This tutorial explains how to draw anime and manga style eyes from the side view in different states and with different expressions using step by step examples.
Anime eyes side viewAnime eyes are usually drawn much larger than real eyes in relation to the head and often tend to be vertically stretched. However they are still based on real eyes and understanding how real eyes and eyelids function can be helpful when drawing anime eyes.
Eyes are basically a sphere (3d circle). The eyes rotate upwards when looking up and downwards when looking down. The eyelids act as a sort of cover pulled around the eyes.
In their natural position the eyelids move closer together when the eyes squint and farther apart when the eyes open wide.
When the eyes look up the top eyelid raises.
When the eyes look down the top eyelid lowers.
How eyes closeWhen the eyes close completely in a relaxes state (not squinting) the top eyelid actually moves all the way to the bottom eyelid while the bottom eyelid remains in place.
To place anime eyes on the head form the side view (or front view) simply divide the head in two vertically and draw the eyes below that line.
Real eyes are located directly on the halfway line. If you are drawing in a more realistic anime style you may consider moving the eyes further up.
For normal open anime eyes in the side view draw the top of the iris lightly covered by the top eyelid and draw the eyebrow in a natural state slightly above the eye.
For startled anime eyes from the side view draw the iris slightly smaller than normal. Draw the top eyelid raised so that it just barely touches the top of the iris. Draw the bottom eyelid below the iris. Draw the eyelids slightly raised.
The reason for making the iris smaller is that because as was already mentioned anime eyes are often vertically stretched making it hard to put enough distance between the eyes and the eyelids to give that startled look.
For embarrassed anime eyes from the side view draw the iris looking down with a large part of it covered by the bottom eyelid. Draw the top eyelid slightly lower than normal but not touching the iris. Draw the eyelids in an upside down (compared to natural state) curve.
For determined anime eyes from the side view draw them slightly squinted and the eyebrows in a “wave” sort of shape lowering towards the direction in which the eyes are looking.
For surprised anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes wide open and draw the eyebrows raised.
For tired anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes looking down. Draw the top eyelid about halfway down covering a large part of the eye. Draw the eyelids with a lighter curve than a normal expression.
For angry anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes squinted and draw the eyebrows lowering down towards the direction in which the eyes are looking. Draw the lowest part of the eyebrows so that it’s basically lined up with the top of the eyes.
For upset anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes squinted and looking down. Draw the eyebrows in an upside down curve raised towards the direction in which the eyes are facing.
For scared anime eyes from the side view draw them wide open and draw the iris significantly smaller than normal. You want to leave a lot of space between the iris and the eyelids. As already mentioned it can be hard to leave enough space between the eyes and the eyelids when drawing anime eyes as the irises and pupils are often vertically stretched. For this reason you can draw the irises/pupils smaller for certain expressions.
For puzzled anime eyes from the side view draw them looking slightly upwards. Draw the top eyelids raised but still covering a significant portion of the iris. Draw the eyebrows slightly raised as well.
For relaxed closed anime eyes from the side view draw them as pretty much just the eyelashes. In this example it may appear like there is a lot of empty space between the eyebrows and the eyes but remember that it’s the top eyelid that lowers down so that blank space actually represents the eye covered by the eyelid.
For content anime eyes from the side view draw them completely closed. Unlike the closed eyes in their relaxed state though you will have the bottom eyelids slightly raised. The slightly raised bottom eyelids will also cause the eyelashes to be angled slightly upwards so draw accordingly. Draw the eyebrows raised as well.
It’s not too difficult to draw anime eyes from the side view as long as you are aware of how eyes behave in different states and expressions as well as some tricks specific to anime (such as drawing smaller irises/pupils for scared eyes for example).

Eyes in anime characters play an important role, because thanks to them you can learn a lot about the character. In this tutorial, I will show you several ways to draw anime eyes.
For this we need:
First you need to remember that the distance between the eyes should always be in one eye. (although sometimes it happens that the distance may be slightly less or more, but this should not be so striking)
Now let's analyze the location of the eyes in different angles. Since almost everyone draws eyes looking straight ahead, I will not depict them.
Looking at everything in detail, you can see that between the eyes there is also a place in one eye. You can also see that the further located eye is smaller in width, but the same in length.
Pose yourself in the mirror, looking at your eyes from different angles. So you can more easily imagine in your head how the eyes should be drawn.
You also need to remember that the highlights are on one side of the eyes.
Now let's start looking at how to draw. In the first method, we start drawing from the iris itself. The advantage is that anime eyes, or rather their iris, are not always round. It can also be more oval. Experiment.
The second way starts by drawing the upper eyelid and extending two guide lines that will give us some relief while drawing the lower eyelid.
Honestly? I never liked this method, but suddenly you will fall in love with it.
The third way is somewhat similar to the second. Also, first draw the upper eyelid, or an approximate image of the eye. And then we detail everything.
The fourth way can also suit more cartoonish and realistic styles. It all starts with the fact that we draw a whole eyeball. Here you can let your imagination run wild and draw eyes as you want. Even the eyes of Tadashi (City of Heroes), even the eyes of Johnny Depp. But here you can only see more anime eyes.
Now let's start drawing the eyes themselves. We will not take compound eyes and take simpler ones. To begin with, it is worth marking the location of the eyes on the sheet.
We make approximate eye markings. Never be afraid to add other help lines you need.
Add some small details and start linting.
Lined up? Now we erase the auxiliary lines and the eyes are ready! The main thing is not to be afraid to try something new. Even you can come up with a new way of drawing eyes and share with everyone~

Today we will try to draw anime eyes. Without eyebrows, only the main part of the eye. (PS I'm not an artist). I draw in sai, but you will need:
There are a large number of schemes and constructions for drawing an eye, here are some of them: a triangle, an arc.
draw the main outline of the eye.
Eyelashes are the most important thing. don't draw them mindlessly! there are more eyelashes in the corner of the eye, and there are very few of them on the lower eyelid.
draw the pupil and main highlights. Here only your imagination plays a role!
We draw the upper eyelid, the lower one at your discretion.
Primary pupillary dimming often occurs in three forms. 1-sharp dimming, 2-smooth, 3-lower pupil girth.

Today I draw an eye in anime style. Simple and fast. From the materials, take what is closer to you, there are no restrictions. I'll take a pencil, because because.
The first step is to draw two half-bent halves from the oval, leaving a gap between them.
I add an eyebrow, eyelashes, mucous part of the eye. The main thing is not to overdo it with eyelashes, make them bent towards the end, arrange them randomly, put them on top of each other to add realism. The closer to the inner corner of the eye, the less often they become. With the lower eyelashes, the same topic, except that there are fewer of them, although if you want to draw a female caterpillar, then please, again, I do not forbid anything. I made an eyebrow in the form of a drop, you can choose any other shape that you like.
Draw the upper eyelid. Just two lines superimposed on each other.
Pupil and iris. First, draw the largest oval, then, inside the large one, another one, a little smaller. To this whole structure we figure out the smallest oval - a highlight. A purely classic arrangement of highlights in OnYama. Erase extra lines.
Add volume to the brow so it doesn't look like a pancake. I paint a rainbow. The closer to the pupil, the less bright it is. The eye is ready. Please point out errors, I will be grateful. Everyone's opinion matters to me. Share your drawings in the comments. Thank you!

Hello everyone, in this tutorial I will show you how to draw anime eyes. First of all I draw two stripes on top and bottom. then I make two squares 3cm wide. Note that there should not be a large distance between the eyes.
now erase all unnecessary and draw eyelashes.
In this step we draw the iris inside the eye.
now we are erasing the two squares we used to draw the eyes.
now inside the eyes we draw the pupil.
At this stage we draw highlights inside the eye. One glare must be larger than the other.
draw two stripes that will mark the beginning and end of the shadows.
take an HB pencil and stroke the entire eye.
now take the 4B pencil and stroke the places where the shadows should be.
take a blender / piece of paper and blend our shadows.
Now take the 4B pencil and color in the pupil and darken the shadows.
again take the blender and blend the shadows.
now take the eraser and make highlights.
that's what we should get.
