t-shirts, jeans and bags, as well as new handmade clothes. In search of art and antiques, you should go to the 26th zone.

From Monday to Sunday, right in front of the Chatuchak market, there is a new trading location called "Red Building" or Tuek Dang (Bangsa Crossing). This outdoor flea market is perfect for finding second-hand items including antiques and vintage. Here you can find interior items, furniture, old books, vintage clothes, accessories or even collectible toys.

Not far from the city center is the Pattavicorn market, where one person's unnecessary things are another's treasure. Here you can get real pleasure from exploring a lot of random things, among which you can find something to your liking. It could be clothes, cassettes, used auto parts, kitchenware, Buddhist amulets, film cameras, or old comics.

  1. Metro Forest Walk

On the outskirts of Bangkok, a 20-minute drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport is the PTT Forest Station. A natural green oasis in Bangkok has been restored and is being used as a learning center. Although the “forest station” was opened in 2015 by Thailand’s state oil and gas giant PTT as part of a reforestation program, it has been hidden from most foreign travelers until now. Visitors can walk along a “floating” wooden path that overlooks a beautiful forest. Metro Forest is the place to find the widest variety of trees native to Bangkok.

  1. Bangkok Green Parks

As part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the capital of the kingdom, the city has just opened the first canal park in Thailand, Chong Nonsi. Its design will be fully completed in August 2022: the total length of the canal will be 9 km in both directions. It was created to remind people of the city's past: Bangkok was once known as the "Venice of the East" because the city had many small canals. The Canal Park is reminiscent of Bangkok as it once was, but with modern touches. The zigzag flyover connecting the Chong Nonsi Skywalk to the linear park is a beautiful sight, especially when viewed at night. It is easily accessible by skytrain to Chong Nonsi station.

Another new green park in the city is The Chao Phraya Sky Park, the first park with a garden bridge linking Bangkok with its sister city Thonburi. The bridge is a beautiful footpath about 280 meters long. Visitors to the park can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the river and surrounding area, a charming place to take a stroll during the day or evening.

  1. New cafes and restaurants

Whether you're a digital nomad or not, Bangkok offers to start your morning with a cup of coffee at one of the various cafes located throughout the city. For example, you can visit Piccolo Vicolo Cafe with a 50-year history, decorated with wooden vintage decor and surrounded by greenery - it is tucked away in a small alley in the Rachatkhevi district near the MBK shopping center. Piccolo Vicolo Cafe's menu contains several unusual signature drinks.

Thailand's first bistro that focuses on different types of cocoa - 31 Degrees, located in the Sathorn district. Here you can try cocoa from local beans grown in northern Thailand and throughout the country, allowing the traveler to experience the palette of flavors of the drink from various regions. This place is not just for those with a sweet tooth, the bistro also serves organically grown food

  1. Hotel accommodation in the new Thaksin area with a luxurious atmosphere

Looking for stylish waterfront hotels in a new area is no further than south of Takin Bridge. The Four Seasons at Chao Phraya River is located in the area and boasts a luxurious cafe, BKK Social Club bar and two excellent restaurants: Italian Riva del Fiumi and Chinese Yu Ting Yuan, awarded with one Michelin star.

Hotel Capella is another brand new 5-star hotel with an authentic atmosphere. The hotel's backyard greenhouse grows organic herbs and vegetables to be used by chefs to prepare a variety of drinks and dishes at the hotel's restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Côte.

  1. Getting to know Ari

Just a few BTS stops from the city center, you can find Ari, a creative, laid-back neighborhood. There are many cozy restaurants, bars, organic food shops, tea houses and cafes that attract not only local residents, but also tourists from other countries. Street food stalls and authentic Thai restaurants are also open throughout the day. Here, travelers can find affordable small hotels or accommodation through Airbnb.

  1. Visit Walking Street

Jodd Fairs night street market is one of the city's new attractions. It is located right behind the Rama 9 mall, just a 5-minute walk from the Rama 9 metro station. What you can expect from it is a variety of inexpensive clothes, gadgets, bars and a lot of street food. The market also has a new skating rink, which operates daily, where every fan of figure skating can demonstrate their skills.

Another place to walk in the evening is the Klong Ong Ang Walking Street. The city's newest pedestrian street is close to Khao San Road and the Chao Phraya River. Located just a three-minute walk from Sam Yot MRT Station, Klong Ong Ang Street is one of the best places to sample a variety of delicious dishes, from kebabs to grilled seafood and Thai sweets. In addition, there are many stalls selling goods from T-shirts, dresses and shoes to children's toys, plants, accessories and home decoration. Walking Street is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 16:00 to 22:00.

  1. Soi Nana bars

Conde Nast Traveler named Soi Nan as one of the world's five trendiest areas this year. The tiny historic lane between Maitricit Street and Rama IV Street is considered one of Bangkok's busiest nightlife locations, with many of the coolest bars in the city. It is worth paying attention to the one and only Tep Bar: its concept is to be a Thai bar with authentic national cuisine, unusual local drinks and cocktails. This is the place where you can hear interesting music and playing national instruments. Featured on the Netflix series Midnight Asia, Teens of Thailand is one of the most popular gin houses in the area. This small bar has only 15 seats and fills up very quickly. Don't forget to try their unique signature cocktail, which varies with the season.

  1. Introduction to the art of tattooing

The history and culture of Thailand is closely connected with the art of tattoos. Many people come to the kingdom, both intentionally and spontaneously, to experience the art of body art and tattoo designs that the country has to offer. In recent years, Bangkok has seen some great artists representing a wide variety of styles as well as professional studios. Tattoo prices in Thailand are often much lower than elsewhere - whether you're looking for a more traditional Thai sak yant, new or old school, realistic, minimal or do-it-yourself tattoo.
