General officers are the highest ranking officers in the U.S. Armed Forces. Although their job titles vary according to the branch of service, they are at the highest level of military management during times of peace and war.

Job Description

The job description for a general officer depends on the career field, rank and assignment. Generals are responsible for high-level decision making and personnel in their command. General officers serve in combat and non-combat administrative positions, as well as in professions such as law, medicine and the ministry.

In the Army, Air Force and Marines, the term "general" is used for officers at pay grades O-7 to O-10. The full corresponding titles are Brigadier General (BG), Lieutenant General (LTG), Major General (MG) and General (GEN). Equivalent ranks in all four services wear the same insignia. A one-star general, a brigadier general, wears a single silver star. A lieutenant general wears two stars, a major general wears three, and a general wears four. During wartime only, an additional star can be added by the Army, Navy and Air Force.

A Navy one star rank is the same as the one star rank in the other services. Corresponding titles for general officers in the Navy are as follows:

  • O-7 Brigadier General = Rear Admiral Lower Half (RDML)
  • O-8 Lieutenant General = Rear Admiral Upper Half (RADM)
  • O-9 Major General = Vice Admiral (VADM)
  • O-10 General = Admiral (ADM)

Education Requirements

There are three ways to become an officer in the Armed Forces. The majority of officers are commissioned after graduating from a college or university, often having earned a degree through a Reserve Officers Training Corp (ROTC) program. Officers can also be commissioned after completing a professional degree such as medicine, dentistry or law.

A select number of officers are graduates of one of the service academies, either the U. S. Military Academy (Army) at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis (Navy and Marines) or the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Admissions to the academies is highly competitive and requires an appointment from a U.S. official, usually a senator or a member of Congress.

Enlisted service members, who have exemplary records, can apply for Officer Candidate School (OCS), which trains soldiers, who may not have a college degree, to serve as officers.

Most officers begin their Army careers as a second lieutenant (pay grade O-1), although newly graduated physicians, dentists and veterinarians start at the rank of captain (O-3). Depending on the needs of the military, an experienced professional may even enter at a higher rank, though it is rare. To become a general, you must be promoted through all the ranks to O-7, which usually requires distinction in the chosen field and at least 20 years of military service. It is very rare for an officer trained through OCS to reach the rank of general.

Work Environment

General officers work in a variety of environments, depending on their career field. A general officer may head a hospital or a group of satellite clinics. He may be superintendent of an educational institution, such as one of the service academies or an advanced officer training program. General officers serve as strategic and tactical leaders in peace time and when the nation is at war.

Salary and Job Outlook

A brigadier general salary starts at $8,640.60 a month. The top salary for a general is $15,800.10 a month, for an O-10 with more than 40 years of military service. That's a salary range of $103,687.20 to 189,601.20 annually, depending on rank and years of service. General officers receive a housing allowance, adjusted for local cost of living, as well as medical, dental and vision benefits. The highest rank in the U.S. Army is a four-star general. As of June 2020, there were 14 Army four-stars, the most at any time since World War II, according to Military.com. The 2020 four-star general pay is $16,441.80 per month, which does not include amounts for a housing allowance and other benefits. The base yearly four-star general pay is $197,302.

A General's Job Description

There are four classifications of generals: brigadier general (one star), major general (two stars), lieutenant general (three stars) and general (four stars). The ranks correspond to pay grades O-7, O-8, O-9 and O-10. Pay grades are used to designate equivalent ranks across the Armed Forces since not all branches of the military use the same names. For example, an O-10 is a general in the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force, but an admiral in the Navy and the Coast Guard.

An O-10 is currently the highest rank in the U.S. Army. As an O-10, four-star general pay is the same as an O-10 in any branch of the military. Likewise, salaries for generals O-7 through O-9 are also the same throughout the Armed Forces. The Department of Defense website shows insignia and rank equivalents for all service members.

Education and Training Requirements

Military officers typically have a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Enlisted service members can become officers by successfully completing officer candidate school. Admission is by application with the recommendation of the individual's commanding officer.

To become a four-star general, an officer must be promoted through the ranks. Usually, an officer receives a commission of second lieutenant (2LT, or O-1) when entering the service, although in certain occupations, including physician, veterinarian, dentist and attorney, officers are commissioned at a higher rank. Typically, these professionals are commissioned at the rank of captain (CPT, or O-3), although it varies according to the branch of service and the experience of the individual.

Although many officers and enlisted personnel choose to retire after 20 years of service, when they are first eligible to collect a military pension, a four-star general is not typically awarded the rank before 30 years of service.

Work Environment

Army generals are in senior leadership positions. They typically work indoors in an office setting but work outdoors during training exercises and, if necessary, in combat situations. They work with large staffs and have overall responsibility for thousands of service members who report to authorities at various levels.

Every Army officer has an Area of Concentration (AOC), similar to the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) designation used in the enlisted ranks. Generals assume leadership positions in many AOCs, although not every one will be promoted to O-10. For example, the highest ranking officer in the U.S. Dental Corps is a two-star, or major general. The U.S. Surgeon General is a three-star, or lieutenant general. General Mark Milley, the current four-star holding the position of Joint Chiefs of Staff, held leadership positions in infantry and air assault.

Salary and Career Outlook

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) makes military pay charts available online to the public. Pay tables are typically updated as of January 1 of each year. The monthly pay for a four-star general, also known as a General of the Army, (O-10) was $16,441,80, effective January 2020. Service members typically receive a pay increase every year as determined by Congress. Officers and enlisted personnel also receive increases according to their years of service. The exception is for lieutenant generals (O-9s) and Generals of the Army (O-10s), whose salaries are capped.

There is no current information on a five-star general salary because the rank is reserved for wartime and has not been used since World War II. The history website of the U.S. Army states that, at that time, a temporary grade was approved by Congress on December 14, 1944. Five men held the rank: George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Henry H. Arnold and Omar N. Bradley. If the rank is ever re-instated, the five-star general salary would be established by Congress.

E-1 is the lowest military rank in the US Army : Airman Basic (Air Force), Private (Army/Marines), Recruit Sailor (Navy). Enlisted personnel usually complete this rank through basic training and are automatically promoted to the next rank after six months of service.

Military personnel who achieve this rank with 15 years of service will receive $5,580 per month.

O-2 earns $4,184 per month, which is $50,208 per year.

O-3: $68,052

Officers will receive a pay raise upon reaching three years of service.

Using the Army's average promotion schedule, officers are automatically promoted to the next rank after four years of service.

New Captains and Lieutenants (Navy) with four years of service earn $ 5671 per month. At this rank, officers will receive a salary increase every two years.

O-4: $86,832

Officers typically spend at least 17 years in the military before moving to O-5.

Both three- and four-star admirals and generals who remain in service long enough will receive the maximum compensation permitted by the code. These ranks are vice admiral of the fleet and lieutenant general of other branches of service.

Excluding additional benefits, cost-of-living adjustments and allowances, these employees are paid up to $15,800. This is approximately 189$600 per year.

Regardless of length of service, once a military officer reaches the four-star rank of general or admiral, he no longer receives an increase in salary and is limited to $15,800 per month.

The base salary can seem stingy, especially among the lower ranks, where recruits earn about $20,000 a year.

But military personnel receive a number of benefits and may qualify for additional allowances.

TRICARE Prime, Military Primary Care Package, is free for active duty military personnel. It allows them to save $6,896 a year for single payers.

When military personnel are eligible to live off base, they receive basic housing allowance (BAH), which increases with every pay increase; the exact amount is determined depending on the place of residence and whether the person has children. Members of the armed forces also receive allowances to cover the cost of food, and in expensive duty stations receive a living wage allowance (COLA). Enlisted personnel also receive a supplement to help pay for their uniforms.

Any part of an employee's pay marked as "surcharge" is not taxed by the government , so military personnel will only pay taxes on approximately two-thirds of their income.
