Your vehicle’s maintenance is paramount and should not be overlooked. Changing your oil regularly will extend the life of your vehicle and allow it to perform at its peak level.

We created this step by step guide of how to change your vehicle’s oil, pay close attention and please share this content with others in need!

Items Required

10W40 Non-synthetic ATV oil (Click here for oil)

Oil drip pan (Click here for oil drip pan)

Ratchet with 15 or 17mm Socket

Oil funnel

Instructions

If you own a 110cc or 125cc Coolster / Tao-Tao / BMS / Apollo etc… ATV or Dirt Bike this tutorial will apply to you. Always refer to your vehicles owners manual when performing any maintenance.

STEP 1: We strongly suggest placing your ATV or Dirt Bike on a lift or jack-stand to allow the maximum amount of oil to drain from the vehicle and also to provide you ample space to work. Always lock the vehicles front brakes to avoid having vehicle rolling around while you perform maintenance.

STEP 2: Locate your vehicle’s oil drain plug located directly under the right side of your engine.

Note: There are two bolts under the engine that look similar. Only touch the larger one on the right side facing vertically. Do not unscrew the smaller bolt.

STEP 3: Place your oil drip pan directly underneath the oil drain plug. Using your 15 or 17mm wrench, remove the oil drain plug screw to allow the oil to drain into the oil pan. Allow the vehicle 20-30 minutes to fully drain of all oil. If the oil smells burnt or has metal shavings/particulates present this may be indicative of internal engine issues, and should be brought in for service immediately.

Note: Do not lose the silver washer that is attached to the drain plug or else the vehicle will leak oil. Make sure you reinstall the washer along with the oil drain plug bolt.

STEP 4: Once all oil has been drained, re-install the oil drain plug along with the drain plug washer.

STEP 5: Locate the oil dipstick (sometimes silver or yellow cap) on the right side of the engine. Unscrew the dipstick using pliers or fingers.

STEP 6: Insert oil funnel into the dipstick cavity and add the appropriate measure of 10W40 Non-synthetic ATV oil.

Note: For 110cc models add approximately 1/2 quart (500ml) oil and top off using dipstick as a guide when vehicle is flat. For 125cc models add approximately 3/4 quart (700ml) oil and top off using dipstick as guide when vehicle is flat.

STEP 7: To check oil level, screw dipstick fully in and then pull back out to verify oil level is at its required mark. Add oil as necessary to meet the top line circle of dipstick.

Complete!

Your oil change is now complete, congratulations! Periodically check you oil dipstick to see if you oil is getting dirty. If you oil look dirty, it’s most likely time for an oil change!

Approximately 8 hours of riding will require an oil change.
We hope this helped, please check out our other informative guides on how to properly maintain your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions - Kids ATVs | Kids Go Karts | SSR Pit Bikes

Vehicles sold on this site are legal in most states. Please check with your local DMV for state specific requirements such as registration, age requirements and helmet laws prior to any purchase. California residents require C.A.R.B. approval (California Air Resolution Board) to be legal in the state of California.

How much assembly is required?

Most vehicles are 75% - 90% assembled. We recommend a certified technician assist you with your assembly.  However, assemblies are generally quick and easy and can be performed by the average consumer with average mechanical aptitude.  Units are run and tested at the factory before being disassembled (made compact) and crated to make shipping feasible. Most units will require you to raise and bolt down the Handle bars, Fill and install Battery, Install Wheels/tires assemblies, Lower A-arm in place and bolt together front hub assemblies, Check and if necessary adjust drive chain tension, check and adjust wheel alignment, install racks if applicable and lastly check entire unit for bolts that may have come loose during shipping or were overlooked during assembly. Every nut and bolt must be checked and verified for tightness before use. Units do come filled with oil (10w40) but require checking for proper level before starting. We do however highly recomend changing  the oil before starting. Note: All tools necessary for assembly are included with unit including a battery charger were applicable. (Not all units come with charger)

Where can I obtain replacement parts if needed?

We stock parts for every make and model we sell. Most parts can be purchased directly from our website using either the Parts drop down menu or the search function. If you can't find the parts you are looking for, or are having trouble identifying your make and model call 732-991-2194 (we would be glad to help).

Do the headlights work?

Yes, all ATV’s, Scooters, and most Go-karts have working headlights, Brake lights, and parking lights. Most models even have a selector switch for high and low beams.

Note: Due to Government regulations most ATV body mounted headlights have been deleted or blacked out to deter nighttime riding. However working replacement headlight assemblies can be purchased separately and installed by the end user. (Handlebar mounted spot light are still supplied) Call for details

How fast do they go?

Depending on rider weight:

110cc: up to 32 mph (can be governed down to 7-10 mph)
125cc: up to 32 mph (can be governed down to 7-10 mph)
150cc: up to 40 mph
250cc: up to 45 mph
300cc: up to 50+ mph

How does the speed governor work?

A stop screw is located on the throttle that when adjusted limits the amount the throttle can be pressed. this is a throttle limiter not a speed limiter.

What type of oil do they use? When should I change it?

Contrary to rumors on the Net they are not filled with fish oil. Most units require and are filled with 15w40 break in oil from the factory. We at Familyfunpowersports highly recommend and use, non-detergent (Rotella T) 15w40 Diesel truck oil. This is the same oil used by many MX and ATV professional race teams in their bikes. If not available any (15w40 four stroke) Motorcycle oil will work. (Note: for very cold climates and easier starting 5w40 Rotella synthetic oil can and should be used) Most units require about 900ML, Verify level with dip stick provided (DO NOT OVERFILL) Check with dip stick. In order to comply with warranty requirements the oil must be changed before initial start up. After the initial oil change it is recommended that the oil be changed again after 5 tanks of fuel and then every 20 hrs thereafter.

Do I have to mix gas and oil for fuel

NO, all our ATVs and Go Karts have 4-stroke motors, which means you will be using ONLY GAS just like your car. 87-93 octane is perfect for these machines.

Do I need to charge the battery every time I use it?

No, all vehicles we sell with the exception of some kick start dirt bikes have standard 12 volt batteries with built in charging system just like every other ATV or Motorcycle. You will need to fully charge the battery (before use) for 18 hours with the supplied charger (were applicable) or you can use a standard 12volt car battery charger if available. Note: Leaving the key on for extended periods of time can and will drain the battery. If storing for a long period of time (over 1 month) remove the positive battery cable.

NOTE: We at familyfunpowersports highly recommend the use of a (battery tender) type Battery Maintainer during cold weather months. It is difficult for smaller powersports vehicle batteries to maintain a charge when the temperature drops below 40degs. They are available for under $60 and are well worth the money and your piece of mind.

ATV » Maintenance Features for 125cc 4-Stroke Gasoline MOTAX Family ATVs

In this article, we'll cover the maintenance features of 125cc 4-stroke gasoline engine ATVs for kids and teens. see the MOTAX family, using the MOTAX T-REX SUPER LUX ATV as an example.

  1. 1. Engine oil change
  2. 2. Air filter service
  3. 3. Spark plug replacement
  4. 4. Suspension maintenance
  5. 5. Drive chain maintenance

Changing the oil in the engine and transmission of the ATV MOTAX T-REX SUPER LUX

To change the engine oil you will need:

1. A container for draining used oil (can be made from an old plastic canister by cutting off the side).

2. Four-stroke ATV engine oil (we recommend using oil of the MOTUL line).

Please note that it is not permissible to use oil intended for automobile engines, since the gearshift mechanism and clutch are in the same oil bath with the engine and for their proper operation a certain set of additives is required, which are not found in automobile oil.

3. 17mm socket wrench or wrench.

The 125cc MOTAX T-REX SUPER LUX power pack has a 0.7L oil fill tank.

The ATV engine must be warmed up to operating temperature before changing the oil. Since the oil sump of the gearbox and engine is combined, it is recommended to ride the ATV forward and in reverse gear. This must be done so that the oil becomes more liquid and fluid, and the wear products that may have been deposited on the inner walls of the crankcase and the mechanism become suspended and mixed with the oil.

Don't be alarmed if the oil you drained from the ATV's power unit is dark in color. During operation, the oil darkens, which indicates that it works and protects the engine from wear.

In order to drain the oil, it is necessary to unscrew the drain plug located at the very bottom of the engine crankcase. Do not confuse this plug with the chain tensioner bolt, which is installed next to it, in the left side cover of the motor.

It must not be unscrewed during this operation.

Unscrew the drain plug (in our case, the drain plug is green, see the photo above), having previously moved a container under the ATV to drain the used oil. Let the oil drain completely.

While the oil is draining, unscrew the oil dipstick, which simultaneously functions as an oil filler plug and leave it in place without removing it

below

In this case, the used oil will drain off without residue.

After the old oil is completely drained, screw back the oil drain plug

Be careful not to use too much force when tightening the plug, as this could damage the threads in the aluminum crankcase of the ATV engine.

New oil can now be added. The ATV's engine is equipped with both a dipstick and a viewing window on the bottom of the engine.

It is better to focus on the viewing window. The oil level should be approximately at the top of the oil.

The engine is splash lubricated, too much oil is better than too little. The ATV engine is equipped with a breather at the top, the excess will come out through it without damaging the gaskets and seals. Of course, you should not get involved in overflowing oil into the engine either. Oil should be poured through the hole in which the oil dipstick is installed

After the oil has been filled, screw the dipstick back into place. Start the engine and let it idle for about 30 seconds. Stop the engine, let the ATV stand still on level ground for about 30 seconds. If the oil level has dropped, the oil must be topped up.

If the level is correct, you can proceed to the next stage of maintenance work.

Servicing or replacing the air filter on a MOTAX T-REX SUPER LUX 9 4-stroke gasoline ATV0017

Almost all 2017-2019 ATVs a serviceable foam rubber filter is installed for cleaning the air entering the carburetor. If the filter element is intact, not torn, then it is allowed to simply rinse it without changing it to a new one.

The first thing to do is disconnect the filter from the ATV carburetor.

Filter, worm-drive clamp, Phillips screwdriver required for removal

Loosen the clamp and tighten the air filter

The MOTAX uses two types of filters. Foam rubber, as in the photo above and a filter with a metal mesh. The principle of their maintenance is similar, the used ATV filter must be washed and then impregnated with a special oil, such as MOTUL.

To wash the filter element, you can use both special liquids (for cleaning carburetors) and ordinary liquids - gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, water from Fairy for washing dishes.

The filter must be washed carefully to avoid damaging the filter element.

After the filter has been washed, it must be dried and soaked in oil. Oil penetrates through the pores of the filter element, lingering in them, thereby helping to trap the smallest particles of dust and dirt. It is necessary to impregnate the filter evenly, without gaps. Any, even the smallest gap, is a weak point through which dirt and dust will surely get into the engine, subjecting it to premature wear

After oil is applied to the filter, you need to take a regular plastic bag, put it on the filter and rub the applied oil on the surface of the filter element.

The oil is now evenly distributed over the surface of the filter element. No gaps or voids.

Reinstall the filter, leaving the filter bag in place for now to avoid getting your hands dirty. Before installation, it is recommended to lubricate the rubber seat with engine oil

Tighten the clamp with a screwdriver

Remove the bag from the filter. Done - the air filter has been serviced, you can proceed to the next stage of the ATV maintenance work.

Replacing Spark Plug on MOTAX T-REX SUPER LUX 4-stroke Gasoline ATV

NGK C7HSA Spark Plug

Requires 16 Spark Plug to ignite mixture on MOTAX ATVs with 125cc engine

MOTAX T - REX SUPER LUX0003

Remove the spark plug cap from the spark plug, put the cap on the spark plug and turn it counterclockwise.

Install the new spark plug in reverse order. We tighten the candle with sufficient force, but at the same time carefully so as not to break the threads in the head of the engine block. The applied force on the key should be smooth and moderate.

After the spark plug has been replaced, it's time to service the ATV's suspension.

The MOTAX ATV's suspension joints are equipped with grease fittings that are designed to force grease into the ball joint using a special grease gun.

The same grease fittings are provided to lubricate the

steering shaft and

rear swingarm ATV's suspension requires a special grease gun and grease for the pivot joints.

Any type of grease gun can be used, but we find the most convenient gun with a flexible nose, designed to work with hard-to-reach suspension grease points

MOTUL Tech Grease 300 is an excellent lubricant.0003

Once the syringe is ready for use, put its head on the grease fitting of the suspension assembly to be lubricated injected with a syringe can damage them. In order to control the supply of oil to the lubricated unit, we recommend that you keep your fingers free from the syringe on the rubber boot. Thus, it will be possible to feel when the lubricant passes through the swivel and its excess begins to come out. At this point, the injection of lubricant into the joint must be stopped

Wipe off excess grease with a rag or rag and put a protective cap on the grease fitting

All suspension units equipped with grease fittings are sprayed in this way.

To lubricate the steering shaft, put the syringe head on the grease fitting it is equipped with. passed through the entire node and is no longer required.

To service the ATV's drive chain, jack up the rear axle of the ATV so that the wheels turn freely in the air, but the ATV maintains a stable position.

mud. For this work, you can use the special tool MOTUL or regular gasoline and a brush. It is better to install a pan under the ATV so that the remnants of the old grease and cleaning agent flow into it. To do this, you can use the same canister that was used to drain the used oil from the engine.

The chain should be thoroughly rinsed from the inside and the outside by turning the ATV wheel and thereby shifting it

Apply new lubricant only on a dry, clean surface, so after washing the chain should be wiped with a rag or rag

Please note that the ATV during the performance of these works, for safety reasons, it must be de-energized. Be careful not to get your hands between the drive chain and the star.

ATV chain can be lubricated with any lubricant specifically designed for this purpose. Chain lubricant is sold in aerosol cans. We recommend using MOTUL C3 off Road

Lubrication should be applied on the inside and outside of the chain, on both rows of links.

A chain tensioner is installed on MOTAX ATVs. This assembly is flushed and lubricated during maintenance along with the chain

Pull the roller down and loosen the chain with one hand, check for slack with the other by pressing the chain from the bottom up

If the chain slack is more than 1. 5 cm, the chain tension must be adjusted.

To adjust the tension of the chain, loosen the rear bottom bracket at the top and bottom using the 17 and 14 wrenches.

Next, tighten the chain with tensioners. Chain tensioners are installed on both sides of the carriage and it is necessary to adjust the chain tension both simultaneously and evenly. Otherwise, the axle of the ATV will be skewed

That is, if the nut was tightened three turns on one tensioner, then the same must be done on the second tensioner.

Retract the roller and check the chain tension. After the chain tension is adjusted, tighten the nuts securing the rear carriage of the ATV.

Pay special attention to the position of the speed sensor, which is mounted on one of the bottom bracket bolts. Please note that the sensor must be installed flush with the holes in the driven star into which the magnets are inserted. These magnets during movement transmit signals to the sensor, which converts them and transmits them to the dashboard of the ATV

figure out how to do it right

Why you need to monitor the condition of engine oil in an ATV:

In any mechanism, regardless of its complexity, there is such a basic physical phenomenon as friction. Friction has the greatest force during the running-in period, when the articulated links are first rubbed against each other. However, the end of the break-in period does not mean that there will be no more friction in the mechanisms. In order to minimize the negative consequences of this very friction, oils are used: they act as a lubricant and cool the rubbing surfaces.

Engine oil, like other similar fuels and lubricants, has a certain resource. Besides the fact that over time it loses its astringent and lubricating properties, the oil also becomes contaminated from dust, dirt and water. The presence of impurities further reduces the quality of the oil - and as a result, instead of being useful, it can harm the lubricated surfaces.

Is it necessary to choose special ATV oils?

Most often, this question implies "is it possible to pour car oil into an ATV." We carried out a detailed analysis of this topic in the corresponding article on our channel in Yandex. Zen. There we sorted out popular myths and misconceptions, and at the same time talked about the possible consequences of such experiments.

How to choose the right ATV oil:

The easiest way is to look at the manufacturer's recommendations in the owner's manual that came with your ATV. Also, with this question, you can contact the official dealer or service employees at the store where the equipment was purchased.

Important: we remind you that the use of oil other than the recommended one may cause a malfunction, which, in turn, may be out of warranty due to violation of operating conditions.

However, do not forget that the manufacturer gives average recommendations, which do not always take into account, for example, rides in the cold season, when standard 10w40 oil significantly loses its working properties. Therefore, the best option would be the following: first select the right oil according to the parameters, and then consult with the dealer about the correct choice.

1. Synthetic . They are produced by chemical synthesis, which allows to achieve a high degree of uniformity and the absence of unnecessary impurities, which, in turn, ensures maximum stability of the mixture.

Pros: practically does not change its properties with temperature changes, while maintaining its fluidity and working qualities both in heat and in cold.

Cons: high price tag.

2. Mineral . They are produced by processing petroleum products or industrial crops, followed by multi-stage purification.

Pros: affordable price, high efficiency subject to temperature conditions.

Cons: at negative temperatures it thickens quickly, at too high temperatures there is a high risk of burnout of stabilizing additives.

3. Semi-synthetic . The golden mean between the first and second type of oils, offering decent quality fuels and lubricants for reasonable money. As a rule, manufacturers adhere to a ratio of 30-40% synthetics to 60-70% mineral, but 50/50 oils are also found.

Pros and cons: in short, semi-synthetics are inferior in quality to pure synthetics, but clearly superior to mineral oil. In particular, this applies to cooling and lubricating properties. It is quite cheap, more resistant to low temperatures, but its limit is negative temperatures not lower than -10-15°C.

For two-stroke and four-stroke engine models, oils differ in their composition, so when buying, pay attention to the label: the indicated type of oil must match the type of engine installed on your ATV.

The final characteristic, which plays an important role in further operation, is the viscosity of the oil. In simple terms, this parameter is responsible for the ability of the oil to maintain fluidity and its lubricating and cooling properties at a certain temperature. To make it easier for owners of equipment to choose engine oil for an ATV, car and other equipment, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) classification was created.

We won't bore you with the history of markings, deciphering meanings like "take the bottom value and subtract 40" and a long lecture on the topic "W means Winter, but does not mean that the oil is winter." Let's just give a visual table with which you can determine the viscosity of the oil that is suitable for the desired temperature range:

Note: there is also an API (American Petroleum Institute) classification, but in our case it is not relevant, since it focuses on diesel engines, commercial vehicles and gasoline heavy trucks. You can also find the JASO classification, created by Japanese engineers. However, in our market, if it flickers, it is duplicated by the usual SAE.

What's next?

And then it all depends on your ATV model and manufacturer's recommendations. For example, on medium-sized Avantis models like the Hunter 200 Big, an oil change should be done every 10 hours or 200 kilometers. A full change requires 0.8 liters of oil*, recommended is SAE 10W-40 for four-stroke engines.
