Once snow starts piling up, ATV and UTV owners have a leg up over those wrangling shovels and snow blowers by hand. Outfitting your off-road vehicle (ORV) with a snow plow makes winter your playground: You no longer need to fear those blizzard-ridden forecasts. Rather, you might even start looking forward to them! After all, keeping your driveway or access roads clear when you’ve got a plow on your rig is not only a breeze: It can also be downright fun.
A full winter workout of plowing requires that your ATV or your UTV is in tiptop shape, especially considering the extra load shoving and piling snow puts on your machine. Take time before the snow comes to give your ORV a thorough once-over and tend to any major upkeep issues. Many riders do this in the fall while the weather’s still pleasant, which helps them roll into the plowing season with a bit more confidence to tackle what Mother Nature throws their way.
During the winter plowing season, you’ll still want to stay on top of the routine inspections and maintenance you should be carrying out whenever you use your machine. Make sure fluid levels are adequate.
You’ll also want to make sure you’ve equipped your four wheeler or side by side (SxS) with the proper tires to handle well in snow. Tracks may be helpful in improving your traction in areas with extreme snowfall.
Check your owner’s manual to make sure your machine is powerful enough to wield a plow and shove and haul snow. An underpowered machine may simply be unable to push through drifts; it may also suffer expensive damage from being overtaxed. A bigger engine can handle larger plows and heavier snow.
When it comes to ATVs vs. UTVs for snow plowing, context matters. If you’ve got just a small walkway or driveway to keep clear, a narrow ATV outfitted with a small plow may do just fine. For bigger driveways, access roads, and other larger areas, a UTV capable of handling a heavier, wider plow is often the better route.
Keep in mind there are different strategies for snow-plowing with an ORV, from directly pushing snow into heaping drifts to angling it into windrows you maintain all season long.
Just going out and powering through the snow with your 4-wheeler plow may not be the right approach. Make sure you’re paying attention to the thickness of the snowpack and adjusting the plow depth accordingly: You don’t want your plow blade to be digging into bare earth or pavement. If you’re in a climate where snow tends to accumulate throughout the winter, you’ll likely be lowering your plow over time; early in the season, or when snowpacks are scanty, keep your plow higher.
You also want to keep in mind the aspect or incline of the ground you’re plowing. A driveway, for example should ideally slope a little bit away from your garage or house. Here’s where adjusting the angle of our plow comes into play.
Besides considering the amount of space you’re likely to be plowing, think about the amount of snow your location typically receives as well as its relative wetness. More and/heavier snow may require a bigger engine and larger ORV.
While we’re discussing the depth and angle of your snow plow, we’ll throw in an extra tip about avoiding mishaps or all-out disasters. Before the snow falls, make sure the areas you’ll be plowing are clear of as many obstacles as possible, and mark permanent obstacles such as retaining walls, well heads, prized garden beds, and the like with reflective or flagged poles.
After you’ve wrapped up your plowing for the day, the job’s not done: You want to clean off the plow attachment and stow it correctly to minimize the chance of damage. Knock or wipe off any snow, ice chunks, or dirt that are clinging to the plow; left on, they may freeze and become that much harder to dislodge, as well as encourage rust on the blade. Lower the plow to the ground when you park to avoid unnecessary strain on your machine’s winch and suspension.
Think your quad or UTV is only useful on those spring-through-fall trails? Think again: You can put that ORV to work all winter long with the right plow attachment and associated accessories. Choose the right plow and accessories, and you’ll be the neighborhood hero.
ATV plow will be an excellent solution for those who have suburban household plots, access to which the tractor is difficult or impossible at all, or if there is not enough space on the plot for the tractor driver to make the necessary maneuvers.
Recently, readers of our site very often turn to us with a request to place materials on attachments for an ATV, and we decided to open a whole series of articles on this topic with the topic of making a plow for an ATV with our own hands.
Visually, there is nothing complicated in the design of the plow, but everything is not as simple as it seems at first glance, since the plow is a very thin agricultural tool and the quality of arable land will directly depend on the accuracy of its design and correct adjustment.
When plowing a site, it is necessary to achieve a complete turnover of the earth layer. All cut layers should be approximately the same in width and depth, and you should also aim for full coverage of fertilizer and weed seeds.
The design of the plow should provide for the ability to adjust to different conditions and soils, because the adjustment of the plow will determine the uniformity of the plowing depth, the width of the grip and the durability of the structure as a whole. So, for example, incorrect installation of the plow in height will lead to digging or, on the contrary, to deepening of the plowshare (plow body).
Let's see how the body of the plow or, as it is also called, the plowshare is arranged.
So, we decided that a plow for an ATV must have a height adjustment, it must also be easily and quickly attached to an ATV, preferably by means of a tow ball, and, of course, the plow must have a lifting mechanism for transportation and making maneuvers when plowing the site.
All these characteristics are satisfied by the author's plow, created on the basis of the device of the well-known plow "Truzhenik". The author greatly facilitated the design for ease of manufacture and improved the prototype, based on the fact that the plow will be used in conjunction with an ATV.
Let's look at the construction drawing of the Truzhenik plow:
As you can see, the plow has a massive structure and is designed to be used with a tractor, but nothing prevents us from lightening and improving it to our needs.
Do-it-yourself plow for an ATV.
The plow is made of a profile pipe with a section of 50x50 mm. Hulls pu-00. 000-01 with a working width of 25 cm were used (these are well-known shares from the plow for the MTZ motoblock), the plow is also equipped with two disc knives (they are needed on virgin soil and eventually lengthen the plow, if they are not needed, from the design they can be excluded).
The size of the plow is calculated based on the dimensions of the grip of the hull, in our case - two hulls of 25 cm each, the lifting mechanism is implemented using a winch installed on the rear trunk of the ATV, wheels 260 and 400 mm are taken from cargo carts, the coupling is standard on the ball hitch. The weight of the plow in running order is 70 kg.
To adjust the depth and position of the frame, the following was done:
As you can see, the mechanism is easy to set up and easy to manufacture.
An adjustable field wheel stroke of 4 cm has been implemented.
The furrow wheel has the same adjustment.
The attachment of the lifting mechanism, in our case it is an electric winch, looks like this:
The long side of the plow frame is 1200 mm.
Frame short side 760 mm.
Field wheel offset - 240 mm.
Furrow wheel offset - 240 mm.
As you can see, the design of this plow fully satisfies the basic necessary characteristics of a working plow, and tests in the field once again proved the thoughtfulness and coherence of the design. You can evaluate the work of the plow by watching the video clip below.
It is more expedient to use a plow (especially on virgin soil) in conjunction with an ATV, which has an engine capacity of at least 500 cubic centimeters, in order to avoid excessive load on the ATV frame, as well as on the variator belt and gearbox.
We hope that the provided material was useful for you, and next spring you will go to your site not with a shovel, but with a plow made by yourself and get real pleasure from the work done. We will be grateful if you share your developments on this topic with us in the comments to the article.
Good luck in the fields and stay with us!

ATV is a universal vehicle. Someone needs it for extreme trips over rough terrain, and for farmers and owners of household plots, it acts as an indispensable assistant. However, to work on the field, an all-terrain vehicle will need the appropriate accessories, the most popular of which is a plow.
In the "agrarian" service, ATVs have proven themselves quite well. According to statistics, one compact and nimble all-terrain vehicle can replace a whole arsenal of agricultural equipment, including a tractor. At the same time, the cost of an ATV is several times less than the market price of a tractor or, for example, a horse. Plus, the same high-performance machine can be used on the field as well as off-road – the benefits are clear.
The growing popularity of ATVs is also explained by the fact that almost any additional device, such as a plow, can be easily installed on this "workhorse". Good maneuverability, high power and increased cross-country ability of the ATV allows you to use this traditional agricultural device as efficiently as possible, to carry out a wide variety of tasks. It has been proven that the presence of a modern all-terrain vehicle with a plow in the farm increases productivity by several times - at the lowest cost of operating equipment.
Device
The ATV plow is a device that includes a wedge for cutting the soil, working surface, share and blade. The body of a modern plow is a complex system of various parts, designed in such a way as to perform all the necessary functions without deformation and breakage.
It should be noted that some farmers independently create devices for soil processing, however, these designs are seriously inferior to the factory ones: both in reliability, durability, and in efficiency.
