How To Make A Chair From Your Old Tire
Before anything else, ensure to clean your old tires thoroughly. Having clean materials is a must; otherwise, you can get bacteria or infections from dirty tires. You can use water and various cleaning agents for this matter.
After cleaning your tire, you can proceed with choosing which method you would prefer to do.
Method #1. Weaving the seat
Step #1. Drill holes
First, mark and drill 16 holes around the tire. The holes should be parallel and straight so that the weaving process will be easy.
Step #2. Paint
Get some paint with colors depending on your preferences. Start painting the base and the body of your tire. Painting your tire with bright colors is better!
Step #3. Weave
Grab your bungee cords, insert one of the ends onto the first hole, and tie the rope. Pull the other end to the other side of the tire and slip it inside the hole. Tug it inside the adjacent hole under the top of the tire and insert it upwards from the hole.
Repeat the process until the seat is covered. Copy the same steps for the horizontal weaving process.
After that, attach the tire to another tire. Drill four holes on both tires and screw them together.
Method #2. Creating a chair cushion
Step #1. Cut wood
Initially, cut a circle on plywood (17 inches or 43 cm diameter). Using heavy-duty glue, glue the wood onto the top of your tire. Let it dry for approximately 8 hours.
Step #2. Cut foam
On the other hand, cut another circle on plywood (15 inches or 38 cm diameter). Trace the measurements for the foam and cut it also. Carefully glue them together.
Step #3. Wrap fabric
Wrap the foam with fabric. You can use heavy-duty staplers for this step. Cut excess fabric from the cushion.
Adding designs and painting them is optional, but they give a better look for your tire chair. You can put some buttons on the seat as a design.
Method #3. Making a round sofa from it
Step #1. Create the lid
For the lid, cut a circle on plywood. The size may vary, depending on the diameter of your tire. Drill four holes on it, one on the top center, one on the bottom center, one on the left-center, and drill one on the right-center.
After that, wrap the lid with foam and fabric. You can use heavy-duty glue, fabric glue, or a heavy-duty stapler.
Step #2. Make the base
In making the base, wrap the tire with foam and fabric. You can use the same method on step one through using the said materials.
Step #3. Create the bottom and the legs
After making the lid and the base, you can make another circle on plywood for the bottom. Wrap the wood with fabric.
For the feet of the tire chair, create four blocks of wood. Attach the parts altogether.
Step #4. Finish with the backrest
Lastly, cut five or six pieces of wood for the backrest. Attach the woods onto the side of the tire chair. Ensure that there are spaces between each wood.
To attach them, drill the bottom of the wood. Drill the tire also and screw them together.
Note that you should check whether the wood moves or not. If the wood moves, you can use heavy-duty glue to keep them together.
Next, cut a block of foam that can cover the woods and glue it in place. Cover the backrest by sewing fabric onto it.

The tough and durable rubber used to make car tires can last even after the tread has worn out. Unfortunately, only a small number of tires are recycled or reused, and most end up in landfills. However, there are craftsmen who can give an old tire a second chance by turning it into a piece of jewelry, a roofing element, shoes, or even a house.
Flower stands.
A stack of old tires filled with earth is an easy way to set up a flower bed in your yard. The heat absorbed by the black surface of the tire will accelerate growth and enhance flowering. Another idea is to hang the tire on the wall, filling the bottom with earth.
Rugs.
Car and bike tires can be turned into durable waterproof coatings for both indoor and outdoor use. Recently, the ReTIRED Mats online store has even opened, selling rugs made from old tires. Moreover, bicycle tires are so elastic that rugs from them can be crocheted.
“After many attempts, I realized that it is easiest to knit using tent pegs. I cut out the valves and cut the tires lengthwise. Then the chamber must be thoroughly washed - it is covered from the inside with a thick layer of talc. Then I cut the camera into thin strips and sew them together. As a result, a long “thread” is obtained, from which the rug is knitted, ”Michaela, the owner of the store, says about her technology.
Belts and jewelry.
Earrings, bracelets and belts are made from old tires. In belts, you can often guess the tread of a bicycle tire.
Bicycle parking.
Rows of tires half-buried into the ground form a convenient bike rack. This is a simple and cheap solution.
Parquet.
Who would have thought that old tires could be so stylish? The Swedish company Apokalyps Labotek turns tires thrown into a landfill into parquet: first, they are ground into powder at the factory, then a little recycled plastic is added and then the parquet plates are molded.
Bags and purses.
Imagine how difficult it is to tear or even scratch a bag or wallet made from car rubber. These things can last almost forever. And Etsy, the global marketplace for unique handmade goods, already has a handful of stores offering such items: Trigo, BlowUp Online Vintage, and RubberPieces.
Swing.
Of course, there is nothing new in the very idea of creating a swing from an old tire, but if earlier a rope or a chain was only added to the tire, now the designs have become more complicated, designers create dragons, sharks, horses, dogs, elephants, dinosaurs and other figures from tires.
Playgrounds.
A swing in the shape of a horse is, of course, great, but what can you say about a whole playground made of tires. A little imagination - and your possibilities are almost endless. The photo shows two examples of such playgrounds: a dragon from Maryland, USA, and a "Rubber Tree" installed in a Thai center for refugee children by designer Annemaria van Splunter.
Shoes.
If this rubber is well suited for automotive "shoes", then it can be used to make a sole for yours. Simple Shoes creates eco-friendly boots with soles made from car treads, and on the Internet you can also find tips and drawings for making homemade sandals from old bicycle tires.
Furniture.
Furniture made from old tires or even wheels is coming into fashion and becoming more and more popular year by year.
Roof tiles.
Some companies manufacture and sell shingles from recycled car tires. However, some homeowners do not want to spend extra money and make the shingles themselves - simply by cutting the tires into strips and laying them to their liking.
Houses.
Tires are the main component in the construction of earthship-type eco-houses. Such houses are made from recycled materials, and tires filled with earth are used when laying the foundation and walls. Argentine architect Carlos Levinton designed domed tire houses for Haitians left homeless after the 2010 earthquake.
Sculptures.
Korean sculptor Yong Ho Ji found in old tires a source of inspiration and a unique material for creativity. He creates incredible sculptures from strips of car rubber glued together with synthetic resin. His works, depicting people, animals and fantastic creatures, are designed to remind viewers of the responsibility of man to nature.
There are many creative and fun ways to repurpose old tires into some useful items such as furniture, mini garden pond or flower bed.
What if we turn old tires into cute animals? For example, a frog. And let's try to make this decorative whim useful for the garden. For example, let's plant flowers in a frog tire.
You will need:
Materials:
• 3 passenger car tires and one large truck tire;
• 2 small wheel discs;
• 3 plastic bowls or basins;
• Garden hose;
• Cement;
• Spray paint - green and white;
• Red and blue acrylic paint;
• Two old buckets;
Tools:
• Drill;
• Utility knife;
• Scissors;
• Drawing pencils;
• Paint brushes;
• 2x6x8 piece of treated wood;
• Screws;
• Long galvanized nails;
• Hammer;
Instructions and sequence of work:
1. Clean the tires from dirt and road soot and leave to dry for a while;
2. For large tires, select the side that will be the bottom of the flower bed. Make 4-6 drainage holes in the bottom with a drill so that excess water drains into the ground.
3. Trim the top of the large tire to make a hole for a basin or plastic bowl where you will plant the flowers. In the bowl, also drill holes for drainage with a drill.
4. Do the same with two more tires, which will be the base for the top tire - the head of the frog.
5. Paint all tires green. Also paint over two car disks that will imitate the frog's eyes with green paint, and white in the middle. With blue paint, paint over the pupils-circles inside the white circles.
6. For the eyelashes, take a wedge-shaped piece of tire and cut a stripe segment to fit one-third of the white circle on the tire. Cut a strip of a black tire, without reaching the end, strips-eyelashes.
7. Before installing the frog figure, connect the two rails at the place in the garden where the frog will stand. Then fill the tires with earth. And put the top tire on top in the middle of the two tires as shown in the picture. And also cover with earth. You can connect the tires together with cement mortar.
8. Install two car frog eyes onto the top tire. And then plant flower beds with flowers. And do not forget to paint sponges on the top tire with red paint.
9. It remains to make the hands and paws of the frog. To do this, use two hoses of 0.5-0.7 m each and cut out palms with 4 fingers according to the pattern with a knife. Fantasize. Connect everything with glue, cement or even tape (which is at hand) and paint over with green paint. And paws can be nailed to the ground with galvanized nails.
10. If the frog is a princess (!), then you need to cut out a crown from the tire, paint over it with yellow paint and place it between the eyes on a piece of wood previously hammered in this place for stability.
