An amphibious ATV's stability and reliability on water and land depend on its low center of gravity, wide base and relatively light weight composite hull. All this gives a comfortable ride and excellent performance.
Prior to this, the “colleagues” of this novelty of the American market on the water surface could reach a speed of no more than fifteen kilometers in sixty minutes. The difference between them and the Quadski is the use of a GIBBS jet water cannon. This High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology has already been patented because it is extremely effective when used in water conditions.
The Quadski is closer in size to a car than an ATV. It is understandable - in fact, a large jet ski had to be put on wheels. All models are equipped with rear-wheel drive only. Torque is transmitted to the wheels by chain drives. Due to the cantilever installation of wheels on vertical arms, it was possible to achieve an impressive ground clearance of 230 mm.
Despite the excellent performance on the water, the device is certified as an ATV. And this means that it is enough to register it with the Gostekhnadzor, and the tax will be calculated not according to the draconian hydrocycle scale, but according to the moderate “tractor” one.
The Quadski is equipped with a 1293cc BMW motorcycle engine. In the original, this engine had a power of 173 hp, but it was derated to 140. This is partly due to adaptation to fuel with a lower octane rating - the manufacturer recommends 92nd gasoline.
I sit behind the wheel and press the gas trigger. It is located on land, under the thumb of the right hand, and not under the index finger, as on jet skis. The Quadski starts off strong, but almost immediately the whine of the gearbox makes it clear that it needs to shift into a higher gear.
If most ATVs are now equipped with CVTs, in this case a semi-automatic robotic gearbox is used. Up gears must be switched manually with a button under the left hand, and when the speed decreases, it automatically resets to the lower stages.
The maximum speed of the amphibian in both environments is 75 km/h. At the same time, to develop it on land, a modest 45 hp is enough, and all 140 are required on the water. With a full 55-liter tank, 600 km of hard roads and 150 km of water routes can be overcome.
On land, engine power is limited to 45 hp, but this is sufficient. In any case, the device reaches the declared maximum speed of 75 km / h easily, and then it is scary to accelerate and, by and large, unsafe. Quadski enters a fast turn with confidence, and to stay in the saddle, you need to hang.
The mono drive is a clear indication that Quadski owners should ignore mud baths. It is echoed by an open chain drive, the gaps between the tire and the levers are only a few millimeters. The wheels are mounted on cantilevered forged aluminum arms that will not withstand excessive Jeeper loads. And the plastic bottom is not protected at all. Yes, you can slip through the mud, but what if there is a stone or a log in a puddle?
The suspension of the Quadski is completely independent. The levers are made of forged aluminum (however, as well as the supporting frame), thanks to which the amphibian turned out to be very light (583 kg.). In the civilian version of the Quadski, torque can be transferred to all four wheels (by pressing a button, you can connect or, on the contrary, disconnect the front axle), while both axles have differentials, so this amazing amphibian can even be driven on asphalt. The Quadski version for rescuers and the military is somewhat different, because the rear axle is without a differential.
But for extreme off-road driving on the military version of the Quadski, you can lock the center differential and the front axle differential. Yes, it’s hard to steer, but you can even get to the ends of the world. A 4-cylinder power unit with a working volume of 1.6 liters produces 140 “horses” already at 3500 rpm.
At the same time, the engine is quite economical on land: a 50-liter tank is enough for 600 kilometers of cross-country driving. Fuel consumption on water is not so sparing - a full tank is enough for a couple of hours. When the water jet is turned on, the “brains” that control the operation of the injection engine begin to prepare a different fuel mixture. As a result, the motor reaches its maximum power already at 7000 rpm.

Therefore, the designers chose a certain “golden mean”: on the one hand, the force of inertia is not felt so strongly, on the other hand, the device does not slide through the water like a pebble.
The Quadski double-lever foldable can rightfully be considered a masterpiece of technical art. Like any work of art, it requires careful handling: it does not seem that openwork aluminum structures with minimal gaps can withstand more or less serious off-road.
Using the lever under the left hand, I switch to reverse. A cap is lowered onto the nozzle of the water jet, changing the direction of the jet. On a jet ski, reverse gear is mainly useful when mooring. Without it, expensive plastic is easy to kill. When approaching the shore, I press the button again. The wheels are lowered, a sound signal indicates readiness - you can go to solid ground.
The Quadski is unique in that it rides and swims really well. This technique is perfect for rescuers and border guards. There are already developments with all-wheel drive and even a differential lock, but so far these are only experimental options. An all-terrain vehicle cannot be made with one all-wheel drive - you need to change the cantilever levers, protect the bottom and chassis.
Not happy with the carrying capacity on the water - only 120 kg. It turns out that you can’t even drive with a passenger. However, just in July, the first copies of the two-seater Quadski XL were presented. It is 32 cm longer, almost a centner heavier, but the carrying capacity on the water is 200 kg. I would especially like to note the correct design of the amphibian. Due to the low center of gravity and the correct weight distribution, it is very stable on the water. In other words, there was no difference between riding a modern jetski and Quadski. And as for the responsiveness of the device to the "gas to the floor", here the dynamics are absolutely on a par with the "hydraulic". If we talk about fuel consumption, then the tank of the car can hold 57 liters of AI-92, which is enough for about 1.5-2 hours of water rides. That is, the power reserve at an average speed of 55-60 km / h is 110-120 km. Well, did you ride on the water? Then we swim to the shore!
Lumps of dirt adhering to the suction port of the pump can instantly ruin the jet. In order to avoid accidents, Quadski has a water tank. Fluid from the pressurized reservoir cleans the channels vital to the pump from dirt.
While the owners of jet skis are suffering, trying to push their device onto a special trailer, you just press a button, thereby bringing the wheels into combat position and turning off the jet, and after 5 seconds you drive ashore on your own. However, in fairness, we note that not every bank is tough for this "amphibian". The civilian version of the amphibian has a drive only on the rear wheels, so if the coastline is not too hard or swampy, then a heavy car - and the device weighs 535 kilos - can easily sit on its belly. But at the same time, it cannot be said that he is completely unadapted to land walks. Let's start with the fact that the body of the unique amphibian is made of high-strength composite plastic, which is resistant to impacts on stones and hemp. As tests have shown, in order to tear through the bottom or side of the Kvadsky, the “helmsman” needs to try very hard, because the plastic is not only durable, but also elastic. It is somewhat reminiscent of a good car bumper, which can be dented, but certainly not burst.
The ground clearance of an amphibian is less than on conventional four-wheel drive ATVs - 230 mm. That is, in principle, riding over rough terrain in the mode of an easy trophy walk is quite realistic, but it’s absolutely not worth it to “drill” where the paw of a wild beast is afraid to go. Firstly, because there is no all-wheel drive, and secondly, the leading rear axle is equipped with a differential without the possibility of forced locking.
Motor from BMW with a volume, as already mentioned, of 1300 "cubes", develops a power of 140 "mares". On land, the maximum speed is limited to the same mark as on water - 75 km / h. Of course, with such an engine, the jet ski should go faster, but the manufacturer limited the maximum speed to electronics for safety reasons. On land, the fuel consumption of an ATV hybrid with a jet ski is an order of magnitude lower. Judge for yourself: 57 liters that fit in a gas tank allow you to drive not 110-120 kilometers, as on water, but all 600! It is understandable, because the engine does not have to spend energy on the fight against water resistance and the operation of the water cannon.
The gearbox is a separate issue. Here is a 5-speed electromechanical transmission (by the way, like the engine - also from the motorcycle division of BMW). That is, without depressing the clutch, with the help of buttons, the “helmsman” decides for himself which gear at one time or another is best to use. The “semi-automatic” on the Quadski, like on many modern motorcycles, works so smoothly that you don’t even notice how the gears are shifting.
Suspension on our hero is spring-hydraulic, fully independent, the arms are made of forged aluminum (as are some of the supporting frame elements). Works for "five plus": perfectly swallows any bumps, does not sway, due to which the device is very obedient and predictable in control. Hodovka, as you understand, is not too simple (after all, it develops when we turn an ATV into a jet ski), but despite the complexity of the construct, it is durable, which was repeatedly proven during a test drive.
