How to make dog beds out of old tires

DIY Dog Bed From A Recycled Tire! – Practically Functional

FacebookPinEmailPrint

Earth Day is coming up, and you know how much I love recycled crafts! I’ve created stuff out of old light bulbs, toilet paper rolls, empty beer bottles, and more, so when Discount Tire challenged me to turn an old tire into a cool project, I was super excited. There are tons of things you can do with an old tire, but I decided that the best project would be something for our new puppy, so I made a DIY dog bed out of a recycled tire!

Fawkes totally loves her new bed! She likes to sleep curled up, so the interior of the tire is the perfect size for her, and when she’s awake, she likes to rest her head on the hard rubber edges while chewing on her rawhide. And the best part is, this entire project was quick and easy to do; the longest part was waiting for the paint to dry!

DIY Dog Bed From A Recycled Tire

  • 1 hour (time spent doing stuff)
  • 1 hour (time spent waiting around)
  • 2 hours (total project time)
Tools
  • a stiff bristle brush
  • soap and water (dish soap works great!)
Materials
  • an old tire (just visit Discount Tire; they’d be happy to find an old tire for you and have you recycle it!)
  • spray paint (make sure it’s designed to stick to rubber; I used Rustoleum Painter’s Touch 2x in Gloss Berry Pink for this tire)
  • sticky felt pads
  • a round pet bed (anything from 30″ round to 34″ round should work for a regular tire)

The guys at the Discount Tire store I went to were super helpful! I told them what I had planned for the tire and they made sure to find one with really good tread to make the outside more interesting after it was painted!

Instructions

Start by cleaning your tire. Paint won’t stick to dirt and dust, so hose the tire down and give it a good scrub with some soapy water and a stiff bristle brush. I also picked out all the tiny rocks that were stuck in the treads using an old nail, but I’m a little OCD; feel free to skip that part if you don’t mind a few little rocks!

Once you’ve scrubbed down all the outer surfaces of the tire, rinse it off with clean water and set it out to dry.

Once it’s dry, set the tire up on its edge and lightly spray the tire with spray paint, holding the can about 8 inches away from the tire. Because I couldn’t paint all sides of the tire at once, I did four “painting sessions” for this tire. I did one coat on the top half of the tire, then, once the paint had dried, I rotated the tire and painted the “bottom” half. Then after the first coat was dry, I did a second coat on the top half of the tire, then rotated again to do a second coat on the bottom half.

Once the paint is completely dry, it’s time to bring the tire inside! You can use little felt sticky feet or furniture sliders to protect your floors from the tire and protect the paint job on the tire.

Lay the tire down and stuff a round pillow or dog bed inside of the tire, and you’re done!

I used a 34″ round dog bed as the cushion inside the tire and it fits perfectly! It’s great because it has a washable cover, so if the bed ever gets dirty I can just pull out the cushion, wash it, and put it all back together again once it’s clean!

She totally loves it, but she had to “break it in” a little first. What a silly puppy!

Fawkes loves her new dog bed! She had to fluff the pillow a bit first but now it’s perfect! Tutorial will be on the blog tomorrow! #puppy #puppiesofinstagram #Fawkes #dog #dogsofinstagram #pitbull #rescuedog #rescuetails #adoptdontshop

But the guys at Discount Tire were really great and totally helpful when I told them what I had planned, and all opinions in this post are 100% my own. I would never write a post about something I didn’t think was useful or interesting for you guys, and Practically Functional will only publish sponsored posts for companies or products I love and believe in! 🙂

How to Make a Pet Bed out of an Old Tire

4 minutes

Does your pet need its own space? Do you have an old tyre you can no longer use? In this article, we'll show you some original ways to make a beautiful bed for your favorite pet.

Last update: 28 January, 2021

Our pets hold a special place in our hearts and our homes. They need to have their own little space where they can lie down and spend time with you. However, pet beds are often expensive if you buy them from pet stores. So, in this article, we’ll show you some creative ways to make your own pet bed without spending a penny.

Believe it or not, you can actually recycle an old tire to create a beautiful and comfortable bed for your dog, cat, or any other pet you own. Recycle, save money, and get creative with these original ideas.

Make and decorate a pet bed

The easiest and most popular way to do this is to use the original shape of the tire, rather than trying to reshape it. Next, we’ll show you how to paint and decorate a tire to create the perfect little bed for your pet. You’re going to need the following materials:

  • Paint
  • Foam or an old pillow or cushion
  • A paint brush
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric scissors
  • Medium sized paint brush
  • Fabric

Before you start painting, you’ll need to give your tire a deep clean to get rid of any dirt. Then leave it to dry.

Paint the surface

You can use whatever color you want to decorate your tire. Paint the entire outside surface, or just part of it – whatever you like best. One nice idea is to use the half-painted effect, painting just the upper-half of the tire.

The tire will form the base of your pet bed. Leave it for several hours until it’s completely dry, before going on to make the cushion.

If you want to give your pet bed a fun and original look, you could use stamps to cover it in little paw prints, using a tone that contrasts with the base color. You could also write your pet’s name on the front of their bed. Using stamps and stencils is a quick and easy way to get really good results.

Another nice way to paint your tire is to decorate it to look like a donut. Apply an irregular coating of paint to the top of the tire to look like icing, and use a brown or sandy tone on the bottom half to make the doughy base. Then, you can even use multi-colored paint to create authentic-looking sprinkles. Choose fabrics to match, and you’ll have a really fun donut pet bed.

Make the cushion for your pet bed

Once your tire is dry, you can go on to make the cushion for your pet bed. Take the measuring tape and use it to measure the diameter of the interior of the tire, so that you know how big your cushion needs to be. Use these measurements to sketch out the outline of your bed on the foam, then cut.

Once you’ve cut out your foam cushion, you can cover it with fabric. You can just use materials you already have in the house – like old clothes or bed sheets that you no longer use. If you want to go out and buy fabric for your pet bed, you’ll find a huge variety of materials with colorful animal patterns. If you want, you could also add a blanket and another small cushion to keep your pet warm and comfortable.

Make your own pet bed: option #2

Instead of painting the surface of your tire, you can cover it from top to bottom in fabric. Then, add the cushion, blanket, and your pet’s favorite toys. This will make it even more comfortable for your pet, as it will never be in direct contact with the cold surface of the tire.

Things to remember

Always remember to wash your pet bed regularly, as it will quickly gather a lot of dirt and pet hair. Take out the cushions and blankets and wash both them and the tire thoroughly.

This is a really interesting way to make your own DIY pet bed out of an old tire. It’s perfect for both indoors and outdoors, and you’ll be able to move it around easily.

You can use it for pets of all different shapes and sizes. Plus, if you have more than one pet and you have more than one tire, you can come up with all kinds of different designs. So, why not give it a go?

Not only a person, but also a dog needs a good rest, especially at night. Many people allow cats and dogs to sleep with them in bed. But I think that in their own sunbed the animals will be much more comfortable to sleep and rest at night.

What about the dogs in the shelter? I don’t know how it is in Russia, but a young Brazilian guy makes very nice beds for animals that live in a shelter out of old car tires. Amarillo Silva, that is the name of this sweet and kind person, plans to mass-produce such beds and sell them to everyone. But he does not forget about the shelter either. For two years, Aramillo has been making such beds for dogs, bringing joy and peace to homeless animals.

In order to make a dog bed, you need to use a tire that matches the size of the animal. But in any case, the tire must be washed well and preferably degreased so that there is no dust or dirt on the tire.

The tire can then be painted and dried. And finally, we put a prepared pillow in the tire, which you can also sew with your own hands from a dense, durable fabric, stuffing it with the filler that you have at hand.

That's it. The bed for the dog from the tire is ready. And let the example of a young master from Brazil become an example for many. And kindness will not be forgotten.

Dog Bed |140 Photo Ideas + Step By Step Instructions

Even an outgoing animal like a dog needs a place to be alone. Therefore, as soon as a pet appears in the house, the first thing to do is to provide for it not only a feeding place, but also its own corner for sleeping. You can make a dog bed with your own hands from a piece of dense fabric, an old mattress or an out-of-fashion sweater.

The main points that need to be taken into account

cozy and comfortable on the lounger, when sewing it, think over every little thing:

It is better to put a removable pillow or bedding in the pet bed. In this case, at any time you can easily wash them. You can make a pair of removable pillows from the same or contrasting fabric.

But it's still better to make it yourself. In this case, you will not only be able to choose the color of the material that perfectly matches the interior of the room, but also make the product exactly according to the size of the animal.

Structurally, the square bench is quite simple, and you will need a minimum of time to make it. Products with draught-proof collars are more comfortable and used more often.

Materials required

Bed with sides

So, we present you a master class on the phased production of a bed for a dog or cat.

You will need:

  • thick fabric0006
  • foam rubber or synthetic winterizer for stuffing
  • pattern paper : if you want to get a neat product exactly to the size of the animal, you should not rely on chance and cut out the product “by eye”
  • ruler and pencil for drawing a pattern 9018 on paper, as well as chalk or a bar of dry soap for transferring the part to the fabric
  • scissors for cutting
  • enough thick threads and a sewing machine or regular sewing needle

Most fabrics shrink after washing. Therefore, it makes sense to pre-soak the fabric, dry it, iron it, and only then proceed to sewing. Otherwise, the stuffing in the sown cover will be collected in lumps.

Sewing the product

Sewing a square bed

To make the bed last longer and the edges of the fabric do not fray, work the edges of the blanks with an overlocker. Let's start sewing the product:

It is better to assemble the sides of the couch for a large animal from several pillows. Due to the greater number of seams, they will turn out to be stronger and less caking.

Bed-house

For a small dog, the feeling of security is very important. Therefore, a sleeping place in the form of a house would be an ideal option for him.

Let's describe in detail how to sew a bed for a dog in the form of a house:

At first, a pet may be wary of a bed-house. To help him get used to his new home faster, put a treat or favorite toy inside.

A bed for a dog from an old sweater

If you have an old sweater made of thick knitwear (ideally a sweatshirt) in your house, you can sew an inexpensive bed for your dog from it. This bedding will be especially dear to your pet - after all, even after a couple of washes, it will retain your scent. It is better not to use products of weak knitting - under the influence of the claws of the animal, they will quickly lose their shape and turn into tatters.

Making a dog bed out of an old sweater is easy. For this, it is enough:

A bench with a removable cover is much more convenient. It can be removed and washed at any time. To make the animal feel comfortable at any time of the year, make two such covers at once. The first, winter, is made of warm fabric, and the second is made of cotton or linen.

Round dog bed

The principle of its manufacture is similar to the previous one. The difference will be only in the form of details:

Puppies grow quite quickly, so it is not worth sewing a personal bed for them right away - they will quickly grow out of it. To make the baby feel protected, for the first time, allocate a place for him in a cardboard box by laying a mattress in it.

Wooden bed for large dogs

Blanks for a wooden bed

It is not always reasonable to make ordinary beds for large dogs with sides stuffed with filler. Under the weight of the animal, such sides will quickly flatten, and the couch will lose its shape. In this case, it makes sense to make a bed on a rigid wooden frame or make it in the form of a small bed.

So, let's describe how to make a wooden dog bed:

Wooden beds for dogs

When choosing the fabric for the mattress, keep in mind that a material that is too light will have to be washed frequently, while dark material will show hair clearly. Use a fabric with a small print to sew the cover - the faded wool on it will be less noticeable, and you will not have to vacuum the bedding so often.

Plywood booth

Plywood booth

A small plywood kennel can be placed in the house. In order not to bother with the manufacture of the roof, you can make the product in the form of a regular box with an entry hole. But a house with a gable roof will, of course, look much more interesting.

Mattress with sides

A large dog needs a lot of space to rest. Such animals often sleep with legs extended sideways or forward. They may not have enough space on a standard bedding. Therefore, it is better for them to make a dog bed in the form of a mattress.

For convenience, you can also make sides, but they are located only along the back and side walls:

Bedside table

In principle, a pet bed can have any geometric shape: it can be made not only in the form of a circle, rectangle or square, but also a pentagon or polygon. But still, you should not philosophize too much - wool and debris will constantly accumulate in numerous corners, which will be problematic to remove. Yes, and such a design will take up much more space.

A variety of materials can be used as a frame for a dog bed:

Bedside cabinet

  • an old suitcase with a bedding inside it is ideal for a medium-sized animal
  • a small dog can be placed in a small basket

5 old table and saw off its legs - and you will get an original wooden bed for your pet

  • you can use a bedside table for this purpose, if you remove a couple of bottom drawers from it
  • a real house can be obtained by sawing an entrance for a dog in the bedside table and putting a soft bedding inside the new dwelling; so that the entrance to the dwelling is not too conspicuous, it can be curtained with a decorative curtain made of thick cotton or linen
  • when replacing furniture, do not throw away the drawers of the table or chest of drawers - they will make a ready-made sleeping bed for the animal; just lay a mattress on the bottom
  • “settle” your pet on the bottom shelf of a closed coffee table - the dog will only be happy to be close to you
  • you can also use an old ottoman with a hole made on one side for a manhole
  • if you unscrew the legs from an old office chair or an ordinary chair with armrests, you can get another original look of a dog bed
  • you have long been lying idle an old baby bath ? you can also use it as a bed for your pet

If you don't want to bother with making a bed for your dog, you can just buy one. The price of a dog bed depends not only on the material of manufacture, but also on the size of the product. The range of such beds is quite large. For stuffing a sleeping bed for an animal, manufacturers often use buckwheat husks, which is very convenient - insects do not start in it.

The author of the following video suggests making an original pet bed in the form of a densely stuffed pillow. You can see clearly each of the manufacturing stages by clicking on the link:
