Changing the oil in a Can-Am ATV is a quick maintenance job that can be done with a handful of basic tools in a matter of minutes.

Watch the video above and follow the steps below to change the oil in a Can-Am Outlander 1000 ATV.

Tools and Supplies – Can-Am Outlander 1000 Oil Change

  • Ratchet and extensions
  • 17mm socket
  • 8mm wrench
  • Torque wrench

NOTE: We changed the oil in a Can-Am Outlander 1000 XMR, but the steps are the same or similar for most ATVs.

How to Change Can-Am Outlander 1000 XMR Oil

Step 1. Run the engine for a minute to warm the oil, which makes it less viscous and drain faster.

Step 2. Remove the dipstick/oil filler cap from the right side of the engine. This vents the crankcase, which also helps the oil drain faster.

Step 3. Position a drain pan under the motor, then remove the 17mm drain bolt and O-ring from the underside of the engine.

Step 4. Inspect the O-ring for wear or damage and replace it if necessary.

NOTE: Replace the O-ring every 3-4 oil changes regardless of its condition because each time it’s tightened, it loses some of its ability to seal properly.

Step 5. Reinstall the the 17mm drain bolt and O-ring, and torque the bolt to 22 foot-pounds.

Step 6. Remove the front inner fender well and the footguard to access the oil filter cap.

Step 7. Remove the three 8mm oil filter cap bolts, the oil filter cap and the O-ring. Inspect the oil filter cap’s O-ring and replace it if it’s worn or damaged.

Step 8. Remove the old oil filter, then install the new oil filter with the rubber grommet facing into the engine.

Step 9. Reinstall the oil filter cap and O-ring, then tighten down the three 8mm cap bolts.

Step 10. Reinstall the front inner fender well and the footguard.

Step 11. Fill the engine with 3.1 quarts of 5W40 synthetic engine oil and reinstall the dipstick/oil filler cap.

Step 12. Run the motor for a minute to distribute the oil within the engine.

Step 13. Shut off the engine and let it sit for 2 minutes so the oil can settle.

Step 14. Remove the dipstick/oil filler cap and then clean it, reinstall it and remove it once more to read the oil level.

Step 15. Top off the oil if necessary, then reinstall the dipstick/oil filler cap and you’re done.

After a long wait for rides, the last thing you want is to face a breakdown in the middle of the forest, and then spend part of the season for repairs. Therefore, it is very important to properly service the ATV after the winter - change the oil, lubricate everything you need, make sure there are no backlashes and smudges, check the tightness of the bolts and nuts. We will talk about everything in more detail in the article. nine0003

Change the engine oil

This is important, because over time the oil loses its properties - because of this, heat is less efficiently removed and friction between parts increases. All this leads to accelerated wear.

Please note that the ATV engine can only be filled with special oil for motorcycles - this is due to the clutch in an oil bath. And it is advisable to use what the manufacturer recommends, as it guarantees stable operation under increased loads. For example, for CFMOTO there is a special line of CFMOTO G-Motion oils. nine0003

Inspect the spark plugs

Two things are checked:

  • the color of the spark plug insulator is normally light brown or brown, another color indicates the engine is not working properly;
  • the gap between the electrodes - must be the same as indicated in the manual.

Clean the air filter

The air filter prevents dust and small particles of dirt from entering the engine, so it is important to keep it in good condition. nine0003

To clean the foam filter, wash it in warm water with Fairy or in a special agent, wring it out a little (do not twist it) and dry it. After that, impregnation with oil for filters is necessary.

Clean radiator

When driving, the radiator becomes clogged with seeds, grass, lint and dirt. If you do not clean it, the next ride can turn into a test - a long road to the house with constant stops to cool the engine.

It is better to clean the radiator with a compressor by removing the protective grille. It is undesirable to use a pressure washer due to the risk of damaging the honeycombs. nine0003

It is best to move the radiator to the front luggage area - it is more convenient to service, you can safely overcome puddles and other water obstacles without fear of subsequent overheating of the engine due to stuck dirt.

Important: if you plan to dive deep into the water, it is obligatory to install snorkels, seal the wiring and remove the breathers - without this, it is highly likely that the swim will end tragically for the equipment.

Drain old gasoline

During long storage, gasoline deteriorates - fractions evaporate, the octane number becomes lower, oxidation and precipitation occur. If you drive on such fuel, the piston group and the fuel system may suffer, so it is better to fill in fresh. nine0003

Inspect suspension and steering components

There should be no play - try to shake all the rods and levers by hand. You also need to make sure that there are no oil smudges on the shock absorbers.

Inspect transmission elements

It is necessary to check the cardan shafts for play, make sure that there are no breaks or damage on the anthers of the CV joints.

It is also important to inspect the variator belt: if there are cracks or broken teeth, a new one must be installed. The variator itself can be blown out with compressed air. Lubrication of its individual parts is required only if it is indicated in the instruction manual (it all depends on the ATV model). nine0003

Fill in fresh grease

Timely renewal of grease will help extend the life of the components. Depending on the model of the ATV, the number and location of injection points may be different. Usually they are on the suspension arms, crosses and spline joints of cardans, steering knuckles.

Check the wheel bearings

To do this, take the wheel on the sides and shake it in different directions, jacking up the ATV. If there is play, the wheel bearings are most likely worn out, less often the bushings. nine0003

Check brakes

Check:

  • residual thickness of brake discs;
  • residual pad thickness;
  • hose integrity;
  • brake fluid level;
  • brake lever travel.

Make sure the tires are properly inflated

The recommended tire pressure for your ATV can be found in the owner's manual and also on the vehicle itself, usually near the left rear fender. nine0003

It is not necessary to be guided by the value indicated on the tires themselves - this is the maximum pressure that the tire can withstand.

Protect Electrical Equipment

Apply a protective spray or electrical lubricant to pins and connectors to prevent moisture ingress and malfunction of the ATV.

Even before the season, you must make sure that the high and low beams, side lights, emergency alarm, power steering, turn signals, horn, winch and heating are functioning normally. nine0003

Check the battery charge

Normally, the battery charge is from 12.5 V. If it is less, it should be charged. Plaque on the terminals, cable lugs and the battery case itself can be removed with a sponge moistened with a solution of baking soda in water.

What else to do before the season?

  • check antifreeze level;
  • check that the nuts and bolts of the undercarriage are tightened; nine0008
  • clean the spark arrester - this is a fine mesh pipe inside the muffler to prevent dirt from entering and protect against forest fire;
  • Treat rubber parts with silicone spray - this will extend their service life.
  • Important points if the quad is new

    A new quad needs a break-in to get the piston rings to fit against the cylinder. This will ensure normal heat transfer and prevent serious damage - for example, burning or jamming of the piston. nine0003

    Run-in is carried out in the first 500 km of run. Rules:

    • let the engine idle for a couple of minutes before driving;
    • drive at different speeds;
    • do not press the throttle lever more than halfway;
    • do not carry or tow heavy loads;
    • , replace the oil filter and oil immediately after break-in.

    Short list - how to prepare the ATV for the season

    • change the oil in the engine, gearbox and gearboxes; nine0008
    • clean the air filter or replace it with a new one;
    • clean the radiator;
    • if heavy off-roading and deep diving is planned, install a radiator offset, snorkels, take out the breathers and seal the wiring;
    • check antifreeze level;
    • check that the spark plugs are in good condition;
    • replace the old gasoline with fresh;
    • inspect the suspension, steering and transmission elements;
    • nine0005 pump fresh grease through grease fittings;
    • check the condition of the wheel bearings;
    • make sure that the brake pads and discs are thick enough, that the brake hoses are not damaged, check the brake fluid level;
    • Inflate tires if necessary;
    • make sure that the electrician is working properly, protect the wiring from moisture with a special compound for electrical equipment;
    • Check nuts and bolts for tightness;
    • clean the spark arrester; nine0008
    • spray rubber parts with silicone spray.

    A new ATV must be broken in correctly.

    When using equipment of active types, do not forget about its maintenance, monitor the general condition of the ATV and change or top up technical fluids in time. The service life of the equipment depends on this.

    nine0002 Using only original components and engine oils for ATV , recommended by the manufacturer of equipment, you can fully enjoy the “high” from owning such a machine, because it will not let you down, no matter what difficult situation you find yourself in.

    Can I use automotive oil for ATV

    Do not use regular automotive ATV engine oil. Consider the main reasons.

    Cause #1 ATV Operating Conditions

    Characterized by dusty atmosphere, frequent idling and regular off-road driving.

    Reason #2 Design feature of

    engines

    Small crankcase volume, increased oil circulation and high thermal load on the engine due to its high thermal stress. Therefore, in real ATV operating conditions, only a special oil developed in accordance with the requirements of the motorcycle manufacturer, as well as taking into account the real operating conditions of ATVs, can reliably protect the engine. nine0003

    So, CFMOTO G-Motion 4T 5W-40 and 10W-40 oils were developed by Gazpromneft-Lubricants specifically for CFMOTO ATVs. The CFMOTO G-Motion 4T 5W-40 and 10W-40 range are semi-synthetic ATV engine oils manufactured from synthetic and highly refined mineral base oils.

    CFMOTO G-Motion engine oil for all-terrain vehicles.

    Benefits of oils

    The main advantage of CFMOTO G-Motion 4T 5W-40 for the consumer is the ability to use the product in a wide range of operating temperatures: for example, the oil provides a cold start of the engine down to -30 0 C.

    In turn, CFMOTO G-Motion 4T 10W-40 provides increased engine protection at very high loads by maintaining a stable oil film.

    There are other features of these particular oils, showing that they have high performance characteristics, which have been repeatedly confirmed by oil tests in real conditions (see Presentation of test results).

    ATV Lubricants

    Choosing ATV Engine Oil , by the way, do not forget about other ATV parts that need lubrication.

    ATV Gear Oil

    For example, gearboxes and transfer cases require gear oil, which is also worn out and needs to be changed regularly. It is necessary to check the oil every MOT (TOs are carried out according to the regulations described in the Service Book, which can be downloaded on the page of each ATV (see download files, for example, CFMOTO X8 Basic Restyle). As a rule, change the oil in the 1st MOT (the first 500 km ), and after - through maintenance, that is, 3000 km, 6000 km, etc.

    CFMOTO recommends Gazpromneft GL-4 80W-90 gear oil.

    ATV Gear Oil

    ATV Suspension Lubricant

    It is also necessary to regularly update the grease (suspension elements, cardan joints, etc.), which, over time, picks up dirt and is washed out with water. Therefore, we recommend using a waterproof multi-purpose grease based on the lithium-complex thickener Gazpromneft Grease LX EP 2.

    multi-purpose lubricant Gazpromneft Grease LX EP 2.

    ATV Brake Fluid

    Brake fluid gradually takes water out of the air over time and begins to boil at lower and lower temperatures, which is not the best effect on your safety.

    For CFMOTO ATVs of our own line, we recommend using the time-tested brake fluid G-Energy Expert DOT 4 , boiling point. As a rule, liquids of different classes are reversely replaceable (except for silicone brake fluids - they cannot be mixed with others), that is, you can use DOT-4 instead of DOT-3, but in no case vice versa. CFMOTO recommends using more state-of-the-art DOT-4 brake fluid to improve safety and extend the life of the brake system). nine0003

    ATV antifreeze

    As you can see, antifreezes differ in color, but it is important to remember that the color of the antifreeze does not affect the technical characteristics. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that the “acidic” color of antifreeze only indicates that the composition contains a fluorescent additive that plays an important role in the diagnosis of the cooling system - coolant leaks are established (glow) when the engine compartment is illuminated with ultraviolet light. nine0003

    Expert tip:
    Therefore, the choice of antifreeze should not be guided by the rule "color to color". Coolants of the same color can have completely different compositions, which can lead to damage to the ATV.

    CFMOTO recommends the use of G-Energy Antifreeze NF 40 for engine cooling, based on ethylene glycol and hybrid technology additives.
