3 Steps to Clean & Protect a Spare Tire Cover [Guide]

by Carwash Country

In case you haven’t noticed, spare tire covers get pretty filthy and need cleaning in order to last. If you have a Hummer or really any other vehicle that has a spare tire cover on the back, you need to know how to clean it properly to avoid dry-rotting, fading, or even cracking (if you have a plastic cover).

In this blog post, I’ll break down how to clean a plastic or canvas spare tire cover and a few best practices from an auto detailing perspective to keep them in optimal shape.

Note: If you have an older Jeep Wrangler, Bronco, or older vehicle you likely have a canvas or twill spare tire cover. These are very similar to soft tops and convertible tops and can be used with convertible top or canvas cleaners and protectants.

Step 1. Wash the dirt off

No matter what type of cover you have, the first thing you want to do is to use dish liquid and a soft-bristled brush to knock the loose dirt off. I like to use auto detailing brushes since they are great for textured plastic, but you can use a wider tire brush with soft bristles. Whatever brush you use just make sure that the bristles are clean.

The reason I like to use dish soap to start is because it doesn’t contain waxes or anything meant to protect your vehicle like many car wash soaps do.

Dish liquid is great for removing stuck on substances like grease and wax and are perfect for this type of application.

Once the tire cover is free of surface dirt, you can then begin removing stains or any other imperfections.

Step 2: Use a dedicated cleaner to remove dried dirt and stains

If you’re noticing dirt and other substances that still may be on the cover, you’ll need to make sure you use the right product depending on if your cover has a plastic shell or is made of a canvas type material.

Canvas tire covers

If you’re noticing staining or embedded dirt, you may want to step up to a dedicated convertible top cleaner or canvas cleaner. These products are formulated to restore these types of materials, and can be applied using a damp cloth.

If you have a convertible, a Jeep Wrangler, or other vehicle, I would highly recommend the Bestop Soft Top Care Kit. These products clean and protect this canvas-type of material and leaves no residue. You can learn more about this kit here on Amazon and read the reviews.

If you also have a soft top, you can check out this post I wrote on cleaning/protecting it (which is similar)

Can you place spare tire covers in the washing machine?

Believe it or not many of these tire covers are machine washable, however I would not recommend washing these in a machine if they can become stretched out over time. You’re really better off washing them by hand with a soft bristled brush since many vinyl covers are quite bulky as well.

Cleaning a plastic tire cover

If you have a plastic tire cover that has any type of design on it, you’ll want to protect it to avoid fading. One product I like to use for cleaning plastic is M39 Mirror Glaze by Meguiar’s (they make a great line of professional products for plastics). This is a heavy-duty plastic cleaner and great for removing soiled plastic surfaces like a tire cover.

Why many people choose to use Armor All and other interior protectants on their tire covers, protectants really don’t do much to actually clean the pores of the plastic surface.

Have a faded plastic tire cover?

You can even go to the route of painting your spare tire cover if it’s an extremely bad shape assuming that it’s plastic.

Check out the video I created below that outlines how I like to clean prep and paint plastic surfaces:

Step 3: Apply a protectant or dressing

The last step is to protect your tire cover from the sun, rain, snow and other elements. Even though spare tire covers aren’t as close to the ground as your tires are, in my experience they are the first thing that dirty water contacts when running off your roof.

Protecting canvas and neoprene tire covers

If you have a fabric cover (neoprene or canvas) I would recommend a spray-on product like RaggTopp Fabric and Vinyl Convertable Top Protectant you can find here on Amazon. It is a pretty expensive product since it is professional-grade and contains UV protectants.

Protecting plastic or vinyl tire covers

Once you have your tire cover to a natural finish, a product like VRP by Chemical Guys can be used to apply a glossy finish that will really bring out the black color of most plastic tire covers.

Any soft foam sponge will work great as an applicator for this product, and can also be used on your trim to both protect and bring out the true color of the plastic.

Conclusion

When it comes to cleaning your vehicle’s spare tire cover, you obviously want to make sure you use the right product. For fiberglass or painted tire covers, a simple spray-on car wax that you use to wash the rest of your vehicle will be just fine.

Over time, traditional canvas tire covers can get pretty faded out due to the sun’s UV rays, but if you clean and protect it regularly, you really can help avoid it looking faded and gross.

The more you protect your tire cover (like anything) the less difficult it will be to clean each time you wash the rest of your vehicle.

Hope it helps!

Spare wheel cover | 3dx

by XmK Leave a comment

It happened, I installed HBO. And he enrolled in the ranks of economical drivers. The gas cylinder is of course toroidal, so that it does not take up extra space. Of course, he does not take up space, he is in place of the spare wheel. The balloon is a balloon, but now the spare tire takes up space in the trunk ...

Well, the spare tire is in the trunk, and okay, let it lie. “Well, okay” this is until you need to put a clean thing in the trunk. And I have a full-size spare wheel and I use it periodically on the "off-road" of our country. Ha-ha, some will say, there is so much dirty trash in the trunk and the wheel is not the saddest thing. But I'm used to the fact that my trunk is absolutely clean, without bottles, nuts and bolts. All small rubbish is placed in factory foam cases, as in the photo below (the photo is not mine, forgive me the owner of this trunk):

So what am I talking about. Well, yes, a dirty wheel in the trunk. I decided to pack it in a case. In principle, it is not a problem to buy, the price starts from 200 UAH. + UAH 30 for shipping, and at least 230 UAH. ($9.2). Not expensive. But there is one "BUT" that did not suit me, these covers are just pancakes, with a flat bottom and top. At the same time, there is still free space in the wheel disk, such a pan. And since there is practically no space left in the trunk, you need to squeeze the benefit out of everything. I decided that it was imperative to use the volume inside the wheel itself. I glanced at the offers on the Internet, I did not find a suitable offer, maybe I was looking badly. Decided to make my own cover.

And here's the case, my wife asked me to take her to a textile store, for one thing I'll look at the material for myself. On my knees I threw a sketch and calculated the area of the patterns (I give the dimensions below), and it turned out 2 m 2 . The search for fabric was carried out according to the criterion of the cheapest and most practical. The choice fell on raincoat fabric or a type of raincoat fabric, I don’t remember exactly (slippery synthetic sports bags are sewn from such a fabric). And the price is democratic about 47 UAH per linear meter, I took two meters, taking into account that the width is 1.5 meters, I got 3 m 2 . In the same store I took a 2m long zipper and two runners at a price of 37 UAH. for all. Satisfied with our purchases, my wife and I went home.

First of all I corrected the sketch. I have tires 205x55 R16, hence the dimensions:

On the left, as you can see, are the overall dimensions. On the right, the dimensions of the patterns, taking into account the allowances for the seam, gave a bit too much, but nothing, there is a lot of material. The height of the cover should be 220 mm, and the two sides should be 105 mm each, since the zipper will add about 10 mm. The lining must be marked in place, it fixes the zipper so that it does not diverge, covers the offal, connects the upper and lower parts of the cover and it can be used to increase the diameter of the cover if the wheel does not fit. Well, I ran ahead. And now we make a pattern. In order not to guess 630 mm, I put the wheel on the material and outlined it.

Then I added a seam allowance by hand.

The result should be 6 blanks. First, we outline the zipper and the elements of the inner valve. If we've done it, we'll take out the sewing machine. If there is no sewing machine, this is a problem, you will have to look for neighbors or relatives. We have this unit in our family, and we also have some experience in sewing on the Soviet Chaika machine. True, the experience is ancient, but I still remember how to thread the bobbin. And here is the needlework unit:

Below is an intermediate result. A zipper is sewn in and the lower part of the cover is folded.

Well, a few machine hours later, the finished product. In the photo, everything is turned inside out, giblets. The basting threads have not been cut yet.

Stitching is the easiest of all the work, since I didn’t need much beauty, I did the seams at a speed above average. The most tedious and long work was basting blanks. For all the work, not counting the trip to the store, I spent half a day. So, it can't even be called a "weekend product". Well, now a photo of how it all looks:

Before

After

In terms of aesthetics, I'm far from Chinese light industry, but I'm very pleased with the functionality. And now let's figure out how much I paid for the cover, but how much - 131 UAH. ($5.24). Both beneficial and practical. I don't regret the time I wasted.

    How to sew wheel covers yourself

    There are a huge number of all kinds of accessories for cars. Some of them cost a lot of money, but do not bring the expected benefits.

    Others cost a relatively small amount, but for this money they can provide additional features and benefits. And they can be made by hand. Covers for automobile wheels should be safely attributed to the number of such accessories.

    Not all motorists understand why they are needed. But in reality, it is a useful addition to ensure the correct seasonal storage of tires and the eventual transport of tires.

    Why covers are needed

    Everyone understands why car seat covers are used. They perform a protective and decorative function. Plus, some come with a built-in massager or heating.

    Wheel covers have a slightly different task. Basically, they are purchased or they decide to sew covers with their own hands for the wheels of their own car in order to provide seasonal storage. It was for this that the first samples of protective casings were created.

    A huge variety of products is on sale. Some protect only the outer part of the tire without covering the disc. Others close the tire completely. There are models with special handles and puffs, which make it easier to transport and move from place to place. Many cases designed for long-term wheel storage offer additional hooks.

    There is another variety. These are covers for spares. Usually, thinner material is used for their manufacture. But it is strongly not recommended to use such casings for long-term seasonal storage. Key requirements relate to moisture protection, UV resistance and effective ventilation. Spare wheel covers are usually not endowed with such properties. That's why you should be careful when buying.

    Varieties

    Before deciding to sew an accessory, you need to decide what they are. This will allow you to understand what exactly is suitable specifically for your situation.

    In order to store the wheel from your car in the season when another set is on the car, you need a quality cover. You can sew it with your own hands, based on the features of finished factory models.

    All tire covers can be divided into 3 categories:

    • open models;
    • covers with zipper;
    • tightening accessories.

    All types shown can be sewn for car wheels. These covers are suitable for any car. The only question is what you need.

    Each option presented requires more detailed consideration.

    There are no fasteners on open car covers. They cover only the outer part of the tire, that is, only the rubber. Very easy to use, popular to use. Mainly used as a spare tire cover. Allows you to quickly and easily remove the wheel and pack it back. Since it does not completely close the tire, there is a risk of staining the upholstery during transportation in the cabin. If seasonal storage does not interest you, then this option will be quite suitable. It is perfectly acceptable to keep tires in such cases for several weeks.

    It is to protect against dirt and prolong the life of car seats that a T-shirt can be used, some original knitted accessory, etc. car. From the standpoint of practicality, the massage case and heated cases attract attention.

    Another type of wheel cover is the zipper accessory. The teeth on the zipper are metal and plastic. It is difficult to give preference to any of them. Metal is more durable, but can rust over time. Plastic is more practical and more convenient to use, but when the permissible load is exceeded, it bursts and breaks. Much depends on the quality of the plastic itself. On cheap accessories, short-lived zippers are used, which after several openings and closings may require replacement. And sewing a new zipper in the studio will be very expensive. It is better to initially choose a good quality zipper.

    Drawstring pouches use a cord or ribbon that is threaded around. By tightening and tying the cord, the tire closes completely. Convenient and functional. But it is not suitable for a spare tire, because in severe frost it can be a problem to quickly untie the knot. It's a great option for seasonal storage.

    The drawstring pouch is the most popular do-it-yourself component. It is easy to make, it does not require special skills and a lot of effort. But the result often exceeds expectations, and turns out to be no worse than finished factory products.

    Materials and Tools Needed

    While the machine is running on one set of tires, the second set can wait in the garage. It will be optimal for such purposes to use a set of auto covers. For tailoring covers for all wheels, you can take it with your own hands.

    The quality of the product and its effectiveness depends largely on the material used. It is not recommended to take frankly cheap material, since such fabrics are short-lived, they quickly tear. Plus, the task of the car cover is to provide protection against moisture, creating optimal conditions for long-term storage. Here a huge role is played by the ability to protect against the penetration of water, but at the same time guarantee the ventilation of the tire.

    To the question of how to choose the material. For the production of good quality car covers, a fabric called "oxford" or fabrics made using a similar technology are often used.

    Oxford is a special synthetic material. It is characterized by a special type of weaving, which is called gunny or Panama weaving. When weaving the fibers used, a dense web is formed, which includes embossed and staggered squares. Usually further treated with PVC or polyurethane. This creates the effect of water resistance. Usually oxford is made on the basis of nylon or polyester.

    The material has excellent UV protection. At the same time, it provides ventilation inside the case. In order to better circulate air inside, several special ventilation holes are made.

    If you decide to sew a cover with your own hands, you can buy an oxford or replace it with a more budget raincoat. The choice is yours.

    For work you will need:

    • the required piece of the selected material;
    • insulation about 10 mm thick;
    • drawstring cord;
    • fabric-to-insulation adhesive;
    • strong threads;
    • scissors;
    • chalk;
    • pencil;
    • sewing machine, etc.

    If you use high-quality oxford, then additional insulation is not necessary. When using raincoat fabric, it will definitely not be superfluous, since it will protect the disc from possible scratches and damage.

    Do it yourself

    Now let's talk in more detail about how you can sew covers for the wheels of your car.

    The fabrication procedure will be discussed using the drawstring boot as an example.

    If you have experience with pattern making and sewing machine, then sewing wheel covers for your own car is not difficult. Plus, you can always ask for help from your needlewoman wife.

    Having decided to make wheel covers yourself, in order to store the wheels of the car outside the season of their use, you can follow the instructions below.

    • First, measure the wheel diameter. One can. Patterns are made the same for all 4 wheels of the vehicle. It depends on the measurements how much material is required for the purchase and sewing of protective covers.
    • After taking measurements for the future cape on the wheels of your car, add about 15 mm to the diameter for the seam, and another 20 mm for easier insertion of the wheel into the boot.
    • On the material you have chosen for the accessory, draw a circle of the appropriate size.
    • Cut out the workpiece with sharp scissors. Initially, it is recommended to make only one blank. If something goes wrong, you risk ruining a small amount of material. After correcting your mistakes or making sure that the actions are correct, finish the rest of the blanks.
    • If necessary, then insert sealing material into the bottom of the workpiece. It can be glued or sewn on by sewing on a typewriter.
    • Measure wheel circumference and width.
    • Cut out another blank from the selected material. This will be the stripe.
    • These dimensions are required for the strip. It will be 2-2.5 times the width of the wheel. The length is 5 cm longer than the circumference of the tire.
    • Both blanks are to be connected to each other by sewing on a sewing machine.
    • The free edge of the strip should be folded over and stitched so that a kind of tunnel forms inside.
    • A cord of sufficient strength is passed through this tunnel. It should be enough to lift the wheel without the risk of breaking and even hang it in a case.
    • Taking into account the possible stresses on the seams, it is recommended to use the strongest possible threads for their execution.
    • Now put the tire inside the cover, tighten the cord, fix it.

    An additional handle can be sewn onto the outside of the cover. For these purposes, a durable synthetic material of the desired thickness is suitable.

    Aftercare

    In order for car covers that store wheels to serve for a long time and effectively, they need proper care.

    Just follow a few simple rules. Namely:
