MOSCOW, April 10 — RIA Novosti, Sergey Belousov. Tire workers open their gates wide for the seasonal influx of customers. However, the weather in the middle and northern latitudes of Russia, as always, makes car owners think: should they switch to summer tires right now or wait for warmer days and nights? What is the risk of using winter tires in warm weather? And what happens if you "change shoes" as soon as possible?
The State Duma decides how the climate in different regions should be taken into account in the draft tire fines
November 7, 2016, 18:34
Significant temperature fluctuations in the middle of the Russian spring are a common thing. During the day, the sun bakes, it becomes hot, in the early morning and late evening the thermometer rises only one or two degrees above zero, and at night the puddles outside the cities are still covered with a thin crust of ice. According to our legislation, in the spring in Russia, you can drive on any tires without fear of fines. The criteria for using winter and summer tires are described only in the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union "On the safety of wheeled vehicles". Thus, paragraph 5.5 of Appendix No. 8 prohibits the operation of vehicles equipped with tires with anti-skid studs only during three summer months. On friction (read - non-studded) motorists are free to ride at least all year round. Experts unanimously assure that danger on the roads awaits both those who have already "changed their shoes" and those who still prefer winter tires.
According to RIA Novosti in the Russian representative office of Hankook Tires, driving on studded tires at positive temperatures increases the reaction time and response of the car to steering actions, the braking distance is significantly lengthened, the car breaks into a slip in turns earlier. In addition, riding on such rubber is fraught with the loss of studs and a decrease in tire life.
In hot weather, winter tires lose their elasticity, which will negatively affect traction in the next winter season, and can also lead to structural damage.
Friction tires will behave even worse due to the softer rubber compound, the only thing that does not threaten them is the loss of studs. By the way, the technical regulations of the Customs Union stipulate a minimum residual tread depth of winter tires equal to four millimeters, but there is also a caveat: during operation on an icy or snowy road surface. For a dry road, even for a winter tire, the minimum tread depth is equal to the summer one for passenger cars - 1.6 mm.
When to change tires and how not to get fined for out of season tires
19 October 2016, 18:15
In warm weather, the winter tire overheats and the braking distance increases, says Pirelli. According to road tests conducted by the German ADAC club, the braking distance of a car with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) on a dry road surface from a speed of 100 km / h at a temperature of +25 degrees Celsius in the case of winter tires turned out to be 16 meters, or 44%, longer than with summer ones.
Even if the car hasn't been driven anywhere, the heat can kill winter tires. In three weeks, high temperatures will most likely break the geometry of the tires. There is no way you can fix this, the rubber will have to be thrown away, Hankook notes.
However, you should not run headlong into a tire shop. A noticeable loss of properties of winter tires will occur only at real summer temperatures - above +20 degrees Celsius.
"The tread compound of a winter tire is usually natural rubber, which feels great in cold temperatures but becomes softer with every additional degree," explains Oleksandr Parkhomchuk, Head of Technical Customer Support at Nokian Tires .
If, for one reason or another, summer tires are already on the car, it should be operated with the utmost care. According to Parkhomchuk, instead of natural rubber, synthetic rubber is added to the composition of summer tires, and he does not like negative temperatures.
“In a severe minus on snow and ice, the car turns into a curling shell, if it can move at all,” says a Hankook representative. , but also more brittle, which can lead to the formation of mechanical cracks on the components of the tire and the impossibility of its further operation. In addition, such rubber will make more noise from rolling and shaking on small bumps. The only positive feature of a "hardened" summer tire is improved fuel economy due to reduced rolling resistance.
Sooner or later all tires wear out or get damaged and need to be replaced.
How quickly this happens depends on various factors, including how you drive, the natural environment where you live, and how well your tires are cared for.
Tires should be checked regularly (at least once a month). The following are signs that indicate the need for tire replacement.
This is the best replacement. Excellent handling requires all four tires to be of the same type and size, unless otherwise recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
When purchasing only two new replacement tires, make sure they are compatible with other tires in use, comply with current legislation and the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer.
Buying only two new tires, put them on the rear wheels for better grip and stability while driving.
If tires are to be used simultaneously, fit radial tires on the rear wheels.
Radial and non-radial tires on the same axle at the same time.
It is not recommended to use tires with different speed ratings on the same vehicle.
